Technology development has played a crucial role in the minerals industry throughout history. The development of new technology allows mankind to produce metals and minerals at progressively lower cost of production in real terms, and therefore at progressively lower prices, improving their availability, accessibility and utilization worldwide. However, the developers of such technology are not guaranteed to reap the benefits from this effort: There is an expectation that technology developers will gain an advantage over their competitors. Is this a short-term benefit that results from a temporary cost or efficiency improvement, or is it a sustainable longer term "edge" that prevails even after metal or mineral price has been eroded by the implementation of a major step change technology? This issue is examined by reference to several case study examples in the copper industry. BACKGROUND The development and adoption of new technology has played a crucial role in the commodity minerals industry throughout history. As new, cost-efficient technologies are commercialized, the cost of production decreases, and this enables lower grade ore to be processed profitably. This in turn increases the availability and supply of the metal or mineral of interest, and ultimately (in a free market environment where the supply- demand balance determines price) inevitably decreases the metal or mineral price. This leads to the question: Why should mining companies invest in (new) technology development if the result is a decrease in the product price? Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

There are many potential pitfalls in the commercialization of innovative technology. The failures often are remembered longer than the successes, thereby serving as deterrents to subsequent attempts. The mineral industry's future depends on effective innovation. So it is essential that the causes of failure are understood. Innovation can be examined equally well in the context of geophysics, geology or mining. However the author's experience has been in mineral processing and chemical engineering. So the following discussion is limited to processes and/or plants for producing mineral concentrates, metals or inorganic chemicals. More of what follows has to do with underachievement or failure than success. But this article demonstrates that there is a strong element of predictability in the former. Furthermore, it is a credit to the minerals industry and to the engineering profession that a very high percentage of projects succeed in achieving design capacity and forecast operating costs. Innovation means the introduction of something new. In this article, the words "innovative technology" are used broadly. They include new processes and novel combinations of established unit operations, as well as novel types of processing equipment or largest-ever equipment models. The discussion of project outcomes is based on personal experience or on published information. Citations are given for technical publications that provide either project information or insights into the methodology used to analyze project performance. However, specific projects have not been identified due to the rather negative connotations of some of the conclusions drawn about the less favorable outcomes.

This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

The following are some of his thoughts on uranium?s place in the global energy picture. ME: What are Energy Fuels Resources? thoughts on the global nuclear power industry? Steele: The global nuclear power industry is a major contributor to the electrical needs of the world. Though generation by nuclear reactors has primarily attracted attention through the reactor accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power continues to quietly and safely provide power to a growing and power-hungry world population. As of March 2008, 30 countries were operating 439 nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power plants provided about 15 percent of the world?s electricity production in 2007. France leads the world in nuclear utilization, with 77 percent of its power coming from nuclear plants. And Lithuania, Slovakia and Belgium each derive more than 50 percent of their power needs from nuclear plants. For much of the developed world, nuclear generation has already been contributing significantly to the supply of electricity. Additionally, 34 new nuclear plants are under construction in 14 countries. Leading the rush to build new nuclear generating plants are China, Russia and India. Each of these countries is building six new nuclear power plants. These 18 plants, totaling almost 12,000 MW of generation capacity, will require about 7.25 kt (16 million lbs) of U3O8 for their initial fuel load and will consume about 2.45 kt/a (5.4 million lbs/year) for the rest of their operating lives. The rest of the world, outside of the United States, has used nuclear power as a viable and economic generation alternative since the commercialization of utility nuclear reactors. And current activity supports the strong future of the nuclear alternative internationally.

