The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

Physicochemical properties of copper electrolytes are a strong fundamental consideration in electrodeposition processes during electro-purification and recovery of copper. Their influence extends to mass transfer as well as energy consumption during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the influence of electrolyte composition on electrolyte physicochemical properties was investigated to review the existing literature data. This review of data is considered necessary as more and more electrowinning models are being developed for process prediction and optimisation and a need of such data is required for accurate prediction of physicochemical properties. The major components of importance to the formation of smooth high-quality and high-purity copper cathodes at optimum current efficiency are considered the species in solution. These include Cu ions, Fe ions (major impurity), H2SO4, and a smoothing agent additive. A 5-factor, 2- and 3-level experimental design was employed to determine the effect of copper (35 and 45 g/l), sulphuric acid (160 and 180 g/l), iron (1, 3, and 6 g/l), polyacrylamide additive (2, 5, and 10 mg/ l), and temperature (45 and 55 °C) on electrolyte density, conductivity, and the diffusion coefficient in synthetic copper electrowinning electrolytes. The major species in a copper electrowinning electrolyte are found to be the most relevant for prediction of physicochemical properties. These results indicate that relatively simple empirical models are sufficient for modelling of the electrolyte domain in electrowinning, without the need for the generation of vast amounts of complex experimental data.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

We evaluate the exploration effort by diamond drilling for zinc in central Tennessee and southern Kentucky through a statistical analysis comparing the Middle Tennessee district with the older Tri-State and Upper Mississippi Valley districts. All of the ore deposits are of the Mississippi Valley type and are similar geologically. Through statistical analyses we attempt to answer these questions: Had the drilling density in the Middle Tennessee district been applied to the Tri-State district, how much of the ore in the Tri-State would have been discovered? Had this drilling been done in the Upper Mississippi Valley district, how much of the ore in that district would have been found? Which of these two older districts does Middle Tennessee more closely resemble in intensity of zinc mineralization? Is more drilling warranted in the Middle Tennessee district? Our data base includes tonnage and area distributions of ore deposits in the Tri-State dis¬trict, sizes of ore bodies and probabilities of their recognition in the three districts, and data for the Elmwood mine in the Middle Tennessee district. Our statistical analysis considers the consequences of drilling holes in the three districts on square grids at coarse, intermediate, and fine spacings. We conclude that the drilling pattern assumed for Middle Tennessee would have found some but not all of the ore in the two older districts. We believe that in intensity of mineralization Middle Tennessee more closely resembles the Tri-State than the Upper Mississippi Valley district, and that more drilling is warranted in the Middle Tennessee district.

In 1967 the US Congress passed the "Clean Air Act." This act was amended in 1970. As a result it soon became obvious that American industries were going to have to make significant changes in their methods of operation to be able to comply with quickly developing federal regulations. One of the first regulations developed was on sulfur dioxide. For this reason, the nonferrous smelting industry was immediately affected by these new regulations. This is true because the smelting process produces sulfur dioxide as a natural product of combustion when the sulfur-bearing ore is oxidized to purify the metal. The federal government's approach for setting standards included public hearings at which government, industry, and private citizens were allowed to make comments. For this reason, it was apparent to Kennecott's Metal Mining Div. that it was desirable to make a maximum effort in working with the agency to see that correct input was provided at the hearings to assist the government in setting fair and realistic standards. It was also obvious that more complete monitoring would be required. It soon became apparent that the efforts required input from many levels of the corporation from the chief executive to the plant operators. In order to accomplish both the administrative and the technical needs, an organization was needed that could respond quickly to these needs, obtain information from diverse sources, and bring it to focus in an organized approach to the problem.

The world’s climate today has changed compared to 10 or 20 years ago. Many countries face water shortages; water sourcing for mining activities has become harder to secure. ESG’s focus on the industry has made us more aware of the need to preserve and responsibly use the water needed for wet processing in our milling and sorting activities. In a recent greenfield project in South Australia, 10 Gigalitres per annum would be required to process 5Mtpa of magnetite [1]. Published information indicates that the mining industry consumes approximately 12 EJ per year—or 3.5% of total global final energy consumption globally [2] or 3.33 trillion kilowatt hrs. This energy consumption is significant, considering the critical role mining plays in extracting and processing essential minerals for economic development and human progress. The perception of the mining industry is that not only does it consume significant power, but it also consumes a lot of the freshwater in the world. In fact, it consumes approximately 5% [3] of the total freshwater demand. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2050, 60% of the world’s population will be living in countries that are classed as water-stressed [3]. As more and more emphasis is placed on renewable energy sources, the amount of water used in mineral processing will increase because more and more raw materials require a water-intensive process. This increases the pressure on the mining industry to try and find water-saving initiatives. As part of this review, recent advancements in magnets have enabled magnetite processing facilities to achieve between 30 to 40% dry gangue material rejection before the wet beneficiation process (grinding and sorting). This reduction in energy consumption allows the reduction of energy consumption. Secondly, there is less material ground in the mills, which requires less water for mineral downstream processing.

