An investigation was conducted to determine the minimum number of samples that must be studied by image analysis of polished sections in order to characterize a mill product and to determine the apparent mineral liberation. It was found that a representive polished section cannot be prepared from an unscreened sample that has a wide size range of particles. Similarly individual screened' fractions are not representative of the sample because minerals are partitioned during screening. Consequently the quantities of soft brittle minerals are increased in fine grained fractions and quantities of hard minerals are increased in coarse grained fractions. It is assumed that results obtained by combining data for a series of narrow size range screened fractions (1 Tyler size range) are representative of the sample, and relatively accurate apparent mineral liberation data can be obtained for a mill product by analysing each fraction and combining the data. Somewhat less accurate data would be obtained by analysing a series of screened, fractions that have a wider size range of particles (5 Tyler size ranges). Mineral liberation analyses show that the most reliable apparent mineral liberation in each screened fraction is a value taken from a smooth curve drawn through the lowest points on a graph of % free vs size. A correlation between the apparent mineral liberation in screened fractions and calculated mineral liberations using Kings liberation model is good for sphalerite but not for chalcopyrite and galena.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

A new technology for ironmaking based on direct gaseous reduction of iron ore concentrate is under development. The process is based on the flash reduction of the concentrate particles in a gaseous reducing agent, such as hydrogen, natural gas, a reducing gas generated by partial combustion of coal, or a combination thereof. This technology is expected to drastically lower CO2 emission and reduce energy consumption by about 38% of the blast furnace requirements. The energy savings are possible largely due to the elimination of pelletization and cokemaking. Process design and simulation using hydrogen as the reductant for iron ore concentrate have been performed. A process flow sheet composed of a flash reactor, heat recovery system, water removal system for purifying recycled hydrogen, and all connecting streams was evaluated using the METSIM software. Ironmaking using two reactors was also designed and simulated, which could reduce the total required amount of hydrogen although it would increase the complexity of the flow sheet and operation.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

A filter consisting of a synthetic fibrous material has been determined to be a viable alternative to the wire mesh panels currently used in irrigated filter dust collection systems. An extensive laboratory investigation of the material showed that it removed a higher percentage of both respirable coal and quartz dust from the air entering a collector than did the flat and pleated wire mesh panel designs. This improvement in dust collection efficiency reduced the amount of coal and quartz dust discharged from the collector exhaust by approximately 44%. Since continued exposure to excessive levels (>5%) of respirable quartz dust presents a severe health hazard, this alternative filter medium could be of use to those mines required to comply with more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

The analysis of the results of metallurgical experiments is often complicated by experimental errors and uncertainty, the complexity of the system being studied, and the confusion of correlation with causation. Consequently, comparative statistics are used to determine if a difference exists between the outcomes of tests, an estimate of this difference, and the precision of the estimate. This paper reviews the use of significance tests and confidence intervals for the comparison of results from two tests, the use of reference distributions, and blocking and randomization techniques to reduce unavoidable sources of variability. These techniques are demonstrated using plant and laboratory data.

An alternative way to the normal practice of precipitation of jarosite, goethite, or hematite for removal of iron from zinc sulphate process liquors/ is to employ the techniques of solvent extraction. The process presented avoids the addition of any external alkali for the extraction of iron by integrating the leaching and solvent extraction steps in a hydrometallurgical zinc plant. By starting the leaching of zinc from the solid zinc calcine material with an organic solution of an acid liquid cation exchanger, the organic phase is loaded with the organic zinc salt from the direct reaction with zinc oxide. The residue from the organic leaching is transferred to a hot acid leach circuit where the remaining zinc oxide and the zinc ferrites will dissolve form¬ing an aqueous sulphate solution of zinc and iron. In the subsequent solvent extraction of iron from this aqueous leach solution, iron is exchanged with zinc from the organic phase. The commercial carboxylic acid Versatic 10 (Shell) is highly efficient for this integrated process of leaching and solvent extraction. The resulting iron-loaded organic phase is heated to 150-200 C in the presence of water whereby the iron will be directly precipitated from the organic phase as iron oxide of high purity and the regenerated organic acid is recycled to the organic leaching step for reloading with zinc.

