That grinding may change a crystalline material both in a physical and in a chemical sense has been shown by a number of authors in recent years. Thus Mackenzie (1) and Bartha (2) reported the effects of careful grinding on muscovite, quartz, gypsum, dolomite, etc. Increase in specific surface produced by grinding implies increase in total energy of a system. Newly produced surfaces are chemically more reactive; dislocations may be introduced during grinding, and existing strain may be released by the same process, as shown by Holt et el. (3) All these changes are easily detected by thermal analysis, but it is not easy to separate the multiplicity of effects registered and to arrive at quantitative interpretations. This paper is an attempt to analyze by the use of thermal analysis some effects produced in grinding. In differential thermal analysis (DTA) one measures all thermal changes occurring in a substance during heating or cooling. Chemical changes, such as decompositions, synthesis, oxidation, reduction, etc., and physical changes such as phase transformations, changes in specific surface and in thermal conductivity, strain release, etc. By thermo gradmetric analysis (TGA) on the other hand only chemical changes involving weight loss or gain are recorded. Similarly gas evolution analysis (GEA) will register only reactions involving gas evolution, including water vapor, and oxidation-reduction. By performing two or all three of these thermal methods of thermal analysis simultaneously and on the same specimen one can separate the different effects registered and by difference evaluate their magnitude.

The LUMINEOS network was established in 2013 to monitor mining-induced seismicity in Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD), located in south-western Poland. Since the starting time, the network was improved and today consists of 17 seismometers and 10 accelerometers. Up to now, the strongest recorded earthquake in the region had Mw4.0. Both raw seismic data and earthquakes catalog for events recorded by the LUMINEOS network are fully open and available on the EPISODES platform (https://tcs.ah-epos.eu/#episode:LGCD). During the last 7 years, the network improvements gave us a possibility to increase location accuracy for shallow mining events. This accuracy is influenced by factors such as the configuration of seismic stations, noise level at seismic stations, and the influence of the velocity model. Here we encountered two main issues which are worth to discuss. The first one is the low detection threshold of two seismic stations and their significant impact on the location errors. The second one is the large uncertainty in the S-wave picking. Even though S-waves are not so clearly visible on seismograms, they are very helpful in the estimation of source location and strength of seismic events in the region. In our work, we present the history of LUMINEOS network and corresponding improvement on location accuracy as well as the influence of noisy stations on the error distribution and how it is connected with location results. We also investigate the effect of the S-wave phases and how they are related to the accuracy of the earthquakes locations in the network.

This paper presents a multi-level computer monitoring and managing system, which was specially developed for the mine. In this system, TF-200, Industrial Standard Buses (STD) and 32 bytes Super micro-computer were integrated into one body as hardware; Data Base was designed by means of software engineering method in the software development; on maitenance of the system, the parameters are managed concentratedly and data are classified to process; therefore, the ystem gets to the advanced level in China. The system is composed of four sub-stations: Signal Transmission. Data Collection, Data Processing and Image Display Sub-system. Signal Transmission Sub-system(STSS) A frequency-division transmission method is used. Data Collect ion Sub-system (DCSS) Industrial Standard Buses (STD) is used. It can change data from STSS into suitable form for DCSS, Calculate average value every minute, decide alarm and transmit data to DPSS. Data Processing Sub-system (DPSS) The host is a S/120. With UNIX Operation System. the data from DCSS can be classified. stored, displayed. printed, by means of real-time and time-division processing. Additionally the functions of the historic data search and data analysis are provide. Image Display Sub-system (IDSS) The real-time and historic data was displayed for curves and diageams on screens. "Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

The chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganeus oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were difficult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexitites of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganiferous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides.

The Canadian Javelin Limited Cerro Colorado copper-porphyry deposit in Panama, possibly the largest known copper-porphyry, contains between 1350 and 450 meter elevations, drill proven and probable ore in excess of 3.0 billion tons averaging 0.65% of copper equivalent. The deposit is located in the Central Cordillera Range, straddling the Continental Divide at 1500 meter elevation. Local topography is very steep. Accessibility is difficult, all logistics made by helicopter, and only recently a 52 km. road from the Pan-American highway was completed into the area. The deposit was discovered in 1969, and since then 75 shallow exploratory holes and 98 deep holes, the deepest 1340 meters, totalling 45,000 meters have been drilled. Deep holes were drilled at the corners of a regular rectangular 150 meter grid.

