Peru is a mineral hot spot in the world today. Newmont is in the exploratory phase of this mining cycle, a phase full of optimism and expectations. But exploration is high risk. There will be successes but also failures. Many foreign companies will come and go. But it is the responsibility of the mining industry leadership of Peru and the government to continue to foster an environment conducive to investment. This is the time of year companies begin planning their next annual report. Last year, Newmont’s was called “new horizons.” It highlighted the company’s global expansion into Peru, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Now, projects that were only on the horizon a year ago are moving into production. So “turning opportunity into gold” may be this year’s theme.

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) offer capacity increases, savings in operating costs and metallurgical advantages. The first installation of the Polycom HPGR in a copper ore treatment plant occurred in July 1995 at Cyprus Sierrita’s mining complex near Green Valley, AZ (Fig. 1). Until that time, the benefits this technology offers for copper and gold ore were only demonstrated on testwork. In other industries, such as diamonds, HPGR have proven to be reliable in industrial-scale plants and have set a new standard for this kind of ore treatment plant. HPGR are also successfully used for the comminution of coal, blast furnace slag and in cement and pelletizing plants. The installation at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine should prove the economical benefits in commerical-scale copper mining, confirming the results of comprehensive testwork(Fig. 2).

1 Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Let me first thank you for welcoming me to this international congress. I?ll have the pleasure to explain to you how the Lafarge group works on its quarry rehabilitation. I will deal with the way quarry rehabilitation has affected all branches of the group trough a global approach. 2 Quarries often are a subject of controversy dividing those are for and those who are against. My purpose is rather to examine where factors of progress lay and how in a quarry such as Lafarge we can include quarry rehabilitation, which is so fundamental dimension of our process. 3 - 4 As these two photos of French quarry show taking into account the environment in the quarry industry has been a recent preoccupation. In less than a century rehabilitation has a dramatically evolved in a positive way. Consequently our group integrate an ecological dimension in its activity. It?s an ethical question as well as a personal view of our role as a responsible industrial group. 5 My presentation is built around 4 points: I?ll begin by explaining why it?s our responsibility to rehabilitate quarries. I?ll go on to fill you in on the method of the project. After that I?ll outline the expected results. Finally I?ll talk about the rest of the project and the way we can ensure this know how.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. It appears that the competition for increasingly scarce international mining investment capital will continue among developing countries. Indeed, there is growing evidence this competition may be on the verge of becoming destructive and cutthroat in nature. While this may be viewed as good news by short-term, speculative investors, it could have dangerous repercussions for international minerals producers over the long-term. It seems there has been a continuous parade of traveling foreign delegations touting the virtues of mineral investment in one country or another. These pitches all contain the politically correct key words, such as macro-economic reform, political reform, privatization, liberalization of laws governing mining and related investment incentives, reconciliation of ownership and right-to mine issues, and tax reform specially tailored for the minerals sector. Unfortunately, some of the information being trumpeted is based on plans, concepts or hopes for change rather than actual reforms approved by all necessary governmental entities. In yet other situations, the information provided consists of half-truths at best. Too often, potential minerals investors, faced with metals and minerals prices hovering near their recession lows and the need to offset old, high-cost operations, desperately want to believe all they hear about investment alternatives cast in a near-utopian setting. However, the virtues being proffered for mining investment abroad do not eliminate the need for careful scrutiny of subtle variations of traditional risks associated with foreign investment that can drastically affect the economic viability of mining projects.

Work related pulmonary diseases are in the top TEN causes of occupational disability and death in the United States. Likewise, it also ranks high inmost of the other industrial countries. It is difficult to know the true occurrence of occupational lung disease because of poor documentation. This is especially true when one examines workers’ compensation claims. Most frequently, silica and asbestos are paramount in our discussion of work related pulmonary disease. Little consideration is given to other “dust-related” diseases, irritant reactions, reactive airway responses, and hypersensitivity reactions. The major classification of occupational lung diseases will be discussed. This includes both acute and chronic disease that arises in the work place, especially, the mining industry. It’s more important to make an accurate evaluation and diagnosis for the prevention of disease among other workers.

Intensive hydrologic monitoring of the Powder river basin has been on-going since the early 1970's. Data were used in environ- mental assessments and for determination of hydrologic consequences associated with coal mining activities. For most coal mine operators, data collection has continued in this baseline mode with little or no statistical analysis of the data and with no statistical procedure established to detect changes in groundwater quality. For the past four years Powder River Coal Company has studied several statistical techniques to analyze groundwater quality. Three objectives were pursued: 1) to determine the baseline water quality for key aquifers; 2) to determine which wells could be deleted from the monitoring program without reducing monitoring effectiveness; and 3) to define a statistical test to determine water quality changes. Knowledge of the regional geo-hydrologic system was combined with an analysis of the water quality monitoring in order to identify homogeneous aquifer zones. All wells within an aquifer zone were treated as one population, and a t-test was used to determine the minimum number of samples needed to define the water quality for each aquifer zone. Results indicate that the data for each aquifer zone were nor- mally distributed and that groundwater quality could be defined using a fairly small number of samples. Because of the minimum sample size test, groundwater quality sampling was reduced by between 75 and 85 percent.

