The improvement of grinding circuit efficiency is a constant industrial requirement. It has often been connected to the improvement of classification. The paper discusses some operational aspects of hydrocyclone classification. A hydrocyclone should be operated close to roping but should not with high density slurries go to roping. Unfortunately roping is not well understood and roping models for controlling hydrocyclone operation are not adequate. The paper discusses also some ways of improving the classification in terms of bypass and imperfection. The last part of the paper discusses the effect of bypass and imperfection on circuit performance.

The introduction of recent advances in molecular biology into the field of microbial ecology has made available a powerful set of analytical tools for dissecting the structure of microbial communities in natural environments. The use of these approaches, many of them based on DNA-DNA hybridization enables the researcher to assess the occurrence of specific DNA sequences among the natural bacterial flora (Ford and Olson 1987). These techniques promise to have wide application as tools for monitoring the spread of introduced microorganisms (Trevors, 198'): Ford and Olson. 1987) and have been used to examine the response of bacterial communities to environmental contaminants and stressors (Barkay and Olson. 1986. Olson and Ford. 1986. Olson. Ford and Lester 1987) The occurrence of heavy metal resistance among microorganisms has been discussed as a possible tool for the detection of pathfinder elements employed in mineral exploration (Olson and Barkay 1986). In addition, the occurrence of heavy metal resistant bacteria may be utilized in protocols for assessing the occurrence and biological impact of contamination occurring as a consequence of mining operations. In this context the use of DNA hybridization technology enables the investigator to directly quantify the number of heavy metal resistant bacteria by the use of genetic probes specific for those resistance genes. The implementation of a strategy for detection of heavy metal resistance genes by hybridization technology is dependent on the availability of data on the genetic systems which encode resistance The availability of extensive DNA sequence data on mercury resistance genes (Brown et a11986. Barrineau et al 1984) has lead us to use gene probes specific for mercury resistance within natural bacterial populations as a model system for investigating the response of these bacterial populations to the occurrence of mercury In the environment.

Flotation is a surfaced-based separation process that exploits the differences in the hydrophobicities of the components. In the present paper, a review of both established and emerging nonmineral applications of flotation (oil removal, paper de-inking and separation of plastics) is presented and discussed. For each application, the theory of the process is compared and contrasted with mineral flotation. It is shown that the mass-transfer approach to flotation offers a good starting point for the analysis of these separation processes.

INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC's) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer's Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

Mines in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, are faced with the dilemma of having to introduce longwall mining techniques at a time when increasingly large areas of the surface are being used for urban development. Increasing pressures on safety, costs and productivity performance dictate that longwall mining is the method for the future. Construction of surface structures is controlled by a statutory body known as the Mine Subsidence Board (MSB). All surface structures have to be designed to MSB criteria. All mining plans involving secondary excavation also have to be submitted to the MSB for approval. The Board acts as risk assessor in evaluating acceptable levels of surface subsidence vs. the value of the coal resource. Surface repairs are paid for by a levy on all coal producers.

Numerous magnesite deposits are found in the south part of Khorasan state, east of Iran. During the past few years, production of high-grade magnesite ore was possible only by using selective mining method. The decreases of high-grade ore imply upgrading of the low-grade ore. To do so, the objective for the first phase is to obtain a material which contains less than 2.5% SiO2. The present study was carried out based on three different samples. The results obtained in laboratory indicate that the direct flotation of magnesite by fatty acids led to acceptable result.

The Grenville structural province, a 400 km-wide belt of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which crosses the province of Québec in a northeasterly direction, is the host of several wollastonite occurrences. Most of these are found in marble and calc-silicate rocks enclosed within or located near intrusive bodies. Reconnaissance and detailed mapping of such zones have helped to identify areas of interest for wollastonite exploration. The most important zone is located in the huge Lake Saint-Jean anorthosite massif in the central part of the Grenville. A recent geological mapping project has revealed the presence of wollastonite in metasedimentary faulted remnant of the roof. The main occurrence consists of diopside and wollastonite in a zone at least 3 km long and 150 m wide. Preliminary sampling suggests and average grade of 50 percent wollastonite with an aspect ratio of 151. Other wollastonite deposits occur in the western part of the Grenville, mainly north and west of Montreal, where the Morin anorthositic complex and a large syenite mass intrude the metasedimentary rocks of the Grenville Supergroup. Marble bands with up to 70 percent wollastonite occur locally at the southern margin of the complex or as an inclusion in the syenite. Significant wollastonite occurrences have recently been found in the eastern part of the Grenville. One of them is located in metamorphosed calcareous rocks which are part of the granulite facies Manicouagan metamorphic complex. A representative sample analyzed 54 percent wollastonite. Farther south, an inclusion diopside-wollastonite gneiss containing an estimated 40 percent wollastonite occurs at the margin of the Pentecôte River anorthositic complex.

