Florida’s ancient beach ridge sand deposits, mined for construction aggregate, are highly variable. Rinker Materials utilizes a small reverse-circulation drill rig to prospect and profile unconsolidated fine aggregate deposits more effectively and inexpensively than other drilling methods. Sample data is stored in a spreadsheet that calculates yield and volume. Rinker also uses a Trimble ProXR backpack GPS to locate boreholes in the field, track mine progression on a monthly basis, and to map restrictive features such as wetlands. Autodesk Land software is used to create detailed deposit maps and mine plans. Rinker believes that these practices have led to improved awareness of deposit characteristics and deposit utilization.

To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior around underground excavations made in the mine. The aim of this study was to investigate the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China at the three-dimensional level. Using the information available on lithology, geological structures, in-situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities and interfaces between different rocks, a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in-situ stress condition. Effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, stress, failure zone and stability around the tunnel was investigated. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses.

Carbonaceous material (CM) from ores of varying preg-robbing activity from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was characterized in terms of its functional group content, hydrocarbon content, elemental composition, and humic acid content. FT-IR analyses showed neither the presence of hydrocarbons nor of carboxylic, phenolic, or sulfhydrol functionalities. FT-IR bands present included C=C stretching in aromatic rings and C-O-C stretching, indicating presence of oxygen as ether linkages in the carbon matrix. Calculated atomic oxygen to carbon (O/C) ratios did not reveal a trend between maturity of CM and preg-robbing behavior, possibly due to low resolution of electron microprobe analysis. However, the atomic O/C ratios agree with other chemical analysis, indicating that the organic carbon is very mature, similar to or higher in grade than anthracite coal.

By implementing various mining practices, mine operators can reduce the respirable dust exposure levels of the roof bolter and the continuous miner operators. The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program, entitled AMP (Alternative Mining Practices), that gives a quantitative comparison of these reductions. The alternative mining practices and their corresponding reductions in dust exposure levels that are evaluated by the program include a remote control continuous miner, a half-curtain ventilation system, two auxiliary fan-tubing bypass ventilation systems, a modified cutting sequence, a comparison between single-split and double-split ventilation networks, and a comparison between exhausting brattice and exhausting tubing. Descriptions of each of these mining practices are included in the report. The report also includes a hypothetical case study to show how AMP enables mine operators to select the technique(s) that is best suited to their particular needs. AMP is a compiled basic program that has been designed to run on computers with a DOS version 2.0 or later operating system. It includes high resolution graphics (640 X 200 dot positions) designed to run with video boards that are functionally compatible with the IBM Monochrome/ Printer Adapter. Graphic screens are selected from menus, and can be bypassed if the computer is not equipped to handle high resolution mode. Their primary function is to show proper implementation of the mining practices evaluated by the program. This package requires a minimum of 256K bytes of RAM. Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 40 ft of advance because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation) as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt. INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use. Purpose This is a unique project because the mining and tunneling industries have become highly mechanized and cannot normally accommodate a project where surface disturbance must be minimized or eliminated when there is less than 10 feet of ground cover. More traditional less mechanized methods must be employed and the skills and techniques for accomplishing the work have become all but non-existent. Therefore, this article highlights those areas of specialized skills and techniques. Methods The article will describe the design approach, the method(s) of ground support selected, the method(s) of excavation selected, the planning, scheduling and materials selection process. In addition, the article will describe the actual production characteristics and the results of the project. This approach will concentrate on productivities, adaptations to actual conditions and the quality of the end product. The design approach basically was to insure that the temporary support methods were adequate for the excavation and shoring stage of the project. The final concrete liner was designed using conventional structural design methods with the goal of constructing a tunnel that will last 100 years. The methods of support were spiling and variations of spiling in order to provide advance temporary ground support. In this project spiling is steel channel cantilevered and driven into the ground ahead of the working tunnel face which supports the ground allowing the face muck to be removed with overhead protection’. Conclusion This will be a discussion of the applicability of the methods. The actual performance of the excavation and shoring methods will also be evaluated. The final concrete liner completion results, the actual production rates and the conformance with budget and schedule will be addressed.

