Thirteen kinetic models that mathematically describe the flotation process have been statistically evaluated for the flotation of copper, lead and zinc ores. Comparisons have been made for a variety of circuits involving roughing, cleaning, scavenging and regrind followed by cleaning. Variations in collectors, frothers, depressants and activators have been considered. Based on the statistical criteria used for the evaluation, and the reagent, circuit and ore variations studied, the most reliable flotation models have been identified and subsequently used to characterize the metallurgical results.

This paper describes the field application of the NTH fracture classification to rock encountered in the construction of the 9.6 km long, 10m diameter, Second Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel. Excavation of the tunnel was undertaken by TBM between 1997 and 2002, in gneisses, granitic and diorite rocks. The paper outlines an adaptation of the NTH fracture classification used during the geological logging of this tunnel. The NTH fracture classification was primarily applied to assess discontinuity spacing for tunnel support requirement decision-making. The paper includes some general comparison of NTH classes with overall penetration rate.

A large percentage of Southern Appalachian coal reserves are located in seams less than 36" thick. As thicker and currently more mineable deposits are exhausted, methods of underground thin-seam extraction must be developed. Past experience with highwall mining of thin-seam coal has indicated that recovery rates tend to be lower than in conventional operations. It is suspected that this will also apply to underground thin-seam mining, regardless of proposed technology or mining method. Backfilling is one alternative for thin-seam coal mining; although backfill has been used extensively in hard rock mining its use in coal mining has been limited. The ability of backfill to provide additional ground support may enhance coal recovery by allowing for the design of undersized pillars. Backfill is capable of providing additional ground support by restricting lateral deformation of surrounding coal pillars and roof. This additional support can result in significant increases in recovery from thin-seam coal deposits. However, the overall feasibility of backfill is dependent on the in situ behavior of the fill material, the properties of the fill, the effects of the filling method on the total mining operation, and the cost of filling per extra ton of coal recovered.

Environmental awareness has become a paramount consideration in the issue of planning and licensing arrangements for the disposal of wastes associated with mining operations. In this con- text the disposal of liquid tailings is a difficult and controversial problem with regard to environmental surface disposal. The paper outlines the use of Information Systems for decision support in the safe and environmental disposal of liquid tailings linked to conventional coarse refuse operations. This offers both an economic and an aesthetic approach to a historical perception of waste tipping in the underground coal extraction industry. The paper will demonstrate a prototype system that incorporates multimedia facilities which include data such as; voice comments, site photography, site plans and fluid flow circuits.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. "A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

Part 1: Physical Characteristics The physical and mineralogical characteristics of samples from five sources in the Western United States were determined using size analyses, microscopic studies, and point counts. These results were combined with leachability assays and the chemistry of leachates obtained during slurry tests to predict sample dissolution characteristics during column leaching tests. Part 2: Dissolution Characteristics Two columns of each sample were leached over a period of 3 years with synthetic rain. Residence times were between 2 and 11 weeks. The samples were subjected to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations and wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. During the latter part of this study, a biocide leachant (sodium benzoate) was substituted for synthetic rain to assess the degree of dissolution caused by biological oxidation. It was found that the presence or absence of barite or carbonate minerals can be used to predict the leaching behavior of the column material.

The U. S. Department of Energy (D.O.E.) requires that the prospective nuclear waste repository in Basalt at Hanford, Washington, comply with State of California mine and tunnel safety orders. These regulations require that all main fans be installed in such a manner as to permit prompt reversal of airflow. This paper evaluates the requirement of air reversal and the appropriateness of imposing such regulations on the proposed nuclear waste repository in Basalt.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

A summary of field equations governing the hygro-thermo-mechanical (coupled temperature, moisture, and stress) response of geological media is presented. The applicability of these equations, with appropriate boundary conditions, to the study of basic mechanisms associated with underground coal gasification (UCG) process is discussed. In particular, the phenomenon of stress-induced spalling resulting from intense drying near the gasified cavity and in situ effects is investigated by means of the finite element method. Some typical results from sample finite element model representations are presented for the evaluation of field experiments.

The characteristics of gold leaching from carbonaceous matter by sodium cyanide, and sorption of gold cyanide to carbonaceous matter in autoclaved and non-autoclaved gold ore from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was investigated. Much greater gold cyanide complex sorption was observed for the carbonaceous matter in high preg-robbing ores relative to the low preg-robbing ores. This observation corroborates previous reports that have attributed observed preg-robbing behavior to the carbon in the ore. Gold cyanide complex sorption was found to be reversible for carbonaceous matter from low preg-robbing ore, but was irreversible for carbonaceous matter from high preg-robbing ores. Autoclaving the ore appeared to enhance the sorptive behavior of the carbonaceous matter from both high and low preg-robbing ores.

