The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

Dow Water & Process Solutions (DW&PS) was approached by ASARCO Inc. to attempt to recover cobalt and copper from their copper solvent extraction (SX) raffinate. Cobalt is added to many copper electrowinning tankhouses to help to prevent lead electrode corrosion. With cobalt?s high price this can be a large expense. ASARCO has ore that contains a small amount of naturally occurring cobalt. Currently they have no way of capturing this high value metal from their leach or raffinate streams. DW&PS has some chelating resin technologies that should be able to help solve this problem.

A finite-element algorithm was developed for an axisymmetric heat-transfer problem involving phase change. The finite-element treatment of the phase-change problem was dealt with by using the enthalpy method. The finite-element algorithm was subsequently applied to model the heat exchange between mine ventilation air and frozen ground in the presence of roof bolts in an underground mine with permafrost. This paper analyzes a single bolt in the problem domain with the convection boundaries at the roof level of the mine airway. A short-term study, comprising the evaluation of roof bolting (friction-anchored type), was conducted, and recommendations were made regarding the applicability of roof bolts as a support system for a given thermal condition.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

Mercury and silver polythiocarbonate sludge that was generated from the pilot testing of optimized mercury removal from cyanidation pregnant eluate solutions prior to Merrill-Crowe recovery of gold and silver were tested for long term stability at Newmont Metallurgical Services. Sludge samples were mixed with heap leach residue to simulate disposal of the sludge in spent or active areas of the heaps and leached for twenty weeks with water and cyanide leaching solution, respectively. Leach testing results are presented as well as analysis of the sludge using scanning electron microscope techniques down to the <1000 nanometer scale.

The San Manuel oxide ore reserve ranges in depth from being exposed on the surface to lying 1000 ft. beneath a conglomerate layer all of which is confined in the subsidence zone of an active sulfide block caving operation. Present day recovery of the oxide copper values is either by open pit mining-dump leaching, or in-situ leaching of the oxide ore using dilute sulfuric acid solutions and solvent extraction/electrowinning processing of the pregnant leach solutions. Future plans are for continuation of leaching with expansion of reserves and increased processing rates. The state of the mining industry and copper in particular has not been good for a number of years. All of the producers that are still operating have made major adjustments in order to remain competitive. Magma Copper Co. is no exception.

"INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

The purpose of geochemical research in the Alabama copper belt is to re-evaluate geochemical prospecting methods as related to igneous and metamorphic rocks in a humid climate. It is also a correlation of laboratory research on copper mineral solubility with geochemical anomalies over known mineral deposits. Geochemical prospecting in warm humid climates involves different problems and conditions than geochemical prospecting in semiarid areas. Stems and others (1972) reported soil surveys in a humid tropical environment in Bahia, Brazil, were not effective in outlining areas of copper mineralization. Clarke (1971) reported false anomalies in lateritic soils in Alabama over mafic rocks. Bjorklund (1971) reported biogeochemical sampling in Finland was ineffective in detailed work outlining potential mineralized areas, although it may serve to indicate regional areas of high mineral potential. During this investigation, water, stream sediments, residual soil, and organic matter, mainly twigs, were collected from three known copper-mineralized areas. Samples were selected so as to cross mineralized outcrops and results were correlated with copper stability charts as reported by Silman (1958) and Schmitt (1962). The geochemical research performed in Alabama should be applicable to other humid areas. Geologic, Climatic, and Pedologic Setting The area of investigation is in the southern end of the Appalachian eugosyncline in eastern Alabama. It includes the Hatchet Creek prospect, Pyriton mining district, and Stone Hill copper mine. The copper mineralization is in calcium-rich metasediments that lie along the western flank of a high rank metamorphic belt. All three deposits are in the uplands of the Ashland Plateau section of the Piedmont physiographic province. The Hatchet Creek copper prospect (Clarke, 1963; 1971) consists of three mineralized areas that contain pyrrhotite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite in small crisscrossing veinlets.

Progressive Design-Build is becoming a more common delivery method in the tunneling industry. This approach allows the Owner to select a design-builder primarily based on qualification instead of lowest price. The delivery method promotes flexibility and collaboration at all levels from the initial design stage through construction. Using the example of the Atlanta Airport Plane Train Tunnel West Extension, value-added risk management was added during the initial design phase with an independent reviewer. This paper presents the independent reviewer transitioning from constructability review in the very early stages of design to independent design verification to on-site supervision during construction.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

Gold is easily mobilized at temperatures within range 600-11OO°C by gases such as Cl2, CO, H2S, in gas mixtures, at low pressures. Such gases are relevant to conditions of granulite facies metaomorphism in environments of magma underplating. These observations suggest an efficient mechanism for moving gold to the upper crust during major thermal events. The efficiency of precipitation of gold at lower temperatures is related to available mineral surfaces and pyrite appears to be an excellent substrate for gold precipitation.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Carpco has recently evaluated the use of various mineral processing techniques for secondary materials recovery. These applications include recycled foundry sands, plastics and secondary metals. This paper describes different recycling applications and the associated separation solutions. Results from extensive laboratory-and pilot-scale test work in each area are discussed. Industrial installations resulting from this test work will be presented. A detailed description of an industrial installation patented by Carpco for the recovery of plastic and metallics from current waste by-products is presented.

The efficient and effective utilization of hydraulic excavators relies on, among other factors, a better understanding of the formation resistance during the excavation process. Studies on hydraulic shovel excavators have focused on optimizing the digging process by considering the reaction of the boom, stick and bucket, and analyzing the resulting moments at the shovel’s front-end joints. These studies failed to understand resistive forces from a statistical viewpoint. The purpose of this paper is to develop machine-learning models capable of predicting the formation of resistive forces during shovel excavation. The shovel’s excavation was simulated in the PFC 5.0 environment using a typical field-size hydraulic shovel bucket to generate the shovel contact forces required to overcome formation resistance

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. In this paper, the research effort in simulating the operation of underground coarse-coal hydrotransport systems (UCCHS) is summarized. The equipment of the system to be simulated is already optimally selected by using an analytical optimization model. The purpose of the simulation model is to test the performance of the system and to obtain the distribution of the operating parameters such as water and power consumption, amount of slurry delivered to the preparation plant, etc. Knowledge of the distribution of these parameters is essential for the efficiency of the design and the operation of the system.

The paper presents a description of the procedures that were used to generate a ventilation criterion based on measurements of ambient mine air exhaust pollutant gases and ventilation airflow quantities. Today&apos;s economics dictate that a ventilation requirement be based on actual operating conditions. This will assure optimum economics and a safe working environment at the same time. The paper presents a methodology by which a ventilation requirement is based on the average maximum expected concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) that equipment operators in one of our Southeast Missouri mines will be subjected to. A graph has been generated whereby the expected maximum levels of NO, NO2, CO and CO2 are plotted against the ventilation quantity of a mine stope.

Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.

The purpose of this paper is to describe certain features of the uranium deposits of the South San Juan Basin, and to suggest a mode of origin for the deposits which is consistent with the data. A series of photographs is included at the end of the paper to illustrate the nature of the ore bodies. Since the general geology of the Grants Region is well described in the literature, it will be only briefly reviewed, and the time will be spent instead on the morphology, spatial relations, and geochemistry of the ore deposits. Part of this material is original, but data and ideas have been taken from a variety of sources, including the literature and the personnel of the USGS, the AEC, and many of the operating companies of the South San Juan Basin. I gratefully acknowledge these sources. The accuracy of the data and the conclusions presented here are my own responsibility, however.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.
