INTRODUCTION Until recently, gamma doses had been largely ignored in Ontario uranium mines. This has been due to the assumption that these doses are small and have been more or less unchanged with time and hence their effects have been included automatically in the epidemiological studies that led to the establishment of radon daughter exposure limits. This assumption had to be challenged for two basic reasons. The first was that radon daughter exposures to miners have been progressively reduced over the years due to improved ventilation and ever more stringent regulations, while gamma exposures have presumably remained relatively unchanged. Therefore it must be assumed that the ratio of gamma to radon daughter exposure has gone up. The second reason is more philosophical. It is clearly inappropriate to make judgements on the significance of a potential industrial hazard when the magnitude of that hazard has not been fully assessed. Having decided that some sort of assessment of gamma exposures to uranium miners must be made, it was than necessary to determine how this should be done. Several options were available, for instance: (i) Wholesale personal gamma dosimetry for all mine and mill workers, (ii) Personal gamma dosimetry only for those workers suspected of receiving the higher doses, coupled with area monitoring to estimate the exposures of other workers, (iii) Area monitoring coupled with dose rate times time calculations for all. This would correspond to the generally prevalent method of assessing radon daughter exposures. It was argued that since radon daughter exposures are the major radiological hazard in uranium mines, to invest resources for assessing a lesser hazard to a greater degree of precision was not cost effective. (iv) Since gamma dose rate is related to ore grade, individual doses could be assigned from knowledge of work location and ore grade. Before deciding which of these options would be most appropriate, it was necessary to have some idea of the magnitude of the problem. Very few data were available in the literature and with the exception of a few spot dose rate measurements, and the results of a few gamma dosimeters issued to selected individuals by some of the mining companies, nothing was available. A rule of thumb of obscure origin is often quoted within the industry indicating that gamma dose rates underground will be about 0.25 mR/h per lb/ton or 5 mR/h per % U. This had been used by some to justify neglecting gamma radiation at least for ore grades of the order of 0.1% or 2 lb/ton, on the grounds that gamma dose rates would be of the order of 0.5 mR/h and therefore give rise to annual doses of only about 10 mSv (lrem). That is, it was assumed that gamma radiation was of limited concern compared to the hazard associated with the inhalation of radon daughters. We were thus faced with the situation of just assuming that no regulatory limits were being breached. This situation could not be allowed to continue. A program was initiated to investigate the gamma doses absorbed by uranium miners in three mines in Ontario, and extensive gamma surveys were conducted in the Quirke 2 mine of Rio Algom Ltd, Elliot Lake; Denison Mine, Elliot Lake; and Agnew Lake Mine, Espanola. Negative reaction was received from several mine company officials to the possibility of all miners being required to wear personal gamma dosimeters due to the logistical difficulties involved, and therefore part of the project was aimed at determining if a reliable correlation between gamma dose rate and ore grade in the work location could be deduced, in order that dose rate times time calculations might be used for gamma dose assessments. The results of these programs provided evidence that the gamma dose for some employees in the three mines investigated may be a significant fraction of the current maximum permissible annual dose of 50mSv (5 rem). When combined with radon daughter exposures in the manner recommended by the ICRP at their 1980 Brighton meeting (ICRP 80) the results indicated that some individuals will come close to the resulting limit and may even exceed it. Chile leads the world in copper production with an annual capacity nearing 2 Mt (2.2 million st). Most of the country’s copper production, about 74%, is mined by open-pit mining methods. Open-pit mining also accounts for a major portion of Chile’s production of other commodities, including iron, gold, silver and coal (Table 1). Chile’s mining boom began 10 years ago and is expected to continue through the end of the decade. From 1980 to 1990, copper production in Chile increased 48.7%. During the same period, gold production increased 303%, silver production increased 119% and coal and iron ore production increased 163.7% and 6.6%, respectively (Table 2). It is estimated that copper production will be in the order of 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) by 1996, when new projects now under construction come onstream. Gold production could reach 35 t (1.1 million oz) and coal production could increase another 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy). Open-pit mining has played a significant role in Chile’s minerals production growth. The expected increases in mine operations will come about mainly through new open pits or expansions of existing surface operations (Table 3). However, the number of open-pit copper mines will decrease from 74% to 66% of the total number of Chilean mines. Gold mines will increase from 63% to 69% of the total, while coal mines will go from 41% to 59%. Most all of the present iron ore production is from surface mines and will continue that way.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. An attempt has been made to show the benefit of theory in comminution practice.

