The characteristics of mine airstreams, such as their magnitude in the time and frequency domain and their spatial distribution, as defined by isovels, must be considered when making a measurement. The possibility for erroneous measurements is greatly increased when fixed- point sensors for mine monitoring systems are used. However, an a priori understanding of the airstream characteristics can be used to reduce the possibility of erroneous readings. This paper describes the problem, presents data to illustrate the nature of the problem, and provides recommendations for alleviating the problem.

Cost reduction programs can focus on total cost or unit cost, but unit cost is usually the principal objective. The production cost per unit is: [Unit cost = Total cost Production volume] Consequently, any activity that reduces the total cost or increases the production volume will reduce the unit cost. Production volume is increased by (1) maximizing the availability of the production equipment and (2) maximizing equipment performance during periods of operation. Most operations managers routinely focus on volume because the factors influencing volume are generally well understood and congruent with the managers' technical skills. In fact, production volume (as a percentage of maximum achievable capacity) is widely recognized as one of the most significant measures of operational performance.

The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring, system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system's design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

In April 1982, the contracting Companies, ABV of Sweden and Hoyer-Ellefsen of Norway forming the Consorcio Escandinavo Agoyan, signed the contract for the construction of the civil works of the Agoyan Hydroelectric Project, located in Ecuador, South America. The project is located in the Andes mountain region of Ecuador - one of the smaller countries in this part of the world, located on the Pacific Coast. The contract was signed with the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificación (INECEL), a public institution in charge of the development of all major energy producing projects in Ecuador, for a value of approximately US$ 120,000,000. The contract's main elements are - Concrete gravity dam with a total volume of approximately 210,000 cu m. In designing a gold extraction circuit utilising carbon­in-pulp (CIP) technology a number of process options can be considered. These include various combinations of leach or pre-leach, CIP or carbon-in-leach (CIL) and conventional counter-current or carousel CIP (or CIL) circuits. Factors affecting the process selection include the project's sensitivity to capital and working costs, the project life, and the mineralogy and head grade. Each process option has it's own advantages and disadvantages. This paper compares both the financial and technical aspects of the flow sheet options. The flow sheet, design aspects and operating performance of Anglogold's West Wits No. 2 and 3 Plants which are leach, pump-cell circuits are described.

Phase 1 of the second line of the Cairo Metro includes approximately 5.83km, of double track tunnels excavated in water bearing sand of the Nile flood plain. Closed face bentonite slurry shield tunnel boring machines 9.43m in diameter were used. State-of-the-art technology was used in TBM operations and guidance, with surface settlements averaging less than 14mm, and alignment deviations averaging less than 25mm. Production rates up to 580m/month were achieved, with average production of 4.8m/shift, 13.4m/day and78m/week. The completed tunnels, lined with precast concrete segments, are completely watertight under 20m of water pressure.

Semiautogenous grinding (SAG) operators have been realizing the very significant impact of fresh feed particle size distribution on the mill grinding capacity. In actual practice, this impact may be quite difficult to assess because of the natural process variability that may also involve- concurrently other critical factors such as ore hardness. Recognizing the limitations of the empirical approach, the current publication proposes the use of mathematical models and simulators to explore and assess the net effect of feed particle size only, independent of any other factors. The simulation analysis here reported provides a basis to claim that the size distribution of the particles being ground (simply characterized by a % - 2" or similar measurement) is one of the most relevant controlling variables of the overall mill performance, regardless of the SAG circuit configuration.

In this paper, the old and the new commercially available reagent chemistries for the improved flotation of sulfide minerals will be summarized. The reagent classes discussed are those that meet three criteria: 1) they are being commercially used and/or large scale plant tested in North America in the last few years; 2) they are clearly different in chemical structure than commonly used commercial reagents of the last few decades and are not simply mixtures of existing reagents and/or simple changes in cation, alkyl group size, etc. and 3) the structural formulae are clearly specified in the public literature.

The theory, definition and practical application of cutoff grades have evolved over a long period. This evolution is reflected in the continuing flow of papers on this and other related matters though the rate has varied as new ideas and theories have become understood and applied in practice. Papers by Lane(l) in 1964 and Taylor(-2)- in 1972 provided landmarks in the understanding and general communication of cutoff grade theory and its application. The reasons for the continuing interest in cutoff grades are obvious. Too high a cutoff can reduce the mineral recovered and possibly the life of a deposit. Too low a cutoff would reduce the average grade (and hence profit) below acceptable levels. This paper provides a brief overview of existing cutoff grade theory and some particular aspects of its application.

During the last years, using modular computer models on the software and distributed computer capacities on the hardware side has become quite common in the mining industry. When tackling real mining problems under the condition of heterogeneous systems, however, some problems become obvious: the incompatibility of the heterogeneous platforms in connection with the heterogeneously structured information and the necessity of interpreting the data. Knowledge based approaches are employed for solving different planning problems in the field of mining industry. The main problems here consist in the knowledge representation and data acquisition. Starting point of the investigation form classifications of mining planning problems and the corresponding models which can be transformed into information models for evaluation. With help of an expert system a practical solution is represented. Distributed systems with mobile computing and communication facilities for immediate access can be used as an additional support for planning and processing. On the base of public or private computer networks (including mobile networks) the foundation is given for a computer supported treatment of planning tasks. Additionally the use of teleworking scenarios in regions of mine planning and data collection in geological applications is prepared. Foundation forms a workflow system on an object-oriented distributed platform.

A plant trial was conducted at the Paddy's Flat plant of Dominion Mining Limited with the aim of comparing the ef evenness of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide as leaching oxidants. The Paddy's Flat plant is designed such that the leach train can be divided into two parallel streams, allowing the same or lurry to be eated in two identical trains. By effectively ehminatmg the influence of the ore variations on the results subtle differences in the performance of the two reagents hav been identified. . . The results of the plant trial indicate that the two reagents act m different ways, and that each may be more suitable than the other _for _the treatment of certain types of ore. In some cases a co bmation of the two reagents may be the most cost effective option. . or t e same chemical conditions in the leach pulp, including dissolved oxygen levels , the reagents achieve different gold leaching rates, and in some cases different ultimate leach extraction.

This paper will discuss the Final Tunnel Linings which were placed in 6700m of a 2.32m inside diameter precast concrete lined interceptor sewer tunnel in Staten Island, New York. Two methods were employed to install the final tunnel linings. One method involved forming and placing a polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete cunnette invert, followed by an arch pour. The second method involved the jacking of reinforced concrete pipe into the tunnel, followed by a low density cellular concrete backfill grout. These two methods will be described and compared.

The hierarchical relationship between three broad kinds of grinding models for a spatially homogeneous, linear, time-invariant batch grinding system are first established. Limiting and asymptotic arguments for arriving at approximate but simpler models are employed in all three cases. These parsimonious models -provide alternate and, in some respects, more incisive and convenient tools for the analyses of grinding processes and simulation of comminution circuits. In the discrete-size, discrete- time class of models, a reduced mill matrix is derived, which is seemingly adequate for those grinding circuits whose identification otherwise is difficult because of limitations on the quantity of data and its quality. In discrete-size, continuous-time types of models, parameter lumping has been employed for obtaining a G-H solution which is quite accurate and exceptionally useful for graphical display of data, model verification, and parameter estimation and simulation. In continuous-size, continuous-time models, a similarity transformation is used for solving the integrodifferential equation of grinding. This solution provides a unified framework for a number of apparently diverse empirical grinding phenomena such as self-preserving behavior of ground particle size distributions and energy laws.
