Based on the current results of field practice and on experimental data obtained in the laboratory with a suitable testing apparatus, the industrial operation of diamond wire cutting can be simulated by means of a mathematical model capable of predicting the cutting velocity and the wear rate of the tool, and thence the cost figures, achievable for a variety of conditions (kind of rock, size and shape of the cut, position of the equipment) according to a predetermined setting strategy (peripheral velocity, pull- back force). The paper gives a short outline of the model and discusses the simulation results obtained in a number of cases aiming at singling out the most favourable conditions for a cost-effective use of diamond wire.

Column flotation technique is applied for the depression of the magnetic material by the application of an axial magnetic field from chalcopyrite ore. It is observed that an increase in the intensity of magnetic field from 0 to 316.8 oersteds decreased the magnetic content in the froth from 25 to 2 %. . This might be due to retention of magnetic material in the magnetizable zone and the diffusion of nonmagnetics through it. The effect of air velocity increased the magnetic content in the froth and total froth content also. At low gas velocity the tiny bubbles are formed whereas at high gas velocity these coalesce into big bubbles and slugs formed breaks the magnetizable zone. This study opens a new field called 'Magneto-flotation'.

A longwall face conveyor system serves the primary function as all material handling systems; i.e., to transport material between the source and its destination. However, the conveyor system must provide many other functions as opposed to the traditional belt conveyor system. In this paper, we will attempt to contrast the longwall face conveyor system with a belt conveyor system. In addition, the unique problems encountered along with the solutions to these problems will be covered. Table 1 lists the characteristics required of each conveyor system. The table demonstrates the contrast in the two systems. Both must be designed specifically to encounter its unique problems. The balance of this paper will explain how the longwall face conveyor is designed to address its requirements.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant was investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of the experiments were carried out at 75°C, and the results were compared with consideraton given to the equilibrium of the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide-containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia were considered at three different temperatures. It was found that, with the introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (I-), iodine (I2) and triiodide (I3-) is increased substantially, which in turn helps the rate of gold dissolution. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical-controlled mechanism.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has thoroughly investigated the flocculation of phosphatic clay waste with polyethylene oxide (PEO). The studies included both theoretical and applied aspects of the flocculation sequence. The screen dewatering technique developed by the Bureau was field tested at four different Florida phosphate mines. The results of these field studies are presented. Also, to determine the mechanisms of the interaction of PEO with montmorillonite clays common to the phosphatic clay waste, a number of theoretical studies were conducted. An empirical equation was developed to describe the amount of PEO needed for flocculation. Infrared, ion exchange, and rheology techniques were used to study the interaction of PEO with Florida clays. The results of these studies are also presented.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. In addition to the concentration of ammonia, the parameters that affect adsorption include temperature, degree of agitation and anion and cation concentrations. In the study, it was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions is dependent on the initial silver concentration in the solution. It was also found that the recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions is not as effective us gold. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rapid initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy ,for the adsorption was measured at 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

Following closure of an old asbestos mine in Zidani, Kozani Prefecture, Greece, the geotechnical and environmental restoration of the tailings slopes was required. The geotechnical aspects of the restoration included the formation of gentler slopes to increase stability, in combination with drainage works for the same purpose. The environmental aspects of the restoration included covering the slopes with successive layers of soil in order to minimize infiltration of rainwater, and hence the potential for further transport of asbestos fibers, and to provide a suitable layer for revegetation of the slope. The paper presents results of slope stability evaluation using both limit equilibrium and finite element analyses and raises some issues related to reducing impacts to the geoenvironment when designing such restoration projects.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

"The Kittila underground mine is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe and has an estimated mine life through 2034. The Kittila mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 kilometres north of Helsinki and 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The ore at the Kittila mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulphide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. The orebody consists of a complex pinch-and-swell structure including up to 100 different gold mineralization lenses. Fluctuating gold prices and other economic considerations increase the need to maintain and update the mining plans more frequently. Over 3,000 stopes need to be designed and optimized once a year for the LOM-plan and more frequent updates are needed for mid- and short term plans as well as production studies. As a large part of ore body is very sensitive to cost and gold price changes, stope optimization is crucial to find the best possible production scenario for every moment. Kittilä has gone through several methods for stope design and optimization. Most recently the Deswik Stope Optimizer (Deswik.SO) has been successfully used. Dewsik.SO has helped Kittilä to design and optimize stopes in a timely and cost efficient manner. Together with the Deswik suite of planning tools, reliable and auditable plans are created. This paper describes the methods used for stope design and optimization at Kittilä. THE KITTILÄ MINE The Kittila underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittila achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two open pits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small open pits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future. The Kittila mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 kilometres north of Helsinki and 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittila is Agnico’s longest-life mine. The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 4.7 million ounces (32 million tonnes at 4.6 g/t gold). Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3,000-tonne-per-day operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1,000 tonnes/day, starting by the end of 2014. The region around the Kittila mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittila Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle's Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between iron-rich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200-metre-thick structural zone known as the “Suurikuusikko Trend”. This trend hosts the Kittila deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 kilometres."

