Zinc oxide based electronic ceramics are being used increasingly to protect electric and electronic circuits against transient voltage surges. Varistors are produced by sintering and annealing ZnO based powder compacts through long sintering and annealing cycles. Because of the length of these cycles, a manufacturing plant is saddled with expensive high temperature equipment with low throughput. Ceramics Kingston Inc. has developed a new technology that uses 2.45 GHz microwave energy for sintering and annealing. The new technology has the potential for increasing equipment and labour productivity very considerably. Additionally, the new technology will result in appreciable energy savings and add flexibility to the manufacturing process. Microstructural examination of varistors sintered conventionally and by microwave technology showed considerably smaller grain size in the microwave sintered materials. The electrical properties of the microwave sintered ceramics compare very favorably with those of the ones sintered conventionally.

Ore at the Magmont Mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room and pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, an innovative plan was formulated for recovery of high grade ore in pillars using cable bolts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft). A test area was subsequently selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study effort by COMINCO METALS, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was later established. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 1,000,000 tons per year. Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased to 630,000 tons per year in November 1992. Pillar recovery now accounts for approximately 40%-50% of the mined tonnage and plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

In the Frick District of U, So Steel Corporation, we have had more than 37 years of experience in the use of multiple-fan ventilation systems, in our coal mines. In our Colonial field, with a long belt installation, we have mined 85 million tons of coal with the use of the multiple fan system of ventilation. In our Palmer field, with the use of the same arrangement, we have mined 90 million tons of coal--a total of 175 million tons without one accident attributable to improper mine ventilation. The same system, fundamentally, has been installed in our expanding Robena operations and at its present stage of development we are using eight fans to ventilate this area. To date we have mined 55 million tons of coal with very encouraging results and again without any accidents attributable to ventilation.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes thermal drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of commercial dewatering devices were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus? during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for size degradation in the devices and fines loss to effluents, where appropriate, and a calculation for moisture content of the product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for coarse and fine coal centrifuges and gives comparisons between predicted moisture and solids loss and published moisture and solids loss values for various particle size ranges.

Surface mine planning and watershed management requires the manipulation of a massive volume of data. The processes of collecting, examining, selecting, and generalizing information for the production of maps and sediment structure designs are a major part of mine planning and evaluation. Computer aided design graphics systems are becoming increasingly more important to the surface mining industry. This paper illustrates the applications of a digitizer and plotter interfaced to an IBM PC-XT microcomputer, which form the hardware elements in the new University of Kentucky hydrology, sedimentology, and structure design package called SEDCAD.

Experiment shows that the microbial degradation of pyrite does not necessarily proceed stoichiometrically. Under some conditions sulfur is oxidized preferentially leaving something approaching iron in composition; under others, the pyrite is converted almost to elemental sulfur. A kinetic model for the process based on three elementary biochemical reactions can explain these observations. The diffusion of sulfur along grain boundaries and dislocations in the solid pyrite uncouples the oxidation rates of sulfur and iron from the requirements of stoichiometry. This mechanism also explains qualitatively why bacteria adsorb preferentially at dislocation sites on pyrite surfaces, why they form "pits" at these sites, and why amorphous pyrite is more readily degraded than pure crystals. What is your assessment of the mining industry as we near the end of the 20th century? As it always has, the industry is continually changing. The recent rate of change has been hectic. Many mining-related commodities are selling at low prices. These include gold, silver, copper, coal and soda ash, to name a few. Lower prices place pres- sure on mining companies to increase efficiency through productivity, down- sizing or mergers. The short- term effect of this situation may adversely affect the individual SME member. But the long- term benefit is to build a stronger, more productive and internationally competitive mining industry. In addition, most of these metals and minerals have been historically cyclical in nature, and prices will rebound.

INTRODUCTION Davy McKee have developed and patented a combined mixer settler (CMS) which has undergone extensive trials and has now been installed in two commercial uranium plants in South Africa. Substantial capital and operating cost savings can be realized over conventional mixer settler in uranium extraction, especially from dilute feedstocks containing approximately 200 ppm U308. Pilot plant work has also been undertaken on other metal extraction systems and the results are very encouraging in most areas of interest. CONVENTIONAL MIXER SETTLERS The conventional plant in use at many uranium recovery facilities consists typically of a mixer box in which the aqueous and organic phases are contacted and a settler in which the two phases separate. The mixer box must allow sufficient residence time for the mass transfer kinetics to be satisfied for the particular species involved. The settlers are usually rectangular and take the form of shallow tanks of large cross sectional area.

Mine fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of products of combustion (POC). Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines to perform this simulation. The most recent and advanced program, MFIRE performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. A major concern of mine fires is the heat- generated ventilation disturbances which can move POC through unexpected passageways. This Bureau paper describes recent in-mine experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM to validate the temperature distribution and heat exchange with rock functions of MFIRE.