California was a major talc-producing State until the late 1980s when production from the deposits in the Death Valley area ceased because of a number of factors which included pressure to discontinue mining in and around Death Valley National Monument, and health concerns affecting markets for tremolitic talc. The states of Montana and Texas now account for slightly more than half of U.S. talc production. Deposits in an area encompassing southern Death Valley and extending east into the Kingston Range were formed by contact metamorphism of carbonate beds in the Precambrian Crystal Spring Formation next to Precambrian diabase sills. These deposits contain ore ranging from high-purity, fine-grained talc to platy, tremolitic talc with high brightness. Deposits of tremolitic talc and talc schist in the Silver Lake District in San Bernardino County resulted from metamorphism of Precambrian carbonate beds intruded by granitic plutons. Northeast in Esmeralda County, Nevada hydrothermal alteration related to Late Jurassic plutons caused talc replacement of Precambrian to Early Cambrian dolomite. A hydrothermal origin is also indicated for talc deposits in the lnyo Range just north of the Death Valley District where bodies of unusually pure talc occur in Paleozoic lime- stone near Jurassic granitic plutons. Talc is now mined from a deposit in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range southeast of Sacramento where quartz-mica schist of the Permian Calaveras Formation has been hydrothermally altered to talc. Replacement of magnesite of the Precambrian Allamoore Formation produced talc deposits mined in the Allamoore District of west Texas. This dark-gray talc of low iron content with carbon- aceous material and dolomite is ideally suited for use in ceramics where it makes a white product when fired. Small bodies of platy light-pink to white talc suitable for use as an extender in paint are also mined in this district. In the Llano District of central Texas talc has replaced impure carbonate rocks and serpentinite. All Montana talc production is from deposits in the southwestern part of the State that formed by Precambrian hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marble. This alteration produced material with high purity that ranges from very fine-grained, massive talc to coarser grained, foliated talc. Markets include pitch control in paper, paint, cosmetics, ceramics, rubber and plastics. In southwestern and northeastern Oregon, talc has replaced serpentinite in the vicinity of Mesozoic plutons. Soapstone for carving is mined from a southwestern Oregon deposit. Deposits of similar origin occur in central and northwestern Washington.

INTRODUCTION The use of precast concrete tunnel liners as the initial and final tunnel lining for transit systems has been a major consideration of designers for over three decades. The obvious benefit of building a tunnel that requires only a single pass in constructing the structural lining can provide the opportunity of saving both time and cost. This technique has had worldwide application in transit systems in London, Munich, Hong Kong, Toronto to name a few. In the United States precast liners were evaluated for use on the BART System in San Francisco in the early 1960's but did not provide sufficient confidence in the sealing capabilities available at that time. In 1976 it was decided to call for bids on the Lexington Market Tunnels in Baltimore with a precast concrete liner alternative for one of the tunnel drives. This option was selected by the owner and UMTA to provide a study evaluation for the benefit of the industry. HISTORY In 1983 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority began calling for a series of bids on soft ground tunnels on the Green Line, which included the option of using precast concrete tunnel liners first as an alternative to fabricated steel tunnel liners. A number of studies have been conducted in active and inactive mine environments using continuous monitoring and data acquisition systems to detect various parameters. In addition to the information obtained for research purposes, these monitoring systems can provide a means to remotely collect required information (such as radon daughter concentrations and air velocity) and control various conditions (such as fan operation and air door position) in numerous working sections of an active mine. Selection of detector locations and placement, which are critical to obtain the information and control desired while not inhibiting mine operations and influencing the detector readings, are covered in this paper.

Defining classes of ore using geostatistical methods that match historical classifications has presented problems in the past. A simplistic and practical approach to this problem is presented. An example of the approach is presented using a porphyry type system as a case study. The technique described uses area of drill hole influence and known conditions from similar deposits, or the production history of the deposit being studied. It provides a practical bridging mechanism for defining the class of ore on a block-by-block basis using .the error of estimation value developed during kreiging. The approach provides a filtering method that refocuses attention on the adequacy of drill hole spacing.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

