The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.

This paper outlines a proposed research project to investigate secondary sulphide ignitions. Sulphide dust explosions have resulted in loss of production and considerable capital and equipment replacement cost in Canadian mines. The practical application of laboratory test results to actual mine situations presents a complex problem and is a field requiring immediate investigation. The factors contributing to the outbreak of sulphide ignitions are not clearly understood. This indicates a need for future research to study the influence of blasting parameters, exhaust temperatures, and dust characteristics on secondary ignitions at source. The aim is to establish realistic quantities for each of the parameters and develop a model that will incorporate field and laboratory quantities. It may be possible to predict outcomes of sulphide ignitions when the parameters are known. It is also planned to study the techno-economic feasibility of the preventive and control methods. One aspect of planned future research requires quantification of some terms by obtaining measurements of pollutant concentrations and size distribution of the airborne dust in an underground environment immediately after a main blast. A blast-proof aerosol sampling package to measure the source term will be designed. This sampling package will consist of a sampling section and a shield which will be capable of withstanding a blast explosion. The accuracy in measuring the variables and combination of variables will be the main focus in this proposed study.

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated field program over a 37-month period (April 1978 - May 1981). This project was part of a much larger study to determine the economic feasibility of expanding the open-pit, mine-mill operation 10-fold to 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd). The resource project included more than 120 km (74 miles) of core drilling and 64 km (40 miles) of drill rig access way construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, and other related activities. The Los Bronces deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. The mineralization is hosted by intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Various stages of erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper are present. Drill hole indicated geologic reserves are estimated at 1.3 Gt (1.4 billion st), averaging 0.81% copper and 0.016% molybdenum at a cutoff grade of 0.6% copper equivalence decreasing to 0.25% over the life of the mine. Trace amounts of silver are also present.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system that is based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural-network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The first successful control loop involved controlling the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The resulting improvements in the control of the circuit resulted in savings of $31,000 per month. Although it was the primary goal of the system, supervisory control of the preconditioning circuit was not achieved. However, information gained during the modeling suggested process modifications that resulted in cost savings of $54,000 per month in the preconditioning circuit.

This paper presents the latest developments in the flotation model being developed collaboratively between the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia, and the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. It includes: - characterisation of flotation cells using the bubble surface area flux, Sb; - relationship of Sb to the overall flotation rate constant; - determination of the froth recovery factor; - evaluation of ore floatability; - modelling of entrainment - development of the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR); - use of the model in design and optimization of flotation plants; and - current and future work.

This paper deals with the various electro- and biochemical mechanisms involved in the bioleaching of multisulfide minerals such as those containing copper-lead-zinc and copper-nickel-iron. Galvanic series for sulfide minerals consisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pentlundite, and pyrrhotite in an acid bacterial leaching system is illustrated, and the role of relative electrochemical activity on selective dissolution is discussed. Typical leaching results are shown to illustrate the practical applicability of galvanic effects in bioleaching of multisulfides. Attachment of Thiobacillus fewooxidans onto chalcopyrite and sphalerite mineral substrates is illustrated through scanning electron micrographs. The role of high-metal-tolerant, specially adapted strains in the leaching of multimetal concentrates is also outlined.

Plane failure in rock and soil slopes is usually caused by the intersection of a discontinuity plane with a slope face. Normally, these discontinuities are weaker than the surrounding intact rock and provide a surface along which movement can occur. The discontinuities are typically analyzed to determine the stability of a particular slope. One problem that arises when evaluating the stability of a planar feature is that the method for planar analysis is two-dimensional and has difficulty dealing with planes that are oblique to the slope face. Several researchers have stated in the past that planar failures are a special case of wedge failure. Wedge failures occur when two planar discontinuities intersect in an unfavorable manner. Sliding can occur along the intersection of the planes. Wedge failures are very common in rock slopes and can often be problematic. Wedge stability analysis methods are typically three-dimensional and can analyze planar features that are very oblique to the slope face. Wedge failure analysis can also be used to determine the stability of planar features with good success. One advantage to using wedge analysis over plane analysis is that a tension crack can be both non-vertical and oblique to the slope face in the wedge analysis. This allows the engineer to more closely match field conditions. It also negates the need for the engineer to have two separate software packages to analyze a single slope, saving both time and money.

Bacterial oxidation of gold-encapsulating sulfide minerals in low-grade refractory ores was investigated over a period of one year. Crushed ore samples were held in wet, bacteria-inoculated, aerated columns. Sulfide mineral oxidation data were correlated with subsequent gold cyanide extractabilities. Experimental results for both sulfide conversion and gold extraction were compared with a biooxidation kinetics model that incorporates rock size, mineral grain size, and heterogeneous pyrite reaction kinetics. Using the model, extrapolations were made over three years for biooxidation of ore in large stockpiles. Ferric ion (oxidant) diffusion in the solution-filled pores of the rock matrix does not control the biooxidation kinetics of ore crushed to -25 mm.

In response to concerns over the impact of mining on the hydrologic balance at the Navajo Mine in northwestern New Mexico, a recharge study was conducted using a chloride mass- balance approach. Impact of mining on annual recharge volume was assessed by comparing pre- and post-mining recharge values. The mean regional recharge rate for reclaimed ground (weighted by acreage) is 1.02 mm/a (0.04 in. per year) or twice that for undisturbed ground, 05 mm/a (0.02 in. per year). Comparison of regional recharge volumes for identical areas shows mining increases recharge 92%. The increase is only 80% if no closed depressions are constructed during reclamation. However, the increased rates are so low that there should be no detrimental impact on regional water resources. The chloride method proved useful at Navajo Mine and should succeed at others surface coal mines as well.