"The current paper presents the results of a study designed to explore the types of practices that are fundamentally important to developing and maintaining comprehensive risk-based health and safety management systems (HSMS) in mining organizations. Eighteen practicing health and safety (H&S) executives, managers, and professionals from a variety of mining commodities were asked to assess the fundamental importance of 20 distinct elements and 133 different practices assembled from a review of several HSMS consensus standards. The research approach assumes that developing and maintaining a robust HSMS requires unwavering attention to activities designed to either: 1) directly contribute to a risk management system’s plan-do-check-act cycle; or 2) build an organization’s internal infrastructure without which the cycle cannot be sustained. The results of this study suggest that the following areas require consistent focus and attention: Leadership Development; Accountability; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Development; System Coordination; Culture Enhancement; Behavior Optimization; and Risk Management Studies. Each element and its corresponding top-ranked and top-rated practices are discussed.INTRODUCTION Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, occupational health and safety (H&S) management has been a topic of practitioner thought and academic inquiry (1). In the U.S., decades of regulation and research have resulted in a surplus of prescriptive information (techniques, tools, approaches, standards, programs, practices, policies, etc.). With an abundance of such information, a simple H&S solution to address a problem in the U.S. mining industry may seem straightforward. Counter to this assertion, however, some evidence suggests that the abundance of information may create complexity and cause confusion in the minds of organizational leaders and H&S managers, ultimately discouraging the voluntary pursuit of a sound approach (2). In line with this perspective, in 2006 the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) formed an independent commission to examine H&S management issues within the mining industry. The findings of the commission called for the mining industry to adopt a risk-based management paradigm. In the presentation of its findings, the commission stated that “…every mine should employ a sound risk-analysis process, should conduct a risk analysis, and should develop a management plan to address significant hazards identified by the analysis” (3). Grounded in the well-known plan-do-check-act cycle, the recommended risk management system allows for mines to ground strategic management choices in their mine-specific hazards and risk profiles"

"Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) measurements were taken at Tronox’s Westvaco Trona mine in Wyoming. Both shift-average and real-time monitoring using Elf pumps and Airtec analyzers, were used. The mine’s underground transportation fleet consists of more than 250 diesel-powered vehicles. A vehicle monitoring log tracked fleet usage during the test; logged data consisted of vehicle type, direction of travel, and time. The log was used in analysis to determine the DPM spread rate, of normally operating equipment, in the different entries with respect to vehicle location. Airflow velocity measurements at the stations were taken during the survey. The survey results also identified vehicles with higher emission rates. An ECOM gas and a MAHA DPM analyzer, both located in the mine’s underground emission shop, were used to obtain various vehicle emission rates. The correlation of the workshop and field measurements was investigated with regard to the machine activity, fuel usage and atmospheric conditions. The results were used to identify and execute a ventilation project to reroute 45% of diesel shop air back to intake entries, by interlocking an automated door and a regulator. The result is reduced DPM downstream. INTRODUCTION DPM has been classified as a potential occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rule governing DPM exposures in metal and nonmetal mines cites total carbon (TC), a summation of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) obtained by NIOSH Method 5040, as a surrogate for determining DPM exposures (Noll, 2006). MSHA personnel use the 1973 sampling criteria outlined by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for collecting compliance-based respirable and inhalation samples in metal/nonmetal mines. Instrumentation developments are allowing improved real time monitoring of ventilation parameters. DPM is within the aerodynamic particle size range of the samplers used for respirable and inhalable dust measurements. If a sampler used by MSHA to collect inhalable or respirable dust samples in underground metal/nonmetal mines was used to collect DPM, both the DPM and mine ore dust would accumulate on the sample filter (Noll, 2006). To comply with the requirement and lower the DPM exposure, mines are implementing a variety of control technologies such as emission based maintenance programs where adjustments or repairs are performed on the vehicles (McGinn, 2000)."

