High horizontal stresses were recognized to impact roof stability more than 60 years ago. Since then, numerous measurements associated high horizontal stresses with difficult ground conditions. This paper presents case histories illustrating the practical usage of roof stress determinations for helping assess stability, not only in the case of high horizontal stresses but also of low stresses. Examples are given of high stresses associated with faults, mine design changes, quantification of stress shadow effect, and anistrophy. The paper concludes with a comparative evaluation on the effect of various stress fields on ground support requirements.

Factory beet molasses media were used as cheap sources of sucrose for microbial leaching of Greek nickeliferrous laterites using strains of Penicillium and Aspergillus sp. Nickel recoveries of up to 62% and cobalt recoveries of up to 50% were obtained by leaching in a two-phase system in which bioacids were produced by fungal metabolism in molasses ferrocyanide pretreated media. The addition of potassium ferrocyanide to the molasses substrates prior to leaching was found to have a beneficial effect by increasing the level of citric acid bioproduction, thus improving the leaching efficiency of the fermentation liquid. The metals known to interfere with citric acid production (i.e., Fe, Cu, Ca and Mn) were those most efficiently precipitated. Considering the much lower commercial price of molasses in the industrial market compared to sucrose and glucose carbohydrate media, molasses could prove to be a promising alternative, despite the cost of the required pretreatment.

The Reverse Curve Tunnel Project was located in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado approximately twelve (12) miles east of Glenwood Springs. The Project was one of many being constructed over a period of time by the State of Colorado, Department of Highways to improve Interstate 70 to four lanes as it travels thru the environmentally sensitive Glenwood Canyon. The Project consisted of excavating and concreting a tunnel approximately five hundred fifty (550) feet long, forty two (42) feet wide, and thirty two (32) feet high. The designer was Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas, with geotechnical consultation provided by Woodward Clyde. CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES There were several significant construction challenges presented primarily by the physical location of the Project. In this study each problem will be discussed, as well as how it was overcome by construction methods and/or design requirements. Portal Excavation - One of the most difficult areas of work on the Project consisted of excavation and stabilizing the East and West Portal rock prior to tunnel excavation. The Reverse Curve Tunnel passes through a sheer walled cliff face which is approximately two hundred fifty (250) feet high. Geologically the cliff consists of primarily sedimentary deposits with open, weathered joints and vertical faulting. Mineral liberation modeling can be traced back to the early work 0fA.M. Gaudin up through more recent population balance modeling by R.p. King, J.A. Herbst and G.T. Adel. A more micro-scopic look was taken at the University of Utah in the form of the J.E. Sepulveda and J.D. Miller Pargen model which permits the creation of an arbitrary shape, multiphase particle made up of discrete grains. Recent work on image analysis and tomographic analysis by J.D. Miller and C.L. Lin have laid the experimental ground work for model validation, but until now it hasn't been possible to include the necessary physics of the particle stressing process to allow the development of a 'ffirstprinciples"mode1 which does not presuppose a "mode” of liberation (e.g., random or by detachment). Recent developments in discrete grain breakage (DGB) modeling now make a generalized physics based model feasible. This paper describes current work that is being done to develop a physics based discrete grain liberation (DGL) model. Two-dimensional and three dimensional simulation results exploring the effects of particle size, phase properties and loading type are presented. Relationships between energy based liberation efficiency, degree of random liberation and material properties are identified.

The objective of this unique method is to multiply the advance rate of conventional tunneling while improving both ground control and the safety of the crew. The high advance rate is achieved by concurrent rock excavation and installation of concrete lining at fully synchronized work phases. The novel TACHUSMATIC system consists of a high-production, robotic cutter boom, an automated slip form and continuous mucking and conveying. This novel system utilizes the inherent bearing capacity of the rock that is activated by a small, initial deformation. The supporting resistance is then provided both by the rock mass itself and the pumped in concrete lining. During the hardening of the concrete, the hydraulic cylinders of the TACHUSMATIC automatically apply the appropriate support resistance, thus providing safe ground control. This novel tunneling system is practically a fully automated, fail-safe NATM that does not require highly skilled engineers and crew. The TACHUSMATIC can be used for construction of circular, rectangular and horseshoe-shaped tunnels. When equipped with the Alpine Multi-Tool Miner (MTM) systems, the machine can work in a wide range of ground and rock conditions. The use of novel, diamond-tipped cutter bits (picks) will increase hard rock cutting capabilities and will significantly reduce pick consumption. Because of its moderate cost, the novel system is an economic alternative to conventional tunneling even at short drivages. A new installation is cost-effective for tunnels longer than 750 meters (2,500 ft.) At a typical tunneling project, the cost permeter is about 25% lower than with conventional methods.

