A digital computer program has been developed to mathematically simulate the effect of limited changes in feed rate on the grinding circuit of an operating mill. The data on which the program is based was supplied by the staff of the mill in question. Samples taken around the complete grinding circuit were analyzed for solids content and particle size distribution for two feed rates. Matrix models were used to represent the grinding units: rod mill and pebble mills. Parameters for these models were computed using a method developed by Mular(l). Classifier parameters were computed by the Powell search method(2) for the Plitt model (3) . The simulation program, which permits the computing of the size distributions in the circuit resulting from the changes in feed rate between the two measured values, assumes that a linear relationship exists between the corresponding parameter coefficients. The program uses an iteration method to bring the simulated grinding circuit to a steady-state material balance for any specified' feed rate between those measured. The program is, in addition, extremely fast and economic in computing time. The results show that the simulations are not everywhere consistent with practice. For example, higher feed rates on simulation predict finer products. These errors are shown to be attributable to anomalies in data gathering techniques. To mining people who have experienced the tremendous expansion of existing operations and the development of new properties over the last several years we do not have to point out the difficulties in hiring skilled equipment operators. To those of you who have opened operations in some of the more remote places in the world this is not just a difficulty. It is an impossibility. Your only recourse has been to try and train whatever manpower has been available. Depending upon your success in training, the next problem has been to keep them. On todays modern equipment, the skill of the operator remains as the greatest single variable affecting the performance of the machine. On a blast hole drill, for example, a skilled operator will get good production footage, acceptable bit life and minimal machine downtime The unskilled operator will not only fail to get the acceptable production footage but all too frequently this failure is coupled with low bit life, high repair costs and excessive machine downtime. Even between experienced operators, on identical machines, in the same kind of material we find significant variations in performance. It is, therefore, the skill of the operator, not just his experience, which makes the difference. The problem, as presented to us by our customers, has been to find a way for the unskilled man, with minimal training, to match the performance of the most skilled and experienced operator. The obvious answer is automation.

The flotation of diaspore, kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite and the diaspore-kaolinite mixture were studied with a new cationic organosilicon quaternary ammonium collector entitled QAS222. The acting mechanism of the collector with the four minerals was analyzed by Zeta potential measurement and FT-IR spectrum analysis. The results indicate that the QAS222 was effective in the reverse flotation of the diaspore-bauxite mixture of different Al2O3 -to-SiO2 mass ratios (A/S ratio) at an optimum pulp pH of 11. The potentials of the four minerals increased when they were conditioned in the QAS222 solution; however, the potentials of the three aluminosilicate minerals increased faster than that of the diaspore, especially at pH>9. Furthermore, they were positive in a wide pH range, indicating that QAS222 has a strong adsorption on the surface of the aluminosilicate minerals and thus that these minerals can be floated. The FT-IR spectra analysis further indicates that, besides electrostatic adsorp-tions, formation of the hydrogen bond and ammonium absorptions, chemical adsorptions occur between QAS222 and the aluminosilicate minerals, which allow for the QAS222 to be strongly adsorbed on the aluminosilicate minerals. However, these reactions between QAS222 and diaspore at pulp pH=11 are weaker than those of the aluminosilicate minerals. Thus, surface adsorptions cannot be formed effectively, resulting in reduced floatability.