Stainless steel swarf is a typical by-product produced from stainless steel processing, which contains a significant level of valuable metals, such as iron, chrome, and nickel. About 1 million tons of stainless steel swarf are generated in China annually, but as mixed with impurities such as Al and Si, stainless steel swarf is not suitable to be directly smelted into stainless steel through refining process. In this study, stainless steel swarf was applied as a strengthening agent during limonitic laterite sintering process. The effects of adding stainless steel swarf on green bed permeability, the yield and quality indexes of the sinters, and the microstructure of the sinters were evaluated systematically. The results showed that the concentrated distribution degree of granules and green bed permeability were improved after adding stainless steel swarf. As the additional amount of stainless steel swarf increased from 0 to 3%, the tumble index and yield of the sinters rose from 50.07 to 54.69% and from 62.04 to 67.35%, respectively. The addition of stainless steel swarf would not change the phase compositions, and had little adverse impact on the metallurgical properties of the limonitic laterite sinters.

A key operation of any milling circuit is grinding. Over the last two decades, large diameter semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills have become the preferred primary grinding mills. The drive systems became more complex as the size of the mills became larger, during which time operating and design experience for SAG mill accumulated. Considerable reliance is now placed in power electronics to provide flexibility in SAG mill operation to meet the demands of lower operating costs. Most earlier SAG mills were designed to operate at fixed speeds. Present day SAG mills can operate at a fixed speed or variable speed through the use of an ac synchronous motor or dc motor. This flexibility, however, comes with an increase in capital and operating costs. Since the capital and operating costs of a project directly affect the project's rate of return, the selection of a SAG mill and its drive system should depend, in part, on the impact that the extra cost makes on the project. This impact can be measured by performing an economic analysis based on net present cost (NPC) calculations. Although the NPC calculation is an important factor in the grinding mill selection, other factors, such as reliability of mill drives and power source, are important elements in the decision making process. This article examines how the NPC calculation, plus reliability and power source, influence SAG mill selection.

Who We Are Farmland Hydro (FHLP) is a Limited Partnership formed by Farmland Industries, the largest U.S. farmers’ cooperative, located in Kansas City, MO, and Norsk Hydro, a large Norwegian company engaged in fertilizer, petroleum and the specialty metals industry. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. Other uses include animal feed, vitamins, medicine, light bulbs, soft drinks, film, flame resistant fabric, optical glass, toothpaste, bone china and other consumer products.

In a proposed rulemaking regulating asbestos, nonasbestos varieties of Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite would be excluded from the regulations controlling permissible exposure to asbestos fibers. This proposed rulemaking is perceived as improving the scientific basis of the regulation of asbestos because it recognizes that there are no scientific data, either mineralogical or health related, which support the regulation of nonasbestos Tremoiite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite in the same manner as asbestos fibers. However, the proposed regulation, while representing a major advance in the treatment of AT A for regulatory purposes, does not provide an adequate analytical method for distinguishing between asbestos and nonasbestos particles, nor an adequate description of the regulated minerals. This paper addresses those topics, recommending that OSHA include an appropriate mineralogical definition, and implement a discriminate counting procedure to distinguish asbestos from nonasbestos particles.

This investigation included a study of three different methods for the acoustic drying of ultrafine coals. Ultrafine coal being defined as coal which passes through a 100 mesh sieve. The first method employed stationary drying of small coal samples in sound fields having frequencies of 12,000 cps and 20,000 cps. Sound intensities up to 150 db were used. The second method employed the use of rotary drying kilns. The effect of such variables as temperature, sound intensity, coal feed rate, air flow rate, and initial moisture content were studied. The third method employed the use of a multi-tiered, vibrating screen dryer. The effect of initial moisture content and residence time were studied.

The successful application of factors limiting the? availability of coal in eastern Kentucky depends on ac-curate assessment of the original resources. Examination of several previous coal-resource estimates for the region reveals significant differences among the outcomes. These differences relate to methods of analysis, biases in data and their utilization, and the problem of defining the lateral continuity of mineable beds. Improvements in the methods of estimating the original resources would greatly enhance the reliability of the results of the Coal Availability Program.

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.

Acid rock drainage is the result of exposure of sulfidic materials, such as pyrites and sulfidic ores, to air and water. The oxidation of these sulfides is catalyzed by more than a million times by the bacteria Thiobacillus jerrooxidans and close families. Inhibition of these bacteria can mitigate 98% or more of the acid loading generated. This can be achieved by the use of certain surfactants that are selectively bactericidal to the lithotropic acidophilic bacteria. Bactericides are used in two ways. As periodic or continuous treatments for prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved, and in controlled release form for reclamation where treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace Thiobacillus jerrooxidans with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without need for further treatments. Use of bactericides begins with laboratory testing of the site material to qualify the site for bactericide treatment and dosage determination. Site specific treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Once acid production is controlled, solubilization of metals is correspondingly reduced. Results and economics of use from active and reclamation sites are presented.