The Mont Klahoyo magnetite deposit is located about 600 km northwest of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. During an exploration period ending in 1977 an international joint venture group investigated the deposit and proved reserves of 670 million tons grading 36% iron. The deposit, occurring at the northeast end of the Baoubly-Kiriao chain of Precambrian iron formations, is associated with amphibolites, pyroxenites and gneisses of the Liberian Shield. At Mont Klahoyo occur two separate iron formations of which the lower member is the ore body. This lower member consists of a highly metamorphosed - banded quartz-magnetite iron formation in which iron silicate bands alternate with beds of quartz-magnetite. mphibolite-pyroxenites and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet gneisses form hanging and footwall rocks. The iron formation has been folded into an elongated overturned "Z" shaped major drag fold with axes trending and plunging approximately northeast. Beds are vertical or dip steeply to the southeast. The ore zone has an average thickness of 130 m and outcrops intermittently over a distance of approximately 5.5 km. Based upon detailed studies of drill cores and the results of ore dressing test work, eight stratigraphic units, identified as K-1 to K-8, are recognizable in the iron formation. Four interbedded units are low grade silicate zones (silicate facies) with the remaining quartz-magnetite units (oxide facies) repre¬senting the important ore zones of the Mont Klahoyo deposit. The ore-bearing "K" units are subdivided further, based upon their specific lithologies, iron content and concentration characteristics, into eleven ore types. The identification of these ore types is considered particularly important to mine planning and flowsheet design. A cap of oxidized materials overlies the primary quartz-magnetite iron formation but no enrichment has occurred. It is proposed that the Mont Kalhoyo iron formations were deposited, possibly chemically, in a volcanic environment as a siliceous iron formation with volcanism providing the primary source of iron and silica. Metamorphism converted the siliceous iron formation to a relatively coarse-grained quartz-magnetite-silicate iron formation.

The United States is totally dependent on imports for all primary chromite and most ferrochrome supplies. Although the United States imports chromite and ferrochrome from a number of countries, the long-term future of chromite supplies appears to lie in southern Africa (Republic of South Africa and Zimbabwe) where 88 percent of known world reserves exist. Floreover, low mining costs and the availability of low-cost electricity for ferrochrome production gives South Africa a comparative advantage over most other chromite and ferrochrome-producing nations. A well-known problem faced by the United States is that when viewed from a longer-term perspective, the major sources of supply of metallurgical grade chromite and ferrochrome may be subject to disruption. The three countries that have caused the greatest concern have been the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and Zimbabwe. South Africa presents a particularly difficult problem because it may be subject to internal political unrest and/or U. N, economic sanctions. South Africa has increased its share of world chromium production from about 30 percent in 1968 to 62 percent in 1978.1

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has developed the Peñasquito property to produce an average annual production of 120 kilo tonnes of lead containing 0.5 million oz gold and 30 million oz silver and 250 kilo tonnes of zinc containing 20 thousand oz gold and 1.5 million oz silver.. The Peñasquito property covers a 39,000 hectare area in the western half of the Concepción del Oro district in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, approximately 24°45'N latitude/101°30'W longitude. The sulfide reserves are 1,009 million tonnes containing 3.33 million tonnes of lead, 7.26 million tonnes of zinc, 16.5 million ounces of gold and 1,000 million ounces of silver. This paper describes the work to justify the installation of HPGR to process the crushed SAG mill pebbles. The SAG mill-Ball mill and Cone crusher (SABC) grinding circuit is an accepted grinding circuit to optimize power consumption relative to throughput. The installation of a HPGR to process the Cone crusher product is the next step in optimizing the power consumption relative to throughput. The concern expressed by some on not moving on this change in grinding circuit was the capital and operating cost of a HPGR. The pebbles from the SAG mill can be the more abrasive and are the harder particles of the ore. Goldcorp investigated the wear and processing costs of installing a HPGR to treat the crushed pebbles. The conclusion was the installation would be a very positive economic factor in the operation of Peñasquito. This is the first application of the use of HPGR to process crushed pebbles. Minera Peñasquito and M3 Engineering selected Polysius to provide a Polycom 2417 with twin 3,000 kW drives. A comprehensive test program at Polysius has shown for 7% higher circuit power it is possible to get approx 23% higher tonnage. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies and with proper control of the transfer size from the SAG to Ball mill circuit there is the potential to achieve 65,000 mtpd per line or a 30% total capacity increase. The cost of power for this increase in grinding capacity is 4.8 kWh/tonne.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead.