Mining geometrical graphic documentation is employed on a large scale in designing and planning of mining operations at all the stages of exploitation. Mining geometrical modelling of mineral grade distribution presents an independent type of mathematical (graphic) modelling. The idea of functional relationship between geological indices being observed, and spicier coordinates is the basis of traditional mining geometrical modelling. Graphic presentation of three independent variables P =f (x,y,z) is confined to obtaining the series of two independent variables functions. Independent variables are presented as topographic surfaces corresponding to plane cross-sections of a deposit. During exploitation of certain parts of a deposit the most reliable geological information is obtained, characterizing regularities of ore distribution in the entrails. This information is, though, not taken into account in goemetrization of the new areas. In this connection dynamic modelling of deposits in the process of exploitation is necessary, i.e. geometrization of the deposits should be dynamic.

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). In the last five years Eldorado Resources Ltd. (ERL) has undergone a major expansion and modernization of its uranium refining and conversion plants. A new refinery for processing yellow cake to UO3 was constructed at Blind River in northern Ontario and started up in 1985. Its rated capacity is 18,000 t/a uranium as UO3. At Port Hope, Ontario, ERL's new UF6 conversion plant has been constructed. This plant started up in 1984. It utilizes the novel, wet-way process to produce UF4 and gives the company a UF6 production capacity of 14,500 t/a U. Also at Port Hope is Eldorado's ceramic UO2 powder production facility, commissioned in late 1980. It has a capacity of 1700 t/a uranium as UO8. With the completion of these capital projects, Eldorado has the largest and most up-to-date refining and conversion facilities in the western world. This paper reviews the refining process and process design. The methodology used to start up the Blind River plant is described as are some startup difficulties, solutions that were developed, and the resultant current operation.

A 4200 ton-per- hour marine transfer terminal, where river and oceangoing vessels simultaneously exchange cargos of coal and phosphate rock, is now in operation near the mouth of the Mississippi. Its materials handling machinery includes a bucket ladder barge unloader; a rope operated clamshell bucket unloader; a coal loader; and a rail mounted bucket wheel machine. The design and operation of this equipment is described as are the docks and conveying, breasting and barge-haul systems in use at the facility. Design considerations imposed by soil and river conditions, geography, operating needs and investment requirements are discussed. The economic significance of design and shipping innovations introduced by this facility is noted.

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in theGuiana Shield of northcentral Suriname in South America. The property lies 80 km (50 miles) south of the capital city of Paramaribo. Gross Rosebel covers 170 km2 (65 sq miles) in an area of small hills covered primarily with secondary tropical rain forest, separated by discontinuous savannah (Fig. 1). The concession is accessible from Paramaribo by a 120-km (75-mile) paved and all-weather gravel road. Surficial gold was discovered in 1880 by local artisanal miners. This was followed by small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. Placer Development carried out the first systematic exploration program from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992, Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling, based on information from surface mapping, allowed the development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. Reserves based on $11.25/g ($350/oz) gold now stand at 35.5 Mt (39.1 million st) of 1.8 g/t (0.053 oz/st) gold, or 62.2 t (2 million oz) of gold.

Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation group is a world leader in mineral processing consulting. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies, which include investigating the effects of drill-and-blast design and implementation on downstream processing. Critical to these studies is the ability to track specific ore into, and through, the plant. To increase the accuracy of this ore tracking, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) developed a system to track ore using a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and, finally, into the concentrator. The system is called SmartTag. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects, and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide.

The froth flotation of coal, differing greatly from that of most minerals1-5, is not improved but rather impaired by temperatures higher than room temperature6-10 This phenomenon has long taunted us for an explanation. Gayle and Associates 8,9 reported the lack of relationship between their contact angle measurements and their flotation of American coals under various temperatures. Bailey and Whelan6 stated that the viscosity of flotation reagents, offering some clue for their flotation of British coals at low temperatures, could not be put forward as an explanation either in whole or in part for the effect of temperatures on coal-flotation. In this paper, a froth hypothesis is proposed to explain the flotation behavior of coals under various pulp temperatures. Test work involved the flotation of coals and the frothing of reagents.

Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (US, Canada), better geological prospectivity (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock-market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This paper does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly which is multi-national in character nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free-trade treaty will reverse that investment flow.

This paper provides a new approach to determine the opening layout in underground mining methods by means of genetic programming. Based on a set of random combination of openings, the layout of openings will gradually improve with the help of genetic operations, including reproduction, crossover, mutation and fitness calculation. The optimal solution will finally emerge according to Darwinian principle: "the survival of the fittest ".
