1. INTRODUCTION Roadheaders have a shadowy origin - probably in Eastern Europe - but were introduced to Europe and the West by the importation of a Russian PK3 machine by the National Coal Board in 1961. A number of features rendered this type of machine an attractive tool for coal mine operators: its flexibility of operation, its combined cutting and loading ability, the opportunity it provided of making any shape of roadway, as well as its ability to cut some rocks. Encouraged and sponsored by the National Coal Board, the development of roadheaders was taken up in Great Britain, notably by Anderson Strathclyde and Dosco; in Europe, predominantly in numerical terms by Voest Alpine and Paurat. Over the 24 years since the importation of the first PK3, evolutionary development has taken place to the extent that machines are now available in many forms up to 120 tons in weight. Machine design has altered, partly as a result of increased power requirements and partly in line with the use of a ripping or a co-axial head. However, the basic concept remains: a boom containing a motor and transmission gear, with a driven cutting head at its extremity and capable of universal movement urged by hydraulic rams mounted on the boom turret and on the machine deck. Generally, the turret, hydraulic powerpack and all other necessary equipment are mounted on a chassis, which contains a discharge conveyor, the whole being carried on caterpillar tracks so that a complete machine entity is provided. One of the steps in an ore reserve estimate is customarily a rigorous calculation of the in situ grade of the orebody itself. The result of this calculation is usually reduced by some purely arbitrary factor to force the calculation to agree with the observed grade of ore actually mined. The failure of the calculation to realistically depict the grade of ore actually extracted is in many instances not the result of either an incorrect calculation procedure or of sloppy mining practice, but is a direct consequence of unsuspected irregularities in the contact between the orebody and the surrounding wall rock. A pattern of holes spaced at 1.5-3.Om foot intervals, drilled as part of a pre-development program, will often reveal that a presumed "regular' ore/waste contact is, in fact, so highly irregular that it will be next to impossible to separate ore from waste during mining. In such an instance, 'fingers' of waste projecting into the mining block will substitute for equal volumes of ore left outside the mining limits. As a result, the grade of material actually mined will be less than the grade envisioned for the orebody. The volume of waste substituting for ore in the mining block is about 0.4X, where X = the average error in projecting the ore/waste contact between alternate holes in the test pattern, and is expressed in units of volume per unit of area of the contact surface.

Besides the question of the stability of the roof and walls, one of the main problems encountered with tunnelling and shaft-sinking through the soft ground of alluvial origin forming the sub-grade of most large towns is settlement. Public transport and road tunnels in town centres are particularly affected, as they cannot generally be designed at any great depth for several reasons, such as the fact that ventilation shafts and access to the surface by means of stairs, escalators, lifts, ramps and so on must be fitted into the limited space available and are therefore costly, and because of the difficulties of driving below the water table. It is for this reason, coupled with the need for wide radius curves, that tunnels now so often pass close under buildings and monuments which must not be exposed to any risk of damage from subsidence during excavation. Grouting is the usual method used for consolidating soils, improving their strength and making them less compressible, but it is itself liable to cause heaving and cracks in the buildings above and has many other attendant dangers, including continually revised estimates which are the reason for the often inordinately high costs met with in urban tunnelling to-day. Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.

Epithermal vein systems are often modeled as simple, discrete high grade structures within low grade host rock. However, geologic setting and structural preparation influence how such vein systems form. In structurally complex areas, veins may follow several structural trends and occur on a variety of scales. Geologic and grade modeling within such complex structural regimes can be difficult as individual veins cannot be delineated from host rock based on grade alone. Structurally complex areas require a different approach than traditional discrete vein modeling. Presented herein is a study of a structurally complex area that hosts vein mineralization to be mined underground. All veins could not be modeled discretely, so an alternate approach was needed. Major structures were modeled using surface and underground mapping and were then used to create a structural trend for the area. This trend was used to guide 3D grade shell construction. The grade shells replaced 3D vein solids for grade estimation in order to mitigate the influence of high grade samples. Structurally guided grade shell construction offers a more effective modeling method than discrete vein modeling in deposits that are structurally complex.

