The recent expansion of our cities into hilly areas, particularly on the Pacific Coast, has resulted in damage or destruction of many homes due to geological problems such as landslides, soil creep, erosion, subsidence, or groundwater seepage. In southern California, landslides are the principal cause of damage and attention is focused on them. Landslides have occurred due to the reactivation of old slide masses, or have been caused by grading and increased water, infiltration resulting from development.. Reactivation of a portion of the ancient Portuguese Bend landslide in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, affected approximately 150 homes. A common type of new failure' occurs when grading has undercut bedding or other essentially planar surfaces so that they dip unsupported out of slope. Other slides have occurred due to the inherent weakness of the material involved. Preventive measures undertaken to eliminate damage in the southern California area have. included areal geologic mapping programs-in-advance of development, enacting or strengthening grading codes, and requiring extensive studies by consulting geologists and soils engineers both during the design stage and during construction. In the design stage, proposed cuts are frequently flattened, lowered or reorientated. Frequently, due to the high cost of land, they are supported by compacted fill buttresses. As a result of these measures, the geologic environment has a major effect on the feasibility, design, and development of, a very substantial percentage of tracts or individual homes.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "This article addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of coal exploration results, coal resources and coal reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or saleable tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal — therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (ROM) and saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information.Competent or qualified persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provided. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their public reports, which is as comprehensive as possible (CRIRSCO, 2013).” However, too often this isn’t the case, and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed.According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document, “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the saleable coal reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” An example as to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are detailed in the followint paragraphs. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a calorific value (CV) range of 19 to 20 MJ/ kg, an ash content between 29 and 34 percent and volatiles between 20 to 21 percent. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities, such as a CV range of 22 to 23 MJ/kg, an ash content between 20 and 28 percent and volatiles between 22 to 23 percent. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it is not just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station (Chetty, 2010).” Sulfur content is another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1 percent sulfur."

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

Sulphuric acid leaching is the most common method of recovering uranium from its ores and in the following discussion various alternative low cost routes are investigated for recovering uranium from milled ore acid leach liquors. Historically uranium has been recovered from dilute impure leach liquors by packed bed ion exchange (IX), solvent extraction (SX) or a combination of both. All three process routes as commonly practised require complete separation of leached solids and liquids, as well as extensive solids washing in order to reduce soluble uranium losses to a minimum. Separation and washing are costly and often require equipment covering large areas of land. The size and capital cost of the post leach solids washing operation is controlled by the ease of washing the slimes fraction of the ore and the key to the problem of cost reduction, as many others have realised, lies in the ability to separate the slimes fraction of the ore from the more easily washed sands, to wash the sands in low cost equipment and to recover uranium from the slimes stream. Sands and slimes are usually defined in this context as the material larger than, and smaller than, 325 mesh (44 microns). The proposed flowsheets which minimise solid-liquid separation and washing have usually incorporated ion exchange (Refs 1,2,3), and resin in pulp is in fact practised in several mills in the USA (Ref 1). The resins used in these flowsheets and [cranium] recovery throughout the world have been strong base resins which load rapidly and are moderately selective for the uranyl sulphate complex anion over the range of pH which is conveniently achieved in an acid leach operation. Strong base resins are, however, not as selective as weak base resins and weak base liquid reagents owing to the adsorption of competing anions, some of which find their way into the product while others act as resins poisons. Ion exchange using strong base resins must therefore be followed by a more selective weak base SX purification step if pure yellow cake is required.

Aragonite "sand," an oolitic lime-stone, is distributed throughout the Bahamas on the Grand Bahama Bank, adjacent to Southeast Florida. Bahamian deposits hold 75-100 billion tons of recoverable Aragonite. Aragonite's precipitation from seawater over 700 years ago assures low contaminates, making it a pure material for such industries as cement, glass, etc. A 90-acre, man-made production island was built south of Bimini, adjacent to ocean shipping channels mining is by cutterhead, suction dredge, dewatering, and stockpiling for further drainage and shipping. Aragonite is transferred to the U. S. East and Gulf Coasts via bulk carriers to points of sale.

