Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

Characterizing the abrasiveness of soil/rock and the allowable wear of hard-facing products in various conditions is a critical factor in selection of the best material for certain applications related to drilling and excavation in mining and construction industries. The Soil Abrasion Index test machine at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) is one of the recently developed unique systems capable of testing soil/crushed rock abrasion under various conditions, such as dry, wet, and saturated settings. It is also capable of testing the performance of various types of hard-facing materials in a given geo-material. This paper studies the wear properties of different hard-facing materials in various crushed rocks from a surface mining operation in the iron range region of the USA. The hard-facing materials include regular and hardened steels and six different specialized hard facings, based on chromium carbide. The soil/rock include a standard sand and two rock samples from the surface mine. Fourteen abrasion tests were conducted, where the weight loss of each hard-facing material was measured over timespans up to 1 h of testing. The results show the distinct performance differences between the steels with 17 HRC and 43 HRC hardness and the hard-facing products for this application. The results show the possibility to evaluate the abrasiveness of different rocks at a mine or construction site and the performance of various hard facings in similar working conditions. This is a practical solution for selection of the cutting tool or reinforcement of bucket lips and truck beds for comparison of relative wear life between different wear-resistant materials.

The mobility of gold and silver metals from refractory ores is very low due to free metal ions in their bodies that bind the transportable and free metal molecules or they are encapsulated in minerals such as sulfides, arsenosulfides, carbonaceous, and clayey materials which make it difficult to extract them. As known from the literature, the enrichment of oxide refractory gold, silver ores, Ag, and Au-rich flotation concentrated from sulfur refractory ores can be leached in the chloride-hypochlorite solutions. In this work, the leaching approach was studied to extract silver ions from refractory ores in the presence of hypochlorite media under high pressure. The mineralogical and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the sample indicated that the silver was encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals in fine sizes. In order to obtain the optimum leaching conditions for the silver ore, the effects of several parameters, namely, temperature, leaching time, NaCl and NaOCl concentration, solid ratio, and particle size on the leaching recovery were investigated in detail. The leaching experiments showed that the highest silver recovery of 62.35% was obtained under the following conditions: temperature of 150 °C, oxygen pressure of 1800 kPa, leaching time of 2 h, concentrations of 2 mol/dm3 and 0.4 mol/dm3 for NaCl and NaOCl, respectively, the solid ratio of 30%, and particle size (d80) 15 μm. The results obtained from this study indicated that the enrichment of refractory silver ores to extract the silver encapsulated in barite and quartz minerals could be possible in the chlorite-hypochlorite under high pressure, a relatively shorter leaching time compared to conventional cyanide leaching.

In underground coal mines, three types of roof failure (2)*, tensile, local, and shear, occur in the development entries and in room-and-pillar extraction areas. Most of the tensile failures in the roof at the center of the mine opening as well as those local failures due to fracture or jointing can be controlled by roof bolts, trusses, and timbering. However, control of the shear failure at the sides of the roof (or the cutter-roof caving) has not been successful with ordinary roof control methods. The only effective method, when there is an indication of cutter-roof caving, is to use cribs, which are costly and make transportation, ventilation, and production difficult. Frequently, the operator allows the cutter roof to cave and then cleans it up rather than trying to stop it. This shear type of roof failure is often associated with large areas which may progressively involve several hundred feet of roof caving at one occurrence. At times, this shear failure occurs suddenly with little or no warning. This can result in buried equipment and great danger to the safety of personnel. This shear failure may be due to one or more of the following: high stress concentrations at the corner of the roof from (1) high horizontal to vertical load ratio, (2) orthotropic elastic properties of rock and coal, (3) greater stiffness of the immediate roof layer than of the secondary roof layer, (4) viscoelastic behavior of rock and coal, and (5) geometry and material properties of the geologic setting. Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

