During iron ore pellet production, bentonite clay is used as a binder. Typical pellet plants spend from $3 million to $5 million annually for the clay. If bentonite dosages could be reduced by using it more efficiently, a significant cost savings would result. If the binding mechanisms can be completely understood, procedures can be developed to use bentonite more efficiently. Classical bentonite bonding theory is based on the behavior of bentonite at low percent solids and high mixing shear rates. Under these conditions, bentonite was understood to expand, disperse into platelets, and dry into a bonding "film" or "gel." However, these are not the conditions that exist during pelletization, which is carried out at high percent solids and relatively low shear rates. In this paper SEM imaging was used to identify and explain the bonding mechanisms of bentonite on the surface of magnetite concentrate. It was determined that bentonite would form a fibrous network under the proper conditions and that the formation of these fibers corresponded with an increase in the bonding of particles by the bentonite.

The reaction kinetics of the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock (32% P?05) using 45% nitric acid were investigated using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) , a newly developed Diffusion Model (DM) and a newly developed Combined Reaction and Diffusion Model (CRDM). This was achieved buy conducting a number of experiments in a controlled batch reactor system at different temperatures. The conversion and the reaction rate were calculated at different time intervals. The SCM based on reaction time and the CRDM characterize the acidulation process of phosphate rock. Diffusion of nitric acid and the products of acidulation at the early stages of reaction through the phosphate rock were found to be the rate-controlling step, resulting in a dif- fusion coefficient, which controls the mass transfer process. The reaction kinetics were found to fit first-order kinetics especially during early stages of reaction time. The deviation of the kinetics from first-order at later stages was due to the fact that the overall reaction was mass transfer controlled with respect to nitric acid and products diffusion.

Under contract to the Department of Energy, Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. and Bonner & Moore Associates developed a group of computer models that can be used to simulate single seam dragline operations. These models have been subsequently modified by Fluor for use in multi-seam dragline mining situations. The single seam model analyzes the digging, spoiling, and walking patterns of draglines to identify possible parameter changes to increase productivity. Parameters such as key-cutting, panel width, digout length, and bench height, etc., are analyzed in this process. The models were tested using data from four operating mines. Field demonstrations were performed to correlate computer optimization results with field data. Productivity was greatly enhanced at one mine site by a change in some of the operating parameters. The multi-seam study has as its objective the development of a broad- based mine planning tool which would be used to identify and quantify the different procedures employed in multi-seam dragline mines to increase their productivity. The major problem identified in multi-seam mining is the sequencing of the different stripping and mining operations. The multi-seam model has the same capabilities as the single seam model. In addition, it models up to four seams with three partings per seam. It allows the operation of several draglines at different levels, and analyzes the effect of ramps, rehandling, and ancillary mining equipment.

Several types of tunnel supports are being investigated experimentally and analytically at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the sponsorship of the Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation. The results of work on two types will be discussed here. These are steel sets and continuous, monolithic steel-fiber-reinforced concrete liners. The latter is a model of a short length of liner that might result from a continuous slip-forming operation in a tunnel excavated with a boring machine. Tests have been performed on both types of support and analyses are being developed which will greatly broaden the scope of the test program. The objective of these studies is to improve the understanding of basic behavior of these supports, and to develop techniques for their analysis. The analyses will then be used to perform parameter studies that will lead to more rational procedures for structural design. The tests provide a check on the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate the overall behavior and modes of failure. Another part of the project is concerned with the interaction of support and medium, and thus prediction of loads for the supports. These studies are presented in greater detail in a recent report (1). A brief outline of results obtained to date are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). The process of selecting a building site for a major structure is a complex procedure involving the consideration of a multitude of factors. The approximate geographic location for a structure is usually fixed by its intended function, though often there may be several site alternatives. Socio-economic, logistic, marketing and political factors are the primary site determinants. Also critical in site planning, however, are the environmental factors, both natural and man-made. These factors will influence the precise siting location within the limits allowed by the primary determinants and will dictate some of the basic design criteria. This paper discusses environmental factors, principally those which are natural conditions, that must be analyzed for five different groups of structures. The importance of thorough site environmental analysis based upon the principles of applied earth science is described. Significant elements to be considered in an appraisal of the geology, hydrology, seismology and meteorology are outlined.

The algorithms to model three stoping methods - sublevel, down- the-hole (DTH) and cut and fill stoping have been developed. These algorithms are capable of designing and performing economic analysis for one or more number of stopes in a continuous orebody. The design and economic analysis of each individual stope are first obtained. This is followed by the composite stope design layout and overall economics of the stopes under study. This paper describes only the stope design aspects of these models. The programs have been written using Fortran 77 with Tektronix graphical aids available at Imperial College Computer Centre (ICCC) London and are based on the basic data obtained from Khetri Copper Complex (KCC) and Rajpura Dariba (a zinc mine) in India. Minor modifications, however, may be necessary in some routines when used on other systems and for other mines.