This report covers laboratory experiments simulating in situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50-150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25-2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

The Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) began operation in 1982 with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the local community. This commitment ensured the long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the mine site and maintained an active partnership with local stakeholders. Concerns for economic development intensified as mine closure loomed on the horizon and fostered the inception of the Community Transition Advisory Committee(CTAC).This coalition of interested area stakeholders has the primary focus to sustain current mining operations while concurrently seeking alternative post-mine economic development opportunities utilizing existing mine assets. Accomplishments include development of an Asset Re-utilization and Post-closure Plan, a community survey regarding the impending mine closure, recruiting an international wind energy company to develop a wind farm, and development of an industrial/business park. The synergy of this strong partnership is key to meeting sustainability goals and enhancing potential future mining operations. The cooperative effort of the GSM and the local stakeholders is a success story that could be a role model for other mining operations.

Sequential and evolutionary changes through time are recognizable in many, perhaps most major families of ore deposits and their geological environments. These changes are additional useful indicators of the evolutionary history of the earth and its tectonic processes. They are important in mineral exploration because they involve consideration of time as a fourth dimension, thereby indicating the most favorable ages, rather than types of rock for investigation. Many of the changes are analogous to those recognized in faunal evolution. Some primitive, unspecialized types of ore deposits occur nearly unchanged through rocks of widely differing age. Others diversify into several, more specialized variants, whereas still others become extinct. The place of these is taken by new, younger types, some of which undergo sudden proliferations and later diversifications of their own. In Archean greenstone belts irrlportant iron, nickel, gold, and base metal deposits occur co-regionally, but in different stratigraphic positions in the same, thick volcano-sedimentary successions. Here their close temporal and spatial associations suggest common genetic exhalative hydrothermal processes. The massive base metal sulfide family of ore deposits provides an excellent example of evolutionary changes, exhibiting distinct variations through both time and space. Deposits belonging to this family span the entire range of time, occurring in rocks of ancient Archean to Recent age, and specific types within the family also span the entire range of spatial environments from ensimatic to ensialic. Moreover there are possible evolutionary metallogenic links between certain types of massive base metal sulfide deposits and other important base metal ores, noteably Mississippi Valley-type and porphyry copper deposits.

Associated with cordilleran intrusives of intemediate to acidic composition, gold/silver ores are generally found in the intruded host rocks which are adjacent to these intrusives. Generally precious metal deposits lie further from the intrusives than allied base metal deposits. For vented intrusives, the associated volcanics may constitute the intruded rock and form the host for precious metal accumulation. Potential field methods, particularly magnetics, can help to define unseen boundaries of intrusive systems and thus can point to generalized prospecting targets. Other clues arise from the intrusive system type, its emplacement fracturing, the host rock type and local magnetic changes caused by mineralization processes.

The potential of rockfall at open-pit mines presents a continuous hazard to mine workers and is typically mitigated by designing catch benches at empirically determined widths. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is working in conjunction with industry and academia to revisit and update current catch bench guidelines to better match acceptable risk tolerances for modern mining practices. To begin this process, a rockfall testing program was designed to gather empirical runout and bench catchment data at partnering mine sites in the Western United States. This paper presents a detailed description of each component of the rockfall testing program, including scouting and safety plan development, equipment requirements, synthetic rock development for uniform testing across varying bench configurations, local rock collection for testing of mine-specific geology, data acquisition during testing, and data processing. Additionally, this paper describes how the program has been updated over time according to lessons learned during initial rockfall testing.

At MacIntyre Development of the National Lead Company, Taha s, New York,, the flotation plant was set up to recover ilmenite from the finer size fraction of the ore that cannot be efficiently treated in the main gravity-magnetic separa¬tion process. It was later expanded to handle the reground middlings from the tables wetherill magnetic separators. The ilmenite-magnetite ore is ground to minus 20 mesh in five 6 x 12 ft. rod mills in closed circuit with DSM screens. The minus 20 mesh screen undersize is pumped to four parallel sections each consisting of two rougher wet-magnetic separators and one cleaner separator for magnatite removal. The screen undersize from the fifth section is distributed to all four sections. The magnetite removed in the roughers is pumped back to the cleaners and the cleaner magnetite is dewatered in rake classifiers and carried by belt to the winter plant or the stockpile area. The nonmagnetic sands from rougher and cleaner magnetic separator are sized for table feed in eight pocket hydraulic sizers. The slime overflows from the Crocketts, the sizers, and the magnetite rakes are collected and pumped to three-inch cyclones for thickening and desliming. The cyclone underflow is the principal flotation plant feed.