Due to the current cost and availability of crude oil in Brazil, Samarco Mineracao S. A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the short-term scheduling of open pit mines is formulated. The proposed model aims at sequencing the blocks extraction over multiple short-term periods. The model takes into account multiple processes, waste dumps, and multiple stockpiles. The short-term scheduler makes a decision on the period, destination, and route that ore and waste are supposed to take to minimize costs while meeting all the mining and processing constraints. The destinations of the extracted materials are also controlled by their rock types. A monthly short-term production scheduling case study of an iron ore deposit is carried out over a year to validate the model.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft 3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunnelling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-ft) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. An extensive and essential pre-excavation drilling and grouting program was performed in all reaches of the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, located north of San Bernardino, CA. This program supported the advance of two hybrid hard rock TBMs though extremely challenging ground conditions under substantial ground cover and up to 27 bar (900 ft) of ground water pressure. The well known San Andreas Fault lies nearby and has greatly influenced the local geological conditions. This paper will describe the means, methods and materials used throughout the numerous phases of the pre-excavation grouting program. It will also describe many versatile, flexible and innovative drilling and grouting methods and equipment systems utilized to improve performance, save time and costs in constantly changing geological conditions. Considerable lessons learned have been learned while overcoming some extremely formidable ground conditions and safely advancing the tunnels.

The city of Indianapolis has more than 25,000 homes currently on septic systems. Many of these systems do not function well because of their age and surrounding soil conditions. As Indianapolis has worked to eliminate septic systems and install sanitary sewers in large unsewered areas on the north-west side, capacity of the existing Belmont North Interceptor (BNI) became a concern. The BNI system currently services an area of approximately 80 km2 (31 sq miles) located within the northwest quadrant of the city (Fig. 1). Monitoring of the existing interceptor indicated portions of the sys-tem flowing half- to two-thirds full during dry weather conditions and surcharging during some wet weather conditions. Further analysis of the BNI based on growth projections coupled with increased sewershed yield resulting from the city?s septic tank elimination program (STEP) indicated dry-weather flows could potentially triple over the next 20 years. New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

Excessive noise has long been a hazard in the coal-mining industry. Studies conducted during both the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s consistently show that hearing hearing loss within the mining industry persists, in spite of regulatory requirements and sampling technology advances. When MSHA’s new health standards to protect miners from hearing loss took effect in September 2000, the potential developed to re-evaluate sampling approaches with regard to noise-source hazards, such as task-based methods. This paper describes results from a Penn State research project currently being conducted at an underground coal mine. Each occupation was reviewed, and a list of tasks or processes performed by each was generated. Traditional personal noise dosimetry, static sound pressure levels, and equipment sound mappings have been performed. Job tasks indicating the greatest levels of daily noise exposure and contributions to noise dose have been identified and will be discussed.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it's Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. "Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations refines molybdenum disulfide in a ferric chloride leach to remove impurities. To understand bottlenecks in the leach process and the true capacity of the leach system, a cross-functional team was established to look at theoretical models, kinetics of the leaching process, equipment limitations and operational strategies. A series of in-plant tests were run which resulted in a road map for improved throughput. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component in the steel industry, is often found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Molybdenum disulfide deposits can exist as standalone components in an ore body, or can also be found within copper porphyry nodes. Processing for these copper/molybdenum porphyry ore bodies involves a first stage of flotation to produce a bulk concentrate before separation of the copper and molybdenum concentrates in a second stage of flotation. In this second stage of flotation, a reagent is added to suppress the copper particles, while allowing the molybdenum disulfide particles to remain hydrophobic and continue to float. This separation is very good at keeping the molybdenum out of the copper concentrate; however a portion of the copper continues to float through the circuit. As a result, there is typically some amount of copper in the final molybdenum concentrate. This copper must be removed in order for the molybdenum disulfide product to meet product quality specifications. Once the raw molybdenum disulfide product has been made, a separate process must be applied to remove any copper, lead, or other impurities remaining in the concentrate. This process usually involves the selective leaching of impurities out of the bulk solid. Gupta mentions three specific types of leaching agents, sodium cyanide, ferric chloride, and hydrochloric acid for the removal of sulfide impurities. Sodium cyanide is useful for the removal of copper compounds such as bornite, covellite, and chalcocite.1 Sodium cyanide solution dissolves these copper compounds, and the remaining molybdenum solids are filtered to produce a pure molybdenum concentrate. Ferric chloride works similar to that of sodium cyanide, but is particularly efficient in removing chalcopyrite and galena compounds. These compounds are easily chlorinated at elevated temperatures, producing copper chloride and lead chloride, through the reactions presented below:"

