"From 2011–2016 there were 1,511 documented injures, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines. The majority of these ground fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely utilized in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA. The load-displacement characteristics of a 2.4-m x 3.7-m panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of displacement loading rate, load pull surface geometry, and the inclusion of roof channel on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines. Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Comptonet al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)."

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. The Highland Uranium Operations of Exxon Company, U.S.A. is a large uranium mining and processing complex situated in the Powder River Basin of East-central Wyoming. Surface mining and chemical processing of a large relatively low-grade ore body began in late 1972. An underground mine was later developed and began production in November of 1977. Figure 1 shows the location of our operations. During the planning stages of the project, it was recognized that hiring and retaining quality employees would be a significant problem. Other operations in similarly isolated locations were experiencing high turnover rates and were forced to employ inexperienced and poorly trained operators. In an attempt to attract employees, many of the companies provided mobile home or bunk- house facilities, but these costly peripheral ventures did not prove to be noticeably successful.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada has now been operating a computer for the grading or blending of direct shipping ores for two years. This paper deals with the computer application pertaining to the grading of direct shipping ore. It consists of five sections. The first part deals briefly with a description of the operation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada; the second with the source and flow of the various data required to grade or blend ore; the third briefly outlines the computer programs used in this application; the fourth illustrates the mathematical approach used to properly blend ore. The final section briefly describes other technical computer programs.

Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

The Lornex mine is located on the Southern slope of the Highland Valley in South Central British Columbia. The large low grade deposit was discovered in 1964; stripping began in 1970, and the mill started commercial production in October of 1972. The orebody is classified as a complex porphyry type having as major constituent quartz diorite, with varying amounts of quartz, grano diorite, and porphyry. A substantial degree of alteration is evident in the host rock, and this became the key factor in major equipment selection for the grinding section. A pilot plant was constructed on the property capable of treating 100 TPD of ore. The ore was mined to be as representative as possible of the entire orebody by sinking a shaft and cross cutting the deposit underground.

The City of Manchester, New Hampshire, is embarking on one of its largest public works projects in history to construct a 12,000 foot long, large-diameter, conveyance tunnel through downtown Manchester. This area has challenging geology with undulating bedrock (granite, schist, and gneiss) profile overlain by fluvial deposits. Understanding the subsurface conditions is key to mitigating project risks, establishing plan and profile for the tunnel, and selecting the most cost-sensitive and technically appropriate tunneling method. This paper presents the project team’s approach for conducting the ground investigation, developing preliminary subsurface profile, and the considerations for selecting the tunneling method.

Landfilling of waste causes the degradation of natural environment, not only due to land occupation, but also due to pollution of air, water and soil. The flotation waste from zinc-lead industry also poses such problem. There is a need to find the way to utilise substantial amount of these wastes and backfilling seems to be a good solution. Recently, in Poland only sand was used for backfilling. However, it will be more beneficial to substitute the sand with the industrial solid waste, especially flotation waste. The tests were performed in the laboratory to examine the use of flotation waste as a main ingredient for backfilling. The use of flotation waste is possible only when it is combined with other waste with specific bonding properties, especially regarding the prevention of leakage. The outcome of tests shows that flotation waste combined with cement and fly ashes can be used as a backfilling material. This paper presents the preparation of flotation waste for using it for backfilling.

Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar's Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum's and White Pigment's Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG's filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta's turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

Artesian pressures of unusual magnitude occur in the deeper aquifer units beneath a considerable part of southeastern North Carolina and extend into South Carolina. The high pressures were first observed in 1968 in wells near Wilmington that were drilled to "basement" rock and which were screened between depths of about 260 to 300 m (meters). The pressure was recognized by Peek and Heath1 as an anomalous geo-pressure and unrelated to recharge conditions in the region. Since 1973, much new information has been obtained on hydro-geologic conditions in the area and a preliminary report on the deep artesian pressures was published in 1975.2 Most of the basic information has been obtained from groundwater research stations constructed by the Groundwater Section of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Economic Resources as a part of Ground-water studies in the Coastal Plain Region. These stations consist of an exploratory well drilled to basement rock with wells completed in each principal aquifer unit to provide data on aquifer characterestics, water levels and water quality.

