Techniques for dealing with copper-gold ores are reviewed. Cyanide has little selectivity of gold over copper, and depending on the reactivity of the copper minerals cut-off grades for gold recovery by direct cyanidation are generally below 0.5% copper for oxide ores and 1 % for sulfide ores. Non-cyanide gold leachants also tend to be reactive to copper. The cheapest option for sulfidic ores is to produce a flotation concentrate for smelting, while transition ores generally need a sulfidisation pre-treatment. The requirement for the concentrate to have a high enough copper grade to be acceptable to a smelter may compromise copper and gold recovery. This can lead to significant gold grades in the flotation tailing, and copper levels in the tailing that are too high for direct cyanidation to be able to recover the gold. Oxidised ores, flotation tailing or other material not amenable to flotation represent the greatest grey area for gold recovery. Copper removal by acid, alkaline or ferric pre-treatment is possible though not generally used. Cyanide pre-leaching to remove copper, followed by copper and cyanide recovery represents a potential option that has been installed at one Australian gold plant, where copper is recovered onto carbon, ahead of the slower leaching gold. Actual cyanide recovery depends on ore mineralogy, allowing for losses as cyanate, thiocyanate, carbonate and ferrocyanide. Alternative options for gold recovery following cyanide leaching include precipitation, ion exchange and solvent extraction of the gold. Ammonia-cyanide leaching may offer another option for more selective gold dissolution from flotation tailing and oxidised materials. A plant is currently under construction in Mauritania.

The city of Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by miners seeking tin near the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. The rapid development of the city and surrounding area since independence has led to more rapid runoff during rainstorms and to gradual canalisation of the rivers with some restricted sections. The outcome has been more frequent and more severe floods (Abdullah 2006). At the same time the centre of Kuala Lumpur has become a modern inter-national city with tall office buildings, hotels, and shopping centres connected by a network of wide roads and commuter rail systems. With these the cost of dislocation during floods has risen as has the cost of making good damage afterwards. The Government of Malaysia considered these consequences unacceptable and sought ideas from the private sector for a solution. Potential solutions consisted of variations on the themes of bypassing the city centre with a flood relief tunnel or of providing off channel storage or a combination of both. Since under Malaysian law a tunnel cannot be constructed under private property unless this is first purchased or agreement reached with the owner, it was necessary for most of the tunnel alignment to run below existing heavily congested roads. After considering these facts Gamuda Berhad and MMC Berhad, two leading Malaysian development and construction companies, decided to propose to Government an innovative solution in which the tunnel would be used to carry road traffic except during floods.

Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

Solid-state reduction of roast Movat chromite ore with carbon was carried out as a function of the C/FeO ratio at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 900°C. The reduction was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A two¬stage mechanism consisting of the reduction of FeO with carbon monoxide and the regeneration of CO by the oxida¬tion of carbon with CO2 was proposed. The rate-controlling step is the carbon oxidation reaction. A kinetic equation, that of random nucleation, was proposed. The activation energy for the reduction was determined to be 55,800 J/mole and is compared to those activation energies determined for other chromite ores.

In this paper, the compressive strengths, failure modes and acoustic emission behaviors of cubic coal specimens containing bedding planes at various inclinations are considered. Test results showed that the compressive strengths and the modes of failure of coal specimens depend on the inclination of the bedding planes. From the acoustic emission (AE) measurements, the count rate detected through a low-pass window (AE (L)) was compared with that through a high-pass window (AE (H)) in each test. The results of accumulated AE history were compared with AE signatures of others. It is shown that the AE signature of coal depends on the inclination of the bedding planes, and the AE signatures can be classified into three groups. Each group corresponds to a particular mode of failure, namely, slip on the bedding planes, fracture across the bedding planes and fracture extension through the bedding planes. The parameter r, defined as the ratio of AE (L)/ [AE (L) + AE (H)], is plotted against the stress for each test. Test results showed that r also depends upon the inclination of the bedding planes.

This paper presents design and implementation details of a fuzzy-behavior-based controller for an automated excavator. The robotic excavator is equipped with sensors, actuators and an embedded control system. The excavator controller uses neural-networks to interpret forces and torques gathered during the excavation process from bucket-mounted force sensors. Implementation details card experimental results using the fuzzy-behavior-based excavation controller are given for several excavation tasks. These excavation tasks demonstrate some of the complex skills that are essential for an autonomous mining-excavator controller.

Laboratory experiments were performed on a Brazilian diatomite from Bahia State to produce an industrial product for use as a filter aid. Bench and pilot plant tests were conducted consisting of: diatomite desegregation, organic matter and clay removal, filtration, drying and calcination. Calcination temperature and sodium carbonate addition influenced diatomite particle size distribution. Optimum filtration rates for calcined products were obtained at 900°C and 47 min. residence time with 3% (w/w) of sodium carbonate addition, and resultant products met specifications imposed on filter aids.

Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial "mineral" identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike "mineral." In this investigation, the mineralogy of this sheetlike "mineral" was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. One of the objectives of this study was the recovery of this "mineral." The study indicated that it can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecyl-ammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.

