Pillar design ought to be a matter of matching pillar strength against pillar loading conditions to come up with dimensions that will cause the pillar to behave as required - to stand forever, or for a limited time, or to fail in a controlled manner. But something has gone wrong in recent years, seriously wrong. Pillar design practices have departed from reality. The laboratory and computer have taken the place of the mind. If the mind is put to work and such pillar design practices are examined critically, it becomes obvious that they deal with conditions that do not exist in a real mine. Time, effort and money are wasted, and the end results are incorrect and misleading. These questionable pillar design practices have been passed on from generation to generation over the past 30 or 40 years. The hope here is that we can return to reality as soon as the questionable practices are generally recognized. We could then go back into the mines and define how pillars really work, and mining safety, efficiencies and costs should improve. Let us take a close look at current textbook design practices and compare them to real-life conditions. Common sense might then prevail. (At this time, we will consider only mine pillar design, but similar scrutiny should be applied to design criteria for width of openings, floor conditions and roof support systems.)

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

Horizontal inclinometer and deflectometer casings were used to measure deformations up to 15.2 m (50 ft) ahead of and adjacent to the heading in highly fractured and sheared shales at the Stillwater Tunnel. The measurements were compared with borehole extensometer and tape extensometer deformations to evaluate ground movements in advance of, adjacent to, and behind an advancing tunnel heading. Ground deformations of up to 127 mm (5 in.) occurred during passage of the innovative "walking blade-gripper" TBM. Deformations were compared with curvometer/distometer and vibrating wire strain gage data from steel ribs to assess rock-support interaction.

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. Fully-bonded rock bolts have been widely used in construction sites and mines in recent years. The purpose of this investigation is to prove the effectiveness of rock bolt supports in unstable ground through in-situ tests and numerical analysis. 2. MEASUREMENTS AND PROCEDURES OF IN-SITU TESTS The fully-bonded rock bolts as the mine road¬way supports were tested in the Fukasawa mine which is located in the northeast district of Japan (Fig. 1). The Fukasawa mine (one of the Kuroko mines) started the production in 1973, and the present monthly production is slightly less than 20,000 tons. The ore deposit which exsists at about 400 m depth is divided into several small lenticular shaped bodies. They are distributed apporiximately 1500 m in NW-SE direction and 700 m in NE-SW direction. The hanging wall is basaltic lava and the footwall is tuff. The rocks surrounding the ore bodies are soft but relatively intact, so the trackless mining system has been adopted from the beginning of the development.

A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

"The north segment of the Zizhi Tunnel that consists of twin tunnels was excavated at a shallow depth in soft ground using the Shallow Tunneling Method. Based on continuous field measurements, the development histories of surface settlement were analyzed first. The observed development process could be roughly divided into three stages and the influence of river was evidenced. Transverse and longitudinal surface settlements above the twin tunnels were then fitted with empirical models. The obtained trough width parameters in transverse and longitudinal direction (it and il) and the volume loss (VLs) were presented and discussed. Additionally, surface settlement was compared with the crown settlement. The relationship between surface and crown settlement behaved in two different ways inside and outside the river-affected region. The findings in this project give references for predicting surface settlements in similar tunneling condition. INTRODUCTION Nowadays tunnel construction has become a major way of utilizing underground space in many large cities. The ground deformation will be inevitably induced in the tunneling process. Engineers should always be careful about excessive deformation that may damage adjacent structures. For shallow tunnels, controlling ground deformation turns to be more risky. Since soil arching is not completely formed in the shallow tunneling, settlements can easily develop from tunnel crown to ground surface.A conventional tunneling method named Shallow Tunneling Method (STM) has been developed and widely applied to constructed shallow tunnels in China. The major difference between this method and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is whether considering self-supporting capacity of surrounding ground or not. In order to reduce the disturbance of surrounding soils, several guidelines are highlighted in this method, including advanced pipe forepoles, strict grouting, short excavation length, strong support, quick closure and frequent measurements (Fang 2012). Nevertheless, the ground deformation is still hard to control and becomes a concerned problem, mainly because ground settlement has some regional features and largely depends on the detailed excavation methods (bench cut method, multiple heading method, etc.) and ground condition (sand, clay, decomposed rock, etc.)."

Liberation size can be estimated using various techniques such as grain counting, frequency curves, X-ray intensity and the mesh of grind. The present investigation deals with the estimation of the liberation size of graphite flake contained in a schistose ore from Shivaganga, India. It was observed that the flakes are liberated at from 75 to 150µm. The rougher flotation concentrate obtained after grinding the run-of-mine ore for 5 min contained 54% fixed carbon. This represented the first stage of liberation. After regrinding to <90 µm in the presence of sodium silicate and guar gum, a cleaner concentrate containing 82% fixed carbon was obtained.