INTRODUCTION The Cyprus Pima Mine is located 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona and about fifty miles north of the Mexican border. The Cyprus Pima orebody was discovered in 1950. Feasibility studies were begun in 1952 employing underground development. Economic studies showed open pit operations to be feasible and stripping of overburden was begun in late 1955. The first ore was reached in October of 1956. A 3,000 tpd (tons per day) concentrator was completed and began operation January 1, 1957. From these beginnings, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has expanded into a plant processing approximately 54,000 to 56,000 tpd. Four expansions were required to bring the plant up to its present capacity. Each expansion incorporated what had been learned in previous operation of the plant. The first expansion was completed in August of 1963 doubling design capacity to 6,000 tpd. In reality, because of softer than average ore, capacity was closer to 8,000 tpd. Expansion I1 was completed in July 1966 bringing design capacity to 18,000 tpd. Expansion I11 followed immediately. Completed in the summer of 1967, this expansion increased the design capacity to 30,000 tpd. The actual dry tonnage of this portion of the operation in 1974 averaged 38,400 tpd, again, primarily as the result of treating softer than average ore. The latest expansion (Expansion IV), completed in December 1971 and utilizing a semi-autogenous grinding circuit, is located in a separate building (Mill 11) approximately 200 yards southeast of the original mill (Mill I). Expansion IV was designed for 14,000 tpd, but after circuit modifications, averaged 16,500 tpd in 1974.

Distribution coefficients of gold and silver between matte and slag during the pyrometallurgical treatment of nickel-copper sulfide concentrates were evaluated as a function of matte and slag compositions in the temperature range of 1,250oC to 1,300oC. It was observed that the composition of the matte phase, including matte grade and copper content in the matte, significantly affected the distribution behavior of gold and silver in the matte-slag system. Both gold and silver preferentially concentrated in the matte phase as the matte grade increased With increasing temperature and copper content in the matte, the distribution coefficients of silver increased, while the gold distribution coefficients decreased. It was also, found that slag additives such as CaO, MgO, and A12O3 caused a significant decrease in the solubility of both gold and silver in silica-saturated iron silicate slag. An activity coefficient of gold in matte was derived from the experimenta1 results.

The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominant-lithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below.

The primary purpose of the research summarized in this paper was to experimentally investigate the performance of numerous mine ventilation network iterative solution procedures under controlled conditions to determine which procedures were most favorable in terms of number of iterations and total computational speed. The solution methods investigated included: (1) the Newton-Raphson method, (2) the Hardy Cross method, (3) the linear theory method, and (4) the second-order approximation method. The first three of these methods have been widely used while the fourth was formulated by the authors to investigate its potential for ventilation network computation. In addition to the four solution procedures, three methods for selecting the branches in the meshes and three methods for ordering the meshes for computational purposes were also studied during the investigation. As a result of these various options, a total of 36 combinations of solution methods, mesh selection procedures, and mesh ordering schemes were studied. To investigate the performance characteristics of these combinations, an identical set of 180 randomly chosen ventilation networks was used in sets of 30 networks at six different levels of complexity. Here, the level of complexity is defined as a function of the size (number of branches) and the density (number of nodes compared with the number of branches) of the network. To eliminate variations in the solution times due to differences arising from the fans, a single fan with a fixed characteristic was utilized in all the experiments. This paper will deal only with the results for the four iterative methods used to achieve solutions to the mine ventilation networks. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method for mesh selection and random mesh ordering was used throughout the analysis. The conclusions will be based upon a detailed accounting of the efficiency of each method using the total time to achieve a solution to each problem and averaged over the total problem set. However, the number of iterations and the time to complete each iteration will be studied in order to better understand the solution procedures.

