A long recognized goal in high speed tunneling and mining has been the development of a continuous drill and blast excavation capability. Both the advance rate and the economy of drill and blast tunneling can be significantly improved if the conventional cyclic process can be carried out continuously. Obviously, any continuous drill and blast tunneling machine must be an "all function" device, performing drilling, explosive loading, initiation, mucking, ventilation, roof support (if necessary), and perhaps other functions, essentially simultaneously, while remaining at the face throughout. Furthermore, such a machine must do all these things under remote control. THE SPIRAL BLAST PATTERN Several continuous drill and blast tunneling concepts have been proposed. Of these the Rapidex spiral blast pattern, taking advantage of a partially self-shielding geometry, seems to require the least shielding and hence offers the maximum access for mucking, although from the outset it was clear that remote mucking would present a major design challenge. The Rapidex continuous spiral blast concept uses an unusual blasting pattern that, under the geological conditions tested, has proven to be an effective and efficient means of fragmentation. The concept has a self-shielding characteristic which permits a lightly shielded machine to remain at the face during blasting. The pattern produces a spirally proceeding tunnel face, much like one turn of an auger. The leading portion of the spiral surface is connected to the trailing portion by an axially extending plane surface or bench. The ideal geometry is illustrated in Figure 1 for a horseshoe tunnel section.

INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. "The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

"Knowledge of the abrasion resistance of aggregates is important when using them for asphalt and concrete mixes and highway construction materials. In this study, the usability of natural building stone waste as aggregates for different engineering applications was investigated. To this end, test samples were obtained from a number of natural stone quarries and stone cutting factories. The abrasion tests were carried out on the test samples and results were compared between samples. The abrasion strength values were determined with both the Micro-Deval (MDe) and the Los Angeles (LA) abrasion test methods. A correlation coefficient was also determined between the LA and MDe tests results using an appropriate statistical model.Introduction The rapid consumption of natural resources has led researchers to work on the efficient utilization of such resources. To this end one can convert waste into useful raw materials, or determine alternative uses of the industrial waste materials. This has become increasingly important as storing or dumping waste may result in environmental problems. In addition, the use of industrial waste in a different application of the construction industry prevents rapid consumption of limited natural resources and can mitigate environmental problems related to raw material production, Industrial waste such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, building demolition material, marble waste and dismantled asphalt have been used as highway and concrete materials (Ahmed 1993, Ramaswamy and Aziz 1992, Schroeder 1994, Ceylan and Manca 2013, Holtz and Eighmy 2000, Hebhoub et al 2011). It is very important to analyze whether these aggregates are of the required quality in terms of their application and their economic life. This analysis can be carried out using various tests such as the Micro-Deval and the Los Angeles abrasion tests, sieve analysis, durability chemical resistance, peeling and adhesion, and freezing-thawing tests (Erdem et al 1996). Specifications for aggregates also include terms that define the grain shape, cleanliness and surface textures."

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts and different numbers of plastics types as well as of fine bulky materials (<4mm). These wastes are mostly given to land-fill sites. Thermal adhesion seems to be a great means to efficiently separate plastics mixes. Tests carried out at a special lab-scale testing unit (TaA1) confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the separating mechanism. The thermal properties of the individual types of plastics differ from each other to a sufficient degree so that special products or product mixes of high material purity can be obtained according to the respective requirements. For this reason, plastics mixes such as PE and PP can be sorted with very good results. The separation efficiency is influenced only by different contact surfaces. The contact period can be adjusted to a short period of time so that sorting large amounts of fine dispersed plastics seems feasible. Sorting processes in feed streams were shown to be technologically effective when applying appropriate technologies. For the time being, the technological application of a thermal adhesion drum separator (TaTr1) is suitable. First tests on such a pilot-scale unit provided good separation results.

Among the impurities present in phosphate ore, dolomite is the most difficult to remove. This is because dolomite and phosphate have similar chemical compositions and because the dissolved species of dolomite is adsorbed on the surface of the phosphate mineral. A new amphoteric surfactant was found to be a suitable collector for the separation of dolomite and phosphate. Flotation results showed that the new amphoteric collector had a high flotation selectivity for dolomite over a wide pH range. studies on the flotation of francolite and dolomite in each other&apos;s supernatant demonstrated that the dissolved ions had little effect on the selectivity of the new collector. It was found, however, that the dissolved ions were detrimental to the flotation separation using sodium oleate as collector. From a mixture offrancolite and dolomite containing 26.2% P2O5, a phosphate concentrate containing 35.2% P205 with a 90% recovery was obtained using 290 g/t of the amphoteric collector. The rejection of MgO was 81.41 %.

