To understand the intricate nature of blast damage and counter the associated problems, small-scale blasting experiments were performed on hydrostone blocks. Tests were then conducted during a drifting operation in a quartzite quarry. Blast damage was assessed by different techniques. On the basis of the experimental results, the effects of the energy partitioning characteristics of explosives on the damage were identified.

Strategic Data Planning (SDP) is an emerging technique for the analysis and design of information systems. This paper describes the use of strategic data planning in the formulation of a complete integrated set of mining technical systems for the Koolan Island iron ore mine. Applications covered include hydrogeology, geology, mine planning, surveying, quality control, laboratory and mine production recording. Koolan Island is 13 kilometres long and 5.5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Its sole industry is an open pit iron ore mine of 3 million tonnes annual capacity, owned and operated by BHP Minerals. Some of the production is used by BHP Steel International, but most is exported. The orebody is steeply dipping and is mined bench by bench. Outturn grades for run-of-mine product are iron 66.5%, silica 3.0%, alumina 1.0%. Computer systems are run on Data General equipment, currently an MV10000. Computer applications, which are shared across mine sites, are developed and maintained by BHP Information Systems in BHP's Melbourne Office.

During the last ten years Parsons Brinckerhoff has become a leader in the area of tunnel rehabilitation. A significant part of any tunnel rehabilitation program is the control of groundwater infiltration into the structure. This leakage over time, causes deterioration of the structures, and creates numerous operational problems for the tunnel operator. This paper will address current procedures for identification, documentation, and recommendations of repair methods for the control of groundwater infiltration in rail and highway tunnels.

Two new coal use technologies are on the verge of commercial acceptance by the utility industry: atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and gasification combined cycle (GCC). Generating plants under construction or in planning will replace older pulverized coal (PC) boilers or substitute for new PC boiler capacity. This paper reports recent developments in the commercialization of AFBC and GCC, emphasizing the potential impact on the coal mining industry. The influence of coal quality characteristics on fuel selection is explored by means of preliminary economic calculations for different coals and competing fuels.

INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT'Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT'Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM's. Studies of long chain 'ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. INTRODUCTION For more than a century, artificial ground freezing has been used for groundwater control and structural support for excavations. Most of the early uses of the freezing method were for sinking deep access shafts for mines and tunnels (1,2,3,4). More recently, ground freezing has increasingly been used for construction of large diameter cofferdams and soft-ground and mixed-face tunnels (5). Although ground freezing has been used in the past-for tunnels, it was invariably used as a last resort measure, where more conventional measures could not be used. The more recent freezing applications, however, have become increasingly cost competitive with more conventional techniques, and are now being included as part of the design concept (6,7,8,9,10,11,12). The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the more recent applications of ground freezing for tunnel construction. The paper begins with a brief description of the most commonly used freezing system, the Poetsch process. Recent tunneling projects utilizing ground freezing for structural support are then discussed. If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

The use of virtual reality (VR) technologies to train miners is an evolving area in research and development. In July 2006, representatives of 14 international organizations met to discuss current VR-related efforts and explore ways to employ VR in the future. This paper gives an overview of the various approaches presented at the meeting and discusses directions for future implementation. An example of a training package that teaches mine map-reading skills is presented. The meeting was the first step to building collaborations for furthering VR applications for mining. Planning has begun for a 2008 meeting open to broader participation.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). In mineral processing practice, flocculation is largely established as an engineering technique of waste water treatment and the study of parameters increasing the settling velocity of particles is still of great importance to improve the process. Further investigations were made using quartz (Q89) and fluorite samples (F91) which included 58.8% and 65.8% of -2.3 µm particles respectively. In all the experiments the flocculation phenomena were observed varying the pH value of the aqueous suspension. In contrast to quartz particles (Q89) which did not flocculate for all pH values, it was, noticed that fluorite particles (F91) flocculated in the alkaline range of pH over 11. With an aqueous suspension containing equal quantities of Q89 and F91, a hetero-flocculation of particles was observed at a range of pH below 10. In this case, the maximum floc size of the hetero-flocculation was 37.0-26.2 µm This size was about three times larger than when quartz (Q84) and fluorite particles (F85) were used with 32.4% and 40.4% of -2.31 µm particles respectively. Besides, in the experiments using Q89 and F91, the maximum size of hetero-flocculated single particles was found to be 6.54 µm instead of 3.27 µm as obtained with Q84 and F85.

