INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. Recovery of industrially useful metals from various secondary sources is an important issue in Korea whose natural resources are limited and needs in the strategic metals are on the rise. In order to meet such needs, researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have launched a number of projects to help the nation to recover various metals from secondary sources. In this study, silver is successfully recovered from spent silver-oxide batteries first by distillation to remove mercury. The distilled residue was next subjected to leaching of silver using nitric acid. The study involves finding optimum conditions to leach silver from the distilled residue and subsequently to recover silver from the leach liquor by chemical precipitation. The chemically precipitated products are then subjected to reduction roasting to recover silver metal.

A gold and silver open-pit mine located in northwestern Chile contracted ACZ in 1991-92 to assess the stability of their spent ore pile and to determine the cause and magnitude of cyanide contamination associated with leaching operations. The mine is a conventional open-pit located at an elevation of approximately 4,800 meters (m.) (15,744 feet). A spent ore pile is located approximately 2,000 m. southwest of the mine and approximately 1,000 m. northeast of the active pad and plant facilities. The pile was constructed on a gentle northwest slope dipping 12 to 13 degrees. The pile is bordered by a small river to the northwest and by a larger river to the northeast. Both rivers eventually flow into Bolivia. Heap leaching and processing commenced at the mine in 1988. Since 1988, nearly 6.0 million tons of ore at an average grade of 1.96 grams/ton (0.07 ounces/ton) of gold and 52 grams/ton (1.83 ounces/ton) of silver have been treated by cyanide heap leach methods with zinc (Merrill Crowe) precipitation. In approximately three years of operation, the mine has yielded more than 225,000 ounces of gold and over 1.5 million ounces of silver. Currently ore is agglomerated and hauled to the leach pad by truck and is top loaded to produce a 5-meter lift height. Four contiguous reusable (on/off) leaching pads were constructed with an asphalt layer above a carefully compacted sub-base of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner and screened fines. Leach solution of pH 10-11 containing 1.2 to 1.5 gram/liter of cyanide is applied to the heap at a rate of 10 liter/hour/square meter for a total active application period of 30 days. Leached (spent) ore is transferred to the spent ore pile located approximately 1,000 meters to the northeast. The pile currently contains approximately 6 million tons of spent ore. The pile liner, which has been constructed over a prepared sub-grade consists of three geosynthetic layers (geotextile/flexible membrane liner/geotextile). Long term objectives include washing the pile to recover an additional 3 to 4 percent gold and silver.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled- waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SB) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

Peru has been an important source of metals since Aug. 29, 1533. On that day Francisco Pizarro took charge of the 24 t (772,000 oz) of gold and silver that constituted Atahualpa’s ransom. At today’s prices, the value of that booty ranges between $100 and $150 million, depending on the proportion of gold to silver. Since then, Peru’s silver and gold production has been legendary. Current mine production Most of Peru’s metals are mined from the Andes Mountains and its foot-hills. The Andes run the length of the country parallel to the Pacific coastline from Ecuador to Chile, a distance of nearly 3000 km (I 875 miles). They are about 300 km (187 miles) wide and much of the range is more than 3000 m (9900 ft) in elevation. High plateaus (altiplanos) occupy a large part of the range. Both flanks are rutted by large valleys and canyons. Many of these peaks are prodigious. which make road building expensive and adds to the cost of mining.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

Historically most mine management teams have been forced to operate in a more or less subjective manner. The objectives of mine management are simple and clear. Like other operational managements, mine management teams have the traditional well defined goals of improving efficiency and production while decreasing costs. Unlike other operational managements however, mining teams deal regularly with a vast assortment of uncertainties caused by: - Key production tools being mobile and widely dispersed, and - Non-uniform mining conditions At best in most operations these conditions cause obstacles to productivity and at the same time cause long delay in managment awareness of the obstacles. Planning with delayed feedback of information about necessary deviations is incomplete planning. For these reasons increased operational efficiency remains a constant though somewhat elusive goal.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of vibrations from underground blasting in four rock types to define blast parameters that affect vibration amplitudes and to establish means of predicting expected vibration levels. Previous studies of surface blasting indicated that charge weight per delay period had a major influence on vibration amplitudes. Dividing the distance from the blast by the square root of the charge weight scaled the effect of various charge weights, however, and allowed vibration data for a particular site to be represented by a propagation equation of the form v = K(D/W ½ )-n (1) where v = particle velocity, D = distance from the blast, W = maximum charge weight per delay period, and K and n = empirically determined site constants. For square-root scaling, particle velocity and acceleration data from the underground sites appear to follow a similar propagation law. The subsurface data are in good agreement with those of the surface studies and provide a basis for engineering estimates of vibration amplitudes in many different rock types.