The degree of fragmentation of dispersed systems of brittle materials such as pulverised rock has been described by a fractal dimension i.e. the fragmentation fractal. This fractal dimension represents a power law size-frequency distribution, where, in this case, the size is defined as the square root of the projected area. The existence of a fractal dimension for the number-size distribution, of the progeny of failure event, is direct evidence for scale invariance of the fragmentation process. Since a fractal dimension infers that failure mechanisms operate on all scales it has been suggested that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fracture resistance properties of materials during fragmentation. In order to investigate this a range of rocks of varying fracture toughness were broken under similar levels of impact velocity in the dynamic tensile failure of single particles. The fragmentation fractals determined from the resultant particle populations, of the breakage experiments, were monitored and are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies both in coal and non-coal mines to evaluate methods for sampling diesel particulates in underground mines. The agency is investigating size separation techniques to distinguish between diesel particulate and respirable coal mine dust. Additionally, ashing techniques have been used to distinguish diesel particulate from mineral dust in metal and non-metal mines. As part of these studies, personal exposures to diesel particulate for various mining occupations have been measured. This paper describes the measurement techniques and summarizes the exposure levels for various underground mining operations.

The Ekati process plant flowsheet features the common steps in diamond recovery plant design. Primary treatment and concentration is by crushing, scrubbing, high-pressure grinding rolls and heavy medium separation (Fig. 1). Secondary concentration is by an attrition mill; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation and X-ray sorting (Fig. 2). All of these are performed on site, although final sorting of the diamonds into commercial categories will be carried out elsewhere. The initial throughput rate is 9 kt/d (9,900 stpd), increasing to 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) during the first 10 years of operation. A range of ore characteristics will be encountered that will effect the plant operating conditions during the life of the mine. The adopted design envelope is based on these expected variations. The design is based on the use of large-scale equipment, incorporating the latest and most efficient technology available. Where proven technology exists, no attempt was made to reinvent the wheel. However, where recently developed technology offers a significant advantage, this has been incorporated into the design. The Ekati run-of-mine (ROM) and coarse ore handling facilities are unheated, to take advantage of the better handling characteristics of the frozen ore in winter. The stockpile reclaim features an MMD mineral sizer (a toothed roll crusher) to minimize the problems of handling thawed, sticky kimberlite in the summer and break frozen lumps in the winter. All processing downstream from primary crushing and the coarse ore stockpile is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building. Personnel involvement in the process is mini¬mized by using a Modicon Quantum series PLC with human-machine-interfaces (HMI) running Wonder-ware software on dedicated personal computers.

The thin film balance (TFB) technique was used to measure the equilibrium thicknesses of the water films formed between two oil phases. The measurements were conducted with dodecane at varying concentrations of dodecylammonium chloride, pH, and electrolyte concentration. The data obtained in the present work were used to calculate the surface forces acting between the two oil phases. The calculation was carried using the Extended-DLVO theory with the surface potentials calculated from the Gibbs adsorption isotherm. The results show that oil droplets suspended in water are hydrophobic and the hydrophobicity changes with surfactant and electrolyte concentrations.

Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

In this article we present Sustainable Value, a valuation methodology to assess sustainable value creation of companies. Sustainable Development posits that decisions must not only take into account economic capital but also natural and social capital. Sustainable Value, the methodology presented in this paper, borrows the idea from financial economics that the return on capital has to cover the cost of the capital. Capital costs are determined as opportunity costs, i.e. the forgone return that would have been created by an alternative investment. By expanding the well established logic of the valuation of economic capital in financial markets to also cover natural and social capital we provide a methodology that allows an assessment of the most efficient allocation of economic, natural, and social capital for sustainable value creation in companies. We demonstrate the practicability of the methodology by the valuation of the sustainability performance of British Petroleum (BP).

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

Cyanidation is one of the most common practices used in the extraction of gold and silver. One method of application is heap or dump leaching which entails the leaching of the gold or silver ore by spraying or dripping a cyanide lixiviant over the ore and collecting the effluent. The ore is placed on what is known as a leach pad system. A typical leach pad system consists of a foundation, a leakaqe detection system, a liner, and a cover layer (Strachan and van Zyl, 1988). There are many types of liners available for use. The type of liner depends upon what type leaching pad system us used. Generally, leaching pad systems can be categorized into two types: an expandable pad and a reusable pad. An expandable pad exposes the liner to the elements only in the initial stages of ore placement on the leach pad system. A reusable pad exposes the liner to the elements on a periodic basis. In addition to the exposure to the elements, the liner is also under the stress of the ore placed on it and the stress of the vehicular traffic across it. These stresses and exposure to the elements are the major causes of liner failures, which can appear as punctures, tears, cracks, and deterioration. Because of the possibility of the failure of the pads to contain cyanide-laden solutions the designs for liners of pads and ponds have become more and more stringent. Currently, though, there is some recognition that in some locales such stringent design criteria may not be required (Chatwin, 1989). Some soils have significant cyanide attenuation and degradation capacity. It has been found that soils containing carbon- aceous materia1 wi11 remove cyanide from solutions percolating through them (Chatwin, 1989). Of course metallurgists have long recognized the deleterious effect of carbonaceous material in the mill circuit. Sheridan, et a1 (1988) have shown that WAD cyanide is detected in the effluent of a 2 m column filled with ground carbonaceous ore only after it had been continuously washed with greater than 9 pore volumes of NaCN solution. It was decided to examine the potential of successfully attenuating cyanide by placing an organic material layer between a 1iner and the prepared soil base. One consideration for the selection of the organic material was cost. Sawmill wastes, ground agricultural wastes (such as corn cobs), and other organic wastes were considered. But the first waste to be tested was a product found at any metropolitan area, sewage sludge.

