The restructuring of mining operations in Valea Jiului coal basin imposed by the transation to the market economy calls for an increased coal production. Under the circumstances, the role of drainage networks grows ever more important. The paper describes an original mathematical model and software developed on its basis, with enables the ventilation engineer to assess the configurations of different systems, as well as to test their reliability and prognose their future performance before conceiving another methane drainage system or changing the existing one. The paper also includes the underlying principles of an optimization program for methane drainage networks, which will enable the detection of the optimal methane drainage system, both from a technical and an economic point of view.

Pore-filling organic material concentrated uranium to form sandstone-hosted primary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Grants uranium region, New Mexico. Petrographic observations and radiometric ages for primary ore in the Westwater Canyon Member require that the organic material was emplaced early in the diagenetic history of the host sandstone; in fact, organic material was emplaced before major compaction. This inferred early emplacement constrains models concerning the nature and origin of the organic material and thus also constrains models of ore genesis. Reconstruction of the burial history of the basin indicates that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the interval of inferred emplacement of the organic material, was probably not a time of hydrocarbon generation and migration. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, elemental abundances, and isotopic studies provide further constraints on the nature of the organic material, and data from these studies are consistent with a humic acid rather than an oil origin. In addition, the overall tabular shape of primary uranium orebodies and the way these orebodies are suspended in the host sandstone mimics Recent deposits of humate, the precipitated form of humic acids. The critical clue that favors a humic acid origin for ore-related organic material is provided by the nature and patterns of postdepositional alterations that are spatially and temporally related to primary ore, specifically destruction of detrital magnetite and ilmenite (iron-titanium oxide) grains. Humic acids are implicated in the destruction of iron-titanium oxide grains because these organic acids are one of the most effective natural agents in leaching of Iron from these grains. Thus, timing constraints, chemical evidence, orebody geometry, and the nature and patterns of ore-related alterations favor a humic acid origin and suggest that an oil origin is highly unlikely. Because alteration of iron-titanium oxide grains tracks the pathways of humic-bearing solutions through the host sandstones, it is possible to trace these solutions back to their source. Alteration patterns in the Westwater Canyon Member suggest that the humic-bearing solutions originated as pore fluids in the mudflat facies of the overlying Brushy Basin Member and moved into adjacent sandstones during early dewatering of the mudstones. The humic acids precipitated, by the process of cation loading, in tabular layers. Uranium was concentrated within these tabular layers by complexation with the humic acids to form primary uranium orebodies.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of three major islands (St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix) and some 50 smaller islands that are located primarily along the coasts of St. Thomas and St. John. St. Croix, the largest of the islands, is located approximately 160 km south-southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico and is about 218 km in area (Fig. 1). St. Thomas, the second largest island is located 64 km east of Puerto Rico and incorporates approximately 77 km2. St. John is located immediately to the east of St. Thomas and incorporates approximately 49 km2. The climate in the U.S. Virgin Islands is maritime tropical. The average annual rainfall at higher elevations is 127-152 cm and at lower elevations 51-76 cm. There is no well-defined wet or dry season. Temperatures generally average in the 80's (F°) with only a 5°-7° F variation throughout the year.

"There’s no fast way to add more than four miles of track, most of it underground, to the Sound Transit Link Light Rail system in the Seattle area. But increasingly busy traffic through a number of neighborhoods made it necessary. That’s the challenge a joint venture of several tunneling contractors faced when starting its portion of the $1.9 billion Northgate Link Extension in 2013, and the project is still keeping them busy three years later. Completion will mean just a 14-minute ride from Northgate to downtown for an extra 60,000 passengers by 2030. The transit lines will join 58 km (36 miles) of new and under-construction light rail lines running north, east and south from Seattle.Voters, tired of long commute times, approved the project, a key part of Seattle’s regional mass transit system, in 2008. The extension is part of a plan adopted by the Sound Transit board in 1996 to connect the region’s major activity centers. The Northgate project is meant to relieve one of the area’s most congested traffic areas by connecting the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods to existing routes including downtown Seattle and SeaTac airport.Sound Transit dedicated more than a quarter of the project’s estimated expense — $440 million -— to general contractor JCM Northlink LLC to handle the tunnel segment. JCM is a joint venture formed in 2013 between Jay Dee Contractors of Livonia, MI, Frank Coluccio Construction of Seattle, WA and Michels Corp. of Brownsville, WI. The contractors regularly collaborate on large-scale projects and brought experience working on a different section of the extension they completed in 2013.JCM project leaders knew immediately that the schedule would be demanding. They had to work around the clock, six days a week to meet deadlines. The extension runs through highly populated areas, meaning contractors had to follow strict city noise restrictions between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Plus, supervisors needed to manage the scheduling of nearly 250 employees to keep work running smoothly.“We had eight different operations and four different subcontractors trying to work in one tunnel,” said Chris Wood, JCM site project superintendent. “It’s important that we keep work linear. That’s the biggest challenge: keeping a path in and out so you can pour concrete, keep electricians and carpenters going, and accomplish everything else.”"

