Rod mills were developed, as a logical substitute for the rolls crusher when larger tonnages had to be handled, on a continuous basis. Today, with even larger tonnages to process, the trend is to install larger equipment, automate the plant and develop the highest availability possible, in order to cut costs. The rod mills, because of design limitations in size and speed 1'2, are not able to meet these new requirements. The autogenous mill was a timely development and serves as an excellent alternative for ores that are suitable to this type of grinding. When ores are not amenable to autogenous grinding, selection of a flowsheet is dictated by liberation characteristics and unit operations to be used for mineral recovery.. The following alternatives are available: (a) Multiple rod mills, capable of drawing no more than 2000 HP each, followed by ball mills. (b) Gyradisc crusher followed by two stages of ball mill grinding.3 (c) Tertiary crushing followed by closed circuit single stage ball mills grinding to approximately -100 mesh, as in the copper industry. The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

In the same way that a blueprint communicates information about a structure, a useful systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of computing systems. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where in the "bigger picture" a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: 1. The primary purpose of computer based systems relative to particular task or operation. 2. The relationship of systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies. 3. The relationship of systems relative to the organization and its objectives. 4. Indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allocated to support the organization. 5. The overall context in which new systems and technologies can be assessed for both their impact on current system and on the organization itself.

A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

The introduction of automation to mining has great potential to reduce safety and health risks by removing people from hazardous situations. However, automation changes the tasks performed by people and may introduce new tasks. For the system to function optimally, these tasks must be designed taking human abilities and limitations into account. Humansystems integration refers to systems engineering processes that ensure that human-related issues are adequately considered during system planning, design, development, and evaluation. During procurement of automated systems, a human-systems integration program plan should be prepared that describes the human-systems integration activities that will be performed to address each of the six core domains of human-systems integration: staffing, personnel, training, human factors engineering, safety, and health.

A new explanation of the scale dependency of the strength properties of rock is presented based on the theory of extremes. A review of past work on specimen size strength relationship is followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of the underlying theory of extremes and its relationship to the scale effect on the statistical properties of the strength distribution. It is shown that the weakest link theory is directly related to extremal statistics and properties of strength distributions of rock can be derived as a function of the specimen size. Three sets of Brazilian test data are used to demonstrate the use of this approach.

Of the various critics of federal energy and minerals policy we are hearing these days--and they are legion--few make their points more vividly than our fellow SME member and eloquent spokesman for the mineral industry. Mr. Eugene Guccione. In a moment of comparative mellowness. Mr. Guccione recently characterized Washington's time-honored legislative and bureaucratic machinery as a case of "...scientific illiterates asking the incompetents to do the unnecessary." I hope the prevailing industry view of government is not quite that harsh, and yet one cannot deny that government intervention is indeed pressing in on the mineral industry with increasing force. What is happening today in Washington and in state capitols will have enormous impact--both short and long term--on the future of coal and mineral production in the United States. Symptoms of this trend are everywhere. In the first place, there is a sentiment, widely held and still spreading, that the government must become involved-- that no matter what the problem, the solution lies in more government intervention. Free enterprise versus statist, reflex reaction organizations. When it cones to regulation in the resource field, there is too often a tendency to start out by assuming guilt on the part of the mineral industry. This can lead to laws governing mineral recovery that are more punitive than constructive...laws drawn up with little research into the scientific or economic considerations involved.

One of the first things we tell a potential new client is that they have only one chance to make a first impression with an Aboriginal community; all future communications and engagement will be predicated on that first impression. The key components of this most critical meeting are not your power point, your maps, or your draft plan for development ? they are instead a genuine, evident and clear demonstration of a sincere desire to develop a positive relationship that is based upon respect, and consideration and understanding of local communities and their interests, needs and desires. Relationship building is the foundation of proactive and positive consultation and accommodation with Aboriginal communities and the tone is set with the first meeting. C3 has refused more clients than we have accepted due most often to the fact that relationships between the company and the Aboriginal community have already devolved into a tense and toxic scenario. Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally and economically sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty confidence to invest in mineral exploration will be severely eroded. We all understand that substantive investments in exploration are required to increase the possibility of discovering, defining and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by Aboriginal Peoples and the mineral sector can provide the required business certainty and deliver social and economic benefits for local Aboriginal communities.

