With the ever increasing demand for Finer powders by industry there has been a continuing effort by air classifier manufacturers to improve and offer machinery capable of producing these fine powders. Common to these classifiers is the use of a multivaned rotor through which passes all of the air used to transport the particles to be classified. Rotor revolutions per minute and the amount of air passing through the rotor are the main variables in determining the particle sizes which will be able to pass through the spinning rotor. A simplified equation derived by setting the air drag force carrying a particle through the rotor equal to the centrifugal force due to the spinning rotor's action on the entering air and particle is: Diameter of Particle = [ ] Where K is a function of air viscosity, particle configuration, rotor and blade configuration; RPM is rotor revolutions per minute; M3/sec. is air quantity passing through the openings between the rotor blades.

The risk assessment project examines the likelihood of inorganic contaminants from copper dump-leaching operations to contaminate domestic water supplies. The project examines contaminant transport by modeling contaminant movement from the base of a leach pile through the unsaturated zone and into the saturated zone. The modeling effort is unique in that it models infiltration, contaminant transport in the unsaturated and saturated zone combined with geochemical modeling of the unsaturated zone. The project incorporates probability theory to reflect the uncertainty of hydrogeologic parameters.

An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

This paper highlights the mineralogy of the Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. area. The mine is located at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur and is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend. The Betze, Post, and Meikle Mine are major deposits located in the area. The deportment of gold, its leachability, and various process options are also evaluated. Particular emphasis is given to the practical and economic considerations of ore control, and routing of ore to a process option.