This paper reviews uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance, the nature of the heterogeneous reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. Recent studies on sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps, monitoring its concentration, and the optimum dosage control using platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes are discussed.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, located in Shanghang County, China, is a porphyry-type, low-grade ore deposit with a geological profile of upper gold and lower copper. Despite its low-grade nature, it has become one of the largest in production scale and most profitable nonferrous metal mines in China, which can be attributed to the successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design. A large-scale, open-air cyanide heap leach has been successfully implemented to recover gold under the humid and rainy weather conditions of southern China. Furthermore, according to the gold ore characteristics, a combination of gravity separation, carbon-in-leach and heap leaching processes was developed to improve gold recovery. In terms of copper extraction, copper ore of a grade higher than 0.25 percent is fed to the flotation plants to produce copper concentrate (gold is also enriched here), while copper ore of a grade lower than 0.25 percent undergoes heap bioleaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce cathode copper. Additionally, a unique bioleaching system has been established at the Zijinshan Mine: low operating pH (0.8~1.0), high concentration of total soluble iron (~50 g/L), high temperatures (45~60 °C) and low activity of microorganism (~104/mL) in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). This review paper summarizes the practical experience acquired in developing the Zijinshan gold-copper mine and could be of use in other gold and/or copper plants.

Significant quantities of nuclear wastes were first generated in 1944 as a byproduct of the national defense program. To establish the current inventories and future projections of nuclear waste products is not a simple task. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently issued a report which now constitutes the official basis for nuclear waste inventories and projections. Radioactive wastes originate from five major sources (U .S. Department of Energy, 1980b) : (1) From the commercial nuclear fuel cycle related to the production of electricity , (2) From defense related activities, (3) From institutions such as hospitals, universities, and research foundations, (4) From industrial uses of radioisotopes, and (5) From mining and milling of uranium ores.

Incorporation of heat exchangers into drilled shaft foundations is a novel approach to both improve the energy efficiency of building heat pump systems and provide necessary structural support using the same construction materials. In an effort to quantify the structural and heat exchange performance of deep foundations used as ground-source heat pumps, two instrumented test foundations were constructed as part of a new construction project in Denver, CO. They will be integrated into the conventional ground-source heat pump system for the building. This paper focuses on the lessons learned from the construction process for these energy foundations.

"History - How did you get into mining and involved with SME?Unlike many past presidents, I do not come from a mining lineage. I liked math in high school and believed I wanted to be an engineer. I told my math teacher that, and he laughed in my face. I believe that humiliation is what carried me through engineering school. At the time my ability to go to college relied on how inexpensive I could make it. My brother told me that there were a lot of scholarships in mining engineering, and I should apply to mining schools. As usual, he was right and I was off to the University of Idaho to study. My first summer break I got a job with Hecla at a mine in Arizona. I was a laborer on a shotcrete crew. I knew after the first summer that I loved underground mining, and I never considered changing disciplines. Looking back, I was working in miserable conditions (hot, humid), on a miserable job (shotcrete), where I got injured, and two summer student roommates died in a car accident on the commute home after work. I had every reason to hate the industry, as I had seen virtually everything bad about what we do. But I didn’t, I loved it. I said I was good at math, I never said I was smart.I joined SME in college because I was told to by the head of the mining school, Dr. Jack Hoskins. You did what Jack told you to do. I got involved because I went to an annual meeting and the papers in the underground sessions were terrible. I refer to bad papers as the “Tensile strength on cable bolts in sub-arctic regions on Tuesday” papers. Real snoring fodder. I don’t remember who I was complaining to, but they told me to quit my grumbling and fix it. So I chaired a session, and tried to get only good quality papers, something that has been my mantra for years with the Mining & Exploration Division. I also volunteered to help the local sections too. Then one day I woke up as president.What is your opinion of the health of the mining industry?The mining industry is in bad shape. Coal is under attack and will likely never recover to its former greatness. Our President has banned new coal leases, and the state of California is forcing people it does business with to divest their interests in coal companies. And that all happened in just in a few short weeks this January. Usually in America you get a trial before you are given a death sentence, but not with coal."

The Gosowong epithermal quartz-adularia vein, in the Halmahera magmatic arc, is a new discovery in an area of primary tropical rain forest with no history of gold mining or mineralization. The newly recognized mineral district also contains a number of other epithermal vein systems, two centres of porphyry Cu-Au mineralization, and a number of argillic and advanced argillic alteration zones that may be related to underlying mineralization. Gosowong was discovered and tested through the application of basic exploration techniques including drainage sampling, soil sampling, trenching, magnetics, IP, and diamond drilling. Lapse time from the initial reconnaissance discovery of a stream sediment anomaly to the release of inferred resource estimates of approximately 1.0m ounces was just over 3 years.

Doyon mine, Quebec, Canada evaluates the possibility of desulphurizing their tailings to produce material to be used in as cover over the acid generating tailings disposal site. Laboratory tests were conducted and showed that a single-layer cover made of desulphurized tailings placed over reactive tailings can prevent the generation of acid mine drainage. Modelling with the software Vadose/W was undertaken to optimize the design parameters, namely cover thickness, water table position, and residual sulphide content of desulphurized tailings following laboratory work. It was found that the optimal configuration includes a 1 m desulphurized tailings cover containing 0.8%S, with the water table kept at the interface between the reactive tailings and the cover. To maintain the cover performance to reduce oxygen flux towards acid-generating tailings even in the event of a long dry period, a sand layer is suggested to protect the cover from excessive evaporation. It is possible to reach the environmental objective chosen for Doyon mine (10 mol/m2/year) with the protective sand layer, even in extremely dry conditions.