The Newmont Boddington Orebody (NBO) is a large, diffuse Au/Cu orebody in Western Australias South-West corner with approximately 20Moz Au in current Reserves. The current sulphide Resource is reported after calculation with the non-linear estimation technique Uniform Conditioning to account for the mining selectivity being smaller than the average drillhole spacing. Simulation of Au grade is also run over the entire orebody reviewing risk and uncertainty. There are differences in results from the two methods. These have been investigated and the lessons learned of the influencing parameters and effect of technique alone, are helpful for applications to other orebodies.

First and second derivative filtering (or transformation) of raw data, in many cases, gives a better indication of anomalous conditions than conventional methods of analysis. The calculations involved, which are tedious manually, are simple, accurate and fast with the assistance of Fourier analysis and modern computers.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

Canada produces close to 42 million tonnes of coal per annum of which some 38 million tonnes is produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, produce 31 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5 m to over 8 m. This paper reviews the surface mining methods used to extract such seams. The difficulties associated with steep seam and multiple seam mining of friable coal resulting in lower coal recovery, high dilution and the problem of cleaning fine coal in the wash plant have been highlighted.

Developed in 1983, high angle conveyors - HAC®s are proven versatile systems for elevating materials continuously from a lower to an upper level. Such systems may also be used to lower materials continuously. HAC®s have found commer­cial application in widely varying materials (including coal, refuse, coarse ores [-250 mm], hot clinker, municipal sludge, wood chips, gypsum, slag, excavated earth, various grains and RDF), at widely varying throughput rates from 0.27 to 4250 t/h. The conveying profiles have varied widely and elevating heights range from 3.66 m to 175 m. HAC®s have found application in coal, copper and iron mining, and preparation, in municipal waste treatment, rapid transit projects, pulp and paper mills, cement plants and in gold mining. While noting a wide variety of applications in general, the present writing focuses on Newmont Gold's HAC®, near Carlin, Nevada, which elevates very coarse gold ore to the screening plant. Additionally, upcoming HAC® applications in gold mining are discussed and a proposed multi-flight vertical HAC® system from a deep underground mine is described.

Improvement on controlling the stope limits has enabled the assessment of technical performance in several underground mining operations. Technical performance, integrated to stope geotechnical and geomorphological parameters, constitutes the basis which guides mining engineers in the Mineral Reserves Estimation process. Moreover, there are established definitions to report this information in Canada, incorporated in NI 43–101, which stipulates that “A Mineral Reserve includes diluting materials and allowances for losses that may occur when the material is mined” [1]. However, some loopholes have been identified regarding practical standards followed to specify the way to include and report ore losses when the lost material was blasted and must be left behind unrecovered inside the stope. In fact, general efforts to estimate and quantify the negative effects of operational ore losses only consider under-break ore loss. However, mining engineers frequently confront situations requesting the anticipated closure of a stope. Therefore, reconciliation process should reflect the amount of unrecovered Mineral Reserve. This work presents a discussion of possible practices to integrate adequately operational ore losses consisting of blasted but not recovered material and focuses on how different approaches regarding the material constitution could severely affect the stope technical performance interpretation.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages —basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP increased by 3.5 percent from 2004 to 2005. The nominal GDP was $12.5 trillion at the end of 2005. Housing starts were up by more than 5 percent for the year, and the unemployment rate decreased to 5.1 percent in 2005 from 5.5 percent in 2004. The prime interest rate increased from 5.25 percent at the beginning of the year to 7.25 percent at the end of the year. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2005 rose significantly because of increased unit prices for some metals —particularly molybdenum — and significantly increased production for some industrial minerals, mainly cement, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone.
