Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unvrorked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 50's saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in produc- tion of natural iron concentrates. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 60's as agglomerated products and foreign ore s began to dominate the U. S. market.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

The most promising near-term alternative to fuel cell driven vehicles is probably Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV or EV) technology. HEV technology combines the best characteristics of fuel-driven engines, electric motor drives, and energy storage components. It is designed with a combustion engine that functions as the primary power source, and an electric power storage system that functions as the secondary power source. The presence of the secondary power source allows designers to size the combustion engine for cruising power requirements. A new energy source for HEV or EV market will become lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in the near future. LIBs for HEV or EV has large scale about more 10,000 times than small size one for IT devices in order to achieve high electric density/capacity and high efficiency, etc. In those reasons, physical treatment of the batteries is more difficult for stable dismantling in comparison with the smaller one. Hybrid vehicle sales will grow by nearly 400 percent during the next seven years, according to a new report from analyst firm ABI Research. By 2013 hybrids will make up 6 percent of annual U.S. auto sales. The traction battery pack will become air-cooled LIBs which consists of several modules of Li ion battery and connected in series/parallel configuration to provide about >450 VDC, >150 kW peak power, and >80 Ah capacity. As the use of these batteries tends to increase significantly for the next years, it is relevant issues that development of new recycling methods as well as optimization of existing processes to treat spent LIBs for HEV have being addressed in order to obtain sustainability. In this study, physical treatment containing stable electrical discharge of spent LIBs for HEV was carried out for recovery of valuable metals from the batteries. Also In order to increase the yield of valuable metals through physical treatments such as electric discharge of spent batteries, crushing, and classification, we also focused on the recovery of cobalt from +8 mesh fraction due to its large portion in crushed intermediates.

Cyanidation has established itself as the main process for extracting gold from ores in this century. However, many ores exhibit refractoriness to the conventional cyanidation process. The main cause of the refractoriness is generally the presence of carbon, tellurium, and sulfides, particularly those of antimony, arsenic, and iron. The problem is usually solved by either modifying the cyanidation conditions or providing an oxidation pretreatment. This paper presents results from studies that help in understanding the causes of refractoriness of various gold ores. This is followed by a discussion of many processes that have been developed to solve the problem such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, and pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation.

This, report presents correlative data on ash and sulfur forms for Pittsburgh seam coal from Greene County, Pa. Prediction equations were developed for sulfur form distributions and washability characteristics. The equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of exploration core samples. It was demonstrated-that both sulfur distributions and washability characteristic's can be predicted from exploration core data ahead of mining. This information can improve the efficiency of selective mining techniques for the production of a uniform metallurgical coal product.

An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.

INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

The issue of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of the amphiboles actinolite, tremo1ite, and anthophyllite to the same degree as asbestos has been studied in detail by the National Stone Association. The ramifications of such a regulation, and the over simplistic regulatory definition of a fiber, are enormous not only for the aggregate industry and its users, but also for the nation. Evaluation of the health, geological, mineralogical, technical, economic and legal issues do not support an "asbestos-like" regulation of non-asbestiform minerals. The adverse consequences of regulating non-asbestiform varieties of actinolite, tremolite and anthophyllite like asbestos would be magnified many times if a similar standard for generic mineral fibers were promulgated.

In order to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in autogenous grinding, the fracture of rock specimens in free-fall impact was studied using the theory of elasticity. Stress distributions in rock specimens under various conditions of impact were analyzed and the conditions for failure were examined in relation to the compressive and tensile strength of rock. The energy equation derived for autogenous grinding coincides basically with Lewis' generalized formula or Oka and Majima's formula, and it is sufficiently general to incorporate all of the three older theories, viz; those of Rittinger, Bond and Kick.

It is estimated that through 1975, there were 1.69x109 m2 (418 000 acres) of urban land threatened by potential subsidence due to mining with a value of over $12 billion (19;3 dollars; USBM, 1979). With increased coal production to meet the energy needs of the nation, both these figures may be expected to increase. Hence greater attention to controlling surface damage due to subsidence is merited. In fact, the Surface `lining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) (Public Law 95-87) mandates that underground coal mining operators "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, ..." The term "subsidence," as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface effects associated with the mining of minerals, and not only vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

In this first report, we present a preliminary model based on the simple binary sys¬tem of component B occluded in a matrix of compo¬nent A, for the case where fracture planes can pass with equal ease through A or B. By assuming that the volume fraction of B in AB in the overall matrix is small, which is realistic for many prac¬tical systems, the problem is reduced to a one-¬dimensional treatment which is conceptually easy to understand. The model was programmed for Monte Carlo simulation, and an analytical solution also developed based on the assumption of zero or one mineral fragment per particle. Preliminary ex¬perimental confirmation using a synthetic "mineral¬-host matrix" of known amount and size of B in AB is presented.

