IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

Introduction Mining operations require maps for each phase of project development. Engineering plans, cross-sections, and isometric drawings are also needed. Maps are used for geologic interpretation, reserve estimation, permitting, property acquisition, site studies, development work, and production. Maps and drawings are essential to mining. They provide needed information. Generating these products, however, requires many manhours. The filing and organization of maps and drawings is cumbersome, due to their size. Major map changes can necessitate the production of entirely new documents and, thus, additional manhours. The volume of maps and drawings generated in the life of a single project can be extensive. For example, some utility companies have data bases containing more than a million individual maps (one reported eight million). These problems were considered necessary evils in the past. Now, with the automation of map and drawing production, improvements can be realized. Computer-aided mapping and design offers a new approach for the production, management, and storage of drawings and maps. This approach promises benefits in time management, productivity, efficiency, and flexibility. In all economic projects, the bottom line is cost reduction. And implementing computer-based mapping and design techniques can lower costs and increase project profitability. AM/FM/CAD/CAM Automated Mapping/Facility Management (AM/FM) and Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) are becoming buzz words in the engineering world. Most relevant to mining are the concepts of AM and CAD. These terms relate to the application of computers, specifically computer graphic technology, to mapping and design. CAD refers primarily to the design of components and structures in two and three dimensions. But it can apply to the three dimensional modeling of mine workings, ore bodies, and geologic structures AM refers to the automation of conventional map production. AM/CAD systems use computers to store, manipulate, produce, and update drawings and maps in two and three dimensions. Ideally, the calculating capabilities of computers are also used in conjunction with design and drawing generation, offering capabilities not available with conventional, manual mapping and design processes. To better understand concepts associated with AM and CAD applications, the understanding of a few computer-related terms is necessary. Table 1 explains some of these terms. System Features The capabilities of AM/CAD systems are based on viewing transformations. These are the basic, manipulative tools by which AM/CAD packages generate visual representations of data. Examples include the rotation of a three-dimensional object through space, the expansion or contraction of maps to fit a given scale, enlargements of small areas on maps or drawings for detailed viewing, and the generation of cross-sections from three dimensional data. Crude oil, as a central commercial commodity, is tied to major economic activities in all nations. Also its price fluctuation plays a significant role in global political and economic situation, as a change in the price invariably affects the cost of other goods and services. Therefore reliable forecasts of the price of oil are interest for a wide range of applications. Several approaches have been proposed over the past few years. These may divide into three categories; artificial intelligent, statistical techniques and hybrid methods. The neuro-fuzzy is one of the sub divisions of hybrid method, containing neural network and fuzzy techniques. In this paper a novel forecasting model based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference (ANFIS) is proposed to predict monthly crude oil price. To be able to train and test the model, the statistical data from 1990 to 2010, was obtained from West Texas Intermediate oil prices. The results are compared with a multi criteria regression analysis, it is demonstrated that the neuro-fuzzy lead an accurate and more promising forecast.

The role of oxygen in cyanide leaching ia well understood in the gold industry. Oxygen enrichment has taken on a real, practical meaning to operators with the were to evaluate the effect of oxygen enrichment on the kinetics of heap leaching gold ores, to examine methods of oxygen application in the heap, and to develop preliminary economics for the process. Several series of column tests were completed increasing preaeration, applications. use of pure oxygen for leaching, and in CIL in the test program. Oxygen enrichment may have a significant place in heap leaching as well. In preliminary column tests sponsored by Kamyr at Hazen Research, Inc. , oxygen-purged columns showed an increase in both the leaching rate and maximum recovery of gold and a reduction in cyanide consumption compared to columns run with air. Potential benefits of using oxygen in heap leaching include faster leaching kinetics, shorter cycle time, higher recoveries, and more efficient use of permanent or reusable pad space. The concept requires confirmation of technical and economic feasibility on a commercial scale.

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

The objective of this research study was the investigation of heavy metal removal from wastewaters of the "SARAKA" stream by using low-cost materials. These wastewaters flow into Krivelj River and through the network of existing rivers into regional water reservoirs. Sawdust, cardboard and fly ash were used as reactive materials in laboratory studies. Sawdust was obtained from oak and fir-wood while fly ash from heating station Bor, bitter-oak and oak. Experiments were carried out using real Saraka stream wastewaters and the degree of removal for iron, copper, manganese and zinc was investigated. The content of these heavy metals in Saraka stream wastewaters was under the limit of III and IV class of water (Law on Water - Official Register of the Republic of Serbia). Parameters such as flow rate of water, pH and effluent volume, contact time between water and reactive material, etc, were monitored during the experiments. All used materials give satisfactory results for iron and other heavy metals removal; the highest degree of removal was obtained by using fly ash.