The gypsum industry makes significant contribution to the wealth of our nation. This non-metallic mineral ranks in the highest order with America's most precious resources. Evidence of this is borne out by the fact that gypsum is a vitally necessary element in the building, industrial and agricultural industries. In 1967, the United States consumed 14 million tons of this valuable ore. Of .this amount 69% was required by the building industry for the manufacture of building materials. An additional 21% was directed to the industrial market, for the manufacture of Portland Cement and for other industrial uses. The remaining 10% was used for agricultural purposes.

Dynamic permeability is a significant hydrologic condition associated with in-situ leaching at the Cyprus Casa Grande operations. Several factors contribute to changes in the permeability conditions. They are: 1) hydraulically induced fracture development, 2) geochemical changes during leaching in the rock matrix, and 3) changes in the relative degree of saturation of the deposit. Dynamic permeability conditions were evaluated using available pressure and flow rates from the 58 injection and recovery wells obtained over one year period. A finite element, 2-D hydrologic model called INVERT which is designed to estimate aquifer parameters under transient and steady state flow conditions was used for the investigation. The permeability conditions during 7 different steady state intervals throughout the one year time frame were determined. The results confirm that big changes in permeability occur as a function of time as well as a function of injection pressure condition.

Previous studies on semi-soluble minerals such as calcite (1) and apatite(2) and sparingly soluble minerals such as quartz (3,4) have given evidence for significant changes in their electrokinetic properties as a function of aging time. Such changes are relevant to mineral processing operations where the crushed ore particles might not have yet reached equili¬brium with the water that it is in contact with. In order that these changes be studied under controlled experimental conditions for long periods unattended or with fairly less intermittant attention, a streaming potential apparatus with an automatic streaming system was constructed. Also, a new streaming potential cell was incorporated into the system so that the effect of temperature, a variable coming into increasing usage in mineral processing operations(5), could also be studied. Conventional streaming cells(6) cannot be safely employed to conduct studies as a function of temperature since they have many glass joints that are prone to leakage, parti¬cularly under pressure, in the course of an experiment. This paper describes the new apparatus and some typical results that have been obtained with it far temperature effects.

Profit, product quality, speed of operations, reliability, operator confidence, safety and environmental improvements have all been enhanced as a result of the recently completed maintenance, renovation and construction program at Crown Central Petroleum Corporation?s (Crown?s) coke calcining unit at its Pasadena, Texas refinery. (Figure 1) BACKGROUND The calcining unit was built in 1969 - 1970 and has been operated continuously. Approximately 400 to 500 TPD of high quality metallurgical grade coke is manufactured, stored, and shipped to consumers. About 1/2 of the feed stock to the calciner is manufactured in Crown's coking unit and the remainder is received, via barges, from various sources. The green coke is off loaded from the barges with a conventional grab crane that discharges into a small travelling hopper over a conveyor belt that feeds a radial stacker, which forms a stockpile on the ground. The green coke, from the coking unit at the refinery, is moved to the calcining unit with front end loaders. Reclaiming from the stockpiles is also done with front end loaders. The coke is primarily handled by covered conveyor belts. The finished product is stored in steel silos and can be shipped via railroad cars, but the majority of it is shipped out in ocean going bulk carriers. Maintenance work in the calcining unit is performed by Crown's refinery maintenance department on an as needed, on call basis.

In this paper a new method for the arresting of tunnel explosions is presented. In the proposed technique, the on coming explosion is detected by a pressure sensitive device by a pre-determined rise in static pressure. The sensor then triggers a mechanism which causes the explosion door to be closed in a specially constructed concrete barrier zone. The doors are of a special construction and consist of perforated steel plates that allow part of the blast wave to be transmitted but do not allow the passage of the flame. A number of design parameters have been identified, including: the likely amplitudes of the transmitted/reflected pressure waves that would govern the explosion door pressure loading; thickness of the perforated steel packages; perforation dimensions; heat transfer across the door and other factors.