In 1969, the OECD conducted a survey internationally to determine the status and needs for research and development in the field of tunneling. The findings also have some validity for underground excavation in general and for underground mining per se. Of the 17 countries responding to the survey, the U.S. leads in the level of support: $21.8 million and 720 man-years of effort over the last ten-year period. The total volume of R/D for the 17 countries was estimated to be $86 million and 5800 man-years. Performance of research was primarily by government agencies and public utilities (70%); the balance was conducted by private organizations and universities (15% each). In the categories of R/D subjects surveyed, three--Wk mechanics, soil mechanics, and geological exploration--outstripped all the rest in priority of effort to date. Ground support, equipment development, excavation, and environmental control received intermediate attention. The subject areas in which the least R/D effort has been expended are materials handling and systems evaluation. For the future, those R/D areas rated the most crucial to achieve technological progress in tunneling were excavation, ground support, and materials handling. The survey findings of tunneling activity indicated (1) a disturbingly low level of R/D activity in the private sector, (2) the necessity for a reordering of priorities in directing research efforts in the future, and (3) a lack of recognition to date of the importance of systems evaluation in R/D activities.

Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. It is important to communicate with both faculty and students candidly on both the posi-

Geochemical and mineralogical analyses of 46 samples from six drill cores in the Mayday mine pile near Silverton, Colorado, demonstrate wide variability in trace metal contents with spatial location. This variability results from the original geochemical composition of mined rocks, mixing of ore and non- ore rocks during emplacement of the pile, and weathering since rocks were placed in the pile. Weathering reactions are controlled by factors such as pile thickness (depth), water availability, microbial activity, and mineral dissolution and formation kinetics. These factors result in variable redistributions of trace metals from primary (ore) to secondary (weathering products) minerals within each core.

The development of economical and effective treatment processes for solid and aqueous waste is a critical issue facing the mining industry today. Cyanide, nitrates and acid rock drainage are environmentally sensitive effluents that require treatment or containment for acceptable disposal. In situ biotreatment processes are an emerging technology (Thayer) for cyanide oxidation, denitrification, sulfide mineral alteration and metal re- mineralization. Biological cyanide oxidation is competitive with chemical treatment processes (peroxide, alkaline chlorination) for process solutions, spent ore and tailings detoxification. Microbial denitrification treats mine waste contaminated with nitrates from blasting, processing or nitrification of the host rock. Bio-alteration of sulfide minerals and metal re-mineralization may present the most cost-effective and environmentally acceptable method of dealing with sulfide tailings and leachate solutions. Field test programs for cyanide bio-degradation and denitrification of spent ore and process solutions were designed and run at two mines. Although the treatment bacteria and the application processes are similar, each waste presented site-specific problems for adapting the biotreatment processes. Some of the site problems include climate, ore geochemistxy, field bacteria production, waste microbiology and application engineering. This paper compares treatment design and results for cyanide oxidation and denitrification in heap detox treatments.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. Members of AIME, I read to you now a portion of a very fine business letter which we received several years ago. This letter originated in Rangoon, Burma, and reads in part: "Rest assured, if your goodselves see with us eye to eye, sure as certain we should get the business". I don't plan to give anybody "the business" today, but you can rest assured that if some of "you goodselves see with me eye to eye" on what I am about to discuss, I would be most pleased. My talk with you today will discuss the Federal Corporate income tax and its effect on our lives as engineers. In the-engineering-construction business we are faced with all the usual form of taxation which includes such items as sales tax, use tax, school tax, contractor; gross receipt tax, import duties and excise taxes, severance taxes, etc, adinfinutum.