Introduction Preparing a report on fluorspar economics in the US could have been somewhat complicated at one time. This was because the number of producers, both large and small, derived production from different locations through-out the western US and the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar districts. Companies, such as Allied Chemical and Williamson Mining, operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, CO, the Colorado Fluorspar Co. operated mines and mills. In New Mexico, both Du Pont and Allied had mines and mills. In the Illinois-Kentucky district, US Steel, Rosiclare Lead and Fluorspar, Minerva Oil Co., and Marathon Oil all produced spar for the US market. Now all of the companies are out of the fluorspar business and, with the closing of the Seaforth Mineral Co.'s Inverness Mining Co., only Ozark-Mahoning Co. survives as a domestic producer. History Ozark-Mahoning Co., as it now exists, was formed in 1946 by the merger of Ozark Chemical Co. and Mahoning Mining Co. Ozark Chemical Co. was started in the 1920s to produce sulfuric acid for two refineries located in Tulsa, OK. Mahoning Mining was originally formed by the founders of Ozark Chemical Co. and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. to produce fluorspar and associated minerals from properties in the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1937, Mahoning Mining started an exploration program, employing contractor-operated churn drills to look for reserves in Hardin and Pope Counties in southern Illinois. Based on known reserves in the area and the results of the exploration program, work was started in the fall of 1938 to build a selective flotation plant at Rosiclare, IL. The mill was completed and put into operation in August of 1939. The company's first mining efforts were in the Cave-In-Rock district just north of Cave-In-Rock, IL. The deposits in this area were of the Manto or bedded type. They have been the mainstay of the company's operations in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1950-51, the company expanded its operations by purchasing fluorspar properties from Colorado Fluorspar Co. at Walden, CO. This location was operated from 1952 through 1958 and from 1968 through 1973 when it was closed permanently. In 1974, Ozark-Mahoning Co. was purchased by Pennwalt Corp. Presently, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of that corporation. As the only major domestic producer of fluorspar in the US today, the company's ability to survive under the flood of imported material is directly related to the four major segments of its operations. These are: exploration, mining productivity, maintenance, and marketing. All are done in-house. Exploration The Southern Illinois fluorspar district is located in the most complexly faulted area of the central US. The formations are sedimentary in nature and range in age from Devonian through Pennsylvanian. The deposits are small, they range in size from a few thousand tons up to 900 kt (1 million st), with the average minable deposit being around 544 kt (600,000 st). The ore occurs in both nearly vertical vein deposits and in Manto or flat lying bedded deposits. Due to the relatively small size of the deposits and the depth at which they occur, a good low-cost exploration program is essential to ensure that new finds of ore are equal to the mining extraction rate. Ozark maintains a leased land position in Pope and Hardin Counties that will fluctuate somewhere between a low of 40 km2 (10,000 acres) up to a high of 129 km2 (32,000 acres), depending on total size of tracts leased. Most all lands are obtained through a standard lease purchase option, with a small minimum royalty per acre during the normal 10-year option period. The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district's major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. INTRODUCTION Application Measurement of rock deformation is essential to stability and behavioral monitoring of underground openings. The difficulties of obtaining adequate sample distribution, density, and orientation can frequently be overcome by the use of single and multiple position borehole extensometers. In its simplest form, a borehole extensometer consists of an instrument head, usually anchored in the collar of a borehole, and a number of in-hole anchors, each of which is fixed in place at a known distance from the collar. As rock adjacent to the borehole deforms, the component parallel to the borehole direction causes a distance change between adjacent in-hole anchors, as well as a distance change between individual anchors and the instrument head. These changes are measured by means of a mechanical link (usually wire or rod) extending to the instrument head from each anchor. The resulting data can be used to compute the distribution, magnitude, rate, and acceleration of deformation in the material intersected by the extensometer's borehole. Wire Vs. Rod Extensometers Since the early 1960s myriad varieties of borehole extensometers have become available through the combination of various special features of two basic instruments, the wire and rod versions of borehole extensometers. Recent publications have recommended shallow depth limitations for wire extensometers, and favor rod extensometers for a broad range of borehole inclinations and depths. There are three main reasons for using a deep wire system: its cost effectiveness; the fact that tremendous depth means tremendous rod weight which will cause the rod to buckle or rub against the borehole or casing wall; and users' attitude and proper understanding of how to install and apply a wire-type extensometer. Here experience plays a big role. Over the years, many have learned the hard way that untensioned rod extensometers are simple and inherently inexpensive, but limited to vertical up holes where sensitivity is not influenced by friction between the rod elements and the borehole wall or protective conduit, the inertia of the rod elements, or the direction of the movement to be measured. In deep, horizontal, or inclined holes, and in instances where compressive as well as tensile strains or displacements are anticipated, tensioned rod or wire systems are preferred. System Components Borehole extensometers are made up of at least the following five principal components: the instrument head; the collar anchor assembly; the downhole system of anchors and rods or wires; the signal cable if the head is equipped for electronic readout; and the readout apparatus, whether mechanical or electronic. These components are shown in Fig. 1. Borehole Requirements Most extensometers are designed for installation in nominal 75 to 57-mm (3.0 to 2.25-in.) diam drill holes. Either a diamond drill or a percussion drill hole is satisfactory, provided the variation in drill-hole diameter is within the tolerance of the standard anchor design. The basic system may be modified for other hole diameters by changing the dimensions of the collar anchor and downhole anchor assemblies. Some instrument heads and collar anchor assemblies require enlarged borehole collars, though usually not over 150 mm (6 in.) for a depth of 1 m (3 ft). It is desirable, although not essential, that holes be free-draining. Holes must be clean and free of debris before installation. Depth/Orientation of Extensometer Boreholes Extensometers are designed to measure axial strain components in the instrumented drill hole. As the drill hole is axially deformed, the distances between individual downhole anchors and the instrument head change, as do the distances between adjacent anchors. The distance changes measured by a multiple position borehole extensometer, for example, are reduced to functions of time, hole depth, anchor position, or other parameters of significance in terms of the structure under investigation.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. INTRODUCTION The two basic types of mine-air compressors are the positive-displacement compressors and the dynamic compressors. Positive-displacement compressors con¬fine successive volumes of air within a closed space and increase the pressure by reducing the volume of that space. Reciprocating and rotary compressors operate on this principle. Dynamic compressors utilize an impeller to acceler¬ate the air, with the increased air velocity converted to pressure through a stationary diffuser. Centrifugal compressors and turbocompressors operate on this principle. Reciprocating Compressors Reciprocating compressors include both single-stage and multistage units. For mine service the most com¬mon is the two-stage intercooled compressor having an atmospheric pressure intake and a discharge pressure of 689 to 861 kPa (100 to 125 psi). The cylinders of a reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting. In the single-acting cylinder, compression occurs on only one side of the piston, while, in double¬acting cylinders, compression occurs on both sides of the piston. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a typical two-stage double-acting water-cooled reciprocat¬ing compressor. Fig. 2 illustrates the sequence of opera¬tions occurring in the cylinder of a reciprocating com¬pressor. Most modern mine compressors are double acting and are driven by electric motors. Induction motors are used on low-powered compressors, and synchronous motors are used on larger compressors. Steam-driven compressors once were common and still are applied where a reliable source of low-cost steam is available. For this type of compressor, steam is a desirable power source since a governor that senses the discharge pres¬sure can be used to control the steam inlet. This can be used to regulate the compressor speed to compress only air sufficient to meet the mine's requirements (up to the capacity of the unit). Unlike a constant-speed electric¬driven compressor, no other regulation is required for the cylinders of a steam-driven unit. Rotary Compressors Rotary compressors include sliding-vane, liquid¬piston, two-impeller straight-lobe or cycloidal, and helical-lobe units. Each of these has specific advantages and applications. Of these, the helical-lobe or "screw" compressor has the greatest application for supplying "100-lb air" [689 kPa (100 psi) ] to small- and medium¬size underground mines. Fig. 3 illustrates the operation of a sliding-vane compressor. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of a helical lobe or screw compressor. Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of a two-impeller straight-lobe compressor. Fig. 6 illustrates the operation of a liquid¬piston compressor. Centrifugal Compressors Centrifugal compressors deliver 0.94 m3/s (2000 cfm) or more of air, and they are best suited to supply¬ing large volumes of compressed air for base loads. The efficiency of a centrifugal compressor declines rapidly when its operation deviates from its design point. If the power cost is not a critical consideration, a centrif¬ugal compressor is attractive as a result of the low initial and installation costs and the high degree of reliability. Fig. 7 illustrates a typical four-stage centrif¬ugal compressor, and Fig. 8 is a cross section of this type of unit. COMPRESSOR SELECTION The process of selecting a compressor requires sev¬eral considerations, including the capacity, the control system, the location, the power supply, and the cooling provisions. Compressor Capacity To determine the required capacity, the total air quantity and pressure requirements must be calculated. The air consumption of various tools, as listed in Table 1, must be included in this calculation. Some of the other considerations include: 1) The correction factor for altitude, as listed in Table 2, must be included in the calculation. While pneumatic tools require additional compressed air as the altitude increases, the compressor produces less. 2) A correction factor must be incorporated for the use of multiple tools. Table 3 lists appropriate correc¬tion factors for rock drills.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