High pressure roll grinding (HPGR) is a mature but still expanding comminution technology. In the metals mining industry, HPGR is slowly gaining acceptance as a cost-efficient, high-throughput alternative for plant optimization. The increasing need to treat ores with progressively lower grades, complex mineralogies, refractory metal occurrence and variable rock types requires an energy-efficient comminution technology that reduces metallurgical problems inherent in conventional crushing and grinding, while stabilizing leach and flotation circuits and increasing metals extraction. This paper will summarize our latest HPGR pilot test results for gold and copper projects in the United States and South America and their confirmation through the first HPGR operation in copper mining. This paper will also stress the use of the high pressure grinding roll as a metallurgical tool. The application of HPGR for the treatment of heap leach SX-EW ores, semi-refractory gold ores, waste rock material and concentrator feeds will be illustrated.

A Simulation/Animation Model (SAM) with several unique features has been developed for continuous mining in room-and-pillar production systems. Initial cut data are generated by the program based on a short list of general section parameters, and is graphically displayed on the screen for checking and editing. This portion of the program includes several intelligent features. For example, a different cut sequence will be generated for uni-directional section ventilation than for bi-directional flow. Once the data are accepted, the entire simulation may be viewed in animation. Effectively, much of the data are checked visually by watching the actions of the mining equipment. Following the simulation, results are summarized as bar and pie charts, as well as printed output. In addition to the extensive use of graphics, the program contains several advances in simulation techniques as well.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimise the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focussed on ore characterisation and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blastability indices as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model however it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both Brownfield and Greenfield projects on the PPRust operation.

INTRODUCTION Selective Reduction of Nickel in Oxidized Ores Oxidized nickel ores, either garnieritic or lateritic, contain much more iron than nickel. The regular carbon reduction in an electric furnace is operated in such a manner that the greater part of iron oxides is reduced simultaneously with nickel oxide, resulting in a low nickel content ferronickel. In order that the nickel content of residual slag may be suitably low, -excess carbon must be fed so that the carbon content of the ferronickel thus obtained is that of casting iron. The metal also contains other impurities such as silicon, chrome, etc. In order to convert the casting iron into slightly carburized ferronickel with high nickel content, the greater part of the carbon and more than half the iron contained therein must be oxidized by means of oxygen. Energy is thus consumed as carbon, and power to reduce iron oxides, and more energy is consumed as oxygen to re-oxidize the iron contained. This method can be economically adopted for nickel ores with grades ranging around 2. 5 to 370, but it gets excessively costly when nickel grade falls below these values. This is why, for nickel ores with low nickel grades and high iron content, studies were conducted to develop a selective reduction process which, while reducing only a small part of the iron oxide, would provide efficient reduction of nickel oxide. As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, abetter means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas andwas called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' Ø X 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.C., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" Ø X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. The methods of burst control treated in the authors' very informative paper have been applied in the Ruhr Coalfield, Germany, for more than 20 years and have proved to be highly effective. It might be interesting here to mention a few experiences: The symptoms of critical stresses when drilling with small diameters ("test drilling") are essentially the same as described. However, we consider the situation safe if these symptoms occur beyond a certain distance ahead of the face. That safety distance equals three times the seam thickness plus the daily advance. It is the total seam thickness that counts, not merely the mined portion. Critical stresses within the safety distance are dissolved by so-called destressing measures: drilling with heavier equipment, blasting, or water infusion. To avoid bump initiation, the destressing operations should begin at the sides of the stressed zone rather than in the middle. As to water injection, there are two different principles. If the situation is critical already, high pressures are applied for hydraulic fracturing. If the stresses still allow to drill deep holes, the fluid pressure is kept low and acts for a longer time. This is to make the coal break successively instead of violently - a long-term precaution. When the stresses are very high, destressing is the most appropriate means. We mostly drill with 95 mm-diam (3.7 in.- diam). The techniques in detail are somewhat complex and subject to modifications. But the general idea is to accomplish burst prevention by controlling the potential burst situations.

English China Clays, the world's largest producer of China Clay, has its main production capacity in the South-West of England, where a complex of pits, refining plants, dryers and ports covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometres. The possibility of a computerised information network was first considered in 1980. The system was required to provide information at the central level and also at local plant level to improve co-ordination and control. Immediate access by any authorised user, and flexibility of interrogation were important aims. A small micro-based prototype system was implemented in 1981, and later that year development of the mainframe system commenced. This latter system will provide at least one terminal in every works location and will allow inter-communication of laboratory test data as well as detailed stock levels and production data. An integrated system for order processing will allow stock levels to be monitored in relation to anticipated requirements. The system has been developed by the Data Processing Department using the IDMS database package running on an ICL ME29 mainframe. It was decided to use microcomputers as terminals, which although more complicated because of protocol emulation allows stand-alone applications to be run on the same equipment. Those applications concerning Production Planning are outlined in the paper. Communication on the network is by synchronous transmission over dedicated lines. All data is stored on the central database with terminals accessing it in a star configuration. The system is currently partially implemented with 30 available screens at 18 separate worksites.