A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

1.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter seeks to provide an overview of important factors involved in the implementation of heap leach technology as a vehicle for gold extraction from its ores. Toward this end, brief discussions of the various elements important to this process are presented here. Topics covered in this chapter include a brief history of the process; basic chemical reactions responsible for the process ; characteristics of ores amenable to heap leaching; location of the greatest concentration of heap leach projects in the U.S.; heap leach components, methods, regulatory/permitting considerations; and economic considerations. Most of these subjects are treated at much greater length in subsequent chapters. Thus, this chapter serves as a summary for those which follow, in addition to providing the reader with a feeling for those topics which may be of most immediate interest. 1.1.1 History of the Process Modern Day Precious metal heap leaching technology has developed over the past decade, although the principles of heap leaching per se, as well as those of gold extraction through cyanidation have a long history (see discussion below). However, it is in the past 10 years that heap leaching has developed into an efficient method of treating oxidized gold and silver ores. It has proven to be both an efficient way to extract precious metals from small, shallow deposits, as well as an attractive way to treat large, low- grade, disseminated deposits. Heap leaching has several advantages compared to conventional milling (i .e., crushing, grinding, and agitation leaching). In general, these advantages include simplicity, lower capital and operating costs, shorter start-up times, and less intensive environmental regulatory concerns. A possible disadvantage of currently existing heap leach technology is a potentially lower percentage of metal extraction being obtained from the ore than would be the case with conventional milling (Potter, 1981; Hiskey, 1985; and Thorstad, 1987) The actual principle of heap leaching has a long history as inferred previously. For example, mines in Hungary recycled copper-bearing solutions through waste heaps in the mid-sixteenth century (Hiskey, 1985), and Spanish miners percolated acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto around 1752. By 1900, leaching operations were employing such techniques as leach/rest cycles to maximize copper recovery (Taylor and Whelan, 1942; Thorstad, 1987). Copper dump leaching is currently

INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

INTRODUCTION It is now 21 years since Wiegel and Li published their paper on a random version of Gaudin's model for the mineral liberation phenomenon (Wiegel and Li, 1967). This paper was to revitalise interest in North America in one of the most fascinating, difficult and important problems in the field of theoretical mineral processing. Gaudin had many years previously (Gaudin, 1939) already presented a penetrating analysis of the problem and Wiegel and Li based their analysis very closely on the Gaudin model but they realised that the indeterminate geometrical structure of mineralogical materials demanded that only probabilistic models could provide the necessary quantitative information when working with real materials. They proposed and solved a randomised version of the Gaudin model but retained the essential geometrical simplicity of cubic mineral grains and a cubic fracture pattern. Although their model met with some limited success it was to be superseded in due course. During the 1940's and 1950's the classical field of geometrical probability spawned the mathematical discipline of integral geometry and as early as 1965, Bodziony (1965, a,b) showed that the techniques of integral geometry could accommodate the problems associated with the indeterminate nature of the geometrical mineralogical structure, provided that these were couched in probabilistic terms. In particular he showed that the quantitative description of the comminution process and that of liberation could be decoupled with the resulting economy of effort. This idea has profoundly influenced the course of research in liberation theory and has greatly facilitated its application and the measurement of liberation in a practical way. In 1996, Rio Algom, Denison Mines and the Elliot Lake Research Field Station (ELRFS) formed a consortium to implement a regional environmental information management system (REIMS) for the Elliot Lake area in Ontario, Canada. ELRFS is an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, The discovery of uranium in the Elliot Lake region in post-World War II led to the development of 12 mines and 11 associated mills between 1955 and 1958. During the late 1980s, declining world demand for uranium, combined with the discovery of high-grade uranium ore in other areas of the world, made the Elliot Lake mines uneconomical. As a result, all area mines ceased opera¬tions by the end of 1996. The eight facilities and three tailings management areas operated by Denison Mines and Rio Algom's five mining waste management areas contain 150 Mt (165 million st) of potentially acid-generating tailings. The areas cover 13.2 km2 (3,265 acres) and receive drainage from an additional 13 km2 (3,212 acres). The primary objective of the joint initiative was to implement a personal-computer-based, regional, environmental-information management system for managing historical data and ongoing environmental programs in the Elliot Lake region. The Elliot Lake consortium decided it needed an information system with an integrated, process-oriented and requirements-driven approach to collect and manage the environmental information. Following a study of environmental information management systems currently used by the mining industry, the consortium decided to base REIMS on the "Envista" product. This is a commercially available, environmental information management system marketed by Envista Technologies of Saskatoon, Canada.