Computer control of the minerals beneficiation process is limited by a lack of adequate sensors to provide information on the current state of the process. Recent reduction in the cost of image acquisition and powerful inexpensive computers make use of computer vision as sensory input in process control a possibility. In the phosphate industry, the amount of apatite in phosphate tailings is estimated by inspection. For machine vision, a simple 256 x 512 color image of the tailings was captured via an inexpensive color video camera on an IBM PC. Initially, the image is converted to gray scale and displayed on an EGA color monitor. A program was written which identifies the different constituents of the sample by analyzing the gray scale levels for the digitized picture. In other instances the minerals are identified by their relative color intensities. The amount of each constituent is determined with good accuracy from the area it occupies on the image.

Vibration screens are commonly used not only in classifying bulk material but also in dewatering it. The lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. Firstly, the dewatering of bulk material will be shown, based on a physical model. Because of the oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. The comparison between dewatering theory and practice will be shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements, which have been conducted on a vibration screen, demonstrate that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibilities of improving vibration dewatering will be described.

As part of research to develop a coal handleability index that predicts the ease with which coal will flow through a handling system, comparative tests were conducted with a Johanson Indicizer and a low-stress triaxial apparatus on 12 coals at a variety of gradations and moisture contents. The lndicizer test provides a rapid method for generating data associated with coal handling characteristics. The arching index measured with the Indicizer is a function of the geometry of the apparatus as well as the properties of the coal. The handleability index determined from triaxial data is a more direct measure of coal characteristics. The handleability index shows a wider range of values than the arching index and, therefore, appears to be more sensitive to coal variations. Neither the arching index nor the ratholing index, as measured with the Indicizer, agreed well with the handleability index. This is attributed to differences in sample preparation as well as to the tests themselves.

