The wet process is the most commonly used worldwide for phosphoric acid (PA) production, in which phosphate rock (PR) is reacted with strong acid mainly sulfuric acid. This work aims on studying the rare earth elements (REEs) distribution during the production of phosphoric acid using different qualities of phosphate through various industrial technologies. At the onset of this work, the process started with 12 samples of PR, PA, and phosphogypsum (PG) being taken simultaneously from two different Moroccan basins (Ouled Abdoun mine represented by K09 and Gantour mine depicted by G10, G20, BG) and various production lines at two processing platforms (Jorf Lasfar and Safi). Afterward, collected samples were prepared and analyzed for REE characterization using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Based on the analysis results, a transfer factor ( TFX) was introduced with the aim of gauging the REE distribution between PA and PG. The results showed that the total concentration of REEs in different phosphate qualities ranged from 411 to 631 ppm; the major part of this concentration was attributed to the four elements: Y, La, Ce, and Nd which constitute more than 77%. The REE distribution between PA and PG depends on neither the phosphate quality nor the industrial technology used since that the distribution results showed that 55 up to 66% of the initial REEs in phosphate rock ended up in the PG. The behavior of each REE was common except for the element scandium, which transferred mainly to the phosphoric acid.

A panel discussion on carbon-in-pulp processing of gold and silver ores was one of the highlights of the 1981 AIME Annual Meeting in Chicago. The session generated considerable interest and discussion among panelists and the audience. For those unable to attend the panel, the program was recorded and the discussion appears in this two-part report. The panel was co-chaired by Robert S. Shoemaker, vice president of San Francisco Mining Associates, and Laurence D. Hartzog, principal engineer with Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc., San Francisco, CA. Panel members included: George Potter, consultant, Tucson, AZ; Kenneth B. Hall, metallurgical superintendent, Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD; and Donald M. Duncan, resident manager, Pinson Mining Co., Winnemucca, NV. There have been several types of carbon-in-pulp adsorption vessels in use, such as the Dorr-type agitator, the simple propeller agitated tank, the Pachuca tank, and, lately, the draft tube-type of agitated tank. Which one of these is best and why? Potter: On the selection of the most appropriate adsorption vessel, there is a considerable difference of opinion that stems largely from the fact that every ore is different. The mesh of grind, the pulp solids, and the apparent viscosity of the pulp as caused by its clay content and chemical conditions all differ. The traditional Dorr agitator with the slow speed center sweep and either peripheral or center column air lifts has worked quite well on the finer grinds of all minus 65 and probably 70-80% minus 200 mesh. Pachuca tanks have also been successful and they may be capable of handling a coarser feed than the traditional Dorr tank. One uranium mill, for example, handles minus 28 mesh sandstone ore in a Pachuca. The most recent development and one that commands consideration is the draft tube agitator in which there is a turbine which closely fits inside a draft tube. Velocity in the tube is carefully calculated to avoid undue shear and thus abrasion of the carbon. The objective in all cases, of course, is to mix the granular carbon, which is typically 6 x 16 mesh, very gently but thoroughly in a slurry with minimum carbon abrasion. I do not know that there is one outstanding choice just yet and I have been unable so far to get information on C-I-P service for ore grinds as coarse as 35 mesh. Duncan: The major advantage of draft tube-type is the ease of startup. At the Pinson plant we installed draft tube-type agitators but it is too early to quote experience with them. We also haven't operated long enough to determine just what our carbon loss is. The advantage, of course, in the draft tube design is that it requires only about one-third the horsepower input of a conventional agitator. If it has no other advantages, it has that. Hall: The type of vessel most suitable for C-I-P adsorption depends on the type of ore treated and the prevailing operating conditions. In most cases, a deep tank with turbine-type mechanical agitator and low speed tip velocities would be satisfactory. Turbine-type impellers give a positive type of agitation which assures optimum ion contact and reduces short circuiting. Thorough aeration is possible with an air sparge properly located. A mechanical agitator can easily be started up after an outage, but it is usually necessary to drain and wash out a Dorr rake-type or Pachuca before restarting. The turbine-type impeller requires more power, but maintenance costs are negligible if rubber covered impellers are used. Carbon losses are minimal. In smaller plants, Pachuca type agitators provide adequate aeration and agitation. Bob Polak, Occidental Minerals (from the floor): Mr. Hall, you favor the mechanical-type agitator with the preface that the proper design is critical. Could you elaborate on this for us? Hall: The most important thing is low tip speed to prevent carbon attrition. I think the impeller should be sized so that you get a good sweeping action toward the bottom of the tank, across its bottom, up the sides, and back to the center. The advantage of the draft tube is that you get a more positive agitation and you probably get improved aeration too. Polak: Do you know of anyone using an upflow mechanical agitator rather than a downflow unit? Hall: I think that Bob Wilson at Custom Equipment has designed one where he has located the sparge directly beneath the impeller. The air bubbles are broken up by the impeller as the slurry passes through it. The slurry flows upward, outward, down the sides, and, again, back to the center of the tank. I don't know that any tanks of this design are in commercial use. Hans Von Michaelis, Randol International (from the floor): A question to any of the panelists on flat bottom versus conical bottom Pachucas. Hall: I would say the conical bottom would be most suitable in most cases. Some plants have experienced problems with flat bottom Pachucas in that they have a tendency to sand in on the sides of the tank so only the center of the tank is active. Duncan: With our draft tube tank we placed an inverted cone in the center of the tank bottom and blanked off the bottom comer around the circumference of the tank to facilitate movement of the pulp. Other than that, as far as conical bottom tanks are concerned, I'm generally opposed to them because of the cost and height differential. Larry Kramer, Kennecott Minerals Co. (from the floor): Mr. Duncan, you mentioned that the draft tube-type could be agitated with about one-third the horse-power applied to a conventional propellor agitated tank. I have trouble trying to pin down that kind of number. Could you give a bit of rationale as to why that mechanism has a lower horsepower requirement? Duncan: I think it has to do with the fact that below the propeller you have straightening vanes. The pulp, which is flowing vertically downward, is turned and flows upward again without any recirculation. You have an inherently less horse-power requirement in that type of tank. The one-third horsepower requirement is a number I obtained from Lightnin, which supplied us with details of the draft tube. There is probably much more recirculation with a conventional impeller type that is wasted motion. Potter: Last week I saw some agitators in South Africa with short draft tubes and actual turbine-type impellers. This plant was handling 200 kt of ore per month. The tanks were flat bottomed, and the agitation appeared to be quite satisfactory.