During the last years many new concepts have been presented for magnetic separation of feebly magnetic minerals by using the new high-duty permanent magnetic material especially in Open Gradient Magnet Systems (OGMS). In this respect KHD Humboldt Wedag AG developed an improved version of a drum-type magnetic separator called PERMOS® with a special magnetic field configuration for the NdFeB permanent magnets, which gives a magnetic field strength of at least 0.7 Tesla and a wide working zone outside the drum. The magnet system within the PERMOS® unit is no longer made of relatively large magnet blocks of alternating radial magnetisation; the system is now made up of a multitude of small NdFeB bars with a specially oriented magnetisation. This PERMOS® Open Gradient Magnetic Separator can be used for dry magnetic separations in "top-feed" and 'free-fall" feed configuration as well as in the conventional wet "drum-type" feed mode. It allows high throughput rates of up to 40 metric tons of solids per hour and meter of drum length without any clogging problems, even when strongly magnetic com-pounds are present in the feed material. The important design features and the actual machine characteristics of the improved PERMOS® units for dry and wet magnetic separation are described and typical examples for their commercial application for industrial minerals and for martitic iron ores are presented.

INTRODUCTION The process of predicting ground condition with exactitude and of ascertaining appropriate ground control measures is pertinent to each and every excavation. The control and support of soil and/ or rock during and subsequent to excavation is essential in order to overcome or avoid excessive movement, maintain stability or preserve integrity of the excavation, handle or prevent excessive water intrusion or hydrostatic pressure build up, and produce an excavation that is safe and suitable for its intended purpose. The design of support systems has primarily been, until recently, based upon experience and empirical or semiempirical guidelines, which do not lend themselves to thorough analytical calculations giving rise to the desired degree of confidence in design of such systems and consequently, several, if not a majority of support systems, no doubt, are overdesigned. The primary objective of this paper is, therefore, to briefly outline engineering considerations leading towards the design of ground control systems for near vertical excavations extending to shallow depths in metamorphic rock formations. Several engineering considerations including the selection of temporary support systems, technical aspects of design, and the sequence as well as details of construction, are briefly outlined. During the past decade, international mining companies have descended on South America. Countries like Chile, Brazil and Peru have seen billions of dollars in exploration and development funding turn their once meager mineral industries into mining giants that have become the envy of the world. Part of this outpouring of foreign investment in those countries has been because each has privatized its state-owned mining companies and has liberalized its foreign investment laws. In addition, they have rewritten their mining codes to encourage minerals development and passed new tax laws that have made natural resource development more attractive. Now these same international mining companies are turning their attention to Argentina. This a country that, like Chile, Brazil and Peru, has a wealth of largely un- tapped mineral resources. And Argentina wants its share of the foreign investment that its neighbors have enjoyed. With that in mind, ministers of Argentina's natural resource agencies came to Denver, CO to meet with mining executives and pitch their country's mining industry. The meeting, attended by about 200 people, was sponsored by the US Trade and Development Agency and organized by the World Trade Center Denver. Others involved were the Colorado Mining Association, the Colorado International Trade Office and the Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Mining of Argentina. The following is a summary of a report on Argentina's mining industry. It was prepared by Anderson & Schwab Management Consultants and distributed to attendees as part of the meeting's program.

It has been known for a long time that summing pressure drops and rises due to friction, shock, fans and natural ventilation is incorrect. In fact, lost works and works should be summed. In spite of this, the traditional method of finding a fan/system operating position has been the H/Q Curve. This paper presents (lost) work/m curves, progressing from a single fan moved around the system to include natural ventilation work, and fans in a series, parallel and series/parallel. The solutions obtained graphically are substantiated by dry air thermodynamic solutions, and the traditional solutions are shown to be in error. This method of solving problems is particularly useful when moving fans around the system, and essential in series/parallel and series situations with substantially different fan densities. The dry air analysis is employed because of its simplicity. Real air, with evaporation and condensation, will react somewhat differently, and one should use real densities (i.e.[l + w +w]/va ) when using this method. One source of error when applying this method to real air, although probably not major, will be investigated in a subsequent paper. Friction and shock losses are proportional to the square of the mass rate of flow, leading to the typical parabolic system curve. However, the unbalanced water stuff potential energy term, on a unit mass basis, is substantially independent of the mass rate of flow. It is possible that this could be handled as a negative natural ventilation work.