Intensive uranium mining activities at the Curilo deposit in Bulgaria has caused widespread contamination over a wide area. A number of receptors including soils and watercourses as well as the ecosystems in the area have been severely affected. Even today, 10 years after the cease of activities, acidic waters generated from the abandoned mining works, the low-grade ore and waste dumps contaminate soil, surface- and groundwater. The present paper describes in general the environmental status of the wider Curilo area and examines the potential of preventive and remedial measures that can be applied in situ to rehabilitate the site and restore the ecosystem. The main rehabilitation technologies examined include modification of the acid generation potential of the pollution sources, treatment of the acidic drainage by means of a natural wetland and in situ bioremediation the of contaminated soils. Finally, a number of efficient indicators are proposed so that the rehabilitation potential at Curilo and similar heavily contaminated sites is assessed.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

This paper proposes a novel method, "integrity factor approach," of mine-pillar stability evaluation based on in situ triaxial-loading measurement. The pillar integrity factor is defined as the quotient resulting from division of integrated total pillar strength across the critical dimension by the integrated total pillar load across the same dimension. The integrity factor is dynamic, while the conventional safety factor is static. With this approach, the pillar stability can be evaluated at any stage of mining progress during panel operation. It automatically considers the progressive failure of the pillar and post-failure strength without the need to clearly define the boundary between yielded and intact zones of the pillar. Based on two case studies, the integrity factor approach is shown to be a practical, effective technique for evaluating stability of conventionally designed pillars. It is suggested that a more realistic estimate of in situ pillar strength could be made based on the combination of in situ triaxial-loading measurements and laboratory true triaxial compression tests, rather than through the traditional combination of biaxial-loading measurements and conventional triaxial compression tests.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. When Dick Robbins asked me to give a keynote address, I felt it might be in order to review some of the practices and techniques used in tunneling and work up to some of the concepts now used to mine and construct tunnels. Needless to say, there have been many changes in tunneling technology and also many changes in the Safety Codes controling them. An example of this latter change was the fact that in 1931, my father excavated the Owyhee Tunnel No.5 with gas locomotives. He was able to do it because there was no natural gas in the rock and the ventilation system was designed to free the tunnel atmosphere from powder and exhaust fumes. Today OSHA rules would never permit gas locomotives underground, although there were no incidents on this particular project. One of my first tunnels, as Project Manager, was the Clear Creek Tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation. Our method of handling muck was the Conway Muckers. This unit was a valuable improvement to the hand mucking of previous generations. The Conway was also used in our Navajo Project, in New Mexico. Unlike the Clear Creek project, where water was one of our main problems - up to 7,200 gallons per minute, at a pressure of 395 pounds per square inch - in the Navajo Tunnel, we had a mixed face which caused a major problem with our support system. In one of the Navajo Tunnels, there was a major cave-in, when the squeezing shale came in during an attempt to strengthen the support system. Although moving shale was not a constant problem, there were areas where the shale was five to six feet above the spring line.

This paper presents the precise definitions of a number of commonly used subsidence parameters. Using an integrated approach, the parameters were determined for 110 subsidence cases collected from major US coal fields. Attempts were made to establish empirical formulae for the parameters. The results of this study indicate that some traditionally held concepts should be changed.

Today most belt conveyors used for the transportation of bulk solid materials are driven in a centralized way with all drives in one location. The dynamics of these systems has been studied since the early seventies of the previous century and are well understood. Compared to the more conventional belt conveyor system with a centralized drive station positioned at the head and/or tail of the system, a decentralized driven layout with drive stations distributed along the whole length of the belt offers a number of advantages. However, to make a decentralized driven configuration a good alternative to a centralized driven, the system designer will have to balance these benefits with the increased complexity. The full potential of a decentralized driven system can only be realized if the right balance is found between the locally applied drive force and the motion resistances occurring along the system. From previous research it was found that in a multiple driven belt conveyor system the most dominant belt behavior occurs in the belt section between the tensioning device and the first drive station. In this paper different possibilities are analyzed to improve this dominant belt response and optimize the starting behavior. This can be accomplished by changing the predescribed start up profile, starting the drive stations in sequence rather then all at the same time and altering the locations of the drive stations.

Polysaccharides have been widely used as depressants in mineral processing for decades. They constituent one of the most abundant family of biopolymers. However, only a small number of them have been used by industry so far because of a general lack of understanding of interactions between these polymers and minerals. In this work, adsorption tests, electrophoretic mobility measurements, microflotation and fluorescence spectroscopic tests were performed along with computer simulation to explore the mechanistic aspects of guar gum adsorption and conformation on talc as a function of relevant variables such as ionic strength, pH, solvent composition and polymer molecular weight. From microflotation tests, it was found that talc hydrophobicity decreased markedly due to the adsorption of guar gum even at very low concentrations and reached a plateau below moximum adsorption. Guar gum adsorption on talc was found to be not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength, ruling out electrostatic force as controlling factor for adsorption. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Also urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding in preference to electrostatic or hydrophobic force. This information should help toward designing reagents of optimum molecular architecture for efficient depression, dispersion or other such surface modification of particles.

