Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton" Nevada is associated with a poly-metallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shales, limestones and dolomites. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins containing gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of approximately 7.7 M.T., which averages 0.05 OPT gold and 0.5 OPT silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of 35,000 ounces of gold and 300,000 ounces of silver.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

This paper describes the results of a study of hydrometallurgical methods of producing sodium arsenate for the glass industry from arsenic oxide wastes occurring in carbon dioxide washing. This paper addresses the following aspects: theoretical assumptions for leaching arsenic and its oxides, experimental results of As(III) oxidation to As(V) in aqueous solutions, sodium arsenate crystallization (the system As2O5-Na2O-H2O), characteristics of the crystalline product, and pilot-plant tests using sodium arsenate in the glass industry.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

Aqueous pressure oxidation at low temperature, although desirable from a process engineering and operating point of view, presents unique problems when temperatures approach 160°C (320°F). In developing the pressure oxidation process for the Lone Tree Mine, elemental sulfur formation and agglomeration with pyrite proved to be a problem. This paper discusses some of the unique features of the Lone Tree sulfide deposit and its amenability to low-temperature oxidation. Problems encountered during pilot plant operation and their solutions are discussed.

Zircon (ZrSiO4) sand production of about 1.1 Mt/a(1.2 million stpy) predominates the global supply of zirconium minerals. Baddeleyite (ZrO2) contributes less than 1 percent of supply. Zircon is almost exclusively produced as a co-product from the mining of titanium minerals, mainly from mineralized beach sands. In 2004, there were a number of new projects under consideration that were more dependent on zircon revenue than for titanium minerals. This reflected sustained higher zircon prices and forecast ongoing supply shortages in the absence of major new discoveries.

Though generally rather non-selective in nature long chain collectors nevertheless function in different ways in accordance with their own particular physical characteristics. Altering various parts of their structures such as chain length, type of chain, etc. can therefore substantially alter the adsorptive behavior of the collectors in a set environment. The effect of such structural differences of the collectors on physical parameters such as solubility, critical micelle concentration, acid or base strength, tendency to be expelled from the aqueous phase is discussed, as is also the effect of these parameters on flotation behavior.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

In central Utah, a coal mining operation is taking place under an 0.5-m (20-in.) pressurized natural gas pipeline. The room-and-pillar method with pillar extraction is being used to extract the coal from the seams. The pillars beneath the pipeline will not be extracted; however, there is a possibility that some subsidence may occur due to pillar failure. To assess possible damages on the pipeline, an attempt has been made to predict subsidence in the area where pillars may collapse. The resultant values of subsidence strain and slope have been used to determine the magnitude of strain, stress, and shear induced in the pipeline. Also, a network of survey points has been installed along the pipeline to detect ground move¬ment that would indicate excessive subsidence.

In March, 1988, a fire occurred in a large underground coal mine. Coal Mine Safety and Health of the Mine Safety and Health Administration was immediately notified of the situation. They requested the assistance of the Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC) to provide monitoring and analysis of the mine atmosphere in and around the fire area to insure the safety of the miners escaping from the mine and for the miners involved in extinguishing the fire. The capability to provide this type assistance is maintained by the PHTC Offices located at 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The equipment used is maintained field ready and can be mobilized almost immediately. This paper will discuss the response to this recent major mine fire.

The main objective of this study was to remove printing ink from waste newspaper and improve the de-inked paper brightness as close as the unprinted paper by bleaching agents. This paper summarizes results of laboratory investigation into the de-inkability of newsprint printed with offset printing. Different chemicals and process parameters were varied to assess the effect on the brightness and cleanliness. The operations involved in de-inking process are briefly described and some of the problems being encountered are discussed.

Things are going well in the mining and construction industries world-wide. So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. The continuous flow, horizontal drum blender has dynamic properties which may be described by the same type of equations which often arise in electrical filter analysis. Furthermore, the equations may be readily solved by the same techniques used in electrical control analysis. For this reason the blender model developed is termed an "Electric Analog", although strictly speaking it is a mathematical model. Presentation of the dynamic performance of the blender as an electrical (or mathematical) model is desirable for several reasons. The model can be of assistance in correlating performance data with equipment design parameters. The model 'can be used with other process equipment models for simulation of an entire plant operation or in stability studies. In addition, the model may be useful in providing insight into the actual blending mechanism, or it may suggest a similar method of analysis for other closely allied equipment.

Representative collections of recent dolomites, and of samples concentrated by leaching-out of coexisting magnesian calcites, provide grounds for appraisal of the compositions and cation ordering in recent dolomitized sediments. Unit cell volumes for near-stoichiometric compositions exceed those of ordered dolomite and increase as the departures from regular cation order became more pronounced. Infrared absorption maxima of disordered examples occur at perceptibly lower frequencies. Stable isotope ratios indicate that best ordered examples formed in highly saline environments. Present observations are qualitatively reconciled with data from synthetic products described by other authors.

This paper introduces a practical methodology for analyzing vi¬bration records in view of improv¬ing blast designs and preempting anomalous vibrations. This technique, which is based on empirical data, uses a blasting-efficiency determinator (BED) as an indicator of vibration-energy transmission. The method was tested using data from a blasting event at an open-cast coal mine in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The results derived from the BED values showed that geology and delay timing were probably the principal factors that induced high-intensity vibration propagation.
