A process for producing reductive bleach in-situ in kaolin slurries has been developed. The bleach is formed by mixing an iron sponge powder (-325M) with slurry treated with SO2. The process has been successfully demonstrated in production, and applied to several grades. The color, brightness, and viscosity of the bleached product is equivalent to or better than that of product bleached with commercial sodium hydrosulfite . The tested products can be bleached at a cost, which is 38-54% of those associated with the use of commercial bleach.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

Fan performance graphs are generated by digital computer using two programs, RUN- FANS and FANPLOT. RUNFANS calculates fan performance data from stored specific-volume, specific-speed data for a given fan type with appropriate allowances for fan diameter, rotational speed and air density. FANPLOT accepts specifications for drawing the graph and accepts either user-supplied pressure-quantity data or RUNFANS- calculated data as input, Operational procedures for both programs are detailed and examples of their interactive query routines are included. The White Pine Mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately six miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Figs. 1 and 2). The ore body mined by White Pine Copper Company occurs in the lower - most 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle - to upper Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper elaborates on the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the ore body.

"Air overpressure monitoring procedures and instrumentation guidelines which apply to production blasting in underground limestone mining are not readily available. The industry also lacks an applicable source for air overpressure levels that are produced by blasting operations in underground limestone mines. As such, there was no available background data from which the expected overpressure levels from production blasting in a new underground limestone mine could be predicted. During the development phase of the mine, it was imperative that newly constructed underground structures be capable of withstanding the overpressure produced by blasting in nearby production headings. To ensure the structures could withstand the blast-induced overpressure, a study was conducted to record empirical overpressure data and develop a model which could be used to control air overpressure levels by the production crews. This document describes the procedures used to develop the model, the development of the model, and the applicability of the model for predicting underground blast overpressures. INTRODUCTION A developing underground limestone mining operation required that a ventilation wall be built to house the permanent mine fans. At the time of the study, the mine was a single-level room and pillar operation with a 7.9 meter (26 ft) high roof, 13.7 meter (45 ft) wide entries, and 13.7 meter by 13.7 meter (45 ft by 45 ft) pillar dimensions. The mine is accessed via a 396 meter (1300 ft) long decline and 100 meter (330 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The ventilation wall was to be partially constructed of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, for which dynamic strength data from explosives loading were unavailable. The company ownership feared that airblast may affect the wall due to the close proximity of the working faces. Therefore, the company management asked that the overpressure levels be estimated and compared with the designed wall strength. Few studies that apply to explosively-driven air overpressure levels in underground production blasting were found through a literature review. Therefore, the logical approach to assess the overpressure levels was to monitor the blast pressures at the site and conduct a thorough evaluation of the data. As a result of this study, the equipment setup and monitoring procedure used to record the airblast data is described. Finally, the experimental data gathered during the monitoring program is presented, trends and findings from the data are discussed, and recommendations for further study are presented."

The area from Ohio on the east, Tennessee on the south, and Minnesota on the west: contains some very unique and useful clay deposits. Included are fireclays and plastic clays in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri; flint clays in Kentucky and Missouri; ball clays in Kentuckv and Tennessee; adsorbent clays (fuller's earth) in Missouri, southern Illinois, and Tennessee; and alluvial clays and shales for structural clay products from every state. Unique kaolin clays are known in Minnesota, Missouri, and southern Illinois and halloy-site localities are known in southern Indiana. The geology, physical properties, and uses or potential uses of these midwestern clays are described.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. "Slope failures that occurred in 2008 and 2009 at the Pikeview Quarry in El Paso County, Colorado, USA were investigated using three-dimensional discrete element modeling methods. Large scale block sliding failures occurred along weak bedding planes that dip steeply into an excavation located at the toe of the slope. Several mining sequences at the toe of the slope were simulated to evaluate the effects of various degrees of extraction and backfill on slope stability. Slope stability back analysis was conducted using pre-failure and post-failure conditions to determine the joint shear strength properties. Laboratory testing was also conducted to determine intact rock properties. Three-dimensional discrete element analysis was uniquely applicable to this evaluation because it allowed representation of shear stress of the basal sliding surface and it afforded evaluation of several scenarios of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope. INTRODUCTION The Pikeview Quarry is an aggregate quarry located approximately five miles northwest of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, USA. The quarry has been operated by several owners since the early 1900s. The Pikeview Quarry has been a major source of construction aggregate for the Colorado Springs area for many years (MSHA 1986). In the 1950s, the site was mined by Peter Kiewit and Sons to provide limestone for the construction of the nearby Air Force Academy. A large scale slope failure occurred on December 2, 2008, which stopped mining activity at the Pikeview Quarry. A second, related slope failure occurred on September 13, 2009. The second slope failure was located immediately adjacent to the initial December 2008 failure. The objective of this publication is to discuss the three-dimensional slope stability evaluation. The causal relationships of slope instability are not within the scope of this publication. However, omitting the precursors to slope failure would limit understanding of the nature of the slope stability evaluation. The regional and local geology and the history of slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry aid in understanding these precursors. Two main failure mechanisms were hypothesized during the failure investigation to explain the triggering of the 2008 and 2009 large slope failures at the Pikeview Quarry. Both mechanisms are given equal credence in this publication. Quarry excavation was a key factor in the slope instability for both failure mechanisms. The objective of the three-dimensional model was to evaluate the effects of extraction and backfill at the toe of the slope with respect to slope stability. GEOLOGY Regional and local geology are both important factors in slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry. Geologic structure at the quarry is related to regional mountain building and basin development associated with the Laramide Orogeny and the Rocky Mountains. Lithologies at the Pikeview Quarry are also related to regional trends. Localized geologic features, primarily related to weathering and erosion, have also been major contributing factors to slope instability at the Pikeview Quarry."