This paper will introduce and discuss a range of techniques that utilise new developments in Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) for the investigation of incidents and accidents in mining environments. The future of mining safety may not be totally led by the demands of the mine operators, but sometimes by the academics, commercial software developers and legal pioneers who generate new ideas and products and set admissibility precedents which may change the way certain traditional investigative operations are performed. In any accident investigation the outcome from the investigating team is often a complex affair and the results of the investigation are often reported in large, convoluted documents. Computer-generated forensic reconstructions allow investigators to present accident scenarios in an accessible and easily understood, visual manner. Surveys in the US have also shown that people have increased recall of computer-generated images over many other forms of evidence. The AIMS Research Unit in the UK have been pioneering the use of Computer Graphics (CG) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology for both industrial and road traffic accident reconstruction. This paper and accompanying presentation will contain examples of forensic reconstructions developed by the authors that explain some of the methodologies used to ensure admissibility of this type of digital evidence. The paper will contain a number of case studies based on UK and International industrial accidents. The paper will focus on how AIMS Research is extending the capabilities of the accident reconstructions created to take advantage of the latest developments in VR technology. As digital technology makes its impact within professional and commercial fields, computer generated forensic reconstructions will form important admissible evidence in the courtrooms of the future. The technology will also make a great impact in the way we train our workforces, with highly visual three-dimensional (3D) interactive training tools becoming the norm. Acceptance by the public, courts and workforce is an important issue, and implementation strategies must be considered carefully.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

"Enhanced heap leaching - Part 1: Insights" (Orr, 2002), different flow and transport phenomena that could significantly reduce leaching recovery were investigated. The combination of such understanding with advanced flow and transport modeling establishes the link between cause and effect, thereby, directing operators to optimal design and construction of new heaps. Modeling of flow and transport in heaps could also point to a unique change in application method or rate that would maximize leaching enhancement of an existing heap under existing situation and leaching history. The use of such a model is cost effective in that it can simulate multiple scenarios of alternative leaching enhancement methods. By simulating a large number of irrigation scenarios, such a model can point to the optimal and/or the most promising alternatives for a particular heap. The authors&apos; simulations concentrate on the effects of changes in application rates and heap design on changes in flow paths and enhanced leaching recovery. Based on such simulations, an intelligent control agent, such as Multiple Resolution Decision-Support System (MRDS) (Meystel and Albus, 2002), could build a new representation of the complex heap-leaching system. And, by learning from historical data and current information, it could provide optimal management of heap leaching and heap decommissioning.

The lithium review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue The estimated consumption of lithium minerals as raw materials to the glass, ceramic and metallurgical industries in 1992 was 85.5 kt (94,200 st). That equates to about 12 kt (13,200 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). An additional 150 kt to 200 kt (165,000 to 220,000 st), or 7.5 kt to 10 kt (8200 to 1100 st LCE), were used in the production of lithium chemicals. The 1992 consumption represents an overall decrease of 3.5 kt (3800 st), or 500 t (550 st) LCE, from 1991. This was a direct result of a worldwide reduction in glass demand due to the economic recession. There are three major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated Ltd. (formerly Lithium Australia Ltd.) in Western Australia and Tantalum Mining Corp. (Tanco) in Manitoba, Canada, both produce spodumene ore. Bikita Minerals, in Zimbabwe, is the largest producer of petalite. Bikita also has the capacity to produce small volumes of spodumene concentrate. The Cyprus Foote spodumene operation at Kings Mountain, NC, ceased production in 1992. It once produced about 2 kt/a (2200 stpy) of "high iron spodumene" for uses other than in the manufacture of lithium chemicals. The lithium products of the major producers are shown in Table 1. The current resources of 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of LCE in the western world will supply demand for more than 50 years.

Bioleaching of solid wastes lithium ion battery industries was carried out in this investigation. A new method for recovery of cobalt, potentially the basis of an economic and environmentally friendly process was examined. The present study was conducted using chemolithotrophic and acidophilic bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and some mixed thiobacilli collected from abandoned mine drainage. These organisms were able to utilize sulfur and ferrous ion as energy source. Bio-dissolution of cobalt was found to be faster than lithium. The effect of initial Fe(II) concentration, initial pH and solid/liquid (w/v) ratio were studied in detail. With increase of time of leaching the dissolution of cobalt was found to be increased and this must be due to competitiveness of the mixed thiobacilli for utilizing the energy source among them. Since the bacteria are belonging to acidophilic group the higher pH studies revealed a decrease trend in metal dissolution. Higher solid/liquid ratio also found to be detrimental for the bacterial activity. It seems bacteria are not resistant to higher concentration of the metal. The optimized conditions for bio-dissolution were sol-id/liquid (w/v) ratio - 10 g/L, initial Fe(II) concentration - 5 g/L, elemental sulfur - 1% (w/v). In the optimized conditions, cobalt dissolution was observed to be about 75 % whereas that of lithium was 15% after 25 days.