The use of service variables in geostatistics (grade-thickness) is common in industry when developing block grade models and geologic resource estimates. This is particularly true in the case of sedimentary and strata-bound-type deposits. The approach has proven merits when assessing ore reserves. However, there are cases where its application for preliminary data analysis produces biased estimates. One such case is encountered in uranium disequilibrium studies. This paper demonstrates the inadequacy of service variables when performing uranium disequilibrium studies. Disequilibrium analysis is a necessary pre-processing step when radiation counts are used as raw data to calculate uranium reserves. Typically, a probe is used to obtain the gamma counts from open drill holes. These counts are then regressed (and corrected) against chemical assays obtained from core samples. During this process, the grade-thickness variable produces an optimistic image of the relationship between probe grades and chemical (true) grades, causing overestimation of the final geologic resource. The problem is analyzed through a case study.

Never increase, reduce, or remove ventilation without unquestionable, compelling reasons. This rule applies every day as well as when fighting fire, attempting to find survivors, or recovering the mine. Right now in some mine a miner is adjusting a regulator in one place to get more air into another. The chances are the desired result will be achieved. Has the miner done a good thing? NO! Solving the immediate problem reinforces the belief he or she can do it again. That "again" might be, to give but one of many examples, the explosion in Greenwich No. 1 Mine. Robbing the proverbial Peter can be the prelude to disaster in a mine. Reducing the airflow is a common practice when fighting a mine fire. In fact, some people have been taught to do that at MSHA's academy. People who believe that to be proper must be people who never experienced a fire. To fight most fires you have to scramble to get enough air. An explosion demands totally different "thinking". If people are soon to go into the mine, DON'T adjust the ventilation. If teams are in the mine, each affected area must be explored or sealed before making any ventilation change.

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. Fall of ground accidents continue to be a source of injury in underground metal mines. MSHA accident statistics indicate that most rock fall accidents occur at a new face where drilling and blasting methods are used. Removing loose rock by scaling is imperative to removing the potential for rock fall injury. Detection of potentially loose rock could improve the scaling process and result in fewer rock falls. Infrared thermal imaging cameras were investigated as far back as 1966 as a tool for loose rock detection. Early on it was clear that sensitivity (e.g. detectable temperature increment) is a key factor in this application. Both pixel resolution and temperature resolution have greatly improved with modern instruments. This paper describes an evaluation of modern infrared thermal imaging camera technology to detect loose rock conditions at six underground metal mines in the western U.S. It was found that thermal images provide a high resolution visual discrimination between loose rock and intact rock. However, detecting loose rock was difficult in cases where the rock and ventilation air were at the same temperature. Loose rock was detected when rock was both warmer and cooler than the ventilation air temperature. Warm rock with cool ventilation air provided the best conditions for detection.

