Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. Flocculation, the process of coagulation or coalescence of finely divided particles, is commonly used in separating fine solids from fluids. Forces disposing of the particles to flocculate include: ionic forces of attraction, secondary entropic forces, and magnetism. Magnetic flocculation is due to a physical magnetizing process which affects suspended ferromagnetic particles. Such particles, after exposure to magnetic fields strong enough to cause reorientation of the particles and alignment of the induced magnetic poles, tend strongly to retain this induced magnetism, as the magnetic retentivity of ferromagnetic particles is a linear function of its specific surface.1 Thus, because they become small magnets with high residual magnetism, the particles become and remain attracted to one another, forming large agglomerates. Fine magnetic particles close to domain size can exhibit energies of the magnetization of the order of 105 ergs/cm3,2 which is many times greater than the energy affected by chemical flocculents. Therefore magnetic flocculation can be used to agglomerate particles having surfaces ionized with like charges and only a minute quantity of ferromagnetic material will be necessary to develop sufficient force to overcome the repulsive ionic forces and hold together relatively large masses of fine solid agglomerates suspended in fluids. Since flocculation occurs after the fine suspension passes through a magnetic field generated by magnets surrounding a pipe section, the simplicity of the process and economic advantage makes magnetic flocculation very attractive.

VITROKELER cyanide recovery technology has been successfully piloted at the Gabanintha and Cosmo-Howley mines by Nedpac Engineering Pty. Ltd. The pilot campaigns were designed to confirm technical and economic feasibility of the recovery process including the production of base metal concentrates and return of re-useable cyanide to the leach circuit. The capital and operating costs of full-scale plants is now able to be estimated to within ±20% on the basis of hydrometallurgical data. Firm quotes are subject to on-site test-work, and any special requirements or site peculiarities.

The industrial diamond review arrived too late for the June issue. Since the economy is showing a resurgence of strength, diamond tool consumption is similarly on the rise. Tool makers indicate that sales are picking up. They expect that 1994 will see about an 8% increase. Fabricators expect this positive trend to continue through 1995. In the industrial sector, sales of grinding wheels, honing stones, cutting tools and the like are expected to grow 5% and 8% during the next year. Users still are buying only those products necessary for "just-in-time" production cycles.

On account of geological characteristics, Brazil is a country of large deposits of high quality kaolin, with the larger ones being located in its northern region. In the last years, kaolin beneficiation and production area is receiving great investments, aiming at a high quality kaolin production to be used in the paper industry, mainly intended for the foreign market. After the conclusion of expan- sion programs and with the advent of new production areas, Brazil is very soon expected to come in second place in the kaolin world production ranking.

The mining methods used at many opencast brown coal mines in Poland and the German Democratic Republic are not used in the US to any extent. Using bucketwheel excavators, bucket chain excavators, and mobile conveyor bridges, the mining techniques may offer efficient, economic alternatives for operators in the US. These mining methods were observed during visits to several open-cast brown coal mines in Eastern Europe over the past two years. Some of them may be particularly attractive for the large lignite mines being planned in North Dakota and Texas.

Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pre- treatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulphides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on the pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on the pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

The properties of activated carbon which are important for gold recovery applications include activity, capacity, wear resistance, particle size distribution and bulk density. There are experimental difficulties in attempting to simulate the plant environment in the laboratory in order to measure the above properties. However, standard tests can be set up to compare the characteristics of different carbons and to assist in monitoring the performance of carbon in CIP operations. These laboratory tests are critically evaluated and data are presented on the performance of carbon from a number of CIP plants.

The results of flotation of a primary desliming hydrosizer overflow material containing 14.6 wt.% P20, and 3.6 wt.% MgO are presented. The phosphate minerals were collophane and francolite and all minerals appeared to be liberated. The material had not been previously treated with flotation reagents. In the experimentation, various collectors were evaluated for effectiveness. The relative effectiveness of flotation in different flotation devices was determined. Finally a two-stage flotation scheme is proposed using column flotation of dolomite in the first stage and Denver cell flotation in the second.

The paper makes a systematic analysis of interaction between backfill and pillar in coal mining. It compares the difference of pillar strength with backfill and without backfill. It is proved that there are the obvious improvements in pillar strength and the decrease in subsidence. It discusses the subsidence effects of different extraction ratio, different backfill ratio, and different elastic modulus ratio in details. The paper analyses the sensitivity by orthogonal test method. At last, author proposes some suggestion to increase pillar strength, to reduce subsidence, and to guide engineering practices.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center surveyed MSHA Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts to monitor the implementation of computer based atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) in underground coal mines. This survey was first completed in 1984, and has been periodically updated with the latest update completed in 1995. The utilization of computer based monitoring systems has steadily increased over the past 12 years, with over 16 percent of all producing underground coal mines using this technology in 1995. This paper discusses the results of the MSHA 1995 AMS Survey.

This paper is a case history of a subsurface exploration program conducted for a system of sewer tunnels in upstate New York. The focus of the discussion is a non-technical outline of how the exploration process was organized to efficiently produce a large body of geological and geotechnical data. A brief description of the project and geological setting is provided, the scope of the exploration program is summarized, the logistics of collecting, processing and reporting subsurface data is outlined, and recommendations for management of explorations applicable to any rock tunnel are provided.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

An approach for scheduling the mining of ore and waste blocks in a surface mine is presented. While mathematical programming approaches have been developed to solve this problem optimally, they are difficult to implement and understand. The more simplistic approach presented here achieves practical mining schedules, taking into account both long- and short-term considerations. The key to the approach is use of the concept of ranked positional grade. The program can determine a complete schedule for a specified time period, or it can be used interactively as a guiding tool for the engineer.

The Henderson mine is a large continuous panel caving operation in central Colorado. The orebody is roughly 760 m by 910 m and will be extracted from two production levels. Each level is divided into three north - south panels 244 m to 317 m wide. The general arrangement of a production level and its associated undercut drifts is shown in Figure 1. The production drifts (3.6 m by 3.7 m) are spaced 24 m apart center to center and have undercut drifts (3.4 m by 3.8 m) 17 m directly above them. The production drifts are interconnected with drawpoint crosscuts (4 m by 4.3 m) driven on 12 m centers. Drawpoint crosscuts receive substantial brow steel and concrete support prior to undercutting. The brow steel is a 15 cm by 46 cm wide flange beam with a 2.5 cm wear plate to box in the 'cave' side of the beam. The concrete is a minimum of 0.3 m thick and the batch design results in 27 500 kPa strength. The finished drawpoint opening is 3.7 m by 3.2 m with a choke area of 3.7 m by 2.4 m. (Figure la) Undercutting and bell formation is accomplished by blasting rings of 7.6 cm holes drilled from the undercut drifts. The rings have a burden of 2.0 m and six rings develop one complete bell.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

The paper contains knowledge that have been achieved when the problem of airflow temperature and humidity changes prediction in mine airways was investigated. The substance of physical processes has been consistently applied. The methods of dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures calculations can be applied in any type of mine airway. The exceptionality of auxiliary ventilated airways is in the original solution of so called losing air flowing when a ventilation pipe is leaky. The combination of aerodynamics and thermodynamics solutions enable to determine climatic conditions on projected workplaces with a sufficient accuracy.

Before the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, coal policies-especially coal research policies-were geared to find a solution to the sulfur emission problem. However, technologies to reduce sulfur emissions cannot be tailored for a single coal. A technology that will clean Illinois coal to compliance levels will do the same, or nearly the same, for most other types of coal. This paper will discuss an integrated approach to the analysis of the future of coals from different regions in the United States and its implications for coal-related policies by government and industry.
