The induced polarization (IP) method of geophysical exploration is capable of detecting even small amounts of metallic luster minerals in a rock mass. Consequently, in the years since discovery, IP surveying has become the most popular ground geophysical survey method. It is not too difficult to understand many applications of IP surveying as used in the search for mineral deposits. However, the basic theory of the IP phenomenon is not well developed or understood, and there has been some disagreement on fundamental concepts. In order to most effectively apply the IP method in the field it is necessary to know the physical characteristics of the sought-for deposit including its size, shape, depth, and electrical properties. With this information an optimum IP search arrangement can be devised and one could use the best possible electrode interval, type of array, and line spacing. With uncertain target characteristics as encountered in the real world, geological guidance must be used to help direct an optimized IP survey.

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. A great amount of work in recent years has been devoted to refining older survivorship models, e.g. life tables, and developing newer ones, e.g. Cox regression. In this paper, these models are applied to data from an epidemiological study of uranium miners in four western states conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service. One of the principal problems addressed in this paper concerns the appropriateness of using cumulative dose as the measure of radiation exposure. An alternative is considered that incorporates dose rate into the model. This procedure does not implicity assume that equal cumulative doses produce the same lung cancer mortality, but instead considers the amount of time in which each miner's dose was accumulated. Results of the statistical analysis indicate that dose rate is a significant factor at higher cumulative dose levels, with lower dose rate apparently more damaging than higher dose rate. The shape of the dose response curve is curvilinear at higher dose levels. No interaction was found between smoking and radiation exposure on a multiplicative or relative scale.

Surface coal mines in West Virginia are receiving stringent NPDES discharge limits for total recoverable selenium. With limits in the low parts-per-billion range, selection and implementation of proper sample collection and analytical methods are imperative for quality assurance and control and for consistency in results. Given the typical oxidized form of selenium in the water, the low limits and the large and variable flow rates from the watersheds, end-of-pipe treatment is difficult and cost-prohibitive to implement. Discharge locations in the remote and steep terrain exacerbate the problem. To evaluate options for end-of-pipe treatment at a Patriot Coal Corporation surface mining operation in West Virginia, CH2M HILL performed wastewater characterization for a range of key constituents and selenium species at three outfalls for selection and preliminary sizing of appropriate treatment processes. A preliminary evaluation of base and wet-weather flows was done to understand flow variability considerations for discharges. A conceptual evaluation of technologies to treat selenium to permitted levels was conducted in con-junction with order-of-magnitude life-cycle cost estimates.

Inertisation is used to enhance the safety of underground mine areas either to avoid the potential for a combustion event or to stabilize a situation after an ignition, fire or heating. The primary objective of a recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study was to review coal mine inertisation and in particular to focus on use of the Polish mine fire simulation software Ventgraph to gain better understanding of how various inertisation units interact with the complex ventilation behavior underground during a substantial fire. Critical aspects targeted for examination under the project grant included location of the unit for high priority fire positions, size of borehole or pipe range required, time required for inertisation output to interact with and extinguish a fire, effects of seam gases on fire behavior with inertisation present and main fan management. A major accomplishment of the project has been to take findings from the simulation exercises to develop inertisation related modifications to the Ventgraph fire simulation program in conjunction with the Polish program authors. Selected mines were ?evaluated or audited?as to the ability to deliver inert gases generated from GAG units to high priority underground fire locations .A coding system has been developed and many potential underground mine fire sources cannot be successfully inertized with the GAG docked at the current specified point; this is particularly so for fires in extended areas of workings or in panels. There is a limit to the ability of the GAG jet engine to deliver exhaust down smaller dimension borehole. There is a need to examine the use of the GAG for production or proactive uses in a wider application in Australian mines responding to recovering from mine fires, spontaneous combustion heating?s, elimination of the potential explosibility of newly sealed gobs or inert mines or mine sections on closure. Some of the current uses of low flow inertisation facilities could be more effectively undertaken with the GAG unit.