A common belief among Itlnl.ng operators today is that computer based truck m:mitoring and dispatching systems are only applicable to, or affordable by, very large scale open pit mines. Before the advent of microcomputer technology this belief was generally a valid one. Microcomputer technology as it currently exists has reached a high level of sophistication and capability, rapidly approaching that of the minicomputer standard. When coupled with reliable software and data communications packages, it now provides the means to make truck monitoring and dispatching a viable and attractive management aid to mines of all sizes. This paper briefly addresses the evolution and current state of computer truck dispatching and examines a microcomputer based system in this context. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach to truck dispatching a recent installation in a medium sized mine is presented. Preliminary field data from the case mine are presented to illustrate the methodology.

Draglines are one of the largest land-based equipment moving across the earth. They typically ranging in size from2.5 to 6.5 kt (2,750 to 7,100 st). Their size, though, makes them difficult to maintain. Recently, G&S Engineering Services used an Enerpac synchronous hydraulic lifting system to lift a 3.2-t(3,500-st) dragline at the Curragh Mine in Queensland, Australia’s Bowen Basin.

The abstract discusses the importance of reliable mine monitoring systems for preventing accidents. It focuses on diagnosing ventilation system failures caused by roadway faults that alter airflow resistance. The paper proposes using an improved Support Vector Machine (SVM) method to identify the fault location based on changes in air volume detected by wind speed sensors. The approach involves building a sensitivity 0-1 matrix and establishing a roadway fault scope library. The improved SVM method is tested on the Daming coal mine, demonstrating its effectiveness in diagnosing fault locations, reducing training time, and improving accuracy compared to traditional SVM.

The trend towards proportionately rising volumes of surface mining through- out the world and especially in the United States has led some observers to predict that the future of underground mining is quite limited. Certainly, the simple extrapolation of current trends1 gives evidence of a compelling sort for the hypothesis that technological progress is proceeding at a faster pace in surface than in underground mining. This paper attempts to examine the basis for these predictions by searching the historical record on differential rates of productivity as these are observed in iron ore and coal mining. In recent years economists have discussed "technology gaps" among industries or segments of the same industry, by which they mean that mechanisms for invention and its diffusion are faulty or retarded in such a way that feasible cost-cutting innovations are not applied or developed, even though technicians regard them as practical.2

Underground mining of coal by longwall mining methods has not been a predominant technique in Ohio. To date, only five mines in the state utilize this method, however, the technique has sparked a certain amount of controversy. As a mining technique, longwalling was introduced into southeastern Ohio in the early 1970's but it did not attract public attention until the mines began moving into privately held surface lands. This occurred coincidentally at about the same time that the state of Ohio began to regulate the environmental impacts of underground mining. Prior to the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in 1977, (SMCRA), Ohio's reclamation law, Chapter 1513 Ohio Revised Code (O.R.C. 1513) did not regulate underground coal mines. As a result of SMCRA, the Ohio Statute was amended in 1978, to include regulation of the surface effects of subsidence. The inevitable result was that existing mines were immediately subject to regulations that were not considered during the initial mine planning process. (For an excellent survey of Ohio Laws that deal with coal mine subsidence, see Zima, 1985. ) The problem faced at that time by both the coal industry and the Ohio Division of Reclamation (the agency within ODNR charged with implementing O.R.C. Ch. 1513.1, was that of attempting to superimpose permitting requirements, and design performance standards onto mines that' had been operational for a number of years.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect bit drill wear and use the equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel Software. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their: coal. Sulfur was the major concern. Btu content and sodium limited the market for some plants. The PRB market has now extended to plants that are converting from other coals because of the Clean Air Act. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents that affect boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to improve cost controls. Kerr-McGee Coal's Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

A geometallurgical testing program was developed to anticipate ore behavior in the beneficiation plant and support production planning. Over 100 drill core samples from a major iron ore deposit were tested using bench-scale gravity and magnetic separation methods to assess variability in process responses. Results showed significant differences in key attributes such as iron grade, gangue content, slimes generation, and specific gravity, directly impacting concentrate grade, recoveries, and tailings quality. Correlation analysis and regression models were used to link feed properties to process outcomes, and a mass recovery estimation equation (Wrec) was developed for predictive use. The study proposes the integration of geometallurgical parameters—such as Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, LOI, ore type, size fractions, and slimes content—into the block model to support blending decisions and minimize operational risks. This work establishes a solid foundation for long-term mine-to-plant integration, with future phases aiming to expand testing and build a calibrated geometallurgical model.