The flotation behavior of a -28 mesh Pittsburgh No. 8 coal sample is investigated through the use of Scanning Electron Microscopy in conjunction with Image Analysis. Release analysis is used to generate the flotation products, which are then characterized to provide the particulate composition in terms of pyrite, mineral matter and carbonaceous material. The results of this investigation indicate that the material recovered in the first stage of release analysis tends to be well-liberated carbonaceous material. This is followed by an increase in the recovery of middlings and fines in the later stages of the process. Any free carbonaceous material remaining in the tailings from the release analysis test tends to be associated with the very fine sizes (-400 mesh). Pyrite recovery is attributed to the hydrophobicity provided by small inclusions of carbonaceous material, since the amount of truly liberated pyrite particles (i.e., 100% pyrite) present in the sample is found to be negligible.

Qualitative and interpretive information as obtained from geological and/or geophysical studies, in addition to precise measurement, is incorporated into the estimation process through an indicator variable. The indicator conditioned estimator is formulated as a cokriging, and its expression is data value dependent as opposed to that of the traditional kriging estimators. The solution of the dual cokriging system provides simultaneously an estimate of the unknown and an estimate of the conditional probability that the unknown belongs to a specific population or class. Being an unbiased and minimum-error-variance estimator by construction, the indicator conditioned estimator is better in the least square sense than the ordinary kriging estimator because it uses additional information carried by the indicator data. A case study using a large reference database is presented; the indicator conditioned estimates have a smaller conditional bias and a smaller error variance than the ordinary kriging estimates. The results also showed that the indicator conditioned estimator is more efficient for selection in mining.

A study based on a statistically designed sets of experiments (central composite design) was conducted to determine the optimum conditions for leaching a subbituminous coal (7.0 % ash) from the middle Wyodak seam in mild sulfuric acid solutions. The statistical analysis was conducted with the ash content and ash removal as the dependent variables and with the coal loading, acid concentration, ferric ion concentration, and temperature as the independent variables. Treatment of the experimental data via a simple genetic algorithm (GA) revealed that acid concentration and temperature are the two most critical variables. Unlike the case with bituminous coal, the ferric ions addition shows no beneficial effect. The optimum "macro response" predicted by GA was verified experimentally; the ash content was reduced to 2.7%, which is close to the value predicted by GA. The ash content was further reduced to 1.7% in a two-stage leaching process devised by incorporating the optimization results with that of leaching kinetic studies.

A fresh dust generator was designed and built in order to study the agglomeration behavior and other characteristics of freshly generated airborne dust. The size distribution of the freshly generated quartz airborne dust produced by the generator was measured both directly in air and after dispersion in water. It was observed that same dust particles had an apparently coarser size distribution in air than in water, suggesting possible agglomeration of the dust particles. It was also observed that the size distribution obtained by a cascade impactor was very similar to the liquid dispersed size distribution, implying deagglomeration by the impactor. The agglomeration was confirmed by microscopic observations of particles in air and those collected on a microscope slide. The extent of agglomeration played a decisive role on the fraction of the dust actually becoming airborne. It was also found that contamination of the airborne dust by the rolls of the crusher was almost twice as much as that of the product.

The axial mixing characteristics of a pilot-scale flotation column were investigated with the objective of identifying means to mitigate the extent of axial mixing that adversely affects its grade/recovery performance. A wide range of design and operating conditions was investigated and the experimental results, obtained using the dynamic response method, were analyzed using three axial mixing models. The dynamic response of the column can best be described using the axial dispersion model. The results obtained suggest that the value of the axial dispersion coefficient, EL. can be signi6cantly reduced by judicial selection of hydrodynamic conditions and/or the use of column inserts that suppress the onset of hydrodynamic instabilities inherent to the operation of conventional flotation columns. Up to 40% reduction in the value of EL was thus obtained by using spargers that produce more uniform bubble sizes, while up to 30% reductions were obtained by controlling the residual frother concentration.

Mineral-processing plants commonly rely on homogenization and proportioning facilities to reduce the variability of incoming raw materials and to blend different materials together to satisfy quality specifications. To determine appropriate designs for these facilities, plant designers need information about the variability of the mined materials, measured as the materials enter the plant. But if the materials to be mined in the future differ greatly from those used in the past, only information extracted from exploratory drilling of the materials in the around may be available. Fortunately, useful information for plant design may still be obtained by combining simulated mineral deposits with simulations of likely mining procedures. The output of a mining simulation is a time series of simulated raw-material characteristics that should mimic the behavior of the real materials to be delivered to the plant in the future. This paper shows how conditional simulations of coregionalized ore grades can furnish information useful in the design of homogenization and proportioning systems.