Subsurface migration of cyanide is attenuated by naturally occurring geochemical and biogeochemical processes. Geochemical mechanisms which remove or immobilize cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes include precipitation/coprecipitation, sorption, and volatilization. Geochemical properties of soils and geochemical materials that promote the functioning of these mechanisms include the following: 1) acidic soil pH; 2) presence of illite and smectite clays; and 3) presence of iron hydrous-oxides and organic carbon. Naturally occurring soil microorganisms play perhaps a more important role in attenuating cyanide movement than previously realized. Biodegradation of cyanide is a "renewable" process, limited in its effectiveness by the avalibility of oxygen and micronutrlents (usually phosphate) to the microorganisms.

Installation of a computerized mine monitoring and control system in two planned construction phases began in 1983. Phase one consisted of providing a central monitoring station located on surface for monitoring underground CO detection in Frood Mine&apos;s heated area. The implementation of this project annualized labour savings of $200,000. The cost of installation of an early fire warning system was $100,000. There are several CO sensor monitoring carbon monoxide trends through mine heated areas. To obtain an early warning, it is not good enough to know that a fire has started, but it is also necessary to know where the fire is located.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.

It is unlikely that improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel cost/shortages, and increasing haul distances as in the past. Therefore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this Bureau of Mines contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic, and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data were gathered from extensive literature searches, European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configurations.

The broken hill proprietary company Ltd., Australia&apos;s only steel producer, has come a long way. Since 1885 to reach today&apos;s. Capacity of 6.6 million long tons of ingot steel per year.* its Newcastle steel complex in New South Wales, located 100 miles north of Sydney and on-stream since 1915, has likewise shown continued impressive growth (fig. 1). The most recent expansion plans at Newcastle call for sub¬stantially increasing its production, with the help of some added facilities, but principally relying on the increase in efficiency of the furnace operation. Its modern raw materials blending system will playa major role in meeting Newcastle&apos;s new targets.

After nearly five years of economic hardship, the world copper industry is, in our opinion, about to enter a period of considerable strength. This opinion is based on three main propositions, namely: 1) there are a number of reasons, both general-economic and industry-specific why copper demand is likely to perform significantly, more strongly in the 1980&apos;s than in the 1970&apos;s; 2) the virtual cessation of investment in new facilities, especially at the mine level, over the past years makes it physically impossible for capacity to expand as fast as demand in the mid-1980&apos;s; and 3) there is much less "excess" inventory available than most analysts believe. If we are correct in these assumptions, then the implication is that copper prices will climb up to, and possibly beyond, the cost-justified price level. Combined with general inflation, this suggests a price in excess of $2/pound by 1985 or roughly treble the 1978 average.

In this paper, a semi-qualitative methodology is presented and then applied to an aluminium extrusion industrial facility in order to perform an initial environmental assessment. The results of the assessment enable an improved understanding of the environmental performance of the facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. Following, the application of case-specific sustainability indicators related with the areas of significant environmental concern, leads to a more comprehensive sustainability assessment. The applied two-step approach offers a quick and reliable environmental assessment and help focusing on the most environmentally problematic areas. Moreover, the follow-up of the specific indicators seems to be appropriate for the improvement of the environmental performance of the examined industrial facility.

Before the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, coal policies-especially coal research policies-were geared to find a solution to the sulfur emission problem. However, technologies to reduce sulfur emissions cannot be tailored for a single coal. A technology that will clean Illinois coal to compliance levels will do the same, or nearly the same, for most other types of coal. This paper will discuss an integrated approach to the analysis of the future of coals from different regions in the United States and its implications for coal-related policies by government and industry.

Our interest in metallurgical applications for activated carbon was thoroughly aroused when laboratory studies indicated that each dollars worth of carbon could retain as much as four dollars worth of tin. Since then other data was developed suggesting many Potential uses in the metallurgical field it is hoped that, the information presented in this paper may encourage studies by knowledgeable individuals in metallurgical operations. Activated Carbon accomplishes its results by adsorption which involves selective removal of materials from solution by holding the compounds on the carbon surface at the active areas. An example of adsorption is the dyeing of cloth where the dye is selectively held on the cloth surface and the concentration in the dye solution is thereby reduced. Many theories exist on, adsorption, but the predominant factors involved in metallic ion adsorption probably are that adsorption is indirectly proportional to solubility and is benefited by high concentrations acting to squeeze out molecules in smaller amounts.

A project is described which uses a computerized guidance system on an underground mining machine for guidance and profile control.