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

This article, though not common feature material, should be of reader interest. Goth made this presentation as the keynote address at the 19th Annual Intermountain Minerals Conference in Vail, CO, in August. Introduction Working backward, what is an LDC? LDC stands for Less Developed Country. LDCs play a dynamic role in world supply and demand of basic materials. They occupy an equally important position in international marketing and finance. I will explain later some of my concerns with LDCs. First, I want to address an issue I think is of equal or even greater concern. Mining and High Technology Unfortunately, many people believe that America must make a decision now between being a smokestack-based economy or a high-technology-based economy. Some would have you believe that smokestack America is dead. Our only option is to turn to high technology, in a manner similar to countries such as Japan. Presumably, when we talk about high-technology industries we envision organizations that came into being within the last decade or so and incorporate microelectronics, biotechnology, and interconnected computers. The entire workforce is clad in lab coats and there are few employees in proportion to the work performed. High-technology industry is not labor-intensive work thanks to the efficient robots used. On the opposite side are smoke-stack industries, that we presume include the older, basic industries such as mining, agriculture, iron and steel manufacturing, ship-building, auto manufacturing, and nearly all forms of construction. These industries are judged to be labor intensive, requiring unsophisticated and untrained employees who succeed by the sweat of their brows rather than by advanced degrees in mathematics and physics. If these are indeed the presumptions about high technology versus smokestack industries, then I submit that those presumptions are a disaster. They are wrong and far from the truth. Smokestack industries, such as mining and the others mentioned, are indeed much older than some of the recently founded high-tech industries. But this does not mean that those smokestack industries are low-technology industries. On the contrary, American agricul¬ture is a very high-technology industry whose crop yields are the envy of the entire world. Mining uses virtually all of the advances available through modern technology. Far too many opinion leaders still envision mining as Humphrey Bogart and John Huston in the movie Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Yet there are many who hold the opinion that our basic industries are dead and that this country's future depends on specialized high-technology industries and services. That is tantamount to announcing we will continue to build space shuttle vehicles, but we no longer need launching pads and landing fields. The point is, we should not be wasting our time talking about "new" industries and "old" industries. We should devote our time and effort to industries that are effective and efficient in meeting our needs, in contrast to industries that are not effective and efficient in meeting our needs. Less Developed Countries That leads me to some of the problems I perceive with policies regarding the previously mentioned LDCs - Less Developed Countries. Far too many people do not realize that many of the smokestack industries being lauded in Less Developed Countries are being operated at a loss and to the detriment of worldwide industry. The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

Typically, rougher molybdenite flotation and recovery from bulk copper/molybdenum concentrates involves the use of alkalisulfides, Nokes reagents, cyanides, oxidants, and/or thermal treatment to depress copper sulfide minerals. The bulk copper/molybdenum feed generally varies from 0.2% Mo to 1.0% Mo, and with traditional reagents the single-stage rougher flotation recovery of molybdenite varies between 40% and 90% at a concentrate grade of 5% to 10% Mo. With ozone conditioning for copper depression, however, improved separations appear to be possible, as demonstrated by tests with Cu/Mo concentrates from both the Phelps Dodge Morenci Operations and the Kennecott Copperton Operations. Single-stage rougher flotation after ozone conditioning can provide a molybdenum concentrate at a recovery of more than 90% and a rougher concentrate grade higher than 20% Mo in some cases. Subsequent cleaner flotation with additional ozone conditioning resuIts in relatively copper-free molybdenum concentrates containing as much as 52% Mo. Preliminary analysis indicates that, with a multistage ozone conditioning/fotation strategy, the process is technically and economically viable and should be suitable for industrial ap¬plication.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always take precedence. Unfortunately, in many cases, the dedicated escapeways (escape routes) for the evacuation of the miners become contaminated by the byproducts of fire from the adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation-control process that would keep the escapeway free from contaminants and, thus, available for travel. A few scenarios of mine fires in longwall development panels are analyzed and discussed. To perform these studies, a mine fire simulator (MFS) was used. This (MFS) provides a dynamic representation of the fire's progress (in real time) and gives a color-graphic visualization of the spread of oxygen, combustion products and temperature of the gases throughout the ventilation system. Also presented and discussed are ways in which the MFS can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety specialists.

The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

"INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.