The conventional magnetic separators used in the mineral industry are equipped with traditional magnetic circuits or with permanent magnets (rare earth). However, when processing minerals with low magnetic susceptibilities or minerals of very small particle size, these separators are inefficient. In addition, a conventional magnetic circuit consumes considerable amounts of electricity to generate a relatively low magnetic field (~2 Tesla). The equipment is also heavy and bulky. Only a separator having a superconducting sole-noid can contribute in solving most of the problems, and only such a separator can produce high magnetic fields with low energy consumption. New developments and the experience acquired in using these superconducting magnets have resulted in new uses for magnetic separation, especially in the environmental area. This paper presents and describes a separation system that uses superconducting magnets that are completely automated and able to treat raw materials (concentration or purification) or liquid industrial effluents containing heavy metals in solution. Several industrial sectors, including the surface treatment, petroleum and chemical industries, are generating effluents containing heavy metal ions. The main metal ions found in such effluents include zinc, copper and vanadium. The purification of such effluents by magnetic separation is performed by adding a certain proportion of iron salts. The treated effluent passes through a superconducting separator where the flocs are retained in a matrix of steel wires. The efficiency of supraconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) by this method exceeds 95%. Mineral separation and industrial-waste purification results are presented.

Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducing bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the pores of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also expanded reserves in a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore occurrences. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of June 1, 1984, a total of 29.87 million mt (29.4 million long tons) of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos River. Duval corporation has produced more than 88 percent of that total.

Prologue Antoine Marc Gaudin (Fig. 1) was truly a giant in the field of mineral processing, and his shadow is still cast long on our profession. "Tony," as his students affectionately called him (but never to his face), came to the United States in 1917 and enrolled at Columbia University where he studied under Professor Arthur F. Taggart. Later, as a lecturer, he wrote his classic comminution paper (Gaudin, 1926). This important work led to his appointment as an associate professor at The University of Utah, where he conducted highly original work on flotation fundamentals that is still widely quoted today (Gaudin et al., 1928-30). In 1929, he was appointed Research Professor of Ore Dressing at the Montana School of Mines in Butte. Shortly thereafter, he published his first book, Flotation (Gaudin, 1932). Because Gaudin could so quickly cut through the fog to get to the essence of a problem, this is still a valuable reference book. It is a valued part of my personal library, and I consult it frequently. Over the next decade, he conducted an outstanding graduate research program at Butte, but, more importantly, he honed his undergraduate lectures and produced the century's outstanding text in the field, Elements of Mineral Dressing (Gaudin, 1939). In underground construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speedup the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high. In this paper, general methods of conducting blasting risk evaluations and outlined and considerations for blast design and risk management are reviewed. This paper also includes three blasting case histories demonstrating how these techniques were used at recent projects. In the first case, a cautious blasting program was developed to facilitate the removal of concrete and rock within a large section of an active mineshaft. The second case involved critical blasting to excavate a dry lake-tap connection between a tunnel and a shaft at the Southern Nevada Water Intake No. 2 project in Henderson, Nevada. The third case history describes how novel blasting methods were used to carefully drop a 2,721,500-kg (6,000,000-lb) concrete caisson into a1.2-m (4-ft) rock socket at the Detroit Outfall No. 2 project in Detroit, MI.

Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink. South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

Open-pit mines in the US and throughout the world are typically characterized by increasing operating costs and decreasing ore grades. Thus, companies must continue to improve their use of human and technological resources to remain competitive in the marketplace. Duval Corp. has historically been very sensitive to mining costs, in part because of relatively low grade copper-molybdenum ore bodies. These concerns have resulted in three haulage system generations at the 218 kt/d (240,000 stpd) Sierrita-Esperanza open-pit mine south of Tucson, AZ. Each generation has exceeded the performance of the one replaced. The latest system of portable crushers and conveyors reduces hauling costs by combining both hardware and technique. Savings are achieved not only bysubstituting conveyors for haul trucks, but also by permitting the crusher-convey or system to closely follow mining as the pit deepens and/or mining areas change location. The Duval system is capable of easy and inexpensive relocation in varying site configurations in relatively short time periods. Its implementation in active mining areas results in minimum disruption to both the mine operation and mine design. This haulage concept allows the mining engineer maximum freedom to design an open pit for profit rather than for equipment. Maximum savings with a portable system are achieved by minimizing truck haulage costs. At Sierrita, for example, the yearly estimated operating cost savings for each thousand feet of +10% truck ramp replaced by conveyors is about $1 million per portable crusher. A savings of $30 million could be achieved fora three-portable system overa 10 year period simply by reducing the average truck Iiftto the crusher by 30 m (100 ft), There is also the added capital expense of buying trucks to cover the additional 30 m (100 ft) of lift. Relocation costs are an important consideration in a portable system. Direct costs can become a significant operating expense if frequent relocations are necessary to take full advantage of potential haulage cost savings. A site preparation cost of $375,000, for example, would add an additional operating cost of 2.8¢/t(2.5¢/st) for a system handling 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy), assuming one move a year, In addition to the direct cost of site preparation, such as installation of retaining walls, apron feeder slots, and equipment pads, there is the cost of site renovation after abandonment. Indirect relocation costs, while less tangible and more dependent on specific mine design and scheduling, can be of significance. A slowdown in the mining rate or a less efficient mining plan can result from a site not being immediately available for mining after abandonment. Conversely, mining in narrow areas can be adversely affected if two or three month lead times are required for site preparation.

A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor.