The mining industry is one of the foundations of modern society, providing not only the raw materials needed to maintain a contemporary lifestyle, but also serving as a basis for the development of future technologies. From the most basic components of an appliance to the materials needed to design an electric car or a space rocket, each raw material has gone through a painstaking procedure of extraction and processing, and ways to make this process more efficient will be of great help to meet an ever-increasing demand for minerals. One of the biggest challenges when extracting mineral resources is to measure the variability of the mineral body prior to processing. Comminution is the most power-demanding stage, and the lack of geometallurgical testing, often for financial reasons, may result in an inefficient operation. The Geopyörä Rock Breakage test was developed with the objective of making mineral variability data more accessible by providing both standard comminution parameters and rock mechanical properties at low cost, and with a modest sample size, allowing a larger number of samples to be tested to reduce uncertainties and assure productivity. The objective of this paper is to present the results of an extensive validation of this new rock breakage method against two of the main tests currently in use, namely the SMC® and Bond ball mill work index tests. More than 100 samples have been tested and the results compared, showing that the new method can accurately estimate the parameters of the traditional tests. This confirms that the new test is a reliable tool for comminution and geometallurgical tests.

The vast majority of tailings in the Western Australian Goldfields are deposited in purpose-built storage facilities. At mine-sites with open-pit mining operations there is also the requirement to mine and stack large volumes of waste rock, usually into surface waste dumps. As these dumps have typically 30% of their gross volume present as voids, there is the potential to use this void space for the storage of tailings. The concept of co-disposal is to store the tailings material in the void space of the waste dumps, eliminating the need for a separate tailings storage facility. Dominion Mining Limited have been investigating the possibility of using co-disposal as a means of tailings storage. Laboratory testwork has been used to understand some of the issues associated with the concept, and assist in the design of an on-site demonstration of the concept. Co-disposal offers a number of potential advantages, and despite a number of practical hurdles to overcome, considerable economic and environmental benefits could be realised if this concept can be demonstrated on a commercial scale. The major advantage of such a system is to remove the need to build, operate and rehabilitate a separate tailings storage facility. Rehabilitation can be incremental throughout the mine life as the co-disposal site will be virtually indistinguishable from a current waste dump in both size and form. Other potential advantages include more stable waste dumps, less land area disturbed on the project site, and better water recovery from the tailings.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents a method of calculation of internal moments and thrusts in tunnel liners of any material. The method is intended for hand calculation, but as it is numerical in nature it can be programmed for use in computers. The information required for design or analysis is presumed active internal and external pressures, the effective moment of inertia and cross-sectional area of the tunnel liner, the liner's modulus of elasticity, and the coefficient of subgrade reaction of the material surrounding the tunnel. Starting with active external and internal pressures and following the procedure described herein using the structural properties of the liner and surrounding medium, external passive reactions and internal moments and thrusts are calculated. The method is intended for use by design engineers. GENERAL Experience has shown that flexible tunnel liners have less internal bending stresses than those calculated using classical structural theory applied to free-standing arches. In fact, liners which are very flexible in relation to the surrounding soil or rock have virtually no bending moments when compared to free-standing arches supporting equal active loads. In order for this phenomenon to occur, the original active pressure diagram must be "modified" by additional external reactions (passive pressures) from the surrounding material, so that the thrust line within the lining follows the centroid of the tunnel arch more closely than that of a similar free-standing arch. As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. INTRODUCTION The discovery of oil and gas reserves in the North American Arctic has led to substantial thought being given to their development. Systems adequate for exploration are not always, or even often, suitable for permanent installations. Combinations of offshore pipeline, drilling ships, platforms, sub-sea systems, sand islands and -ice island bases have been proposed. However, conditions in the Arctic are such that these methods may be difficult or impossible to implement. Problems exist with (1) the freezing of the Arctic Ocean surface for 9 - 10 months per year, (2) the movement of sea ice, (3) scouring of bottom sediments by ice islands and icebergs to great depths below the ocean bottom and (4) deep water channels. Any method which can avoid the problems associated with surface construction in these very adverse conditions merits detailed examination. One of the proposed solutions is to tunnel from a convenient or available access point to a point within the field, construct a chamber large enough to accommodate the drilling equipment and drill the development wells in a protected environment. Service and delivery lines would use the access tunnel and further tunnels and chambers would be constructed in a radiating pattern to develop the whole field. In order to determine the feasibility of underground construction in the North American Arctic, it is first necessary to understand the geologic and environmental factors which would affect such construction, to be knowledgeable concerning the problems and then to consider the techniques appropriate to the conditions which will be encountered, bearing in mind the need to minimize both con-