When an economic mineral deposit is first discovered, it is almost immediately defined in terms of tonnage and grade. As exploration and assessment continue, the initial definition is ordinarily qualified by such terms as "proven," "probable" and so on. Even at this stage, the fundamental philosophies of the discoverers may manifest themselves in conservative or optimistic views of the deposit's potential. It is unusual, however, for the philosophies to be expressed in terms of metallurgical performance criteria at such an early stage unless the ore is very unusual in its chemistry or mineralogy. Even before drilling is completed, the first mining plans appear, with or without the benefit of metallurgical test data. This is the point at which management philosophies can have some of their greatest impacts. In ideal cases, where large, uniform ore bodies can be developed and mined according to assay cutoffs, the conventional philosophy of maximizing tonnage while minimizing cost can be followed without much metallurgical difficulty. Coal mines in the United States are the most productive in the world in terms of efficient labor employment. This is because of an abundance of workable coal beds, large infusions of capital, improved management practices and continuing competitive pressures. The standard unit of measurement for labor productivity is expressed as tons/manshift, although for underground mines, operators often refer to tons per machineshift. Articles written concerning labor productivity generally focus on measurement techniques, safety considerations, application of technology and training. This article will illustrate by example the impact of labor efficiency (or inefficiency) on the ultimate selling price of coal, f.o.b. mine site. During the past several years, the coal industry has seen significant improvement in labor use. Figure 1 shows the trends in productivity for all active mines in the United States from 1985 through 1994. Productivity in 1985 was 20.1 t/manshift (22.1 st/ manshift). This factor has increased almost linearly throughout that period to 37.5 t/manshift (41.2 st/manshift). This is a 7.2% annual compound growth rate.

INTRODUCTION Various methods for sampling placer deposits have been mentioned by Wojcik in Chapter 2. Here, a brief description and comparison of these methods will be given as related to bulk versus drill sampling. The advantages and disadvantages inherent to each will also be given. The means of sampling can be grouped into bulk or drill samples. As a generality, drill samples over a five-foot length will run from I/,, to 1 /, cubic yard, depending on the diameter of the drive shoe on the drill casing. Bulk samples can be expected to be in the range from one to many cubic yards each. SAMPLE METHODS Bulk Bulldozer-dug trenches and dozer or front-end loader pits are two methods to excavate large bulk samples. Smaller bulk samples can be obtained by digging small dimension shafts through the deposit, by hand or caisson-like drills. It is not recommended to split samples by alternate bucket-loads or by other means, as the effect of a nugget falling into one or the other fraction will seriously alter the sample.

During iron ore pellet production, bentonite clay is used as a binder. Typical pellet plants spend from $3 million to $5 million annually for the clay. If bentonite dosages could be reduced by using it more efficiently, a significant cost savings would result. If the binding mechanisms can be completely understood, procedures can be developed to use bentonite more efficiently. Classical bentonite bonding theory is based on the behavior of bentonite at low percent solids and high mixing shear rates. Under these conditions, bentonite was understood to expand, disperse into platelets, and dry into a bonding "film" or "gel." However, these are not the conditions that exist during pelletization, which is carried out at high percent solids and relatively low shear rates. In this paper SEM imaging was used to identify and explain the bonding mechanisms of bentonite on the surface of magnetite concentrate. It was determined that bentonite would form a fibrous network under the proper conditions and that the formation of these fibers corresponded with an increase in the bonding of particles by the bentonite.

Comminution is a unit operation which consumes major part of energy in mineral processing industries such as fertilizer production. Ball mills are widely used for size reduction of a given ore to the liberation size that is required in further beneficiation processes. In grinding of materials much effort is concentrated on control of top size of the product and this results in production of fines, also creates secondary problems of pollution due to the difficulty in the collection of fine particles. The present work has been carried out to control product size distribution for rock phosphate grinding in an Industrial Ball Mill of 600 TPD. The plant data are taken for a given feed distribution and mill operating conditions. The information at various Ball Size distributions are collected. The comminution functions such as specific rate of breakage and breakage distribution functions are estimated by back calculation technique to solve the mass balance equation. A simulation program is written to study the product size distribution obtained for various ball size distribution.