I have been asked to give you the National Coal Association's (NCA) view of the future of the coal industry. However, before discussing the outlook for the future I would like to set the stage by taking a brief look at how the industry has changed over the last decade. In 1977 the coal industry was in the midst of a period of steady growth. Although most of the gains in the early and mid 1970's occurred in the west, the industry was still predominately eastern, with eastern production accounting for 76 percent of the 697 million total tons produced in 1977. The labor force was nearing a high - at over 220,000 workers, and the number of active mines was also at a decade high of over 6,000. Productivity on the other hand was at a low. The average miner produced 1.80 tons per hour, and labor relations were also at a low point. Projections for coal's future were very optimistic, mainly because of the unprecedented growth in coal use by the utility industry. In 1977 the 477 million tons of utility coal accounted for 68 percent of U.S. coal production, and the utility industry planned on 129,000 MW of new coal-fired capacity over the next decade. Consumption of metallurgical coal at coke plants was the second largest market at 78 million tons; the industrial and residential market consumed 70 million tons and exports were at 54 million tons. But in retrospect, a lot was happening in 1977 that signalled many changes in the coal industry: - Amendments to the Clean Air Act were passed, which required that utilities take an entirely different approach to meeting New Source Performance Standards at new plants, and required that standards be set for industrial boilers as well; - the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act became law; -electrical generation, despite the optimistic forecasts, was nearing the end of a period of close to five percent annual growth; -1977 ended and 1978 began with the longest coal strike in U.S. history. -crude oil imports in the U.S. reached an all time high as did both total consumption of petroleum products in the U.S. and oil consumption at utilities. The high level of oil imports set the stage for the oil price increases of 1979 and 1980 which resulted in an immediate increase in demand for coal, not only in the United States, but world wide. Labor strikes in Australia and Poland sent foreign buyers to the U.S. literally in droves, and quickly made the U.S. a force in the world steam coal market. The U.S. coal and transportation industries responded to this overwhelming potential demand for coal. In a very short time, the capability had been developed to mine and transport the 1.2 billion tons of coal that forecasters said would be needed by the mid 1980's. NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPFs) are used for reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in underground mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on how catalyzed diesel particulate filters perform. Two CDPFs, with two different catalysts, are used on vehicles in two mines. The CDPFs are periodically removed from service and evaluated in the laboratory to determine their DPM collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effects on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. This report summarizes the results of the laboratory evaluation, and the mines' experience with the CDPFs. Both CDPFs have operated over 2,000 h. One was evaluated after 1,646 h; its collection efficiency at one operating condition was 87.3 pct. After 2,135 h of operation it was removed from service because it was damaged. The second CDPF continues to be used after 2,328 h of service. The laboratory evaluation indicated its collection efficiency decreased after 1,584 h of use and its regeneration temperature increased from 405' C to 420' C. The mines' experiences with the two CDPFs varied. While being used on mine vehicles, both CDPFs became plugged with DPM on a number of occasions because of insufficient regeneration. CDPFs are capable of lowering DPM concentrations in diesel exhaust. They can also lower emissions of CO and HC, depending on the type of catalyst used. In this study, the performance of the CDPFs changed with use. Recommendations are given in this report for proper use of CDPFs in mines.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Phosphate is one of Florida's major industries. The US Bureau of Mines estimates it contributed $3 billion to the state's economy in 1981 and an additional $1.4 billion to the US economy. The Tennessee Valley Authority began employing geophysical well logging for foundation investigations in October 1973. Since that time more than 3,000 holes have been evaluated for engineering purposes. The Tennessee Valley Authority has not actively used geo-physical well logging for exploration of construction materials, but we feel that much of the information derived from geophysical logs for foundation exploration is applicable to the construction materials industry. This paper will then discuss geophysical logging as applied to foundation engineering and, by implication, the feasibility of use in construction materials exploration. The use of geophysical logging and percussion drilling instead of coring has greatly expanded TVA's data acquisition capabilities and has also resulted in substantial savings in time and money. Economical boreholes are obtained through the use of large percussion track drills (Figure 1). This equipment is capable of drilling through the overburden, setting steel casing on the top of rock, and drilling the rock beneath the casing. Holes as deep as 400 feet (121.9 m) have been drilled by this method.

Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.