Before getting into the subject of packaging and materials management, please permit me to introduce you to MICRO SWITCH. MICRO SWITCH, A Division of Honeywell Inc. is located in Freeport, Illinois. We manufacture and market thousands of types of precision snap-action electrical switches. Most of them are used as components by other manufacturers in industrial and commercial products. MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. In my position as supervisor-packaging. package design, and materials handling engineering, I am actively involved in package design projects, parts handling design projects, and numerous activities involving departmental layouts, storage facilities, and material handling equipment. The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. The past few years have seen a much greater concern about air pollution in this country. This concern has led to increased legislation restricting the discharge of many substances such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter to the atmosphere. In the future, it is anticipated the present permissible emission levels will be lowered. Current and impending restrictions on the emission of sulfur dioxide have brought out the fact that there is a shortage of available low-sulfur fuel for power plants and industrial use which promises to have an economic impact on the nation's energy picture (1) The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co., under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research, has developed a process to produce a fuel capable of meeting the energy requirements of this nation (2) The process is called "The Pittsburg & Midway Solvent Refined Coal Process". The principle product from the process is Solvent Refined Coal which is an ashless, low-sulfur fuel with 16,000 BTU per pound regardless of the rank coal from which it is produced. The product can be burned as either a solid or a liquid fuel. The process appears to be economically more attractive than other methods of alleviating the pollution problems of this nation. In addition to reducing the air pollution caused by stack gases, the product produced is potentially useful as a source of electrode coke and electrode binder pitch, as a gas turbine fuel, in the production of metallurigical coke and pavement asphalt, and as the first step in the overall process to produce distillate fuels and pipeline gas (3).

Many changes have taken place in the "World Cement Market" since Joseph Aspdin discovered portland cement in the early 1800's. At the turn of the century, production of cement world wide was a few million tons; today, it is over one billion tons. By 1995, world production is estimated to reach 1.2 billion tons. Cement processing has changed from inefficient, small vertical kilns to large efficient, precalcining kilns, and large automated crushing, blending and grinding systems. Consequently the cost of production has declined in real terms, resulting in significant economic benefits to the general public. In addition, quality and uniformity of cement have increased, strengths have increased, and at least 25% fewer pounds of cement are needed for each cubic yard of concrete. Today, cement moves thousands of miles on the inland rivers and great lakes of the U. S., across Siberia and across the oceans of the world. The volume of cement moving more than a few hundred miles is almost 100 million tons, or 10% of world production. Today, on a per ton basis, it costs no more to move 40,000 tons of cement to the United States from the Western Pacific rim or from Europe than it does to truck cement 200 miles. For example, cement shipped by water from Spain costs $5.00 to $7.00 per ton compared to cement shipped by truck 200 miles at $16.00 per ton. This low cost water transportation has been a major factor for the increased movement of cement between countries. Table 1, Cement Production Summary-World, gives a global picture of production, export and import tonnages in recent years. Figure 1 is a graph showing CEMENT PRODUCTION SUMMARY WORLD WIDE.

Trackless vehicles, as the name implies, are machines not bound to rails, guide cables, or other direction controlling devices. They include, for the most part, vehicles which are wheel or crawler (track laying) mounted. Power sources may be self contained such as diesel or battery and can be defined as non-captive machines, while connected power sources such as compressed air or electric can be defined as captive machines. Trackless vehicles are used in all phases of underground excavation, loading, hauling and dumping. Early application found most machines with digging ability used to load those with payload hauling ability. As the versatility of trackless methods became more obvious the trackless vehicle has evolved to more productive machines such as the self loading haulers commonly referred to as Load-Haul-Dump equipment. Trackless vehicles find wide use in drifting and tunneling. Ability to negotiate adverse grades is especially noteworthy. Experience drawn from highly efficient room and pillar mining operations has lead to relatively wide application in drawpoint and cut and fill mining.

The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

A three-dimensional finite element Ground-water flow code has been developed that incorporates saturated/unsaturated, two-regime flow (i.e., both Darcian and non-Darcian) and solves for the seepage face at a surface of outflow. This code is capable of more realistically predicting ground-water inflows to an open-pit mine under the throttling effects of non-Darcian flow. The height of the seepage face on highwalls and the shape of the phreatic surface in the vicinity of the pit that it calculates can also produce more probable estimates of pore pressures for analysis of slope stability.