Depression of copper sulfides followed by MoS2 flotation is the most commonly practiced technique for Cu-MO separation. Although numerous organic depressants have been developed in the past, a majority of the currently used copper depressants are inorganic compounds (ex. NaHS, Nokes reagent, etc.). A unique advantage of organic depressants over the inorganic compounds is the potential versatility for design of the organic molecule to suit many requirements. The present study was initiated to systematically investigate the structure- activity relationships for a large number of organic complexing agents in comparison with the commonly used inorganic depressants that are often inefficient and hazardous. The results obtained in this study are discussed in light of the useful correlation obtained between practical solution redox potential and depressant activity. Several requirements, such as the presence of an active -SH and hydrophilic -OH or -COOH in the organic molecule, are identified for a reagent to be a satisfactory depressant. Some preliminary results on the desorbability (or destruction) of collector coating on the sulfide surfaces in the non-xanthate collector systems are also discussed.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.

Central system of ventilation, adopted almost universally in coal mines of India and elsewhere in the world, has often proved deficent in providing a cost effective solution to the acute ventilation problems of remote workings in many mines. Loss of air due to leakage through a number of stoppings, doors etc. and accumulation of heat and moisture by intake air on its way to a working through long and circuitous route are the main unavoidable reasons for low efficiency of the system, sluggish and oppressive ventilation of workings. Multi-zonal ventilation system using large diameter bore holes for feeding fresh air in the mine close to a working has been proposed as a viable economic alternative. The method promises to provide congenial environment at working faces without resorting to air conditioning or use of booster fan. Optimum location and diameter of bore holes as well as general design procedure have been dealt in the paper. Finally, the technical as well as economic advantages of the method over the conventional design have been highlighted with the help of a case study where ventilation system of an extensive shallow mine in Central India has been redesigned according to the old and the new concepts. The methodology is general enough for adoption elsewhere in other mines under similar circumstances.

Introduction The history of mining machine development has been and is one of "bigger is better." While this may not always be true, it is currently the only approach open to machine designers without specific in situ cutting force information. The US Bureau of Mines has tried to modify this approach by supporting research, both in the laboratory and in field tests, that demonstrates that bigger is only better if the equipment is used correctly. In-house research has shown conclusively that deeper cutting reduces both dust and energy (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). This approach has been applied to a large Lee-Norse (LN456) continuous mining machine, which confirmed that slow deep cutting is beneficial and does not have a negative effect on production (Black and Rounds, 1977; Black et al., 1978). Specific in situ engineering data needed on coal cutting forces have not, however, been obtained by field tests with the LN456. Although the machine was instrumented to obtain data on one seam, it would be impractical to move the machine from mine to mine. It became apparent that a portable, easy to use device was needed for obtaining coal cutting forces in situ. Such a device could provide the engineering data needed by manufacturers, the site-specific cutting information needed by operators, and a field research tool to establish correlation with laboratory cutting tests. Design and Development According to a set of design guidelines established by the Bureau, the proposed device should be able to measure cutting forces directly with standard coal cutting bits, be transportable by two miners, and be self-contained. These guidelines were given to Ingersoll-Rand Research Inc. (IRRI). The contractor performed a rigorous review of 16 existing in situ portable tester designs, none of which could use a standard coal cutting bit to measure cutting force directly. These included a wide range of devices, all of which are discussed in the final report (Banerjee and Wisner, 1982). A series of design tradeoffs were established to satisfy initial design guidelines. The final deci¬sion was heavily weighted by an industry survey to determine the preferred concept from four man¬ufacturers and four operators. To assure ease of use with maximum information, all respondents wanted a linear cutting device that could work in seams down to 1 m (40 in.). The final design choice was between a linear and a rotary tester. The rotary tester would cut on an arc in the same manner as a rotary drum machine. It had several faults, however, that could not be resolved within the scope of this contract. The worst was related to arc cutting (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). Since any bit cutting on arc enters the coal at zero depth, goes to maximum depth only at the horizontal centerline, and exits at zero, maximum cutting force is obtained only at the instant the bit crosses the horizontal centerline. This centerline peak response would require that many replications be made with an arc-type cutter to get reliable force information. The arc-type tester would require extensive face preparation to establish the cutting path and extensive wasted clearing cuts to advance the device for additional layers of cuts. The linear tester could be mounted directly on any face or rib with only minor preparation. By its nature, a linear cut at a constant depth provides multiple peak force data over the length of the cut, thus reducing the required number of replications. Precambrian granitic pegmatites on the west, south west, south and southeast slopes of Storm Mountain, Larimer County, northern Colorado, were explored and mapped geologically 1956-1959. The area between Crystal Mountain Mining District on the north and Hyatt pegmatite mine area on the south was nearly inaccessible until a company built an access road, which was completed in 1959, into Roosevelt National Forest and its jeep-type roads. The area is extremely rugged, rising from some 6,000 feet on the highway at Drake, on Big Thompson River, to an altitude of over 10,000 feet at the summit ridge of Storm Mountain. Almost innumerable pegmatites of every possible type of granitic pegmatite intrusion infest the Precambrian gneisses and schists of the southwest-tilted fault block of Storm Mountain. The major bodies stand at least 100 to 200, feet high above the surrounding forest floor. Core drilling has shown that some extend to at least 200 feet below the surface. They blunt out at the southwest, some keel out below and others are faulted out at their southwest ends. Strike length ranges from 200 to 600 feet. The massive bulky bodies have nearly vertical walls. Contents are zoned or ribboned and layered. They consist of local commercial bodies of beryl, potash feldspar, mica, uranium minerals and quartz. As yet no lithium minerals have been encountered.