Microseismic passive velocity tomography is becoming an effective technology for large-scale mining-induced stress monitoring in underground mines, especially in the field of early warning of mining-induced hazards. Aiming at the problems of missing low-magnitude events in traditional microseismic monitoring, as well as the potential to increase the resolution of the tomograms in both time and space, a microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis method based on the template matching method was proposed. First, the template matching method was used to pick microseismic events. Then, the probabilistic, non-linear, global-search earthquake location method was used to locate the events and calculate travel time and travel distance. Finally, the fast-marching method was used to carry out passive velocity tomography analysis to image the movement of the abutment stress associated with the longwall. The results show that the selected templates can identify more microseismic events than the traditional microseismic analysis, and the variation trend of events in each day is consistent with the data from the traditional analysis. Using microseismic event locations, travel times and travel distance can effectively complete microseismic passive velocity tomography analysis in each day during the study period and can effectively identify the forward and side abutment stress zones of that longwall panel. This study provides a reference for the identification of mine-induced high stress zones, which has implications for hazard identification and mitigation, with increased resolution of the tomograms in time and space.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. A method of raising by use of a cage has been used with considerable success at the Cary Mine, Hurley, Wisconsin, on the Gogebic Range. The Cary Mine is owned by the Odanah Iron Company, Pickands, Mather and Company, Managers. This method is known to have been used previously at Tennessee Copper and probably in other districts. The Cary Mine was engaged in deepening the main shaft from the 34th to the 37th level. To accomplish this, and to facilitate development, a ventilation shaft 930 feet north of the main shaft was sunk from the 34th to the 37th level and crosscuts were driven on the 35th, 36th and 37th levels to the main shaft location, These levels are at 200 foot verticalintervals. All of this work was done in granite and the majority of the workings were not timbered. The next step was to get a raise through from the 37th to the 36th level, and from the 36th to the 35th level, which would later be stripped to full shaft size. Several methods of raising were considered including double-compartment cribbed and two single raises interconnected at regular intervals, but the cage method was chosen as it appeared to be a safe and efficient operation. The method in general consists in the use of a drill hole between levels through which to pass a hoisting rope to raise and lower a light cage.

"Tunnels are built with a design life expectancy of over 100 years. One key component of such a design is the waterproofing system, which must reliably fulfil its function during the whole service lifetime of the tunnel structure. This paper deals with the determination of test criteria for the durability assessment of geosynthetic products in tunnel sealing systems. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa. To verify the results of the new test procedure the material properties of geosynthetic products samples removed from older tunnels are investigated. Based on the presented results of the still ongoing research programs some preliminary conclusion regarding the updating of regulations for tunnel sealing systems are given. INTRODUCTION Watertightness is directly related to the durability and serviceability of the concrete lining. Therefore, modern traffic tunnels and shafts (Figure 1) are generally protected against mountain/ground water and water penetrating through rock fissures by a sealing system, for example with a loose-laid polymeric sheet membrane. Hereby the waterproofing sealing systems must be reliably fulfilling their function during the whole service life of the tunnel structure, regularly of more than 100 years. In consequence, the quality and lifetime performance of the waterproofing materials—beside the correct professional and careful installation in a tunnel infrastructure, is of great importance. The challenge for the industry, owners, operators and designers is ultimately the development of qualification testing and requirements (acceptance criteria) for products to ensure the design lifetime performance. Hereby the qualification procedure is seen as a routine integrated in standards, norms or guidelines, wherein test procedures should cover typical environments for the specific application fields. Polymeric synthetic raw materials are increasingly used in products with long service lifetimes (e.g. in injections, gaskets, waterbars, spray-applied and sheet waterproofing membranes). During service they are subjected to chemical (e.g. oxidation processes) and physical (e.g. changes in morphology) influences from the environment, which affect their mechanical properties—and they age. Hereby organic materials are more affected than inorganic materials. Also, polymers show strongly temperature-dependent properties compared with other construction materials. However, their long-term aging behavior is not given per se and has to be explored extensively by suitable tests, which simulate—under accelerated processes—real exposures and loads. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa."