As we move towards the 21st Century there are several factors that will influence the markets and processing requirements for industrial minerals. Traditional markets for many industrial minerals in the developed world are frequently stagnant or decreasing because of their maturity or due to environmental factors such as reclamation, recovery of byproducts, and recycling. Some industrial minerals are greatly affected by these factors, while others are either immune to or have adapted successfully to meet these challenges. In the developing countries of the world, there is rapid market growth and resource exploitation. The future of specific mineral commodities in several markets will be discussed.

"Usage of Supercritical CO2 in place of high pressure freshwater has proven to be a potential breakthrough in the technique of fracturing. Tapping of carbon footprints from feasible sources like industries can be used to manufacture Supercritical CO2 required for fracking. Supercritical CO2, being less viscous than water, creates complex and coherent micro-fractures which can connect many more natural fractures greatly, increasing maximally the fractures’ conductivity leading to an increment in production. The better clean-up property of Supercritical CO2 provides auxiliary benefits of immediate evaluation of fracture zones, usage of an optimized quantity of mesh proppant and elimination of the need of swabbing. Also, Coal has a stronger affinity for CO2 than for CH4. When CO2 is present, CH4 on coal is replaced by CO2. This also ensures rigorous recovery of gas from the coal beds. Use of Supercritical CO2 will obliterate many problems as the CO2 used for fracturing is either sequestered beneath the crust or is recovered at the surface and reused. Therefore, injecting CO2 into coalbeds achieves not only enhanced CBM recovery, but also greenhouse sequestration underground. INTRODUCTION Coalbed Methane At various times in the geologic past, earth had dense forests in low-lying wetland areas. Due to natural processes such as flooding, these forests were buried underneath the soil. As more and more soil deposited over them, these dead plant remains were compressed. As the process continued the plant matter was protected from biodegradation and oxidation, usually by mud or acidic water. Under high pressure and high temperature, dead vegetation was slowly converted to coal. The omnibus process of formation of coal, thus, comprises of conversion of dead plant matter into peat, followed by its conversion to lignite, then sub-bituminous coal, after that bituminous coal, and lastly anthracite. This process of enrichment of coal as it is progressively forced deeper into an ambience with higher temperature and pressure involves biological and geological processes that take place over a long period and is called coalification. During coalification, large amounts of methane-rich gas are generated and stored within the coal on internal surfaces; hence comes coalbed methane. Coalbed methane (CBM), a gas formed as part of the geological processes that are responsible for the generation of coal, is adsorbed into the solid matrix of the coal during its formation process. Coalbed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other conventional gas reservoirs, as the methane is adsorbed and not absorbed. The methane is in a near-liquid state, lining the inside of pores within the coal. The open fractures in the coal that result from the liberation of volatile materials (and subsequent contraction due to the liberation) from the coal due to the high temperature and pressure conditions encountered, called cleats, may also contain free gas or can be saturated with water."

Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

"The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

Significant economic benefits can result when rock mechanics is applied within a practical framework and integrated within the other engineering functions of the mine organization. This requires management support and understanding of rock mechanics as a practical tool to help attain high standards of safety, productivity and resource recovery. For such an approach, a long-term geotechnical program is needed in most operations to build an adequate data base and to ensure that design and ground control issues are handled in a cost-effective manner. This paper presents a summary of four case studies where significant economic benefits were realized with the help of rock mechanics. Although cost savings were not computed, the economic benefits are obvious and clearly impacted the mine operations favorably.

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

"The objective of the study conducted by the authors is to determine what media size(s) addition will maximize any given plant ball mill’s grinding efficiency (Fig. 1). The functional performance parameters “mill grinding rate through the size of interest,” and “cumulative mill grinding rates” from both plant and smallscale tests are applied to this task. A plant media sizing methodology, and industrial case studies, are provided.BackgroundA previous article (“Ball mill classification system optimization through functional performance modeling,” Nov. 17, McIvor et al., 2017, Mining Engineering) described circuit classification system efficiency (CSE), equal to the percentage of coarse (plus circuit P80 target size) material in the ball mill. It can be measured and then increased through pump and cyclone adjustments. By so transferring the application of ball mill power from fine (minus P80 product size) to coarse material, circuit efficiency is increased and overgrinding is decreased.The other factor that determines overall circuit efficiency is how well the power that is applied to the coarse material grinds it. This is affected by design and operating variables like the media sizing and mill percent solids. From circuit functional performance (McIvor et al., 1990):Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Power applied to coarse material (kW) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (1)The power applied to coarse material is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. Therefore:Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Total mill power (kW) x CSE (%) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (2) Production rate, mill power and CSE can be measured during a plant circuit survey. The mill grinding rate of coarse material is then calculated. At the circuit target P80 size, this is the mill grinding rate (of coarse material) through the size of interest. The objective is to maximize this rate. The mill grinding efficiency can also be calculated by taking the ratio of the mill grinding rate over the material’s grindability as measured in the lab. Mill percent solids optimization has thusly been achieved (McIvor et al., 2000). For media sizing, maximizing the mill grinding rate on a given ore is equivalent to maximizing the mill grinding efficiency. Ores of different grindability will be part of the discussion."