Valuations can be molded, twisted and misinterpreted. Cases of spurious scope setting; limits to the information or access by the valuer; difficulties with the lack of comparative valuations; inappropriate valuation methods and outright speculations are described. None should be accepted by an experienced, independent minerals valuer. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (TheAusIMM) is working on a Valmin Code for which a Manual of Best Practice and Valuation Guidelines may be developed.

INTRODUCTION Project Description The Silver Line is a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line and is Boston?s newest transit service. Silver Line Phase I extends along Washington Street entirely on the surface in priority bus lanes from Dudley Station in Roxbury through the South End and Chinatown neighborhoods to downtown Boston. The Phase I opened in July 2002. Silver Line Phase II consists of an underground transit tunnel from South Station to the South Boston Waterfront with underground stations at Courthouse and World Trade Center to Silver Line Way east of D Street. Phase II continues through the Ted Williams Tunnel to all the terminals at Logan Airport, and on the surface to the Boston Marine Industrial Park and City Point. Phase II opened in December 2004. Silver Line Phase III is a one mile tunnel connection to the existing Phase II tunnel in the vicinity of South Station and will eventually portal on Tremont Street just north of Marginal Road. After leaving the portal, the buses will use dedicated bus only lanes on the surface roadway network to connect to the Phase I service. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the Silver Line upon completion of the Phase III project.

"The city of Minneapolis contracted with CDM Smith to update and provide a conceptual design for improvements to mitigate surcharge flooding in the Central City Storm Water Tunnel System (CCSTS). As a part of the project, CDM Smith conducted a field survey and condition assessment of the existing tunnel system. Information from the survey was then used to update the existing XPSWMM model and develop system wide alternatives.The CCSTS provides storm-water runoff drainage for nearly the entire area of the city’s downtown commercial district. The system consists of deep storm-water tunnels constructed in the St. Peter Sandstone, approximately 21 m (70 ft) below the street’s surface. The primary tunnels comprising the Central City storm water tunnel system are located below Hennepin Avenue, Nicollet Mall, Lesalle Avenue, Marquette Avenue South, 2nd Avenue South, South 5th Street, Washington Avenue South, Portland Avenue South, 2nd Street South, and Chicago Avenue South, as shown in Fig. 1. This network of tunnels conveys the runoff from a 305-acre tributary area that is generally bound by Hennepin Avenue and 1st Avenue North to the east, 12th Street to the south, 4th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South to the west, and 2nd Street South. These tunnels were constructed between 1936 and 1940, except for the Marquette Avenue South tunnel, which was constructed between 1963 and 1964.The CCSTS operates as a gravity flow system. These tunnels were constructed within the St. Peter Sandstone layer of bedrock and emerge from the bedrock at the Mississippi River below St. Anthony Falls. The Central City and the adjacent Chicago Avenue tunnel system converge into a single outfall at the Mississippi River. The runoff discharges from the converged outfall to a side channel of the Mississippi River, called a tailrace, located near the Guthrie Theater. The Minneapolis Division of Surface Water and Sewers provided 32 historic plats detailing the plan and profile of the tunnel system.The tunnel plans show nine different cross-section configurations. Eight configurations within the overall system generally show the same geometric “cathedral” shape with the inside dimensions varying from 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft) in width and 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft) in height. For analysis, these eight configurations were reduced to three configurations with regards to tunnel liner, cross-sectional area and support. For simplicity, the three configurations are described according to the three types of tunnel support used during construction: none required, light timber and heavy timber"
