Open Pit Mine Production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty suffers from an exponentially increasing problem size as simulations and real options flexibility are used to generate and evaluate multiple production schedules. Robustness evaluation techniques attempt to evaluate a production schedule that is generated on a single set of economic parameters against several varying prices and sources of uncertainty. This approach is invalid as the corresponding optimal LOM mine plan will change for each set of evaluation parameters. Using commodity market futures and treasury bonds as production schedule economic input parameters provides fully price and time-value-of-money risked scheduling parameters that maintain a deterministic problem size. This paper will provide comparative analysis of project NPV’s coming from traditional price uncertainty evaluation based on a single fixed LOM mine plan using varying prices versus evaluation based on varying LOM plans that are both generated and evaluated using varying prices. When cross evaluating constant price mine plans against simulations, the upside potential and downside risk of a project are significantly misrepresented. INTRODUCTION The life of mine (LOM) production scheduling problem seeks to answer the question of from where and when to extract a given block within the ultimate pit limit as well as where and when to process it. Solving this problem takes into account the constraints of extracting any particular block while seeking to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the mineral asset as a whole. A direct driver of the value of a block, and there for the entire asset, is the market price of the commodity in question. Complications arise when an optimal production schedule is attempted to be solved under price uncertainty. Many solution methodologies have been proposed in an attempt to optimize under this criterion, yet there are three salient aspects that are overlooked during this process. They are: • Generating a single production schedule and evaluating it against many simulated price paths. • Failing to understand the mechanism describing particular commodity price behavior • Inappropriate risk adjustment In an effort to address these aspects of production scheduling under commodity price uncertainty, we propose a methodology to define the economic parameters as input that is applicable to most if not all production scheduling approaches. This methodology will not only simplify the production scheduling process in terms of establishing block value but utilizes the risk adjustment of real options valuation to avoid the arbitrary blanket risk adjustment of traditional discounted cash flow valuation. Our findings conclude that attempting to optimize around individual price paths is futile and using a market risk adjusted single price forecast provides a justified economic basis for production scheduling while maintaining the same problem size as a deterministic production scheduling problem.

The very excellent presentations which you have just witnessed, revealed the geological aspects of gypsum operations. It is not our purpose this morning to pursue this subject further. Instead, we felt you would be interested in some of the uses of gypsum . . . and what the future holds for gypsum products. To help accomplish this, we're going to first show the Gypsum Association's new film, "Shape Of The Future. ' This short movie traces gypsum f ram mines and quarries to its ultimate destination in homes, schools, offices -- in virtually every type of construction. We think you'll be particularly interested in the description of gypsum's fire resistive nature.

As part of its research program on column flotation, the Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center has performed studies on (1) column flotation amenability and comparison with conventional flotation results for over 15 mineral systems, (2) alternative methods for improving column bubble generation systems, (3) mineral behavior within a column, and (4) the effect of changes in column operating parameters on flotation grade and recovery. Based on results from these studies, flotation columns (1) are capable of producing higher grade concentrates in fewer stages than conventional flotation cells at equivalent or increased recoveries, (2) require less retention time than conventional flotation cells, and (3) can be divided into cleaning and collection zones that have characteristic mineral-upgrading-per-foot values. Attempts to improve the column air sparger have led to the development of a superior external bubble generation system, which can (1) achieve increased air holdups. (2) produce bubbles from 400 Um to 4,000 Um average bubble diameter with minimal frother addition, (3) provide superior bubble size control, and (4) be maintained without column shutdown. Efforts are continuing to improve column flotation and transfer successful technology to industry.