"The third phase of the Bagram Drainage System project at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan included construction of a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel. The tunnel penetrated mostly stiff to hard clayey and silty soils. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to use pipe-jacking with a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) instead of the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance method was evaluated and supported using hand calculations. Contractor support was provided throughout the project by providing design reviews and instrumentation monitoring during construction. This paper compares the value-engineering proposal to the specified method and describes the construction conditions encountered. INTRODUCTION As part of a larger improvement project at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel was constructed to provide additional capacity for Coyote Creek to pass below several critical structures, including taxiways and the main runway, for mitigation of recurring flooding (see Figures 1 and 2). Overburden over the tunnel crown ranged from about 3 m to 5.5 m. An existing cast-in-place twin barrel concrete culvert runs approximately parallel to the new tunnel and is within about 8 m at its closest point. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) method (steel ribs and lagging or steel liner plate with a carrier pipe later grouted in-place) called for installation of the required drainage pipe by pipe-jacking (one-pass installation) using a slurry microtunnel boring machine (MTBM). The critical nature of the operations at the air base resulted in significant construction coordination challenges and a greater than usual need to avoid excessive settlements. Substantial restrictions were placed on drilling of investigative borings and installing instrumentation near runways and taxiways due to drill mast height. The prime contractor was SERKA TAAHHUT INSAAT A. S. (SERKA), the microtunneling subcontractor was Ludwig Pfeiffer Microtunnel GmbH & Co.KG (Pfeiffer), the jacking pipe designer was Gollwitzer Pipe and Shaft Technology GmbH (Gollwitzer), and the contractor’s tunnel engineer was Lachel & Associates, Inc. (Lachel). Lachel provided contractor support throughout the project including preparation of a VECP/Design Summary (including interpretation of existing and new geotechnical information), design reviews for jacking pipe, estimating settlement of an existing drainage structure above the new tunnel, and instrumentation planning, monitoring, and analysis during construction."

Although many notable scientific investigations relating to roof control have been made, roof control still must be considered one of the more baffling problems confronting the miner. Each year contributions are made to our understanding and techniques in dealing with various single phases of the overall problem, however, an equation considering all the variables involved in roof control, if formulated, would indeed be hopelessly complex. Among the factors to be considered is first, gravity which is always acting but which is sometimes less of a problem than lateral forces. There are lateral forces due to expansion, resulting from the weight of overlying rock; to these must be added lateral stresses of orogenic or tectonic orgin, which may be enormous. Stresses due to plastic flow of beds, water pressure, gas pressure, expansion due to absorption of water, faults, joints, fractures, pot heads, and the like may complicate the solution. Therefore, we must base decisions on roof control, and roof bolting in particular, largely on experience, and far too often on few "knowns" and many "unknowns", The development of "in situ" roof trusses may prove of benefit because, they unlike roof bolting, promise positive calculable roof support. These trusses require installation of steel tensioned rods in the roof, which rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern similar to a bridge truss, the roof rock acting to transmit the compression forces. The simplest form of truss (see figure 1) consists merely of two steel rods anchored at the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45° over the pillars, collared near the the middle of the room, the lower ends of the rods being connected together by tierods and turnbuckles. Used in this way, a 3/4" diameter rod can offer greater support than a 10" x 5-3/4" wide flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckle, uplist on the roof can be produced,, the downward reaction being transmitted to the pillars by the rods. This simplest form of truss has been used in rooms up to 24' in width. Trusses of four panels, that is, consisting of a truss within a truss, as shown in figure 2, have been used successfully in rooms 30' wide. (figs 2 & 3) It appears a 6 panel truss could be used in a 40, wide room.

"The Sydvaranger magnetite mine closed in 1996 due to low iron ore prices and was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The magnetite is free of harmful elements and should be attractive on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2% SiO2, which previously was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred because it could be used with sea water. The use of amine is now restricted by the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency. Therefore, testwork to replace cationic with anionic flotation was done. Activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by research from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under laboratory conditions. The old research results have been followed up in order to make a commercial process for Sydvaranger. Calcium activation works excellently with all Sydvaranger ores, including the ones containing amphibole minerals, but Ca activation requires the high and not environmentally friendly pH of 12.4. Magnesium activation at pH 10.5 is a little more challenging, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+ is about 100 times lower than that of CaOH+. Fortunately, the major impurity in the main Bjornevatn orebody is quartz, which responds well to Mg activation. The process does not appear to depend much upon water quality, as the silicates may already be activated during grinding and magnetic separation in recycled water. The new process is environmentally friendly, as only well-known household reagents are used; oleic acid or tall oil, dextrin, sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride at pH 10.5.IntroductionThe processing plant of Sydvaranger Gruve AS (SVG) is located in the port town of Kirkenes in the northernmost part of Norway, 10 km by rail from the high-grade deposit of Bjornevatn. This plant has been able to beneficiate magnetite ore to up to 99.5% purity, as described by Sandvik and Malvik (2001). Using the magnetic properties of the ore and making the most out of its enviable liberation characteristics, the original plant consisted of ball mills and 600-mm magnetic separators. The plant was shut down due to market conditions in 1996 but reopened in 2009."

