This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

Selective-reductive leaching of manganese from low-grade manganese ore using tannic acid as a reductant in acidic media was demonstrated by XRD, SEM-EDX characterization, and batch leaching studies at room temperature. The pH change in the liquid phase before and after leaching revealed that selectivity of manganese over iron was due to the hydrolysis of iron. The acidity in the liquid phase during leaching was dictated by two mechanisms: proton-consuming reaction (manganese oxide reduction by tannic acid) and proton-producing reaction (ferric ion reduction by tannic acid to produce ferrous ion). Based on the leaching studies, the more prevalent reaction between these two was determined by initial leaching conditions: tannic acid concentration, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures, and agitation time. Kinetic studies revealed that maximum recovery was attained within 6-h agitation, which indicated a product layer diffusion process.

Before discussing minicomputer software for the mineral industry, it is helpful to explain some of the computer program terminology. Most of the terms are the same as those applied to large computers. A computer system consists of a machine (hardware) with electronic and mechanical components and instructions (software) that define its operational logic and sequence. This logic is described by sets of commands grouped into programs. Each program has specific objectives related to the computer's operation and to production information from computer data that are input and processed. Software, therefore, is a general term applied to any type of computer program. Instructions to the computer are communicated through languages that convert logical and arithmetic statements into machine operations. The languages may consist of statements resembling mathematical or logical phrases understandable by humans, or they may be coded statements with no apparent resemblance to spoken language but readily understandable by the computer. Computers also translate higher level languages such as FORTRAN or COBOL into machine languages using other programs called Compilers. Programs written in these higher level languages are generally called source code. However, programs written in computer assembly language may also be called source code. The compiled version of the program after it has been translated by the compiler software is called object code. Programs used to "instruct computers how to be computers" are generally called systems software. They relate more to computer operation than to producing externally usable results. Programs producing information for many users-engineers, accountants, managers-are termed applications software. For the most part, applications software is the principal concern of the mineral industry. Programs are developed to fit user requirements as interpreted by programmers. Programs vary in quality, precision, efficiency, accuracy, and complexity, depending on programmer skills and abilities and programming decisions forcing design tradeoffs. A well written program should have speed, efficient use of available hardware resources, accuracy, and an inherently logical structure that aids documentation and subsequent modifications. Programs developed to fit specific requirements are termed customized software. A program organized and prepared for general commercial use is called a package, or a software package, and includes documentation for program use. A form of customized software that takes an existing program or package as its starting point and modifies it is called a customized package. A minicomputer program can be stored on computer cards, standard magnetic tape, magnetic cassette tape, floppy disk, or hard disk. The software purchaser or lessee may select one or more of these media when specifying a program in a software contract. Supporting documentation may include a listing of the program instructions linkages, hardware and storage resource requiremnents, flow charts, and programmer and user manuals. The purchaser must carefully make and clearly understand specifications for media and format of program delivery. This assures that delivered software is compatible with the intended hardware. Mineral Industry Attitudes Toward Computer Software The mining industry has traditionally been conservative concerning computer applications. Furthermore, large computer costs have made these systems accessible only to large companies, for the most part. But in the past few years, mining software systems developed at schools such as Pennsylvania State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute have gained wider acceptance in the mineral industry. More mining engineers now have academic training in computer application, and computer use is now more acceptable to the mining industry. Mining managers in decisionmaking positions are faced with a new generation of computer technology resulting from the rapid evolution of minicomputers. Not too long ago, manufacturers such as Digital Equipment Corp., Data General, and Hewlett-Packard were considered newcomers. They are now established companies. In addition, Apple, Radio Shack, Commodore, and others have emerged in the growing microcomputer industry. So the mine manager or mining executive now has more options. Mining Software is Limited Along with the rapid evolution in hardware development, much general purpose software is now being developed for minicomputers. The 1981 Apple Software Directory can be obtained for about $14; Radio Shack published the Application Software Source Book in three volumes for $1.95 each. Brochures describing software can be obtained for other minicomputer manufacturers by contacting local sales representatives. Hewlett-Packard software can be obtained and exchanged through HP user's groups. Manufacturers' programming staffs are generally concerned with developing applications software. In some instances, manufacturers will recommend software developed by their hardware users. Until now, however, software development for mining applications has been minimal. This should not be surprising, since software development traditionally lags hardware development by several years. It was shown previously that chalcopyrite could be floated without using a collector when the ore samples were treated with small amounts of sodium sulfide (Na2S). The role of this reducing agent was considered to be one of a cleaning agent to remove the hydrophilic surface oxidation products. It was later found, however, that the collectorless flotation could be obtained only under slightly oxidizing conditions. This might suggest that collectorless flotation is not due to the clean surface but to the elemental sulfur which may be present as an incipient oxidation product. Therefore, a search for the presence of elemental sulfur has been made by means of ESCA, mass spectrometry, and solvent extraction followed by W spectrophotometric analysis. On the basis of these results, the mechanisms of collectorless flotation are discussed.

