"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. The distributions of gold and associated elements in mineral grains from a pyritic gold ore were studied by optical microscopy, and by SEM and SIMS imagery. Products studied were a sulfide flotation concentrate, a calcined sulfide concentrate, a cyanide leached calcine, and a cyanide leached pressure oxidation residue. Individual pyrite grains are compositionally zoned and solid solution gold occurs in some, but not all zones. Most of the gold in calcined products is present as metallic coalesced grains that are smaller than 100 angstroms. Gold lost into cyanide leached residues from the calcines tends to be in “semi-dense” grains that cannot be distinguished from gold-free grains except by SIMS analysis. The gold in cyanide leached pressure oxidation residues occurs as solid solution gold in unoxidized pyrite remnants.

Stratabound Proterozoic precious metal mineralization in central Arizona is associated with felsic and adnesitic to mafic volcanic rocks and sediments derived from these rocks. Hydrothermal fluids associated with felsic volcanism form gold mineralization within hotspring vent complexes or within asymetric basins, which flank the vent complexes and are filled with tuffaceous sediments. Massive to semi-massive sulfide copper-zinc systems associated with felsic volcanism may locally contain small gold occurances either laterally or vertically zoned from the ore. In andesitio to mafic rocks, zinc-lead-gold-silver-copper bearing mineralization and gold mineralization are both associated with feruginous sulfide bearing cherts. The partitioning of gold into these specific geologic environments may be related to variations in temperature and composition of the hydrothermal fluid and the depth of the seawater-sediment interface below sea level during the mineralization event.

Over the past decade mined unlined rock cavern storage for crude oil and refined products has become economically more attractive. This trend is likely to continue, primarily due to advances in excavation methods, rising steel costs for above ground tanks and larger capacity requirements. The construction experience related in this paper comprises the excavation of more than 80 storage facilities (total capacity 90 million bbl) for crude and refined products ranging from propane to heavy fuel oil. This paper also deals with the experience gained as well as the problems derived from the utilization of these oil storage facilities.

Column flotation has been successfully implemented on a production scale in the Athabasca oil sands. In this application, bitumen is recovered and mineral matter is simultaneously rejected from a middling stream originating from a primary separation vessel. Exploiting the natural hydrophobicity of bitumen, the middlings streams have traditionally been processed utilizing conventional, mechanical flotation cells. Although these cells offer adequate bitumen recovery and mineral rejection rates, operating costs are high due to the required maintenance of the wetted mechanical components. In comparison, column flotation provides superior metallurgical performance while offering a lower maintenance demand. Both metallurgical and mechanical characteristics of column flotation are discussed to demonstrate the benefits of this technology for the recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach based on deposit-specific information, such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are: • leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, • detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess manganese distribution and leaching efficiencies, • deposit characterization and evaluation, and • development of potential manganese recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau's research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

The legacy of gold mining operations continues to affect water quality in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the tailings dumps liberates heavy metals from the ore minerals. The objective of this study was to characterise the geochemical processes that are important in understanding chemical evolution of polluted water in the study area. Analytical results for water samples collected in the catchment of the study area generally showed elevated concentrations of heavy metals in the vicinity of tailings dumps and mining operations and a decrease in the distal. Dams and wetlands, despite their proximity to the tailings dumps, recorded low concentrations of heavy metals and other pollutants. The characterisation of AMD was summarised in a conceptual model in which plots of redox potential versus pH and electrical conductivity versus pH were identified as the most important sub-models that captured the gross physical-chemical characteristics of polluted water and its interaction with the environment.

The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy techniques. The cyclic voltammetry was used to elucidate oxidation/reduction reactions, whereas impedance spectroscopy was used for in-situ characterization of the interface. To analyze the impedance spectra, equivalent circuit models were constructed based on a layer- wise growth of reaction products. Parameters of the equivalent circuit were calculated by comparing the experimental spectrum with that expected on the basis of equivalent circuit. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers were inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution. From such changes the effect of oxygen and collector concentration on the contact angle and flotation behavior of chalcopyrite were interpreted.

Nevada Goldfields' Aurora Mine consists of a 270 mtpd (300 tpd) precious metals mining and milling facility located 28 miles southwest of Hawthorne, Mineral County, Nevada and lies within five kilometers of the Nevada-California border. (Figure 1) Ore production presently is derived 85% from an open pit source with the balance from underground. The Aurora Mill is a compact conventional cyanide plant utilizing a carbon-in-leach extraction process followed by stripping of loaded carbon and electrowinning at Nevada Goldfields Kingston Mine, located near Austin, Nevada. Production commenced in December 1987 and annual gold production is currently 20,000 troy ounces of gold and 22,000 troy ounces of silver per annum, produced at an average cash cost of $178 per ounce of gold. Tailings handling at, Aurora was originally accomplished using a belt filter press producing a solid cake that was then transported to a final storage area. Although overall operating costs at the mine were' in the lower percentile of producing gold mines, the tailings handling portion of the operating costs were inordinately high.