In 1994 Western Mine Engineering, Inc., (WME), which is now InfoMine USA, Inc., set out to build a suite of stand-alone software programs that would provide their clients the means to estimate the costs of developing and operating mineral exploitation projects. After the first program (Sherpa for Surface Mines) was completed and launched, the developer (me) left WME to form Aventurine Engineering, Inc., in order to complete the series of applications. In the years since, four programs have either been developed or upgraded and enhanced. Applications were produced that estimate the costs of underground mining, placer mining, and project site reclamation. In addition, an application specifically designed to evaluate the economics of these projects, which was based upon a program previously developed for WME by Bill Willoughby of Willoughby & Associates, was redesigned and the code updated to a MicroSoft compatible platform. All these programs follow an engineering-based approach to cost estimating. Instead of relying on rules-of-thumb and statistical averages, they calculate all of the engineering and operational parameters needed to estimate costs. The premise is that the uncertainty associated with cost estimates should lie with the data available for the resource, not the approaches used to design and estimate the associated design parameters. In other words, it is acceptable that items such as the resource grades, deposit dimensions, ore and wall rock characteristics, and mill recovery rates carry with them some uncertainty, but parameters such as loader bucket capacities, truck speeds, pump horsepowers, hoist velocities, and grinding mill diameters can be calculated (although uncertain data might be used in those calculations). No additional uncertainties should be introduced because the cost-estimating procedure relied upon statistical manipulation or anecdotal inaccuracies. To that end, the programs rely upon calculation-based approaches to selecting and sizing machinery, assigning the required workforce, and determining the extent of the consumables needed to recover mineralized material at a rate defined by the client. And while calculation-based software is not unusual, more modern approaches work toward the development, accumulation, and manipulation of data. INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PROJECT GOALS In 2016 we had five separate programs completely disconnected from one another. Each was written in VisualBasic, a language that was falling from favor. In essence, the status in 2016 was a series of stand-alone programs (Figure 1) in which results from one needed to be manually entered as input into another.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. "While wearable technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply wearable technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry.This article discusses the value proposition of using wearable technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to wearable technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear, the first wearable technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on his or her primary task and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: timecritical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some human-computer interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the interruption, reaction and comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (Fig. 1)."

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

"So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

A coal-fired fluidized bed steam generator rated at 12.6 kg/s has demonstrated the industrial and institutional application of fluidized bed combustion by burning high sulfur coal in an environmentally acceptable manner within a populated area. Designed to provide steam for heating and cooling, the unit was placed into service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and has already logged 5275 hours.* The unit has consistently operated well within Washington's strict regulations governing emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulates. The Georgetown program, cofunded by the university and the US Department of Energy, has shown that fluidized bed combustion is a promising way to realize the full potential of coal, the nation's most abundant energy resource. In a fluidized bed steam generator, a layer of granular limestone is placed on top of a grid designed to prevent particles from falling through. Air is passed upward through the bed with sufficient force to lift and float the particles. At this point the bed material resembles a boiling liquid. Crushed coal is then introduced into the bed and ignited. When high sulfur coal is burned, limestone absorbs the SO2 produced. The operating temperature of a fluidized bed steam generator is relatively low (approximately 871°C). As a result, NO, formation is minimal. Another potential problem encountered in burning coal is fly ash, a form of particulate. A feature of the fluidized bed design, developed by Foster Wheeler Energy Corp., is a fly ash reinjection system. Fly ash is reintroduced into the bed where it is burned again, thereby enhancing fuel efficiency. Nearly all remaining fly ash is captured by a baghouse dust collector. At Georgetown, the fluidized bed steam generator and all auxiliary equipment are enclosed in a structure aesthetically compatible with the surrounding university complex. The steam generator has two separate beds that can be fired independently, and operation to date has been with one and two beds in service, based on steam load demand. During several operating periods, when the fluidized bed unit was the only boiler in service, it supplied all the steam required by the 18.5 hm2 of buildings on campus. Initially fired with low sulfur coal, the unit was quickly switched over to higher sulfur fuel which will be used most of the time.