"In recent years, the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has grown due to increasing demand and global supply shortage. The supply deficit of these critical elements has encouraged the search for new sources, with coal and coal byproducts as possibilities. Coals from certain parts of the world can be rich in REEs and can approach a total concentration of 1,000 ppm. Two Alaskan coal samples, from Healy and Wishbone Hill, were investigated for the effects of density and particle size on REE concentrations for three selected size fractions, and flotation tests were conducted on finer fractions. Additionally, bottom ash and fly ash samples from a power plant were examined for their REE concentrations. The results show that the upgrade potential for REEs on an ash basis from a whole-coal basis ranges from 2:1 for the Wishbone Hill samples to 4:1 for the Healy coal samples. Flotations of the finer fractions of the two coal samples, conducted under similar conditions, revealed higher concentrations of REEs in the tailings. Both coal samples had comparatively higher contents of light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) than heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). REE content trends for the power-plant products on an ash basis indicate that fly ash has slightly higher concentrations of both LREEs and HREEs than bottom ash. IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs), also known as rare earth metals, and their compounds are vital components in industrial, automotive, petrochemical, defense and medical applications. Dysprosium in combination with other elements is used in laser materials and nuclear control applications. Neodymium is present in magnets that are used in the manufacture of wind turbines and hybrid cars. Europium, terbium and yttrium are used in devices that have visual displays such as computer screens and laptops (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002; Bunzli, 2013). REEs pose fewer environmental problems of disposal and recycling than their conventional heavy metal counterparts (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002). They are key materials for radar systems, avionics, modern national defense and satellites (Cammarata and Sieradzki, 1994; Hedrick, 2010; Martin, 2010; Szumigala and Werdon, 2011; Cordier, 2011; Bunzli, 2013). REEs are often classified into light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). This classification is primarily based on the electronic configuration in the outermost shell. LREEs, ranging from lanthanum to gadolinium, have a single or no spinning electron in the outermost 4f shell while HREEs, ranging from terbium to lutetium, have paired electrons in the 4f shell. This difference in electronic configuration is responsible for the differences in physical and chemical properties of REEs."

There are a number of air classifiers manufactured throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The classifiers manufactured by Alpine, A. G. of Augsburg, Germany, are unique in their abilities. It is this uniqueness that I wish to delve into and in this respect we will limit this discussion primarily to the classifiers as manufactured by Alpine. It has been reported in the past that these classifiers were introduced into the. United States in the late 50's. Until the introduction of the Alpine Classifiers, air classification seldom produced a satisfactory fractionation of a product below 45 microns (325 mesh) or above approximately 22 mesh. It has been a common practice to classify fine materials which used water as a carrier medium The use of centrifuges are today producing thousands of tons of finely partitive powders in the very small particle size range. The use of centrifuges in connection with wet grinding mills has increased the rates of production of these mills considerably.

Increases in the price of gold starting about five years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have caused a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United states except for a flurry of activity in Nevada occasioned by the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last five years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagueries of gold deposits. The present writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. Wm. Spence at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the united states. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corporation and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. In striving to develop this discussion about "Manpower for Industrial Mineral Industries" two fundamental classes of manpower are encountered. These are: 1) The Labor Force, comprised of unskilled and semi-skilled, nonprofessional personnel who participate in conducting economic, mineral deposit operations and; 2) The Professional People involved in the science, engineering, and management of such industrial enterprises. The commentary given here will be directed primarily to a review of the characteristics of the second or latter class. To pursue successfully a career as a scientist or engineer in today's industrial and social complex, it is necessary that technical knowledge must have been acquired by training and study in an institution of higher learning. Also, to act effectively, the individual must have achieved some degree of specialzation, although this element often is developed to most notable degree by post-graduate exposure and experience. In addition, and especially in the case of "management," it is desirable, indeed it is even necessary, that an individual recognize and appreciate the fundamental humanistic-sociological controls, and their nuances, as these elements exist to shape his total environment.

The Arrowhead Tunnels in southern California are being completed by MWD under stringent groundwater in?ow limits established by the U.S. Forest Service. Pre-excavation grouting, new TBMs and a bolted, gasketed, pre-cast concrete segment initial lining are employed to control water in?ows. The effectiveness of prescribed water control measures was analyzed using conservative assumptions with the analytical techniques described by Goodman (1964), Heuer (1995), and numerical modeling. Analyses results suggest groundwater in?ows to the tunnels can be maintained well below the limits with aggressive pre-excavation grouting balanced against a reasonable rate of advance and quality erection of the initial lining system.