The West Leg Interceptor is part of a new sanitary sewer system in the southwest suburbs of Cleveland. The first two construction contracts were excavated in glacial soils varying from hard tills to pressurized silts and flowing sands. These soil and groundwater conditions were locally problematic during shaft and tunnel excavations and final lining construction. A variety of solutions were developed primarily during construction. During the WLI-1R Contract, subgrade pressures, continued ground losses, and displacements necessitated extra eductor wells and modified inverts for stabilization of shafts. At the WLI-2Contract, one shaft excavation in similar ground required only one extra well. In the WLI-1R tunnel, localized inflows of groundwater, silt, and sand through the geotextile fabric were stopped by cement grouting. In one WLI-2 connector tunnel, damage to the TBM flood doors combined with wet, flowing silt and sand led to ground losses, surface settlements, plugging, patching, and chemical grouting. The concrete lining in the main WLI-2 tunnel required remedial work to improve watertightness at joints.

A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.

Estimating the power draw of a ball mill is of great importance from both operational and control standpoints. There are many factors that affect the power draw, and its prediction is particularly difficult in an operating plant. The important factors that affect power draw are the mill dimensions and operating parameters. Although mill dimensions remain the same for any given mill, the operational factors, such as ball load, mill filling and mill speed, may vary. This makes the modeling effort extremely cumbersome. It is for this reason that an artificial neural network is considered for the development of a black-box-type model to predict power draw. In this work, a total of 48 sets of plant data are used. Using these data, a neural network is built and trained. The trained network is used to predict power that is found to be in good agreement with operating mill power for many situations. In addition, the results of simulations are also com- pared to those obtained from a discrete-element method- based power-draw model.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method was, as is well known, developed from conventional rock tunnelling. In Germany about 10 years ago the NATM began to be applied to partially stable soils by incorporated excavation and support methods to allow its use with these soils. The advantages of this tunnelling technique - adaptability, ecomomy, and quality have resulted in its widespread usage. Today, about 85 % of all mined tunnels in Germany are produced with this technology. This rapid development has resulted in about 40 companies operating within a geographical area about the same size as the state of Illinois that are capable of utilizing the NATM. In most cases German contract/award procedures allow the contractor to develop alternate design and plans. As a result of this flexibility and intense competition, safety factors have been gradually reduced to the lower limit of what could be regarded as demonstrably safe, and the utilization of the NATM has expanded to include higher risk conditions, namely * excavating larger cross sections. * working with less overburden. * work undertaken under less stable soil conditions.

In the early days of minimal environmental protection awareness and unreasoning economy development pressures, little attention was paid to growing environmental concerns in Fuxin colliery, especially the air pollution problem due to the long term mining activities. In order to determine air quality concentration levels, a new technique for synthetic assessment of ambient air quality by using the extension of matter-element method is proposed in this paper. The air pollutants data such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Total Suspended Particulates (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10), and dustfall collected at four different air quality monitoring stations located in four districts of Fuxin colliery is used. The results obtained indicate that TSP, PM10, dustfall and SO2 are the predominant pollutants. Other pollutants such as CO and NOx are also detected in Fuxin colliery. The air pollution comes mainly from industrial emissions, mining activities and the abandoned gangue stockpiles. Compared to those applied to other mathematical assessment methods, it is demonstrated that the extension of matter-element model is quite appropriate for air quality assessment.

Column flotation testing was conducted on the flotation feed slurry obtained from a preparation plant located in the Southern Illinois coal basin. The column flotation tests were conducted using three different bubble generating devices: a static sparger, a gas saver and a foam jet. Each of these devices was tested with three different types of frother and various column operating variables to provide maximum combustible recovery, minimum product ash and maximum pyrite rejection. The results show that column flotation provided improved flotation performance, in terms of combustible recovery as well as ash and pyrite rejection, for each of the bubble generating devices. However, the effectiveness of each bubble generating device was dependent on the type of frother used. Alcohol frothers were most effective for use with the static sparger, somewhat less effective for the foam jet and ineffective for the gas saver. Glycol frothers were effective for all three bubble generating systems, providing high combustible recovery (>90%); low clean-coal ash (4-6% ash) and high pyrite rejection (70-80%).