The review of mineral activities in Minnesota arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Minnesota continued to lead the nation in iron ore production in 1989 with more than 70% of the market. At no time in the past 50 years has Minnesota's iron ore market share fallen below 50%. 1989 production was provided by six iron ore pellet operations and one high-grade iron ore mine. Most American steel companies are represented in these operations through whole or partial ownerships in Minntac (USS), Minorca (Inland), Eveleth Mines (Armco and Rouge), Hibbing Taconite (Bethlehem), and LTV Steel and National Steel Pellet. A seventh iron ore pellet producer started up in 1989 when Cyprus Minerals acquired the assets of bankrupt Reserve Mining Co. This operation, with first production scheduled for 1990, will be the only non-steel company captive operation in Minnesota. Encouraging minerals development In an attempt to stimulate further and additional mineral development in Minnesota, the state's legislature established a Minerals Coordinating Committee (MCC). This committee is comprised of the Department of Natural Resources-Division of Minerals, the Minnesota Geological Survey, the Natural Resources Research Institute, and the Mineral Resources Research Center. The Committee has sponsored and coordinated various projects. Among these MCC-sponsored projects are glacial drift geochemistry with an emphasis on gold and indicator minerals, accelerated geologic mapping, continued aeromagnetic surveying of Minnesota, greenstone geochemistry, structure and stratigraphy of the Duluth complex, and drill core and exploration data acquisition from past exploration programs. Regarding drill core, the Division of Natural Resources completed construction of its third core library building in Hibbing. These data and core are available for public examination.

This paper is about a horizontally curved conveyor, which carries 6,050 stph of limestone over land from a new quarry to the owner's plant. The conveyor is 5,012 ft long with a horizontal curve radius of5,OOOft Site conditions made a curved conveyor design the most optimal and economic solution. Using our unique custom conveyor calculation program, TKRI was able to accurately model and design the conveyor to properly track the belt and prevent any spillage through the horizontal curve radius. A data monitoring system was installed that allows monitoring of the conveyor both locally and remotely. The remote monitoring allows TKRI to contact the owner for preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance can reduce the conveyor downtime during normal operating hours.

Many coal characteristics affect combustion performance. Mill wear, boiler efficiency and derate, slagging, fouling, and ash collection and removal are only a few of the impacts of coal quality on boiler performance. The ability to assess fuel characteristic impacts on busbar costs is essential, although difficult to obtain. The relationships between coal characteristics and ignitability, operability, slagging, and fouling were investigated. The examination of combustion data/performance from a laboratory study, a boiler simulation system (pilot combustor), and commercial boilers indicated the benefits of burning improved quality coal. The specific effects of cleaning are discussed. A validation of the necessity of commercial-scale and/or pilot-scale testing is presented.

An experimental study of the particle charac¬teristics of the magnesium carbonate crystals formed by the reaction between magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbon¬ate at different temperatures is described. The rate of growth of magnesium carbonate crystals for any constant tempera¬ture is established, and this rate of growth is related to the degree of supersaturation at the given temperature. The activation energy calculated using empirical constants de¬rived from the relationship between the crystal growth rate and supersaturation, is indicative of a surface-reaction mechanism.

Blasting is commonly viewed separately from mechanical handling and crushing. This view is misleading because the degree of fragmentation achieved by blasting can have a significant effect on the efficiency of these processes and, hence, on the overall cost of the mining operation. In this paper, aspects of blasting and crushing and their interaction are examined. A case study is also presented that dramatically illustrates the influence of blast fragmentation on subsequent processing and on the financial implications involved.

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Many, if not most, of today's pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don't have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I'm referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I'm referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of' "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of' when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let's look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site. In this scenario, if you had purchased "occurrence" general liability policies 10 years ago, these 1977 policies would (potentially) apply to the current $2 million cleanup claim. And, the reason is that the "occurrence" leading to the 1987 claim took place in 1977.

The size distribution of coal cut by a mining machine is an important performance factor. It is well established that the main machine system variable that affects product size is the depth of cut. In essence, the greater the amount of coal won by a machine cutting at shallow depths, the greater the proportion of dust and fines produced. Conversely, deep cuts produce less dust and a generally larger product size. When cutting with a rotating drum, as well as with a longwall shearer, the depth of cut always varies from zero in the vicinity of the roof and floor, where most of the dust and fines are produced, to a maximum at mid-drum level. In this paper, minimizing the amount of shallow cutting with a cutting drum is discussed, and the effects of the drum cutting and design parameters on cross-sectional cutting area per revolution are analyzed. This study shows the following: •more shallow cutting occurs during the entry quadrant of a cutting cycle than during pick exit; •the ratio of the projected area of shallow cutting to the total projected area of cutting by a single pick per drum revolution is virtually the same for drums of different radii (however, it decreases as the maximum depth of cut increases); and •for double drums, the use of unequal drum diameters can reduce the production of dust and fines, compared to using drums of the same diameter.

The combined Bootstrap and Capstone deposits, located in the Bootstrap subdistrict (Section 10, T36N, R49E, M.D.B.M., Elko County, Nevada), are approximately 27 miles northwest of Ca-1I: Nevada. The contiguous Bootstrap Capstone deposits are located along the northeastern and northern flanks of Round Mountain, a horst block separated by grabens from the sheep Creek Mountains to the north-northwest and the Tuscarora Mountains to the east. Open-pit-minable gold reserves as of December, 1989, were 13.27 million short tons with an average grade of .057 troy ounces gold per ton and an overall waste-to-ore strip ratio of 2.5:1. Ore zones in Bootstrap are concentrated along north striking high-angle dikes localized along faults, while ore zones at Capstone are strata form and structural, occurring at the Devonian limestone/siliceous sediment interface and in high-angle fault-filling dikes. Pre-ore faulting produced a complex structural setting for Capstone, dominated by strong northwest fault sets cross-cut by northeasterly structures. Alteration associated with both deposits is silicification with a-strong argillic overprint. Dike emplacement, which post-dates silicification, marked the onset of mainstage gold deposition and argillic overprinting of silicified lithologies. Gold displays an affinity for moderately argillized sedimentary and igneous lithologies. Mineralogic and geochemical analyses of rotary percussion drill samples show good correlation between gold, silica, antimony, and arsenic.