This paper describes and demonstrates the application of systems analysis and mathematical modeling techniques in the planning of actual tunnel projects and research and development to improve tunneling techniques. A recently completed tunnel project located in Utah is used as an example. Although cost estimating computer programs are used in tunnel project planning, the introduction of performance modeling, simulating the time to excavate, has added advantages that are explored here. The performance/cost tunneling model (TM) described herein mathematically simulates on a high-speed digital computer the important activities of a number of tunneling techniques accounting for activity interactions, variable external environments, mechanical failure, and other uncertainties. A cost accounting segment is included to facilitate cost-effectiveness comparisons. It is shown that, when combined with informed judgment and appreciation of limitations, the TM can be a useful tool that may help improve tunneling operations and cost estimation, for example, by achieving more balanced system designs or bounding the performance/cost implications of geologic and other uncertainties. Ultimately, this might lead to more competitive bids and greater profits. The need for systems analysis and modeling in tunneling research and development (R&D) is well recognized and documented.(1-5) In R&D one must seek broadly useful solutions to the basic problems of face fragmentation, materials handling, ground support, and environmental control. These solutions must take account of the interdependence of these elements and, for a variety of ground conditions, the limitations or constraints that any innovation in one element may impose on total system performance and cost. The Misima deposit is on Misima Island in the Lousaide Archipelago, 240 km east-southeast of the Papua New Guinea mainland, and 600 km east of Port Morseby. Misima is a narrow mountainous island 40 km long and up to 10 km wide. The highest point is 1035 m above sea level. Gold mineralization is restricted to the eastern and less rugged third of the island. The Melanesian population lives in coastal villages. Subsistence agriculture is the main activity, although copra and cocoa are grown in plantations on the eastern and southern coasts. Prior to 1950, mining was important in the economy of the island. Climate is tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. Tropical cyclones occur about every 10 years (Fig. 1).

The Niblack polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, approximately 50 km southwest of Ketchikan. The property hosts a number of polymetallic volcanogenic sulfide occurrences within the folded Lookout rhyolite volcanic succession. The Lookout deposit is the primary focus of current resource delineation and contains an indicated resource of 4,136,000 tonnes at 1.13% Cu, 2.32 g/t Au, 2.27% Zn, 38.70 g/t Ag and an inferred resource of 1,736,000 tonnes at 1.09% Cu, 1.77 g/t Au, 2.02% Zn, and 25.52 g/t Ag as of March 2011. Sulfide mineralization is interpreted to have formed sub-seafloor, within permeable felsic fragmental volcanic rocks. Sulfide minerals of economic interest include chalcopyrite and Fe-poor, Zn-rich sphalerite. Of considerable importance, the Lookout deposit contains elevated gold that occurs as inclusions within the base metal sulfides.

INTRODUCTION With the world media full of predictions that the price of gold will quadruple in three years (Maybury, R.J., 1988), and with financial forecasters and strategists touting opportunities to make 400% in gold (Skousen, M., 1988), explorationists and entrepreneurs are scurrying to find enough gold to feed the global gold fever created. At the same time, gold deposits in the United States and other developed and intermediate countries are becoming less attractive because of environmental restrictions, radical reductions in tax incentives, and depleting reserves, causing people in the mining industry to begin looking at opportunities for foreign investment in gold mining concessions in lesser developed countries (LDCs). Meanwhile, LDCs are responding with chamber-of-commerce aplomb in marketing their opportunities. In the face of all this frenzy and hype, targeting gold mining concessions in LDCs for foreign investment may be done more objectively by employing a systematic approach. For this paper the SHOP rating system (Corbin, R.K., 1987), which considers factors of the LDC's stability, hospitability, ore occurrence, and profitability potential is used. The result is that a tiny banana-growing republic in Central America, first discovered by Columbus and named the "Rich Coast'' because of the many gold adornments worn by its Indians, has been rediscovered and emerges as a classic LDC gold target.

A series of numerical experiments were performed in order to elucidate the stress distribution, fracture strength and mineral liberation potential in single specimens of rock during crushing. Fracture strength was shown to reduce under eccentric loading conditions. Similarly, the presence of inclusions, both hard and soft, reduced the fracture strength. The predicted crack paths indicate that mineral liberation is unlikely to be preferential.