INTRODUCTION In 1973, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a 10-year program of research on tunneling technology for future highways as a part of a larger Department of Transportation effort on tunnels. The objectives of the FHWA program are to: improve tunnel design technology, reduce costs, minimize adverse environmental impact due to construction, increase the rate of construction, and assure the maintenance of a safe and attractive tunnel environment. The program is divided into four research tasks designed to solve tunneling problems identified by the engineering and field offices of the FHWA. These tasks are as follows: 1. Cut-and-Cover Tunneling 2. Site Investigations 3. Ground Movements - Prediction and Control 4. Highway Environmental Criteria for Tunnels In order to provide input into Tasks 2 and 3, the FHWA is sponsoring an investigation and testing program by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to instrument and monitor two sites in the second bore of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel located on Interstate Highway 70 at Loveland Pass approximately 97 km (60 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The tunnel will be approximately 14.0 m (46 ft) in diameter when excavated. The chapter describes how several OR techniques assisted the planning of a major new UR project. A computer system was developed to analyze reserves distribution and potential of possible underground layouts, to assist in choosing the location and size of access points. Manpower requirements of each proposed working plan were assessed and matched with the potential recruitment of skilled and unskilled labor. Computer simulations were used to determine the optimum capacity for coal preparation plant and surface bunkerage. For the overall assessment of robustness, financial modelling and risk analysis techniques were adapted to the special requirements of new mines.

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

Mining and extraction methods in the copper industry use basic technologies developed over a period of almost 150 years. Paradigm shifts in the industry have been rare, yet human involvement in the activities has changed dramatically. Clearly defined extraction paths have become more blurred as economic considerations broke down the barriers that had encouraged specialization. What had been a labor-intensive industry unfettered by environmental restrictions was forced to change. Better productivity and "cleaner" operations resulted in much higher capital costs on a plant basis. Many of the changes were truly innovative in the same spirit as in the mining revolution of the first decade of the twentieth century. What role will innovation play in the next 20 years as lower-grade, mixed-metal orebodies are exploited in more remote locations?

Polymers of a wide variety of composition are used in coal and mineral beneficiation. Applications include flocculation and coagulation in thickeners, filtration enhancement, mill scale control, dust control, ore leaching improvement, and pond management. The proper chemistry of the polymer is determined by many factors, including the nature of the process, mineral type, and respective performance requirements. This paper provides an overview of the various current applications of polymers in mineral processing, and a description of the applicable polymer chemistries which find utility in these applications. Examples of structure/performance relationships are discussed.

The use of explosives in coal mining inevitably results in oversize, midsize and undersize (fines) products due to fragmentation. The oversize can be broken into smaller sizes by further processing. However, the undersize have a negative affect on the efficiency of a mining operation. Therefore, limiting the amount of fines can be economically crucial. This paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing fines generation in coal mining. Inherent fractures were identified as one of sources of fines generation. This paper is centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs, which are evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

This paper examines the interaction problems of multiple seam mining by combining underground investigation, laboratory testings, and numerical modeling. One case of multiple seam interaction that occurred recently in West Virginia was carefully studied. Causes for the interaction problems were identified and the corresponding mining recommendations were proposed. The principle of pillar columnization and the effect of a remnant pillar on mining operations in the underlying and over- lying seams were also carefully examined. Considerable attention was given to the effect the pillar size, the pillar width, the coal stiffness, the extraction ratio, the degree of inhomogeneity in the interburden, the overburden thickness, the mechanical properties of the interburden rocks, the strata inclination, the interburden thickness, and the in-situ horizontal stresses have on the pillar load transfer mechanism.

Robotics is topical for mining owing to deterioration of miner's safety as a depth of winning, limited functions of traditional mechanization and automation, rise of miner's labor cost. Mining robot is an autonomous mining machine with a free programmable control that provides a multifunctional use of working head. After analysis of world publications the database “Technological applications of robotics in mining" has been built. In most cases robots are suggested for imitation of miner's motions. The following shapes of robotics had been classified for mining: technological robot as a flexible controlled mining machine, remote manipulator, mine rescue robot. The problems of both non-repeated environment recognition and telepresence without direct visibility must be solved. The more a robots integration is the less investments and the more efficiency are. Computer simulation of robotics-based mining is founded on a base of 6 robots functional models, Petri nets and library of 30 robotized technologies. There are some examples of mine robotization in the paper.

The use of chemical additives in ultrafine grinding will be reviewed in this paper for the case of grinding of quartz in solutions of surfactants and inorganic electrolytes including some dispersants under different conditions of pH and ionic strength Mechanisms are examined by correlating the grinding effects with those obtained for the influence of these chemicals on zeta potential, pulp fluidity and flocculation/dispersion characteristics The analysis suggests grinding depends mainly on the state of aggregation of the ground products inside the mill and pulp fluidity Implications of the observed effects on ultrafine grinding in general are discussed