The dissolution behavior of gold and silver from Au/Ag alloys in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of cyanide, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were obtained in view of the anodic and cathodic current-potential relationships. The results were discussed in terms of a mixed potential theory. The results showed that the dissolution rate of gold and silver from the alloys was partially controlled by chemical reaction, but largely by transport of either oxygen or cyanide, depending on their relative concentration under the experimental conditions employed in this study.

Safety training requirements differ from mine to mine due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Accordingly, a microcomputer-based procedure has been developed to assist mine trainers is determining if undesired worksite performances result from lack of knowledge or skill, which are trainable categories, or from categories that are considered to be non-trainable (such as equipment limitations or management procedures). A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

Determination of the pre-mining geochemical baseline in bed sediments in watersheds impacted by historical mining activity is important in establishing watershed restoration goals. We have developed methods to solve this problem in the Animas River watershed, southwestern Colorado, using geomorphologic mapping to identify terraces that contain pre-mining sediments. Following a systematic evaluation of possible sites, we collected samples of pre-mining sediments in gravel deposits from 21 sites throughout the watershed. Geochemical analysis of individual layers has produced a chemical stratigraphy that can be tied to the historical record through geochronological and dendochronological studies. Analysis of geochemical data, when coupled with the historical record, clearly shows that there has been a major impact on the geochemistry in bed sediments in the active stream channel by past mining activities. Historical mining has resulted in a substantial increase in metals in the very fine sand to clay-sized component of the bed sediment of the upper Animas River, and Cement and Mineral Creeks, which are the major tributaries of the Animas River. Enrichment factors for metals in modem bed sediments, relative to the pre-mining sediments, range from 1 to 6 for arsenic, 1 to more than 10 for cadmium, 1 to about 15 for copper, 1 to more than 25 for lead, 1 to more than 10 for silver, and 1.6 to more than 12 for zinc. The pre-mining bed sediment geochemical baseline is high relative to average crustal abundance values of many metals. The Animas River watershed above Silverton, Colorado would be readily identified as a highly mineralized area suitable for mineral exploration if it were not disturbed by mining.

Spherical oxide particles can be used as mineral fillers, paint pigments, polishing materials and catalysts. They can be prepared using various techniques involving precipitation and spray drying. Melting of particles in a high-temperature flame is a simple technique which produces particles with a high degree of sphericity and high smoothness from non-spherical feed material. In current research the preparation of alumina particles by melting the feed material in a hydrogen- oxygen flame is described. The spherical particles obtained were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray difiaction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electrokinetic measurements. The particles pre- pared exhibit a high degree of sphericity and a low level of roughness. The chemical composition of the material after preparation is unchanged, however the crystallographic structure is different. It is suggested that alumina changes from pure a-alumina to a mixture of different transitional forms. Changes in the electrokinetic behavior were also observed for alumina which can be attributed to the strong dehydration of the oxide surface and/or change in the crystallographic structure. Also, the possible accommodation of trace amount of impurities in the surface zone during melting cannot be ignored.

Background In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore, from a system's point of view, slurry transporta¬tion would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alterna¬tive examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasi¬biliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. l . The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then tempo¬rarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situ¬ations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe¬line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2), a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. The results of an experimental and theoretical research study into the spatial and temporal behavior of dust in mine airways is summarized. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions. The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and deposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aero- sol monitors (RAM-I) to determine the dispersion coefficient in a mine airway. On the theoretical font, a convection diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. In this paper, comparative analyses of results (8 the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model are presented. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion are examined in light of the experimental observations. The experimental data from controlled experiments compared more favorably with model predicted results for similar conditions as opposed to the comparative analysis results for in-mine experiments. Specifically, the model predictions for an 800-m stretch of a mine airway reveal some significant differences from the behavior noticed in the mine. The deposition was lower than that predicted by the model. Consequently, concentrations were higher than those predicted by the model. The implications of these and other findings for further investigations are discussed in the paper.

Many a deposit estimation has been carried out since geostatistical methods were first implemented. To date however few mining programs have totally been completed and even fewer comparisons can be drawn between estimated reserves and extracted ore tonnages. Aluminium Pechiney work a number of bauxite mines in Southern France. As from 1969 they modified their deposit estimation methods, giving up traditional approaches and opting for geostatistics. At that time, the authors of this paper were entrusted with the first geostatistical estimations and in particular, those concerning the deposits mentioned herein. Over the past decade a number of deposits have been worked out and we thought it interesting to report about comparative results. French bauxite deposits are of the karstic, as opposed to the lateritic, type. The bauxite, formed at some distance of the present-day deposit, was brought to and trapped in limestone karst pits. Subsequent physical and chemical alterations may have taken place : silica and carbonate drifts, recent karst slips. The morphology of these deposits is often rather complicated. The deposits are small from a few hundred thousand to a few million tons at the most. The overburden thickness usually precludes open mining. Mining investments and financial risks are often high, making it necessary to obtain optimal information on the deposit considered for mining. For the three cases brought up in this paper, deposit sizes, exploration methods and conclusions differ. They are brought up mainly to show the advantages inherent to a quality geostatistical study and the lessons drawn by Aluminium Pechiney.