INTRODUCTION Several major factors introduce uncertainties into the assessment of radon progeny exposure to miners using time-weighted average radon progeny concentrations: uncertainty in the measurement of radon progeny concentrations in specific areas, assignment of an individual miner's time to those areas, variation in radon progeny concentration between measurements and potential human errors involved in calculating concentrations and handling data. The currently available grab-sampling methods for determining working level were analyzed to determine the magnitude of the uncertainty due to each of these factors. For all measurement methods studied, the variation in the airborne concentration with time in operational areas of a mine is the dominant factor in the uncertainty in determining annual radon progeny exposures for individual miners. Uncertainties relating to accuracy of the method and precision of measurement were found to contribute a significantly greater portion of the total uncertainty than human errors. Under normal conditions, if the technicians performing the measurements are conscientious and well trained, human error contributes little to the total uncertainty of the radon progeny exposure determination. The primary goal of radiation monitoring is the reduction of radiation exposure to the lowest reasonably achievable level below regulatory limits. Monitoring personnel in mines should be trained not only to obtain accurate estimates of miner radiation exposures but also to recognize and, when possible, to implement correction of situations which result in unnecessarily high radon progeny exposures. ESTIMATION OF UNCERTAINTY DUE TO HUMAN ERRORS Human errors affecting the assignment of annual radon progeny exposure to individual miners can be placed in two categories: those related to the measurement of radon progeny concentration in specific mine areas and those related to estimation of occupancy time for individual miners and transcribing data to permanent records. The former are specific for the measurement method used; the latter are common to all methods. Errors in Determination of Working Level All systems for determining radon progeny concentration require measurement of several parameters, which include volume of air sampled, count rate and decay time. These quantities and appropriate constants are used in a basic equation, specific to the system, which estimates working level. An unintentional random mistake in measurement of any one of these parameters or in the selection of proper constants will contribute to the uncertainty in the determination of working level. In our analysis of human error we separated each measurement method into a sequence of independent operations, with each step subject to operator error. For each operation we estimated the probability of occurrence and the consequence of errors to obtain a resulting uncertainty. Certain types of errors result in specific consequences. For example, we assumed that an error of 5 seconds in timing of a 5-minute sample results in a fractional error of 1/60 (1.7%). Other types of errors can result in a range of uncertainty. Transposing digits read from a scaler can produce errors ranging from near zero to approximately 60%. In these cases we calculated the statistical variance for the distribution of errors. We assigned the square root of the variance divided by the mean as the consequence factor for that type of error. This is essentially the same as a coefficient of variation. The product of the probability of occurrence and the consequence factor is the fractional uncertainty in the measurement due to that particular error. The total uncertainty due to human errors is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the uncertainties generated by all manual operations. Uncertainties Due to Human Error for the Kusnetz Method One of the techniques most commonly used to estimate working level in U.S. uranium mines is the Kusnetz method. A generalized way to express the equation used to compute WL by this method is: WL = (Net Alpha Counts)/(V)(ST)(CT)(E)(K) where: V = sample flow rate in liters/min ST = sampling time in min CT = counting time in minutes E = absolute counting efficiency K = Kusnetz conversion factor (dis/min-L per WL), as a function of decay time in minutes. The example of human error analysis presented here is based on the Kusnetz procedure having a timing sequence of 5 minutes sampling time, 40 minute decay time, 2 minute counting time. During the sampling procedure a stop watch is used to determine the timing interval. We assume that it is common to make small timing errors of a few seconds, but larger timing errors occur infrequently. Errors greater than 30 seconds are considered to be essentially non-existent since we assume that the

When I was originally invited to speak to this audience on the subject of the future supply of precious metals I was somewhat apprehensive and suggested that the Program Chairman select someone with more credentials. He declined and the results of our conversation gave me cause to reflect and recall the opportunities I have had over the years and how fortunate I have been to be associated with so many successful companies and knowledgeable people affiliated with the precious metals field. I discovered that since 1935, 1 have worked in or visited most of the gold and silver camps in the United States; have been a leaser of a gold mine in Mohave, California; have both lost and made money in the silver futures market; have worked for two of the greatest precious metals companies in the United States - Homestake Mining Company and Hecla Mining Company, have spent a considerable amount of time in precious metal related discussions with men like Don MacLaughlin, Paul Henshaw, Dick Stoehr, Abe Shoemaker, Bill Love, Phil Lindstrom, Simon Strauss, Herbert and Bunker Hunt and many others. It is those exposures and experiences that I draw onto discuss the subject at hand.