In the defunct Gorka quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha and containing approximately 1 million ton of high aluminium wastes and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water. The reservoir is fed with the filtrates arriving from the disposal site mentioned, at a rate ~130 m3/day. An alarming phenomenon is the subsidence of the pond bottom and the infiltration of solutions into the Triassic and Jurassic water resources, assessed at ~40 m3/ day. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Gorka pond is their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and variable pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides pumping out and treatment of about 500000m3 of effluents retained in the Gorka reservoir in an about yearly time. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant, according to a process so far verified on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product would be discharged into the Ropa stream. The brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl), whose amount may reach up to100000m3, might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. Similarly, there would be provided an intake of underflows of infiltrates (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches) arriving from the high aluminum site, and such effluents would be subject to ongoing dilution in water courses. It would be possible to test the system of underflows reaching the Gorka reservoir by means of geochemical identification, previously performed. The next stage following the pumping, would be the utilization of approx. 50 000m3 of bottom slurry. Highly alkaline slurries would be utilized in the production of self-solidifying mixtures. Slurries would be pumped out and temporarily dumped on drying beds, located nearby the Gorka reservoir, and later on used successively for making self-solidifying mixtures in a plant similar to a concrete making seat. Those mixtures would be applied for sealing the bottom of the Gorka reservoir and the necessary part of the edges of the defunct quarry. An alternative solution is the utilization of slurries in the facilities of the Trzebionka Mining Works and the application of self-solidifying mixtures, made in the Trzebionka Works, for sealing the reservoir bottom.

During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. In this paper the authors will discuss some of the benefits of participating in environmental education and provide some practical tips for success, based on New Mexico experiences. It will conclude with a presentation on a successful environmental education program at Heights Middle School in Farmington New Mexico.

Gold production commenced in New Zealand during the gold rush of 1861, and recovery to date is over 900 tonnes, almost 60% of which was alluvial. New Zealand pioneered development of bucket line dredges during the 1880's. The advent of the modern hydraulic excavator and increased gold price led to a resurgence in alluvial production with about one hundred plants in operation in 1988. The processing plants are mainly floating, with throughputs of 50-100m3/hr fed by backhoes of 20-40 tonne operating weight. Some larger plants with more sophisticated recovery systems have commenced over the last few years, with the largest using a 180 tonne backhoe.

Design of yielding chain pillars in deep coal longwall mines is not as well established due mainly to the lack of knowledge in the behavior of coal pillars in the post-peak regime. This study shows that two of the existing strain-softening models have the potential to provide an improved understanding of yielding and, therefore, could form a rational basis for yielding coal pillar design. Analytic and numerical modelings of a row of chain pillars in a two-entry development at a depth of nearly 700 m suggests that yielding pillars are feasible, but the design is very sensitive to the coal’s post-peak behavior.

INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. Small-mine and contractor Fatal Incidence Rates have been a problem for over 20 years in the coal industry, and the rates persist as unacceptably high. This paper briefly retraces historical information and data on the continuing problem and recounts the many unsuccessful efforts and initiatives to address the problems effectively. Next the results of a review of international literature on addressing the problems are presented.