Rare earth elements (REEs) have many critical uses in advanced technology and the lack of a reliable domestic supply has been identified by the US DOE as a vulnerability to US economic security. Our research focuses on developing an economical process for extracting REEs from coal fly ash and power plant wastewater sludge by coupling a hydrothermal extraction process with the engineering of a ligand-associated media for concentrating REEs from the extraction liquid. Ash samples have been collected from two Detroit-area Power plants that burn 100% low sulfur coal (Trenton Channel) or fuel blends of 75% low sulfur coal and 25% high sulfur coal or 70% low sulfur coal, 15% high sulfur coal, and 15% petcoek (Monroe Power Plant). Ash samples are then subjected to hydrothermal conditions from 100-350 °C for 1-24 h at Los Alamos National Laboratory and leachate concentrations are measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and compared to hydrofluoric acid digestion results. Experiments designed to aid in ligand selection and loading optimization show that di-(2-ethylhexyl)methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH or DIPEX™) can be successfully loaded to a commercially available swellable organically modified silica (SOMS) media. Preliminary results show that DIPEX-associated SOMS surface loading can exceed 4x on a mass/mass basis and in simplified sorption experiments with Nd solutions (~pH 2), the DIPEX-SOMS media can sorb >90 mg Nd per g of media. Recovery of the sorbed Nd with low pH solutions has had low efficiency with the high (4 g DIPEX/ g dry media); however, near complete recovery was achieved with lower surface loadings (0.05 g DIPEX/ g dry media). Column experiments are being conducted to evaluate the optimal ligand/media ratio for repeated use. Completive sorption with Fe and other major cations are also being evaluated.

Over the past several years, computerized financial models have been an important part of Newmont's strategic planning process. Two applications will be discussed in this paper: a general purpose financial model of Newmont, and a detailed operational/financial model of Magma Copper Company. Newmont?s general purpose financial model was developed using Lotus 1-2-3. It was designed to aid management in assessing the financial consequences of investment and financing decisions associated with long-term strategic planning by simulating the consolidated effect from individual transactions. Not only is the model capable of assessing the sensitivity of specific decisions to changes in the external economic environment (i. e., commodity prices, interest rates, inflation and exchange rates), it can also evaluate the effect from operating and financial decisions, including changing production levels and cost structures at individual operating units as well as simulating several types of transactions, including equity and debt issues, acquisitions and divestitures. The analysis of Magma Copper Company required the development of a detailed operating and financial model of the Company. The model was developed using IFPS in the corporation?s UNISYS (then Burroughs) B7900 mainframe computer and included separate pro forma financial statements for each of San Manuel-Pinto Valley's mines and concentrators, as well as Magma's smelting and refining operations. The outcome of this analysis was the decision to merge Magma Copper and Pinto Valley Copper Corporation, and to recapitalize the new corporation in order to provide funds for a retrofit and expansion of its Arizona smelter and expansions of its refinery and SXEW facilities.

Simulation has established itself as an accepted tool for the design and optimization of complex minerals processing plants. This paper addresses the use of simulation as a tool for the design and optimization of carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants. The complex, interactive nature of CIP/CIL plants makes detailed experimentation an expensive and time consuming approach to CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization. This paper discusses a simulation-based software tool that can make the process of CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization much more cost effective. Many of the issues and problems pertaining to the use of simulation for CIP/CIL design and operation are generic. Thus, this paper also attempts to highlight generic issues that must be solved before simulation will become a more widely used design and optimization tool. Requirements for the application of simulation for CIP/CIL plant design and optimization are highlighted. Similar problems and issues can be identified for most mineral processing plants.