Industry requires higher speed sheet stacking. High speed sheet stacking requires equipment and techniques to solve several inherent difficult problems, such as the tendency for sheets to sail, and the need for a means to absorb the kinetic energy of the sheet without damaging the sheet. Accurate alignment of the sheets on the stack is another problem difficult to solve. The paper first analyzes the process of sheet handling into its basic elemental steps. It then describes equipment and techniques presently used for moderate sheet handling speeds, with emphasis on how each step in the stacking process is accomplished by the present equipment. The limitations to speed-up of present equipment is discussed. New high speed equipment, either recently introduced to the market, or in the process of development, is described. Magnetic, air float and vacuum conveyor stackers are compared.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

The struggle to get the minerals industry seriously interested in high intensity wet magnetic separation* has been difficult. The high capital cost of the equipment, the lack of basic research, the lack of operating information, and the diverse characteristics associated with different minerals and ores have prevented the development and use of HIMS-W on a wide scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metal Climax, Inc., located at Climax, Colorado, was among the first companies in the Americas in recent years to support the development of HIMS-W to recover weakly magnetic minerals on a large scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, one of the world's largest underground mines, processes about 40,000 tons per day of ore, from which about fifty million pounds of molybdenum disulfide are produced each year. By-products include tungsten, iron pyrite, tin, and some monazite.

This paper presents an innovative mining method with the application of the water jet. The basic principle of this mining method is to mine a thin panel slice with a water jet system and to allow the roof to deflect elastically and subsequently to be supported by the coal floor without artificial roof support. Through the sequential mining of layers from top to bottom, the entire seam is extracted and the roof rests upon the mine floor. The advantages of this method are that the safety of underground operation can be greatly increased and the surface overburden disturbance will be markedly reduced. . An economic evaluation of such a system is presented for the total cost estimated per ton of coal mined at the face. This evaluation is then compared to that of a continuous mining section utilizing a room and pillar mining method.

Historically, Vanadium and Uranium have been precipitated together in carbonate sill circuits. A separation of the salts of the two metals was then made on the basis of the fact that the reduced, salts of vanadium are more solo to and those of uranium lose soluble than the respective salts of higher valence. In practice this was carried out by fusing the precipitated combined concentrate with salt, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide with oil soaked sawdust mixed into the charge as the reducing agent. Generally the fusion was carried out batch wise and the resulting slag or glass leached in water. A good, fusion and three or four decantation washes resulted in almost complete recovery of the vanadium in the liquid phase and a very high recovery of the uranium as a dense black U02 solid.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. The design of an ore-processing plant requires a high degree of cooperation among the geological, mining and metallurgical engineers. The purposes of this section are to provide mill design information most commonly needed by the mine planners and management, and to summarize the kinds of information that must be supplied to the mill designer to enable him to provide a suitable plant. 28.1-BASIS OF DESIGN NORMAN WEISS 28.1.1-SIZE OF PROJECT The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect, a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd without major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding and processing. Hours per shift also are an important factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the percentage lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into account. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure. but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as 10 yr, or as a specific daily capacity over the first 2 yr, next 4 yr, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 mi southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent.' where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. 28.1.2-EXPECTED LIFE The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis which, in turn, is based on many factors.' From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-yr project may be wasteful for a 5-yr operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grinding-the former may be found more economical for a 5-yr operation, and the other, more costly, method more economical for a 15 to 20-vi- life.

Since mechanically suitable grinding mills were available in 1908, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. First and foremost they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect the mill structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition they had to be able to efficiently transfer the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. The liners also had to be easily attached to the mill when new and removed from the mill when worn out. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. 1

The increasing demand for large volumes of relatively low-cost cement has resulted in the need for an equally low-cost high-volume means for transporting that cement. It has been estimated that 20% - 25% of the total cost of cement to the buyer represents delivery expenses from the mills. For instance, during the 1972 cement shortage in the Southeastern region of the U. S., bid prices for a ton of cement delivered increased to $45 compared to $20 average at mill price, i. e. , F. O. B. plant. Much of the increase was caused by the anticipated higher cement shipping costs for longer hauling distance. The exceptionally high bid price, of course, was not the price quoted by the successful bidder. Thus, clearly, cement is not a marketable commodity unless it can be economically transported to the consumer.

Communication about the energy problem has come at us in great profusion during the last couple of years--reports, speeches, editorials, advertisements--and events. Events such as the Arab embargo on oil exports which vividly demonstrated the world's dependence on oil, a finite and nonrenewable resource. And the three-fold increase in the price of oil which provides a constant reminder of the political and economic implications of dependence on foreign oil. A distinction among countries exists today which was almost inconsequential two years ago--the oil exporting nations and the oil consuming nations. The only rational way for the consuming countries to lessen the political and economic clout of the OPEC group is to reduce their dependence on oil. The United States is capable of playing a significant part in such a move for several reasons.

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."