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. Cognitive representations and misconceptions of flow through circuits is an area which has received little attention from science educators, cognitive psychologists, or accident investigators. Misconceptions are also called Aristotelian thinking. They involve a person using primitive unscientific ways of reasoning to make decisions about events (Piaget, 1929; Nussbaum & Novick, 1982; McCloskey, 1983). The use of such primitive concepts leads to errors in reasoning about scientific and technical problems. The existence of misconceptions is well documented among children, adolescents, and adults involved in learning science concepts (Piaget, 1929; Cole & Raven, 1969; Clement, 1982; Mistrell, 1982; McDermott, 1984; Richardson, 1987). Concepts of flow through circuits are important because miners' conceptual errors about these aspects may be, in part, responsible for two fatal mine disasters. On at least two separate occasions, methane gas explosions occurred in underground mines when separate ventilation systems were connected (Elam, Fuller, Carter, Cavanaugh, Fesak & Painter, 1983; Fesak & Cavanaugh, 1984). A review of these disasters indicates that conceptual errors made by miners may have resulted in the accidents (Cole, Wala, Haley, & Vaught, 1987). In this study, co-author Andrzej Wala, stated that his research had "identified conceptual errors that may have caused the miners in these disasters to make fatal mistakes" (Cole et al. 1987), p. 167. Further exploration of these conceptual errors by Wala has led to the hypothesis that misconceptions of basic aspects of flow distribution changes in mine ventilation circuits, are at least, in part, responsible for some mine disasters caused by errors in ventilation systems (Wala & Cole, 1987). Why should these conceptual errors occur? Ausubel (1963) suggested that students come to a new area of study with their own conceptions or preconceptions about how a process operates. Furthermore, these preconceptions may be in conflict with the empirical data from the discipline. In such cases, learning becomes a process in which new concepts must displace or be re-molded from stable concepts that the student has constructed over many years (Clement, 1982). Given the existing research with misconceptions and the work of Wala and Cole (1987), it was hypothesized that experienced miners; either working miners, students of mining engineering, or professional mining engineers, harbored misconceptions about the formal or conceptual aspects of mine ventilation circuits. The misconceptions hypothesized to exist involved flow distribution changes in complex mine ventilation circuits; specifically, how does flow distribution change when a ventilation circuit pathway is altered? Given this information, the following research questions were proposed. Research Questions 1. Do experienced miners and mining engineers harbor misconceptions about mine ventilation systems? Introduction Tailings disposal methods used by the mining industry include the use of on-land impoundments, surface and underground mine backfill and marine disposal. The latter method, where applicable and under certain circumstances, can be the most economical and best environmental option. The term marine disposal is used to describe deposition of tailings in the open ocean, coastal waters, fjords and inland lakes. A major element in planning and designing a marine outfall is the assessment of its potential environmental impacts. The nature of the disposed tailings, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the receiving water body must be carefully assessed prior to deciding whether marine disposal is an acceptable option for a particular project. During the last decade, the North American mining industry has demonstrated a commitment to studying potential adverse environmental impacts of marine tailings disposal and to continue monitoring of the receiving waters. Extensive monitoring programs have been undertaken by Canadian mines. Marine tailings disposal is not used in the United States today. One of the largest U.S. mines proposing to use this option is the Quartz Hill mine of U.S. Borax in Southeastern Alaska. To assure the regulatory agencies and the public of the viability and acceptability of this option, U.S. Borax undertook an extensive program of environmental studies aimed at assessing the impact of marine tailings disposal. This program was part of the feasibility and environmental permitting studies conducted by Bechtel Civil & Minerals, Inc, on behalf of U.S. Borax. Due to the unique nature of the proposed tailings disposal system, a Board of Consultants was established. The Board assisted in planning the modeling and field program and reviewed ongoing work. This paper outlines the basic elements of the marine tailings disposal study program which can be viewed as a prototype for similar studies elsewhere. Background The Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit is located on a knoll in an elevated valley in a mountainous region of southeast Alaska, about 45 miles east of Ketchikan (Figure 1).

This paper presents a preliminary phase of a study being conducted by the Department of Geochemistry of the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables in the vicinity of the Pachuca-Real del Monte Mining District. This district is located in central Mexico, about 100 km northeast of Mexico City. It has been in operation for the past 450 years and has produced about 38 million kg of silver and about 190 thousand kg of gold. At the present it is being worked by the state owned mining company of Real del Monte and Pachuca. The rocks of the area consist mainly of Tertiary volcanics, ranging in age from early Oligocene to late Pliocene. Ore bodies are recognized as epithermal, vein type fracture fillings. The main ore minerals are argentite and acanthite normally accompanied by base metal sulphides, Gold is present in small amounts as native gold and in other minerals. Orientation geochemical studies performed on soil and rocks over known veins in the district, showed zinc to be the best indicator. Lead and silver anomalies are restricted to the immediate vicinity of the veins, mercury shows the mineralized structures only when the "C" horizon is sampled, while antimony gave erratic values. The El Chico area is about 10 km north of the Pachuca-Real del Monte district and covers approximately 400 sq km. Geological evidence indicated the possibility of an extension of the Pachuca ore bodies in this area. Results obtained from soil and rock samples from El Chico, showed several anomalous area. Detailed investigations proved these anomalies to be related to faults and fractures which in several cases have been found to be mineralized. Drilling is planned with preliminary results expected by late 1974.

Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." As energy requirements in the United States expand with the growth of the Nation, use of coal also can be expected to increase. This optimistic outlook for the coal industry is based on our vast reserves of high quality coals and the possibility of converting coal to end uses other than electricity and metallurgical coke. Potentially, millions of tons of coal might be needed in the form of gas and liquid fuels to supplement our reserves and imports of these natural products. Exactly when they will enter the economy on a large scale depends on many factors. On January 1, 1960, the estimated remaining reserves of coal were 1-1/2 trillion tons, about 50 percent of which is bituminous coal. In 1965, the production of bituminous coal and lignite passed the 500-million-ton mark, emphasizing the steady upward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons, and if the present rate of increase continues within the next five years, output should pass the alltime high of 631 million tons achieved in 1947.

Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor overburden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth’s surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than , in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. During initial mining operations at the Colosseum gold mine, discrepancies between the average blasthole grades and mill-head grades were quite large. In December 1987, mill-head grades averaged 39% lower than corre¬sponding estimates from the blastholes. The correlation between average blasthole grade and mill-head grade had an r-value of 0.015. The magnitude of the discrepancy and the lack of correspondence between estimated and actual grades led to a series of investigations of the sampling system, the effect of blast movement of the ore, and the estimation methodology. The discrepancy between blasthole grades and mill-head grades had been reduced by about half on a percentage basis at the conclusion of these studies. Ongoing studies have produced changes that reduced this discrepancy to its present level of less than 10%. Geology The Colosseum mine is within the Clark Mountain mining district about 68 km (42 miles) southwest of Las Vegas, NV in San Bernardino County, CA. Gold mineralization at the deposit is hosted in two 152 m x 213 m (500 ft x 700 ft) interconnected, rhyolitic intrusive breccia pipes that intruded Pre¬cambrian crystalline basement rocks and overlying Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Subsequent erosion (deroofing) of all of the Paleozoic section and a portion of the Precambrian section has exposed the pipes to the present level (probably a significant depth in the original breccia pipe system). Lithologies exhibited within the breccia pipe complexes include rhyolitic felsite, and breccias of felsite and wall/ country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus Precambrian granite-gneiss fragments in an aphanitic felsite matrix to crosscutting breccias of felsite, Precambrian granite-gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in a matrix of finely comminuted material of the same composition. All the lithologies in and around the breccia pipes exhibit moderate to intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration, with sericite and pyrite the dominant visual alteration minerals. Gold at the Colosseum mine is generally submicroscopic and associated with sulfide mineralization, chiefly pyrite. It occurs as free gold, with minor alloyed silver. It is primarily in contact with pyrite in fractures or along pyrite grain edges. Secondarily, it appears as isolated particles in quartz and other gangue minerals but spatially always close to pyrite, and rarely as particles encased in euhedral pyrite. The pyrite mineralization and minor base metal sulfides occur in three distinct styles: as disseminations, as open space or vein/fracture filling, and in breccia clasts replacing dolomite. The pyrite megascopically ranges from absent to 30% of rock volume within the breccia pipes. Although the gold at Colosseum is apparently spatially and geochemically associated with pyrite, there is only a general proportional relationship between pyrite content and gold content. Sometimes, a high volume percentage of pyrite has only geochemically anomalous gold. This makes visual pyrite only a general grade control tool and not a specific tool. This further makes the ore control process at Colosseum all the more difficult. Initial grade control procedure Initial grade control was based on blasthole samples collected in two stages by an "automatic" sample collection device (rocket sampler). A sample was collected for the top 3 m (10 ft) in a hole. The bag was then changed so that a sample was collected for the lower 3 m (10 ft). Each sample was prepared and fire assayed to determine the grade. Large discrepancies were sometimes noted in the assays of top and bottom samples. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a postmining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64 degrees, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457 m wide and 3657 m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. As the mining industry continues to hire young professionals to supplant the growing number of retirees, a well-developed engineering curriculum, coupled with practical, real-world training, can prepare mining engineering graduates to make meaningful contributions in the industry. Successful companies can be measured not only by their reserve base and annual production but also by their retention of mining engineering graduates with zero to five years of operational experience. My personal experience in the industry during the last five years has been varied and rewarding. The knowledge and experience I have gained have taught me valuable lessons that prepared me for my current role.