The control of sulfur dioxide and fly ash in the emissions from coal-fired boilers is a significant segment of the national environ- mental protection program. Developing technologies to accomplish this objective presently emphasize aqueous scrubbing techniques. Should circumstances require aqueous scrubbing for fly ash control only, provision must nevertheless be made to counteract the presence of sulfur dioxide which can create an acidic and potentially corrosive environment. Major technologies for sulfur dioxide control by aqueous scrubbing include, l), recovery processes yielding sulfuric acid or elemental sulfur and 2), throw-away processes which produce a sludge consisting essentially of calcium sulfite or varying amounts of calcium sulfate.1/ Recovery processes are more sophisticated and best suited for locations where there are markets for sulfuric acid or sulfur, or where sludge disposal is an overriding consideration. Throw-away processes are generally less sophisticated but have a problem in that gas scrubbing systems may not operate for practical time periods without failures due to corrosion and to plugging by particulates and precipitates. To overcome this difficulty, some throw-away systems employ an aqueous solution of caustic in the gas scrubbing device to assure maximum water solubility of sulfur compounds, followed by the addition of lime to the scrubbing medium in a system external to the scrubber to produce the throw-away sludge and regenerate the caustic for recycle. Such systems are referred to as double alkali systems.2/

This paper reviews the trends in supply and consumption of the principal magnesium compounds in the United States in relation to domestic requirements and world resources. The data are confined to these principal magnesium compounds: Magnesium chloride, magnesium hydroxide, precipitated magnesium carbonate, and magnesium oxide (commonly referred to as magnesia). The properties and uses of magnesium compounds are shown in various chapters of' the 2nd edition of Industrial Minerals end Rocks. 3/ The third edition of this reference is in preparation. A more recent description of properties, uses and sources of magnesium compounds appears in a Bureau of Mines publication.4/ The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Refractories Institute have published comprehensive data on the properties and uses of basic refractories. Many magnesium compounds are prepared by the producers to meet specifications set by individual consumers.

Over the past quarter of a century, the success of the hydrocyclone as a classifier in closed circuit grinding installations has permitted the introduction of the cyclone into virtually all fields of wet industrial processing. Research and experience gained in these applications have established the optimum cyclone sizes and designs necessary to provide the required performance. Although cyclones are used in widely diverse liquid-solid applications, their use for ultrafine separation clearly demonstrates the importance of a familiarity with previous case studies. Krebs Engineers is firmly dedicated to serving the process industry and has acquired the unsurpassed knowledge and experience to handle all types of separations and classification problems. Cyclones have been used for a number of applications to make what might be considered fine separations. A typical example is in an iron ore grinding circuit where a 381 mm diameter cyclone will classify an overflow product to 85% -44 micron. There is no question that this is a fine separation, but still finer separations are possible, and these are known as ultrafine separations.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

Newmont Gold Company began full production in early 1995 at the Carlin East underground mine. The mine is currently producing at the rate of 900 tpd (1.000 stpd). for an annual production of 150.000 ounces. Approximately one hundred twenty five hourly and salary personnel are employed at the project for the estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently utilized at the mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased a new AC-Eickhoff ET-210 Roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June of 1997 and is used in both longhole stope topcut development and cut and fill production at a rate of 225 tpd (250 stpd). The Carlin East mine is operated by Newmont Gold Company. The mine is one of four underground gold mines in production in northeastern Nevada owned by Newmont Gold.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The large jointed chalk reservoir situated at 3 km depth in the North sea's Ekofisk field is undergoing major compaction after nearly 15 year of oil and gas production. Approximately 150 km 3 of the overlying sediments, mostly shales, are involved in the subsidence. A maximum central subsidence of nearly 3 meters, and a maximum present rate of 45 cm per year has set in motion numerous studies of the phenomenon. Non-linear finite element (FEM) and non- linear distict element (DEM) analyses of the compaction and large scale subsidence were performed. Consistent differences between the continuum and discontinuum analyses were noted. In the latter, slip on hypothetical bedding planes and sub- vertical or vertical faults was allowed, which possibly gives a more realistic simulation of the real processes of subsidence in such a large body of rock. Laboratory studies of the reservoir joints included roughness measurement, JRC and JCS characterization, direct shear tests while saturated in heated Ekofisk oil, and coupled closure-shear-flow tests with heated oil followed by heated sea water. Discontinuum modelling using Cundall's UDEC was performed on representative jointed assemblies (two sets of steeply dipping conjugate joints) to investigate the effect of a major reduction of pore pressure within the deformable matrix and along each joint. It was found that the large shrinkage deformation of the matrix allowed joint shearing to occur despite the constraint of uniaxial strain. Relative mass bulking due to small but widely distributed joint shear possibly explains the observed maintenance of excellent productivity despite large vertical strains in the reservoir.

Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.

The project includes 2.4 sq. miles of contiguous mining claims and leases in the Mojave Mining District, Kern County, California, approximately B5 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The property is readily accessible year round by all-weather roads and is within 6 miles of the main line of the Southern Pacific Railway.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.