Introduction Mine operators are interested in energy conversation in two ways. With our finite sources of energy, we are concerned for future generations. In addition, as mine operators, we want to minimize energy costs. Moving material represents a substantial amount of the energy used in mining operations. Wheeled vehicles are used extensively to move materials. And they derive all their energy from fuel. Energy is also required to overcome the vehicle's inertia, and internal and external frictional forces. Included in the vehicle's frictional forces is its suspension. Tires are an important part of this suspension. What influence do tires have on the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle? Does tire construction affect this influence? As far back as 1896, it was apparent that tires were a factor in fuel consumption. A test was devised in France using a coal-fueled steam-driven auto. The test measured whether there was any fuel savings with the new pneumatic tires rather than of the then commonly used solid tires. The result was a 28% savings in water and a 29% savings in coal on pneumatic tires. Today, the pneumatic tire is accepted, but there are differences in present constructions. Tire Construction: Bias vs Radial There are basically two types of tire construction, bias and radial. Bias tires have been around for about 60 years. Radial tires are more recent. They were developed to improve a tire's ability to withstand higher speeds and loads, as well as to improve tire life and vehicle handling. Another advantage of the radial tire is its lower rolling resistance. This characteristic results in lower fuel use by a vehicle. This has been demonstrated with passenger cars and over-the-road trucks. It is now being demonstrated with earthmoving equipment. A basic description of both types of tire construction should now be reviewed: The casing of a bias-ply tire is made up of crisscrossed textile plies or layers. The cords of these plies run on a bias, from bead to bead. The cords of each ply run on an angle relative to the cords of the adjacent plies. As the tire rolls and deflects, the angle between the cords changes, like the blades on scissors (Fig. 1). The cords of one ply pull one way, and the adjacent ply pulls another, straining each other. With the growing urban population and the concern for traffic congestion and pollution (emissions control), public transportation is becoming more and more attractive to both city dwellers and managers. To gain access to the central area of the city, the sub- way remains the most viable alternative, despite its higher cost when compared to above ground or elevated transportation systems. There are relatively few regulations and criteria for subway ventilation, particularly when compared with mine ventilation. The main document that provides guidance and general recommendations for subway ventilation and environmental control is the Sub- way Environmental Design Handbook, published in 1976 (2nd edition) by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Re- search and Development. Many of the subway systems in existence today have been designed and built with ventilation features adequate for normal train operation, but their design does not consider stringent criteria for such emergency conditions as a train fire in a tunnel. The National Fire Protection Association's Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit Systems known as NFPA 130 as well as the ASHRAE Handbook - HVAC Applications (1995) provide specific design and operation requirements for subway ventilation systems. Some of the existing, old subways are upgrading their ventilation systems to comply with the new regulations. The ability of a particular ventilation system design to provide adequate ventilation during normal and emergency conditions can be evaluated using computer modeling and simulation techniques. A train fire will cause a sudden change in the tunnel ventilation pattern by adding an unsteady and fast-growing source of heat. The hot air and gasses created by a fire will tend to flow uphill, possibly against the normal flow, producing a 'backlayering effect." To prevent this effect from happening, enough ventilation must be provided and the governing criterion to establish the required airflow is called 'Critical Velocity." Several software packages are available for special applications on tunnel and station ventilation as well as to model the spread of smoke and heat in case of a major tunnel fire, using Computational Fluid Dynamics. This paper presents the current issues in subway ventilation, as shared by the public transit community around the world, together with modern alternative design concepts vis-à-vis the more stringent emerging Fire-Life Safety criteria. Examples of recent studies and ventilation systems design are provided.

"Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. In this paper, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models under atmospheric pressure phase, it has a reference value to the study of characteristics and models to single component gas."