The stability of key strata is of utmost importance in ensuring safe and effective coal seam mining operations. To minimize disturbance impacts on these strata and ensure their stability, it is crucial to assess the degree of disturbance caused by mining activities. This study proposes the evaluation index “disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD)” and establishes a quantitative KSDD criterion to measure the degree of disturbance on key strata. To facilitate the assessment process, an intelligent calculation system for KSDD is developed. The classification criteria are derived by combining the measured three-zone heights from multiple mines. The reliability and accuracy of the KSDD quantitative criterion are validated using field measurement data. Furthermore, the KSDD quantitative criterion is applied to the Meihuajing mining area No. 23, and the distribution characteristics of KSDD are analyzed. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for reducing disturbance and enhancing the stability of key strata during subsequent mining operations. Overall, this work contributes to the field of ground control in coal seam mining by providing a comprehensive approach to assess and mitigate the disturbance caused by mining activities on key strata.

"Composite sprayed concrete lining (SCL), consisting of two layers of permanent sprayed concrete separated by a layer of spray-applied waterproofing membrane, represents the latest development in SCL tunneling, but presents several challenges to designers. This paper aims to address the following issues: (1) how to simulate composite action, (2) behavior of a composite SCL tunnel, and (3) how to utilize composite action to achieve lining thickness efficiency. It firstly sets out the background to the composite SCL concept, and then presents a strategy for numerical investigation. The main part of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the simulation results, focusing on the lining deformation, load sharing and the safety margin of both linings. Interface stresses are also examined. It is found that significant secondary lining thickness reduction may be achieved by utilizing composite action. Challenges for the design of composite SCL tunnels are briefly discussed at the end. INTRODUCTION Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnelling has seen rapid development over the last twenty years in the UK (Su 2013). One of these developments has been the replacement of traditional sheet membrane and cast in situ secondary lining with innovative spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining system, which has been adopted in recent major projects, such as Crossrail (Pickett 2013), and brings many benefits to the construction (Dimmock et al. 2013). The combination of sprayed primary lining, spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining is perceived to provide a structurally efficient lining system that outperforms the traditional lining system, which consists of sacrificial primary lining, sheet waterproofing membrane and cast in situ secondary lining. The claimed benefits in structural performance arises from the composite action between the sprayed primary and secondary linings via the spray applied waterproofing membrane, which produces a much stiffer cross-section and therefore a more efficient use of materials. Early investigations on the design of composite SCL tunnels were carried out without (1) definite and reliable long-term interface parameters, (2) a verified numerical modelling technique, or (3) consideration of different stress histories between primary and secondary linings (Thomas and Pickett 2011, Marcher et al. 2011). This paper reports the findings from a numerical parametric study on a typical composite SCL tunnel with varied secondary lining thickness. The results show that the true benefit of composite lining arises from the optimisation of the lining thickness (stiffness) ratio between the primary and secondary linings to achieve secondary lining safety and thickness efficiency at the same time."

In 1977, an article in World Mining (1) reported a total of 2726 rotary blast hole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher: Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item, to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to re¬ducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, five factors affect the rate of penetration. They are: 1. Bit selection 2. Weight on the bit 3. Rotary speed 4. Hole cleaning 5. Formation properties Of these factors, all but one may be control¬led by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. Cleaning the hole is a good place to start. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh, clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in re drilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole.

A quantitative x-ray diffraction method has been developed for the analysis of alteration minerals in wallrock. Alteration data are plotted and contoured (analogous to geochemical data). Alteration trends outlined by this technique correlate closely with geochemical anomalies, and in some cases attend well beyond the perimeter of anomalous base metal values. "Monomineralic contouring," applied originally to porphyry-type mineralization, has been extended to other types of mineralization, including volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Equipment and techniques used in the quantitative measurement of alteration mineralogy are discussed.

Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand. "According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.