The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

Sulphur deposits occur within the upper Salado and Rustler gypsum beds. The formation of a sulphur ore deposit requires large quantities of oil and /or gas, which must find a permeable pathway into the gypsum beds. The Permian beds weathered for 90 million years in an arid environment prior to the advent of a more humid climate at the beginning of the Cretaceous Period. The first Cretaceous rivers enlarged the sinkholes and caverns of the Karstified Permian terrain and deposited coarse conglomerates and sands into the subsurface gypsum beds. The resulting network of caverns and sinkholes, filled with permeable sediments, permitted the free flow of hydrocarbons through gypsum. All sinkholes and caverns infilled with Cretaceous sediments that have penetrated beds of gypsum are associated with sulphur deposits. The Castile gypsum lies directly upon the oil bearing Bell Canyon formation. Sinkholes and caverns filled with Cretaceous sediments occur in the lower Castile. Biogenic calcite and sulphur are adjacent to these sediments. However, faults assume the major role in generating the initial permeability, allowing hydrocarbons to penetrate the lower Castile gypsum. The largest faults are associated with biogenic calcite and sulphur for a distance of 250 meters up from the bottom of the Castile gypsum. It is apparent that two dynamic geological processes are generating permeability within the gypsum beds: (1) the Cretaceous sands decending with difficulty into gypsum and (2) the faults creating permeability in the lower Castile but losing energy through soft bed deformation in the overlying gypsum. Both of these sulphur ore controls are mappable, but another large sulphur deposit of the magnitude of the Culberson Sulphur Mine has yet to be discovered. Construction of the AA Pad reclamation was completed in the fall of 2000. Seeding of the ET cover began in the late fall of 2000 and continued through May of 2001. On Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2002, a large, very localized thunderstorm struck the reclaimed AA Pad site. Eyewitnesses present at the time described a dark storm cloud parked above the site for less than half an hour. Average rainfall intensity was measured to be 122 mm (4.8 inches) per hour and peak rainfall intensity was estimated to be 213 mm (8.4 inches) to 259 mm(10.2 inches) per hour. At the time of the storm, the construction was less than two (2) years old and the vegetation had only a single season of growth. The entire period from the end of construction until the date of the storm was a drought period with below normal precipitation. Other than a few small snowmelt events, there was no precipitation event large enough to produce any significant flow in the channel network. Therefore, the very first significant runoff event was the extreme event of June 1, 2002. The storm essentially represents a large-scale field test of the design concepts used at the AA Pad site. Shortly after the storm, data was collected and analyzed with the intent of learning as much as possible about the performance of the cover system design with the expectation that the newly acquired knowledge might be utilized in future designs to further improve the performance of similar cover systems during extreme events.

The paper covers mining operations and preparation of the ore prior to metallurgical treatment in the Process Plant. Mining operations are primarily concerned with the delivery to Ore Preparation of a balanced ore feed within fairly rigid specifications as to both ore type and chemical analysis. The mining method, systems of geological and engineering control, and the equipment employed are therefore reviewed in this context. In Part One of the paper the physical and geological characteristics of the orebodies, including the varied nature of the ore itself, are first described. Orebody evaluation, the calculation and classification of ore reserves, mining planning and forecasting to ensure continuity of production are covered, and the particular problems presented by sampling, the erratic distribution of ore values and the variation in the density of the ores are also mentioned. Mine design and ore excavation practice are described, together with the way in which they have evolved with recent developments in modern mining equipment. In Part Two of the paper, a detailed description of the Ore Preparation plant is given, centred around the concept of rubbling as a means of separation of the barren hard boulders from soft lateritic ore. Ore blending and ore reclamation operations are explained followed by a detailed description of the drying and crushing plant. The importance of the control of moisture content and ore sizing in the feed to the metallurgical plant is emphasized.

A laboratory testing program was con- ducted to investigate the shear strength along specific soil-liner interfaces for five types of liners of varying thicknesses. Results indicated a bilinear relationship between shear stress and applied normal stresses ranging from 276 to 1000 pKa (40 to 145 psi). Friction angles along the soil- liner interface below the break point normal stress (7.5 to 19 degrees) were lower than those recorded above the break point normal stress (14.5 to 39 degrees ).

The most important event affecting the United States coal industry in 1993 was the strike by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). This was a series of selective strikes, beginning with a strike against four Peabody Holding affiliates on Feb. 2, following unsuccessful contract negotiations between the UMWA and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association (BCOA). Although that strike ended on March 3, the failure to reach a new contract agreement led to walkouts at several Midwestern mines on May 10. During the summer, the strike expanded to include mines of 13 companies in seven states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia. About 17,000 miners were idled during the strike. As the prospects for a settlement diminished, the Secretary of Labor appointed a federal mediator. The mediation resulted in a five-year contract. In addition to increases in wages and pensions, it was agreed that 60% of new job openings would be filled by laid off and active UMWA miners. In return, companies won the right to establish more flexible work rules and scheduling of miners. While some health care benefits were expanded, the agreement established a new health care system that was designed to reduce costs. Preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data indicate that US coal production fell by 5% in 1993, to 859 Mt (947 million st) (Table 1). The strike was one of the primary causes of the decline in production. Another significant cause was a 27% decline in coal exports. Also, a very small displacement of domestic coal production resulted from a rise in coal imports.

INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1).