A finite-difference model using a digital computer was constructed to assist in the water management of a proposed oil-shale mining operation in the Piceance Basin in Colorado. The presence of ground water is both a detriment and a benefit for development of the resource. On one hand, dewatering is required because permeable zones are present in and above the oil-shale sequence, and rich oil shale at the proposed mine is as much as 457 m (1500 ft) below the water table. On the other hand, ground water is the most feasible source of water for processing the oil shale. A ground- water model was constructed to simulate the development of an environmentally acceptable water-management system that will satisfy both the mine-dewatering requirements and the water-supply requirements for processing. The ground-water model discussed in this chapter was constructed for the Rio Blanco Oil Shale Co. (RBOSC) by International Engineering Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Co. The model was applied to evaluate dewatering and water control systems for several open-pit mining plans initially investigated to develop Federal Lease Tract C-a. A collateral application of the model analyses was to project effects of the proposed dewatering operation on the regional ground-water regime in connection with a permit acquisition program by RBOSC. Subsequently, RBOSC has completely changed its mine development plan and has adopted modeling and related techniques more suitable for study of that plan and dewatering operation. When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

Uranium and its decay series are associated with phosphate deposits of marine origin. Uranium concentrations are on the order of 100 to 200 ppm in matrix from the Bone Valley formation of Central Florida and about 25% this value in matrix mined from the Hawthorne formation in North Florida. Occupational radiation exposure due to this source has been under study in Florida since the mid 1970's (Windham, Partridge, Horton 1976; Roessler and Prince 1978). This report is based on findings of an industry-wide scoping survey conducted by the University of Florida during March 1976 through May 1977 and subsequent studies in selected individual facilities. PHOSPHATE MINING OPERATIONS Mining and beneficiation operations are diagramed in Figure 1. At the excavation site, electric powered draglines remove the overburden and expose the phosphate matrix (ore) which is then slurried and pumped to the beneficiation site. At the washer stage of the beneficiation plant, the matrix is subjected to washing and screening. A coarse product, "pebble" is produced and sent to storage piles while the fine fraction is passed through a series of cyclones to remove the clays. The generated clay suspension is sent to settling ponds while the remaining sand-sized fraction is sent to the flotation plant. At the flotation plant, phosphate particles are recovered from the fine sand particles of similar size through several stages of treatment with reagents, agitation and separation of floating and sinking fractions. The high grade concentrate produced is transferred to storage while the sand tailings are discarded. [ ]

A laboratory study of dense-medium cycloning with Redstone seam coal has been conducted. The investigation was performed using a 203 mm (8 inch) Heyl-Patterson dense-medium cyclone. Two underflow orifices of 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) and 44.5 mm (1.75 inch) in diam were used. The effects of feed pressure and particle size were determined on the cycloning performance. In addition, the cyclone performances with coal-rich and refuse-rich samples were also investigated. The results of the experiments were analyzed using basic hydrodynamic principles. The increase in the feed pressure increases the specific gravity of separation (defined as the specific gravity of a particle which has an equal chance of reporting to either the overflow or underfow) for both underfow orifices. The specific gravity of separation increases as the particle size decreases with the smaller underflow orifice. However, an opposite relationship has been observed with the larger under flow orifice. The separation becomes sharper with the smaller under flow orifice than with the larger underflow orifice especially for fine material. Also, the separation becomes sharper with an increased feed pressure for a coal-rich sample. However, this effect is less significant for a refuse-rich sample. This means that a high feed pressure is required for a coal-rich sample to maintain a good separation. It also means that applying a high feed pressure provides a good separation regardless of the type of feed coal in terms of ash content in the solid.

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

South Coast Water District (District) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel (BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Mon-arch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,424-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch Techite gravity sewer pipeline critical to the District Sanitary Sewer Collection System that conveys 1 MGD of raw sewage to a wastewater treatment plant. The original tunnel was constructed in 1954 and the sewer line replaced in 1974. Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews have documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel within the past few years (Sancon 2003). Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline. A 50-foot section of the tunnel was determined to be in need of immediate repairs, which were carried out from January to August in 2007. This section was enlarged to a horseshoe shape and lined with shotcrete. The pipe was encased in concrete in the invert of the new enlarged cross section. Hatch Mott Mac-Donald (HMM) designed the emergency repairs, carried out an assessment of the rest of the tunnel alignment, and is currently developing a work plan for rehabilitating the entire tunnel.

In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.