The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

The disposal of hazardous chemical wastes will be one of the major environmental issues of the 1980s. About 45 Mt of hazardous wastes are produced yearly. One major aspect of the problem is the siting, design, and construction of' environmentally acceptable disposal facilities to accommodate this huge volume of material. Surface mines have been considered attractive for development as disposal sites for several reasons. • Surface mines offer an open pit that can conveniently serve as a repository for wastes. This could represent a significant economic, savings when compared with sites on undisturbed lands that might require extensive excavation or embankment construction. • Surface mines often have an abundance of mine spoil available that could potentially serve as construction material. This could result in a significant economic advantage over other sites that might require extensive amounts of construction material to be excavated or hauled in. • Operation of a commercial disposal facility in a surface mine can reduce or totally alleviate reclamation costs. • For an abandoned surface mine, conversion into a disposal facility could represent a positive form of land use and may provide a means for reclaiming lands that would otherwise remain unreclaimed. Despite these positive reasons, there are many technical factors associated with surface raining that can make the prospect of disposal site development an uncertain one. Before discussing factors associated with mining that can present siting, design, or construction problems, some understanding of the basic components of a chemical waste disposal facility is necessary.

Looking back over the last 150 years or so, it is not hard to see that electricity has been a primary force in shaping human development. It has been a basic ingredient in our industrial revolutions that simultaneously improved the productivity, working and living conditions within our farms, factories, hospitals, offices and homes. Today, it has become an essential part of our daily life and our future. Amazingly, we keep finding new ways to use electricity to make our lives more safe, comfortable and productive. It is a great success story of human ingenuity, achievement and development. Demand for electricity The convenience and value of electricity has not gone unnoticed by consumers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Energy Information Administration, 2009), electricity is the fastest growing form of energy in the world and during the next 20 years the world will likely consume twice as much of it as it does today. In 2008, almost 20,000 terawatt hours of electricity globally were consumed (Energy Information Administration, 2009). That is enough electricity to light up more than two million baseball stadiums or power more than 11 billion computers continuously for an entire year. The United States has the dubious distinction of be-ing the largest consumer of electricity in the world with enough power to provide each American with more than 3 kW of electricity ? that is about twice the power currently available to Europeans, eight times the power available to the Chinese and more than 25 times the power available to the citizens of India (American Coal Foundation, 2009).

INTRODUCTION When Palmer King asked me to prepare a paper for this conference, it seemed quite appropriate, since I am Chairman of Subcommittee No. 4 of the U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and we are presently making a detailed study of contracting practices. Before the end of this year, we expect to publish our report containing guidelines aimed at improving our contracting practices and minimizing the problems which develop therefrom. The American construction and mining industries today are glowing examples of the ingenuity of man pitting his wits against the unknown. Without the promise of rewards commensurate with the perils faced and the effort expended, it is doubtful that these industries could have reached their present state of advancement. Nevertheless, these industries are still primitive compared to many others such as aerospace and electronics. That our present contracting practices leave something to be desired is evidenced by the fact that many of our underground projects wind up with tremendous increases in estimated cost, financial disaster, and costly dispute and litigation. The situation is aggravated by the current economic uncertainty, energy crisis, and shortage of materials. At the same time, if our industries are to develop their maximum technologic potential, we must employ contracting practices which will encourage that development. It is a very difficult task to estimate the immediate roof and support behavior in a room-and-pillar mining section in the initial phase of the mining project. There is little information available at this phase, and it is restricted to geomechanic characterization of the rock layers from cores samples, and the in-situ instrumentation of experimental entries and intersections. Even being a pilot excavation for roof support test a good indicator for the behavior of the immediate roof, its behavior for a full excavation mining section is different from a single intersection of two entries, mainly because the stress redistribution caused by the multiple entries excavation and face advance for a full excavation section. The objective of this paper was to calibrate a 3-D numerical model of an experimental intersection, based on the in-situ instrumentation of an experimental intersection excavation, and the geomechanic description of the rock layers. The numerical model was built with the same specifications as the excavation test, including the entry geometry and roof support. The numerical model calibration was based on wire extensometers that were installed at different positions in the roof of the pilot excavation, and on the geomechanic characterization of the rock layers that form the roof, coal seam, and floor. Therefore, it is possible to estimate whether the roof support specification adopted in the test phase will be good enough for the development of the entire mining section.

