A cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) is being constructed on the AA Leach Pad at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine site near Carlin, Nevada. The purpose of the cover is to eliminate/minimize infiltration of meteoric waters into the leach pad. Laboratory and numerical analyses indicate that Carlin Formation siltstone (TCS), a locally available material, has the necessary hydrologic characteristics when placed on the leach pad to act as a CCBE. A pilot study has been conducted on a small-scale test cover placed on the AA Leach Pad to examine the cover performance under irrigated conditions. The preliminary test results demonstrate that the designed cover is capable of preventing meteoric water infiltration.

Dewatering aids are chemicals which enhance the efficiency of mechanical dewatering equipment such as vacuum disc filters and centrifugal dryers. A new dewatering aid has been developed which significantly lowers the moisture content of the mineral concentrate and causes none of the undesirable side effects normally associated with dewatering aids. Highlights of product development from laboratory screening through field testing will be discussed.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. It is not often that the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management, Office of the Solicitor, and Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA) jointly act to do the mining industry a good turn. That happened, however, in the recent decision, Schlosser v. Pierce, 92 IBLA 109 (1986). It was ruled that the theorized "independent mine requirement" was not a part of the discovery standard for mining claim validity under the 1872 Mining Law. The phrase "independent mine requirement" would require the mineral reserves within the boundaries of each individual mining claim in a claim group to support an independent economic mining operation. This, without regard to the fact that reserves on adjacent claims could be mined in a group operation, resulting in greatly reduced mining and marketing costs per ton of ore. Such a rule would render invalid under the 1872 Mining Law mining claims for almost all low-grade, high-tonnage, commercially valuable mineral deposits. Until the Schlosser case, no judicial or administrative decision had addressed the issue of the independent mine requirement. Nonetheless, a series of Interior decisions in the 1970s implied such a rule. Even the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation reluctantly concluded in 1984 that, "each claim to be valid must be capable of being operated at a profit independently of any other claim," the Foundation did criticize the rule as "excessively stringent" and urged the adoption of a "more realistic rule." Fortunately, the IBLA did just that in Schlosser when it ruled that the "application of a requirement that each claim be independently capable of being mined and marketed at a profit is rejected," 92 IBLA at 134. Now, a year after the 1986 decision, there remains some unwarranted confusion over the issue resolved in, and the meaning of, the Schlosser decision. There is no need for this confusion. The Interior Department's decision is a clear and legally sound victory for the mining industry. Grazing rights vs. mining claims The Schlosser case was an unusual mining claim contest. A private contest was brought before the Interior Department. Schlosser was a federal grazing lessee and surface owner. He filed against Pierce, the locator of a group of mining claims for bentonite over the same lands. At a hearing before interior's administrative law judge (alj), Schlosser's counsel began laying the foundation for the independent mine requirement. Counsel asked the mining claimant's expert whether he would go through the permitting procedure, road building, and reclamation just to mine the amount of bentonite on any one claim in the group. Schlosser's counsel proceeded with this line of questioning for each of the 16 claims in the group. Pierce's mining expert testified that the tonnages of mineral on any individual claim could not be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit if only one individual claim was considered. However, if the claims in the group were operated jointly, all the mineral could be mined, processed, and marketed at a profit.

Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.

The Central and Southern Appalachians were the major sources of gold in the United States throughout the first half of the 19th century and have continued to yield gold to the present day. Small amounts of gold were probably extracted by the Indians and the Spaniards but the first documented report of gold in the region was made by Thomas Jefferson who found a four pound lump of gold ore, which yielded 0.85 troy oz., in the Rappahannock River of Virginia in 1782. Gold was subsequently discovered in North Carolina between 1793 and 1799, in Virginia in 1806, in South Carolina in 1827, in Georgia in 1829 and in Alabama about 1830 (Becker, 1894-5; Pardee and Park, 1948). The gold belts of the Central and Southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces are shown in Figure 1. The superimposed circles indicate the mount of production from some of the more productive and well known areas. Although North Carolina produced far more gold than the other states, the most significant concentrated area of production is the Dahlonega District in Georgia which yielded more than 500,000 troy ounces. After discovery, gold production increased rapidly as shown in Figure 2. Production was at its maximum between 1830 and 1852 with combined totals generally exceeding 30,000 troy ounces per year. Production dropped sharply after the California gold rush in 1849 as experienced miners moved westward in search of bigger and easier stakes. After the Civil War briefly halted gold mining in the Appalachians, production rose to an average of about 8,000 ounces per year from 1865 until 1878 and to an average of about 13,000 ounces per year from 1881 until 1915 when it again fell to near nil (Pardee and Park, 1948). Minor resurgences occurred in the 1930's and 1940's. Although there has been no reported production in recent years, it is likely that "weekend panners" still remove hundreds of ounces from streams annually. The total reported production for the area through 1959 is in excess of 2.5 million troy ounces.