The Russia Wharf segment of the Silver Line Phase II Project for the MBTA incorporated ground freezing and underpinning during New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) tunneling through timber pile foundations, urban fill, and abandoned wharf structures beneath two historic 7-story buildings with steel frames and masonry facades. During construction, the project team implemented an extensive program to monitor, evaluate, and mitigate the ground and building movements caused by the various construction activities. Mitigation included freeze cycling and building raising/lowering to compensate for ground movements and safely maintain the serviceability and occupancy of the buildings. In this paper, we present the history of the freeze, tunnel construction, and thaw-related movements that occurred and the building response that we observed.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Static electricity can also be an arc source and may be generated by air flowing through rubber bases or a rapidly moving endless belt. A spark is generally associated with abrasion of iron metal. The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior of TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was = 150 and that of the silica in the same system was = 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of = 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

Two automated fire detection system configurations have been used successfully in underground mines: the pneumatic "tube bundle" approach and the electronic telemetry approach. The electronic telemetry approach is more widely used, owing to its greater speed, flexibility, and capacity to both monitor other underground conditions, and remotely control underground equipment. However, depending on specific mine conditions and layouts, pneumatic detection, or a combined pneumatic/telemetered system may offer significant advantages over the telemetered approach alone. This paper describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in- mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system tailored to the unique requirements of multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. A Bureau developed proto- type system is described with emphasis on design features which counter commonly perceived and/or experienced pneumatic detection system operating problems. Finally, the results of a 3-yr in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype hardware are discussed. Included are descriptions of system layout and coverage, response time, tube leakage, sample dilution, elimination of accumulated water from sample lines, and system maintenance and reliability.

Flooded-bed dust scrubbers installed on continuous miners use fibrous type multi-layered filters to capture dust from the airstream. Prolonged operations of the scrubber could lead to filter clogging due to dust accumulation. This results in reduced flow through the scrubber and elevated dust levels in the mine environment. This paper compares the performance of a conventional fibrous screen filter and a novel impingement type dust filter. The impingement filter is a self-cleaning system and was designed to have a resistance similar to the fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiencies for these filters were computed using iso-kinetic sampling and optical counting of coal dust particles in a clean unclogged state. The cleaning efficiency of the impingement filter also increased with an increase in particle size and was comparable with the conventional fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiency of the fibrous filter improved significantly with an increase in water flow. The non-clogging nature of the impingement filter and minimal maintenance requirement makes it an attractive alternative to the conventional fibrous type filter in mining applications. The research also proposes a term called ‘filter performance factor’ to compare the performance of different filters under similar operating conditions.

The two primary goals in underground coal mining are to improve safety and to lower mining costs per ton through increased productivity. However, as evidenced by the drastic decrease in. productivity since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, (the Safety Act), these goals appear to be mutually exclusive. Millions of dollars have been spent in the res, arch and development of systems to solve this problem. Before the Safety Act, "productivity had experienced a 25-year history of continued increases ...? (Douglas, 1980). But since its enactment there have been dramatic decreases in productivity accompanied by phenomenal increases in mine costs. Labor trends, depletion of the more readily minable underground coal reserves and other factors have contributed to this situation, but the dominant factor is undoubtedly the Safety Act itself. To illustrate, prior to 1969 underground coal mine production was much greater than surface mine production but since then underground mine production has been declining at a rate greater than the overall growth rate of total coal production.

"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."

As a by-product of the steelmaking industry rich in iron and zinc, electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) landfill disposal is restricted in many countries due to the metal lixiviation risks. Several approaches have been examined to recycle or reuse EAFD. Hydrometallurgical methods mainly include the preparation of pregnant acid leached solution (PLS) using inorganic acids followed by selective metal recovery using different methods. We herein proposed a hydrometallurgical process initiated by acid leaching and finalized by thermal treatment to produce nano-ZnO from EAFD. At the condition of this study, only 67% of zinc was leached by sulfuric acid from EAFD into PLS while 98% of surplus leached iron was removed through precipitation by sodium hydroxide. Additional purification of iron removed PLS was accomplished using di-2 ethylhexyl phosphoric acid to extract Zn+2. The addition of ammonium hydroxide to purified PLS provided (Zn(OH)2)3(ZnSO4)(H2O)5 as the final precursor for nano-ZnO that ultimately transformed to nano-ZnO (60 ± 6 nm particle size) at 850 °C. The achieved results were scrutinized through various tests and analyses including TEM, XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA.