INTRODUCTION In 1974 two of the present authors reported the results of a pilot study indicating an increase of lung cancer risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Muller, Wheeler, 1973, 1974) The study was based on data contained in a computerized Mining Master File maintained by the Ontario Workmen's Compensation Board that contained information on miners examined in Ontario who had either 60 months of dust exposure in mines or had signs of pneumoconiosis or tuberculosis. Including the above conditions the definition of uranium miners added the condition of one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario. This list of Ontario uranium miners contained 8,649 names. Following the results of this first pilot study, we embarked on creating a file of uranium miners containing information on men with one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario without any further conditions. This file was used by the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines in their study of risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Hewitt 1976) This file contained 15,094 names. In this report we give an outline and progress report on a study of Ontario miners that we are conducting at present. It was felt that the male population of Ontario is not necessarily an adequate control population for uranium miners. A preliminary examination of the work history of uranium miners indicated that the majority of them (about 90 percent) had other mining experience in addition to their exposure in uranium mines. We therefore considered it useful to evaluate the possible effects of non-uranium mining on risk, and for this reason decided to make the Uranium Miners Study part of a study dealing with the mortality of Ontario miners in general. Aims of the Study The aims of the Study include the evaluation of: 1) the risk of dying by cause in non-uranium miners as compared to the male population of Ontario and Northern Ontario. 2) any differences that might exist in the death experience of non-uranium miners by cause according to ore mined. 3) the effect of length of exposure in non-uranium mines on age-specific risk by cause. 4) the dose-response function for primary cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung from exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters. 5) the possible effect of the mining environment on deaths from causes other than cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung. The study will address itself to a number of other factors that might well affect the dose-response function. These include: a) factors in the mine environment - other than radon daughters - that might affect lung cancer mortality. b) the effect of non-uranium mining on lung cancer risk in uranium miners. c) the effect of age as well as age at time of exposure on lung cancer risk. d) questions of latency and the possible dependence of latency on age at time of exposure. e) smoking as an important factor in lung cancer risk. f) Histological type of cancer in relation to the various parameters of exposure and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Study is making use of existing computerized data files and has set up certain new files. These include the Mining Master File and the Model Development File. The Mining Master File This file is a computerized record of data on individual miners obtained at yearly miners' examinations that have been carried out since the mid 1920's. The conditions for inclusion in the Mining Master File have been indicated above. Information contained in the file includes: (1) Identifying information: a) Surname and given names b) Date and place of birth c) Miners Certificate Number d) Social Insurance Number if available. (2) Updated Employment data obtained at each miner's examination: a) Year of first dust exposure in Ontario b) Year of first dust exposure outside Ontario c) Number of months worked in mining d) Ores mined e) Mining areas and mines f) Occupations

The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

With the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), and the implementation of state permanent programs, underground coal mining operations are for the first time subject to government regulations regarding subsidence. These regulations now and in the future will directly affect the manner in which mining companies mine their coal. Since the promulgation of the original final regulations by OSM, numerous changes in those regulations have been made and many additional changes are pending in the near future. This paper will discuss state and federal approaches to regulating underground coal mines and examine issues surrounding future subsidence regulations.