Water is still the most economical and popular means of controlling dust underground. It is a process that captures dust by bringing water droplets into intimate contact with coal particles. Wetting agents, also known as surfactants, can be added to greatly facilitate such a process since they tend to reduce the interfacial tension between the coal particles (usually hydrophobic) and the liquid. The surfactants used in the study were first chosen on the basis of their HLB (Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance) value, and later tested in order to select the right type and amount of surfactants to give the best performance. Both static and dynamic tests were later conducted using different types of surfactants to examine their respective wetting effectiveness on coal particles. Experimental results show close correlation with the theoretically calculated collection efficiency that is based on a horizontal tunnel and a solid-cone water spray.

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems in use and development are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple- unit continuous haulage, extensible and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the US Bureau of Mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.

Although it may be perfectly acceptable to neglect the belt's elastic behavior for many conveyor designs, this can lead to disastrous consequences for others. So how can a designer know in advance if a dynamic analysis is required? Unfortunately, in many cases it is impossible to foresee or predict dynamic problems prior to performing the actual analysis. However, a basic understanding of the principles of conveyor dynamics, as well as knowledge regarding common problem areas, can significantly help the designer make more educated decisions during the initial design stage. This paper will demonstrate how static calculations alone can incorrectly represent the true behavior of the conveyor system. It will also discuss the importance of correctly sizing and locating the take-up system to provide the most economical conveyor design. The use of capstans will also be discussed followed by two examples demonstrating their proper operation.

INTRODUCTION Soft ground tunnels may be above the ground water table or they may be subaqueous. The ground may be clays, silts, sands, gravels, glacial deposits, boulder tills, and any of these in any combination. Because of the relatively low strength and deformability of soils, difficulties often arise in soft ground tunnelling. These soil characteristics and resultant tunnelling difficulties, have had a direct influence on the development of "Lovat" Tunnel Boring Machines. We have been required to recognize and adapt to unusual ground conditions and to follow through with design, fabrication, and field maintenance to ensure dependable, trouble-free operation. The basic "Lovat" machine is a fully shielded, wheel-type with the cuttinghead driven by a monorace type bearing with gear drive incorporated in the bearing. Mechanical innovations have been added to the basic machine which complement the resources of manpower, equipment, and materials available to the contractor for a specific operation. The leaching and bulk decomposition of sulfide minerals is of enormous commercial importance in several areas of the minerals industry. These include: direct leaching of ores or concentrates for the recovery of the contained metal values; decomposition of sulfides to recover associated values such as encapsulated gold; and the potentially hazardous oxidation of sulfides in waste disposal facilities. A significant challenge to successful future developments in these areas is to improve our fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of the chemical, electrochemical, and bacterially-mediated interactions between sulfides and aqueous solutions. The paper summarizes current understanding of these mechanisms, and discusses promising new directions for research.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The US was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1990. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st), including 565 kt (662,800 st) of boric oxide (B2O3) in 1990, according to US Bureau of Mines estimates. Total value amounted to $404 million. This was slightly higher in production than 1989 but down in value, reflecting a softening in boron product prices. Total world production of boron mineral concentrate and chemical tonnage in 1990 was estimated at 3 Mt (3.3 million st), which corresponds to about 1.3 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO,. World production in 1990 was about the same as in 1989.

Due to the availability of user-friendly microcomputer based packages, the use of simulation is increasing.. Users have however encountered problems inherent to the structure of sequential-modular simulators. These are the difficulties associated with estimating parameters for arbitrary' models and the solution of design and optimization problems. The implementation of an optimization routine in the simulator MicroSim has facilitated the solution of such problems. The literature indicates that more efficient numerical techniques for solving optimization problems than those presently used in MicroSim are available. These techniques, together with user-interfaces which allow such problems to be specified easily by users, will result in the development of simulators much more powerful than existing ones.

The issues involved in mine closure are usually complex, and the risks are significant. Although environmental risks are paramount, other issues such as safety, community, legal, fiscal and technical factors need to he taken into account. This paper describes a simple empirical model based on the concept of the closure risk factor, which will enable decision-makers to analyze the mine closure risks at any site, regardless of the complexity of the issues and the scale, scope and location of the operation. The model enables all the issues to be captured and their individual and collective risk quantified. A number of case studies in Australia and the Pacific that illustrate the usefillness of the model are presented.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.