"Over 600 longwall panels have been mined in Pennsylvania in the last 50 years. Of those 600 panels, 25 panels undermined interstate highways. Despite this quantity of panels, much is still unknown regarding the detailed effects of undermining highways. The Gateway Mine, the Emerald Mine, and the Cumberland Mine undermined I-79 with 17 panels between 1982–1989 and 2003–2008, respectively; mine Eighty-Four undermined I-70 with 4 panels between 1987–2000.Through the examination of the panels that undermined I-70 and I-79, it is possible to determine which factors have most impacted the highway alignments. In some locations, the highway intersects with panels at angles ranging from 45 to 80 degrees, and at others, it runs between two panels, which simulates the effect of gateroads on the subsidence. The panels width to overburden ratio varies between 0.64 and 1.7, meaning that the interstates were influenced by both subcritical and supercritical subsidence basins. The face advance rates and overburden depths also vary between the panels.Unfortunately, specific information detailing highway impacts associated with unique characteristics of the subsidence basins are limited. However, using the profile function model and influence function model within the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS), the effects of overburden, panel size, and orientation of the road to highway can be indirectly assessed by profile and influence models of subsidence basin formation.INTRODUCTIONCoal mining has been an integral part of Pennsylvania’s history. Room-and-pillar mines have been active since the late-1700s when coal was extracted from outcrops. By 1830, the city of Pittsburgh alone consumed more than 400 tons of bituminous coal each day for domestic and industrial use (PADEP, 2019). In the late 1960s, the face of mining in Pennsylvania changed with the development of full extraction longwall mines. Since that development, over 600 longwall panels have been mined in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Pennsylvania alone (PADEP, 2019).As longwall mining and other forms of full extraction mining have increased in popularity, the amount of planned subsidence impacting the surface has also increased. The stresses and strains induced by longwall subsidence can cause damage to the surface as well any structures, water supplies, or water bodies that lie above the panel. Since the behavior of soils and structures vary, one way to study the surface effects of longwall mining is to analyze the impact on flat, rigid, pavement surfaces. Examining factors that vary the impact of subsidence with respect to highway alignment can demonstrate the favorable orientation of an alignment to avoid or mitigate damage and critical impact zones in a subsidence basin."

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. "Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. In some cities, which already levy their own sales tax, the rate would be higher, The Los Angeles Times reported.About 35 percent of the revenue will fund major new transit projects, such as the subway under the Sepulveda Pass, extension of the Gold Line to Claremont, extension of the Crenshaw Line to West Hollywood and acceleration of the Purple Line Subway construction along Wilshire Boulevard to finish in 2024, 10 years earlier than scheduled.About 17 percent would fund a dozen highway improvement projects, such as widening parts of I-5 in the Antelope Valley and southeastern county, adding bus lanes to the Sepulveda Pass section of the 405 freeway and adding truck-only lanes to a section of the 710 freeway."

It is a pleasure to appear on this program and discuss a subject which is of particular interest to me. In my regular duties as Safety Director of Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, I am called on by member companies to discuss matters affecting face ventilation. As a member of the Joint Industry Safety Committee, as I will later describe, I have a part in processing requests for the use of auxiliary fans for face ventilation. The use of auxiliary fans in bituminous coal mines for this purpose came into rather wide use in the late. '20's when conveyor mining was introduced. In this application, the equipment consisted of a chain conveyor with a face chain conveyor parallel to the face on which the coal was loaded by hand and, in turn, was discharged onto the room conveyor and thence to a loading point on the entry at the mouth of the room. Another method was to use a shaker conveyor with a duckbill which was maneuvered across the face of the room from which the coal was loaded and transported by the shaker to the loading point. In either case the equipment did not readily lend itself to driving crosscuts or breakthroughs with the result that rooms were driven to depths of 250 or 300 feet without adequate means of ventilating the face area with the main split of air. It was, therefore, necessary to use other means of ventilating this area as the rooms were being driven and during retreat work if pillars were extracted. Auxiliary fans of the blowing type were utilized for this purpose. They were of very small capacity using small diameter tubing. By the time the room was driven half way to its projected limit ventilation was very poor or practically nonexistent. To compound the problem the fan was usually set up at the mouth or neck of the room and in many cases the intake air to the fan was the return air from the room. It is small wonder, therefore, that there is on record 12 cases where auxiliary fans were given as the cause of explosions. In 9 of these occurrences, arcs or sparks from open-type motors or accessory equipment on these fans were given as the primary ignition source. They fell into such ill repute that in a number of cases they were blamed as the ignition source even though smoking was strongly suspected as the primary cause.