Mine closure and reclamation issues have evolved over the past several years becoming further complicated by stricter standards and by the cmrent economic climate and price of gold. Many mine permits are calling for more stringent remediation of spent ore heaps and tailings. Leachate solution water quality must meet strict discharge criteria for multiple parameters besides cyanide at mine closure. Closure standards are more difficult to meet and most mines do not have an increased budget at the end of mine life to deal with the falling standards. These issues make additional gold recove1y at the end of mine life a critical problem in financing some closure operations. Another issue is the length of time that must be budgeted for heap rinsing operations. Innovative biological processes developed and applied by Pintail Systems, Inc. at numerous mine closures have indicated that bio-processes can significantly enhance gold recovery dur­ing heap cyanide bio-detox over the recoveries expected from rinse operations. If heap rinsing can be eliminated or reduced and if gold recovery can be improved at the end of mine life, many mine closures may be possible with processes that pay for themselves or generate profit. Additional advantages of the bio­detox technology is that it can be engineered to treat multiple contaminants besides Weak Acid Dissociable (WAD) cyanide. Other contaminants treated in heap process solutions include nitrates, ammonia, heavy metals, thiocyanate and total cyanide. At the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company Ironclad Mine near Victor, CO, 5 million tons ofrinsed, heap leached spent ore were biologically detoxified to reduce cyanide content, enhance gold recovery during bio-detox and to reduce dissolved metals in heap leachate solutions. During the bio-detox treatment period a substantial improvement in gold recovery allowed the detox oper­ation to operate as a profit center. Final gold recovery was at least twice what was expected from a normal rinse operation.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure to roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and trial-and-error testing. Both prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

Utilizing the recently developed laser velocimeter and a Pitot-static tube, the United States National Bureau of Standards (NBS), has calibrated various types of anemometers that are commonly used in the mining industry. This paper presents a summary of the performance characteristics including accuracy, precision, starting and stopping speeds of each instrument tested. The specific instruments that were calibrated by NBS have become Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) primary reference instruments. These primary reference instruments are used in turn to calibrate secondary reference instruments for each Coal Mine Safety and Health District. Each District calibrates anemometers that are used by District engineers and inspectors. Calibration is accomplished through a substitution procedure in which the reading on the anemometer is compared to the true velocity determined by the reference instrument. Calibration is performed over the entire range of the instrument using an open jet wind tunnel to produce the various approximate velocities. Some specific details of the calibration procedure are presented in this paper.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. Simulation is a general term which commonly appears in the technical literature and which can have different meanings to different people. One interesting definition (9)* applicable in an engineering context is the following: "Simulation is the use of a model to study a problem." In most cases, the model referred to in the above definition is a simulation model constructed in a computer language and implemented on a computer in order to solve the problem under consideration. The application of computer simulation models to the study of problems in materials handling and earthmoving has been successful in the past. Generally speaking, this method has been used where the system to be studied has many variables and where the ability to predict the outcome of the system under different sets of conditions is difficult. The prime reason for using such a model is to evaluate the numerous likely ways of operating any particular system without the necessity of actually conducting full-scale field tests. The simulation model presented here is such an application made to the process of tunneling and, in particular, to the process of tunneling with a boring-type tunneling device. At first glance, the process of tunneling may not appear to be particularly complex and susceptible to study by a computer model. However, a close analysis of the tunneling process will reveal that it is rather complicated as a result of limitations placed upon the system by restricted space in the tunnel, geologic variations along the tunnel