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro quantities of radionuclides such as, radium-226, thorium-230 and lead-210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in the uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings. The Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide operates mills for the recovery of uranium and vanadium at Uravan and Rifle in Colorado and a mill in the Gas Hills of Wyoming for uranium production. The company also owns former mill sites on which mill tailings are located at Maybell, Rifle, and Slick Rock in Colorado and at Green River, Utah. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods used by a few uranium mills, largely those operated by Union Carbide Corporation, to dispose of radioactive wastes, to discuss briefly the regulations under which the mills operate, and to present reference information on the subject.

Significant pyrite often does not dissolve in the Sobek (1978) nitric acid extraction; therefore, the standard conservative approach is to estimate pyrite using sulfur present in the sum of the nitric acid and residual sulfur fractions. Alunite, when present, appears as residual sulfur. Because alunite does not generate acidic effluents, overestimation of AGP can occur if all residual sulfur is assumed to be undigested pyrite. Evaluation of 16 samples from the Florida Canyon Mine revealed that petrographic examination coupled with a modification of the Sobek method to include a 6 hour hot (250°F) 'nitric acid extraction resulted in a more accurate estimation of AGP.

In a complex society such as ours, the range of "negotiating" relationships is constantly increasing. These negotiating relationships have emerged as a direct result of the diffusion of power or influence to new sectors and emerging concerns. Even within organizations, the myth of the authority-based heirarchical structure has given way to the reality of constant negotiations between superior and subordinate and with peers in the organizational structure. In the broader context, the corporate organization finds it necessary to reckon and often negotiate with organized employees, suppliers, buyers, government agencies and a range of organized private interests ranging from minority groups to environmental organizations. In response to this diffusion of power and the conflicts which it has engendered, a variety of conflict avoidance, conflict managing or conflict resolution techniques has developed. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to differentiate between some of the conflict intervention approaches which have appeared "on the market", and to suggest three bases for selecting among them: 1. The "role" of the conflict intervenor; 2. How far the conflict has developed; and 3. The breadth and impact of the issues involved.

The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.

The Mount Gunnison No. 1 Mine of the West Elk Coal Company (wholly owned subsidiary of ARCO Coal) had secured contracts to provide low sulfur, high Btu steam coal to various utility companies. This called for the development of the B-Seam at the Mount Gunnison Mine located some 400 feet below the operating F-Seam workings being mined with conventional room and pillar techniques. The B-Seam, to meet production goals, will be mined by a new 600-foot longwall machine making a 13-foot high cut. American Mine Services was awarded a competitively bid contract to drive two 2000-foot, 13-foot by 16-foot slopes at -15 percent, sink a 16-foot diameter ventilation shaft 400 feet between the F- and B-Seams, install a 60-inch conveyor in one of the slopes, remove 7000 feet of existing conveyor and rehabilitate 7000 feet in two entries to accommodate the placement of the longwall machinery. The slope portals were located 7000 feet in by the surface portal. Unique to the project was the placement of work shops and other infrastructure 7000 feet underground with an entry height of 6 feet. The $7 million contract was completed in less than one year using a mix of permissible (Schedule 31) and standard (Schedule 24) LHD equipment, all pneumatic jumbos and shaft sinking gear.

The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

The Doe Run Company (Doe Run), a global supplier of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrates, and lead metal alloys, installed an enterprise expert control system— termed as Digital One—on the company’s Pb, Cu and Zn circuits at its Buick Mill in December 2022. Digital One was developed with Metso and deploys Metso’s product, VisioFroth™. This automated system is now running and optimizing the flotation processes for all three circuits (Pb, Zn and Cu), all plant air and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC). In addition, Digital One also controls a second, newly built, modern flotation reagent system. Digital One also paves the way for automation and expert control of the entire mill, integrating grinding, thickening and filtration. Digital One is digitally immersed in a universal distributed control system (DCS); therefore, today’s mineral processing plants may be upgraded to it or designed around it. This presentation will explore the plant design and operation of this technology at the Doe Run Buick Mill.