Loss of visibility due to the occurrence of atmospheric fogging in underground mine airways can lead to a reduction in travel times and loss of production efficiency, an increase in the frequency of vehicular and foot traffic accidents and difficulty in checking rock surfaces for instability and loose material. Where hot and humid surface air meets colder underground air, conditions for fog formation nay be present. Further, suspended particulate matter from diesel exhausts or stoping operations together with slow movement of air along passageways nay contribute to formation. The study describes an investigation being undertaken with the cooperation of Kennecott's Ozark Lead Company to identify causes of the problem.

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

The loading characteristics of gold-tetrabromide species onto activated carbon have been evaluated using a completely mixed batch reactor system. The overall loading of gold onto carbon was rapid for the first hour but continued slowly without cessation as a result of reduction of gold. Conventional equilibrium considerations were therefore not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, abnormally high loading capacity values of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kgAu/tonne) could be attained within 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of [AuBr4l-onto the carbon surface where reduction to metallic gold took place. Elution of gold from the loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to too high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon is discussed.

Instrumentation engineers have recently devised practical methods of metering the net solids flowing in a hydraulic mixture. The solids flow rate is determined by measuring the specific gravity and the flow rate of the mixture. T e specific gravity is measured by a variation of the bubbler system. The flow measurement is made by a somewhat unorthodox orifice requiring field calibrations. The linear mixture flow signal is then multiplied by the specific gravity signal, which is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the mixture, to produce a linear solids Slow rate signal. The computations in this system are performed by Sorteberg pneumatic relays. Having obtained this measurement, integration and automatic control of hydraulic solids flow are available. This system is useful in mining, drilling and dredging industries. It provides maintenance of the net solids flow rate and reduces power consumption. Automatic control will provide rapid stabilization of net solids flow rate and release operators from making menual adjustments. The advantages of this application are economy of operation and increased pump efficiency, This paper describes a hydraulic solids flowmeter system installed aboard a dredge. iliary agent was proposed. The mineralogical transformation and silicon extraction kinetics of laterite nickel ore in alkaline hydrothermal treatment were studied. The effects of reaction temperature (175 ~ 250℃), molar ratios of sodium hydroxide to ore (1.05 ~ 1.2:1), and laterite nickel ore particle size (44 ~ 178 μm) on the extraction ratio of silica were investigated by using the shrinking core model. The results show that the extraction ratio of silica increases with the increase of reaction temperature, sodium hydroxide to ore molar ratio, reaction time, and the decrease of raw ore particle size. The kinetic analysis shows that the separation of silica in laterite ore can be described by internal diffusion model. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of the reaction was 8.87 kJ mol− 1, and the kinetic modeling was established.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. The Melbourne City Link Tunnels have been constructed through a BOOT process, the largest undertaking in Australia to date. Tolling commenced on the 1.6 kilometer Domain tunnel in April 2000, and the 3.4 kilometer Burnley tunnel December 2000. The project was delivered by design construct contracting and under ISO 9000. There were a number of major challenges in completing the tunnels, including much higher than expected groundwater infiltration, hydrostatic pressures greater than 6 bar, and unique design and construction applications required to prepare the tunnels for service. This paper covers the end play and final delivery of the tunnels.

The southeastern region of the United States has long been a major market area for coarse and medium particle size natural ground calcium carbonate fillers. The primary market for calcium carbonate in the southeast traditionally has been as fillers in building materials such as carpeting, joint cement and roof shingles. In these applications the economic value of the calcium carbonate in the final product is weighted more toward lessening the cost of the final product, as opposed to contributing any desirable physical characteristics. For example, in carpet backing applications the calcium carbonate filler does little more from a physical standpoint than add weight and body to the backing adhesive. The important factor in the use of calcium carbonate in carpet backing is that it can be used at high loading levels to replace the more expensive latex binder, thus lessening the cost of the final product. It is estimated that calcium carbonate producers in the southeast sell in excess of 200,000 tons (181,436,000 kg) annually for use in latex compounds for carpet backing applications.

In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

The fluidized bed was invented by Fritz Winkler of Germany in 1921. The first application in the U.S. was in the development of the fluidized bed catalytic cracking of petroleum in 1942. Today, fluid bed cracking reactors are an integral part of every oil refinery. When fluid bed technology was first considered for applications outside the petroleum industry it was recognized to have uniform temperature, close control of the gaseous atmosphere and excellent mixing between solids and gases. Roasting of sulfide ores and concentrates was an obvious match. The first application was a single stage roaster for gold refining in 1947. There have been over four hundred commercial fluid bed roasters built and operated successfully in the four decades since the fluid bed was invented. There are three general categories of roasting applications. The largest number of roasters fall into the dead roasting category which includes gold ore roasters. The other categories are sulfating roasters and partial roasters (Reference 1).