One of the many responsibilities of mining engineers and mill superintendents is to provide for the safe and economic disposal of wastes (or tailings) remaining after a mineral has been extracted from an ore. The cost of disposal of these tailings exerts a considerable influence on the minimum grade of ore extracted from the mine. It varies to a great extent with each project and is dependent on many diverse factors, such as the local topographical, meteorolgical, geological and seismological conditions together with the applicable water pollution laws of the area. The process used to extract a mineral from an ore determines the physical characteristics of the tailings and thus is one of the more important factors to be considered when planning disposal facilities. Today's trends .in ore-processing operations complicate the problems of waste disposal: recently developed extraction methods result in the production of finer tailings, the use of lower grade ores produces greater volumes of wastes, while the enhanced land values in the vicinity of industrial plants preclude the former practice of spreading wastes laterally and force the expansion of waste desposits upwards to greater heights. The frequent occurrence of stability problems in waste deposits indicates that many mining organizations may not be employing current soil mechanics concepts and practices. One of the most spectacular, and often most disastrous, types of tailings dike failure is that resulting from liquefaction of the fine particles combined with a breach of the main retaining dike.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME's March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry's premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators' symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year's SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW's award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. Introduction In April 1998, AIS Sommer GmbH of Germany delivered the first laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) analyzer to the mining industry. LKAB's Kiruna iron ore mine in Sweden shared the costs and the risk of building the prototype. This marks the beginning of LIF analysis as a technique for quality control in mining and mineral processing. Photoluminescence analysis is well established. In most laboratories, fluorescence spectrometers are standard equipment for quality or pollution control. LIF is being used in several applications, including combustion studies and particle image velocimetry. However, it has mostly been used in laboratory environments. The availability of rugged lasers for industrial use brings this powerful tool to the forefront of production, even in the rough conditions found in mining and minerals processing. Laser-induced fluorescence Basics. Fluorescence of naturally occurring minerals has fascinated man since scientific investigation of this phenomenon commenced about 200 years ago. However, importance in industrial application and peripheral activities. Hand sorting of ore under ultraviolet (UV) lamps is seen as an archaic method. Long gone are the days when geologists set out at night with UV hand lamps to find valuable ore deposits, especially those of tungsten. Today, fluorescent minerals are considered collectors' items and museum exhibits. In the late 1960s (Hemphill, 1968) and during the 1970s, attempts to use lasers for excitation of fluorescence in minerals led to the development of an airborne fluorosensor (Seigel and Robbins, 1980). However, this prospecting technology did not gain industry acceptance and vanished from the market. During the past seven years, ongoing research of the LIF of minerals resulted in new findings that give good reason to revive the interest in fluorescence and its use in the mineral industries (Broicher and Zydek, 1995; Broicher, 1998). Fluorescence is defined as the short-lived form of photoluminescence, in which matter emits visible radiation during and after irradiation with light – the fluorescence generally being of a longer wavelength than the irradiation. Fluorescence of matter is described by: • the absorption spectrum, • the emission spectrum, • the decay curve and • the quantum efficiency. The absorption spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity in a fixed spectral band as a function of the excitation wavelength, while the emission spectrum shows the fluorescence intensity at varying emission wave- lengths for a fixed excitation wavelength (Fig. 1). The decay curves describe the exponential decrease of the fluorescence intensity with time. The quantum efficiency is the ratio of irradiating energy to emitted energy. Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

This paper presents the findings of a face ventilation investigation, conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, at a underground coal mine operating in the Illinois No. 5 coal seam. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining with brattice distances up to a maximum of 40 feet from the face (extended cut). The continuous miner on this section was remotely controlled and equipped with a machine mounted dust collector. Data collected during this investigation included methane concentrations, intake and return air quantities in the face area, and scrubber air quantities. In addition, a time study was conducted to correlate the methane peaks to activities in the face area. In conjunction with the face study on Section A, separate methane liberation studies were conducted on three additional sections: B, C, and D. This was done in order to compare intake methane concentrations and methane liberations from other sections in the mine to the test section. Calculations indicated that the minimum intake air quantity necessary at the inby end of the line brattice for the section investigated was 7,000 cfm. Due to the higher intake methane concentrations and average methane face liberations measured on three other sections, the minimum air quantities necessary at the inby end of the line brattice were determined to be 13,900 cfm, 11,100 cfm, and 15,000 cfm, respectively.