The importance of "Mineral Pigments" can best be shown by noting that the world production is estimated to be in excess of 47 billion kilograms (52 million st). This quantity if pack- aged in the common 22.6 Kg (50 Lb.) bag and placed end to end would circle the world over 500 times. This world production figure is based on a broad concept that pigments, extenders, and fillers have essentially similar functions. In this paper mineral pigments are products produced synthetically or from selected minerals and through pulverization have characteristics of pigments.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

A number of wells were drilled at two phosphogypsum stacks, one at P-21 owned by IMC and the other at Agrico's South Pierce Stack. Each well was sampled, and composites representing 5-ft increments were leached with synthetic rainwater to determine the extent of metal and nonmetal migration. To simulate what was occurring in the stack, composite samples were placed in a column, so that the column represented the stack in miniature form. Leaching experiments showed that both metals and nonmetals moved down the column when water was added to the top of the column. Data obtained from P-21 showed that with time the concentration of metals and nonmetals reached equilibrium values. The concentration of Ca, SO4, F, Si, and PO4 were -600 ppm,~1,500 ppm, 32 ppm, 14 ppm, and 22 ppm, respectively. Column leaching of South Pierce material, representing 0 to 55 ft of stack, showed that after 355 in. of water, the stack was near equilibrium values down to the 33-ft level. With continued addition of water, the portion of the stack at equilibrium would continue to increase and eventually reach the values observed for P-21. The test showed that the sulfate concentration of the effluent from the stack would never reach the USEPA standard value of 250 ppm. During the leaching test, it was determined that the permeability of the phosphogypsum in the columns was 0.000103 cm/sec. This number was used in the modeling. The data obtained from the leaching experiments cast some doubt on the practice of entombment now being practiced for closure of phosphogypsum stacks. The data clearly shows that with time, the amount of material leaching from the stack is low in concentration, with only the calcium and sulfate at higher levels. When a stack is closed at an existing operating plant, allowing rainwater to fall on the stack and capturing the solution in the existing pond system would eliminate the need for covering the stack, since with time the closed stack would continue to leach and at some point reach the equilibrium values of the P-21 stack. Entombment means that the leachable material in the stack will always be there and will require monitoring forever. Allowing rainwater to decontaminate the stack may be the best environmental solution to the problem.

The discovery of the Kalamazoo (Arizona) ore body was a comedy of errors and coincidences and luck -as most discoveries probably are. The story began in early 1965 when Quintana Petroleum decided to diversify from petroleum into minerals and decided to do this by the route of minerals exploration. Quintana Petroleum is owned by the Cullen family of Houston and has Geen successful over the years in discovering oilfields. In 1965, the president and general manager was Corbin J. Robertson, son-in-law of Harry Cullen, founder of the company and a famous Texas wildcatter. But, in 1965, Quintana's financial advisors suggested that the company go into several mineral commodities, including copper, with Tucson, AZ, as the jumping-off point for copper exploration, and with a geological consultant (me) as the point man. The stage was now set! (See Fig. 1, location map of the San Manuel District, Arizona.)

The emergence of residuals management as a planning and management tool in the mineral industry has been recently accelerated by the proliferation of environmental regulation and its associated costs. Residuals management practices allow for the early determination and integration of both production and environmental goals in the development of management strategies to arrive at the most cost effective, environ- mentally sound solution. The term residuals management was in actuality derived from the substitution of the word residual for the term ?pollutant? or ?waste?. A residual can be defined as a non-product output having no value in existing markets or a value less than the cost of marketing it. The values of the residual can be determined by time, technology, government policy, market conditions, etc. Residuals basically fit into two classes -- materials which are composed of liquid, gaseous or solids; and, energy, which mainly consists of heat and noise. These residuals are interrelated and can be modified by adding materials and/ or energy, which also may become a residual; thus, lending themselves to alternate disposal schemes to control the adverse effects.

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources. Pneumatic, triboelectrostatic processing of physical mixtures containing fine (-200 mesh) particulate may have significant application potential in the mining and energy industries. Such dry processing methods, especially for finely comminuted materials, have not been examined in as much detail as wet processing methods nor have been part of the training or education of mining and process engineers. We have examined fundamental and applied physical and engineering factors controlling triboelectrostatic beneficiation of fine-sized physical mixtures, one of which -combustion fly ash -has size, heterogeneity and mineral concentrations typical of those expected in mined minerals. The applicability of dry processing, however, cannot be readily evaluated because of the unavailability of standard procedures for process assessment.