The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents (hereafter chimneys) are commonly found on the new crust forming along divergent plate boundaries. Related to the chimney cycle from birth to death, it is hard to define the growth stage of the chimney due to a brief life span of the venting hydrothermal plume. Here we try to categorize the mineral magnetic properties of the chimneys according to their venting fluid-temperatures. Hydrothermal sulfide deposits in the Southwest Pacific were explored in 2012 and chimneys were collected using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and Grab with AV camera (GTV). In the present study, mineral magnetic properties of three Cu-rich chimneys were measured: a high-temperature chimney showing a venting fluid-temperature of about 200°C (ROV01); a lowtemperature chimney of about 80°C (GTV01); and an inactive chimney (ROV02). The chimneys were sliced to ~1 cm intervals from core to outer margin. Magnetic properties of ROV01 are dominated by pyrrhotite, except for the most outer part that experienced severe oxidation. Concentration and grain-size of pyrrhotite are relatively low and fine respectively. In the GTV01, pyrrhotite, dominant in the core, is gradually mixed with hematite toward the outer margin of the chimney due to secondary oxidation. Both the concentration and grain-size of the magnetic minerals are greater compared to the GTV01. High concentration and large grain-size of magnetic minerals characterize ROV02. Dominant magnetic phases are pyrrhotite, hematite, and goethite. In particular, the most outer margin shows the presence of magnetite produced possibly by magnetotactic bacterial activity. Such distinctive contrast in magnetic concentration, grain-size, and mineralogy among three different types of chimneys enables the life stage of the Cu-rich chimneys to be determined through a mineral magnetic study.

In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.

A longstanding problem in geostatistics is that kriging usually assigns significantly greater weights to end samples in strings of data than it does to central samples. These weights are theoretically valid, but suboptimal estimates may result when there are geological trends in the variable near contacts, that is, large weights may be applied to samples that are systematically lower or higher than average. A number of ad-hoc corrections exist, each with pros and cons; none are fully automatic with a well-defined measure of optimality. A new method for estimation in a finite domain is proposed. This method is referred to as finite domain kriging. The method is based on kriging with a successively larger number of data. The total number of relevant data (n) is established, and then n kriging matrices are solved. The first matrix has the closest single data value (n-1 weights are set to zero); the second has the two closest data (n-2 weights are set to zero) and so on. The final matrix has all n data. The kriging weights used for estimation are the average of the weights from the n successive kriging runs. Each kriging run is optimal, yet with different smoothing and a different treatment of data at the end of the strings. The result is a set of weights that does not give undue influence to data values at the end of strings. The methodology is developed with examples. Cross validation shows that finite domain kriging outperforms conventional kriging.

The past history of uranium production has been dominated by strip and shaft mining methods, but recently in-situ leaching has emerged as a viable alternative for uranium recovery. (1-8) Mobil was the first company to start in-situ uranium leaching in New Mexico. Mobil's Crownpoint project areas are in Mdinley County and are part of the Grants Mineral Belt. The major uranium deposits in this area occur in the Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. (9-11) The ore depth at the Crownpoint project is about 2000 ft. In an earlier paper we discussed the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crown- point ore. (12) The organic carbonaceous material often associated with the coffinite ore was characterized in some detail. The organic material appeared to be a very mature, coaly-type kerogen derived from plant components. This result was consistent with other studies on such carbonaceous material. (13-15)

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

It is generally recognized that geologic input is required for the results of a geostatistical study to be meaningful. However the link between geology and geostatistics is often complex and not well understood. A geostatistical evaluation can be divided into four phases: Background discussions, computation, reserve reporting and reserve audit. Each one of these phases is described, as well as the role the geologist should play during their completion. This role will vary depending on the geology of the deposit being studied, the geostatistical method chosen and the computer hardware and software being used. The geologist's acceptance of the results is needed if the geostatistical model is to have any credibility. The most significant obstacle to a meaningful study comes from the difficulties geologists and geostatisticians often encounter when attempting to communicate with each other.