Galvanic contact, occurring between electricall y conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions, and the results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteristics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electrochemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

Asbestos production in the United States is no match for the vast operations of Canada and the U.S.S.R. The majority of U.S. production is limited to the states of Vermont, California and Arizona, and the type of asbestos is limited to the variety of serpentine known as chrysotile. What little production of other varieties of asbestos such as tremolite and anthophyllite that has occurred over the past 100 years since asbestos became a useful commodity is of practically no significance. However, new developments in the field of environmental and occupational health hazards has startled the mining industry in this country and has already given a few particular companies reason to be concerned about the profitability and probability of their continued operation in the business of mineral processing. At the heart of these developments is the question and controversy over just what constitutes asbestos and what exactly is the definition of a fiber. To the mineralogist or, in fact, to practically anyone engaged in the process of mining and separating minerals there is little or no question about asbestos. It is not a distinct mineral but rather a commercial product serving specific applications for which a number of fibrous mineral types can qualify. To the hygienist pr health authority this definition is too general. They demand something they can detect, measure and control. To suit their purposes and simplify their task of detection, they have labelled the minerals chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthoph-yllite and actinolite as asbestos, and any particle of these minerals with an aspect ratio of 3:1 as an asbestos fiber. Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system for dewatering waste slurries by flocculating mineral particles with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting flocs on static and/or rotary screens. This paper discusses data obtained from dewatering, rheology, and ion-exchange experiments. A possible mechanism is postulated for the attachment of PEO to claylike particles through a water bridge with the intershell waters of the exchanged ion and the polymer.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

The results obtained for the selective flocculation or flotation of natural ores do not usually agree with the corresponding properties of the constituent minerals when present alone. This is mainly due to the presence of dissolved mineral species which can interact in many ways with other components in the system and alter their behavior. In this paper, the effect of dissolved species on the flocculation and electrokinetic properties of sulfide minerals is disscussed. Dissolved Fe, Cu and Ni species are found to affect the properties of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite and covellite in certain pH range. These effects are interpreted in terms of species adsorption leading to activation or depression of reagents, surface precipitation and complexation of species, etc.

INTRODUCTION The state-of-the art in the area of soil-structure interaction is not sufficiently developed that one can accurately predict the earth load distribution on buried structures. This lack of knowledge has led to the use of high factors of safety in their design and conservative assumptions for the loading diagrams. As a step towards the improvement of the design methodology for buried structures, it is important to be able to apply new analytical techniques and monitor the performance data obtained on full-size buried structures. The performance data should preferably include: 1) the actual stress distribution on the buried structure, 2) stress distribution in the buried structure and surrounding soil media, 3) vertical and lateral movements in the soil adjacent to the buried structure, and 4) deflection of the buried structure. Brown (1967), Davis (1972), Krizek, et al (1974), Krizek and MacQuade (1978), and some few others have compared the performance of full-size culverts with finite element results. Despite all these efforts, a complete understanding of the soil-structure interaction problem has not yet been fully achieved. In an effort to make improvements in the existing design procedures for buried structures constructed in an open-cut, the Department of Environmental Services (DES), Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Howard University, undertook a detailed study of Section II of the Capitol Hill Relief Sewer (CHRS). Inclinometers were used to measure lateral movements of the excavation wall and the total normal interface stresses acting on the concrete sewer were obtained using glotzl total pressure cells. This paper describes the results of the field instrumentation program for acquisition of data, their comparison with the design assumptions, and the results of a series of post-construction finite element analyses of the CHRS project.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.