Equipment-washing facilities at Freeport-McMo-Ran?s Sierrita Mine in Arizona produce a mixture of oil and water that was difficult to dispose of easily or cheaply. However, after some changes in the facility, waste oil is now used as part of the mining process. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., head-quartered in Phoenix, AZ, operates copper, gold and molybdenum mines. It is the world?s largest producer of molybdenum. Heavy equipment used at the mine is hosed off periodically in the wash bay. The dirty water and oil mixture drains into the sump next to the bay. Oil was manually collected for disposal. This was a tedious and dirty process Mine managers sought a more efficient method of removing the oil. Instead of spending the time and effort skimming the tank with vacuums or sorbents, they enlisted the help of Abanaki Corp., manufacturer of the Model 4 Oil Grabber. Engineers designed the sump to utilize prevailing winds to blow the oil to one corner. This was the ideal place for the Abanaki skimmer. The skimmer removes the oil and discharges it into a plastic storage container. ?This reduces the time needed to keep the area clean, and the staff can focus on cleaning the equipment rather than worrying about the oil,? according to Jay Salerno, construction manager at the Sierrita Mine. Salerno is considering adding an optional oil concentrator to the skimmer to make the process even more efficient. The concentrator would remove any water picked up by the belt and return it to the sump, leaving nearly pure oil for disposal. Because the mine is located in the Sonoran desert, most of the water evaporates in the hot, dry air and is not reused.

Maintenance costs in the mining industry often account for as much as 18-20% of total operating costs and with the cost of labor and materials rising, they threaten to become an even larger percentage of the total. Yet, without an effective maintenance program costs can soar beyond what they would be without a program. In other words, when production equipment is down, there is no production and no product to sell in the marketplace. This cost of downtime in lost product far exceeds the actual cost of maintenance, which is defined here as labor and materials. Thus, mine management must have an effective maintenance program to avoid downtime and meet production targets. Attaining an Effective Maintenance Program Many mine management and operations supervisors believe that an effective program is a function of how hard they push maintenance. Yet, when vital production equipment is inoperable and production is lagging, no amount of pushing helps. In actuality, maintenance has little control over its own destiny and needs support from other departments to deliver good service. Success of the maintenance program depends on gaining control of those factors that directly influence maintenance. Consider the following. Organization-The maintenance organization must be structured for maximum responsiveness to production needs. Unfortunately, some needs are immediate and many are unknown in advance. The maintenance department has little control over them. These outside influences limit the department manager's ability to control his own organizational structure. Preventive maintenance procedures-Routine lubrication, equipment inspection, minor adjustments and the like are controlled mostly by maintenance. Yet, scheduling preventive maintenance depends also on the availability of equipment controlled by other departments. Planning-The purpose of planning maintenance jobs is to ensure that the best use is made of maintenance resources. If the production department creates an environment of running repairs and emergencies, there can be little planning. Even well-planned jobs will suffer if there is less than full cooperation in carrying them out. As a consequence, the maintenance department is not blocked from planning, but the value of its planning is reduced. Scheduling-Maintenance scheduling should be a joint effort. Although maintenance does the planning, production must agree to the scheduled maintenance of its equipment. Workload-As a service organization, the maintenance department has limited control over its workload because it must consistently respond to other department's demands. At best, maintenance controls only the fixed portion of its workload-utility work, janitorial service, maintenance shop work, and assigned repetitive and preventive maintenance duties. Unscheduled and emergency work are initiated by operations. Major maintenance actions require full cooperation. Labor productivity-The effective use of labor is tied to other key functions of maintenance. These include organization, preventive maintenance, planning, scheduling, and emergency work. An area type organization, for example, can often respond more quickly to immediate needs than a centrally controlled maintenance group. Yet, area maintenance can result in lower labor productivity unless tight control is exercised. One of the advantages of a good "detection-oriented" preventive maintenance program is early discovery of problems and better opportunity to schedule corrective work in advance. Under planned work conditions, use of labor can be more productive. Complete planning and scheduling can minimize time spent on each job, increase effectiveness of supervision, and improve labor productivity. Finally, if emergency work is minimized, there are fewer delays, less lost time, better coordination, and more productive use of labor. While labor productivity is an important factor in carrying out maintenance, it also is influenced by outside factors. However, few realize the impact of being able to improve maintenance productivity.
