Recovery of phosphate concentrate at Texasgulf’s Aurora Mine has received increased attention as existing mine and plant production capacity limits are reached. Improved mining techniques and mineral processing of waste streams offer the potential to increase phosphate production without major expansion. Innovative processes are being identified to maximize pit mining recovery and to minimize waste stream losses. This results in more effective use of the phosphate. Texasgulf Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine. The Aurora phosphate rock mine and refining facilities are located in North Carolina on the south shore of the Pamlico Sound. Phosphate ore is recovered by open- cast mining techniques. Draglines and other earthmoving equipment are used to uncover and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore then is slurried and pumped about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant.

It has been observed in some mineral processing plants that grinding circuit efficiency varies seasonally, such as in some plants which are located in the northern U. S. and Canada and undergo large seasonal temperature changes, with the grinding circuit efficiency different between summer and winter. This indicates that the temperature of grinding circuit slurry has a noticeable effect on grinding performance. The effect has rarely been studied. To this end, an investigation to examine the effects of changing temperature on efficiency and determination of the mechanism responsible has been carried out. Plant investigations and laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to study hydrocyclones. It was demonstrated that under otherwise constant operating conditions, the d50(c), size decreased linearly with increasing temperature, while the shape of the reduced efficiency curve remained constant. This effect was determined to be due to changes in slurry viscosity with temperature.

Introduction The history of the Australian coal industry is almost as old as the history of Australia after new settlement. The first cargo of coal was exported from Newcastle to India in 1799. Coal has been mined in Australia for almost two centuries. But there are indications that the first coal was processed in 1877 in the Newcastle area. This is nearly 50 years after the first coal processing in Europe. Processing on any significant scale began in 1944 at the Newcastle Steel Works. In Queensland, however, coal processing did not begin until the second quarter of this century. The dramatic growth of mining and processing of Australian coal since the mid-60s is primarily due to the expansion of the export market in Japan, Asia, and Europe. Australian coals Black coal occurs in most of the major sedimentary basins of Australia. The better known deposits of commercial importance are in the Sydney, Bowen, Oakland, and Gailiee Basins. Apart from the Collie Basin in western Australia, other coal deposits of the Arckinga Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory, and the Tasmania Basin are basically unexploited. The Sydney Basin of New South Wales and Bowen Basin of Queensland remain the major producers of black coal in Australia. Currently exploited or potentially commercial deposits of black coal in Australia occur in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. Estimated black coal reserves are summarized in Table 1. Coals from different ages have significant differences in their petrographic characteristics. Many of the Permian coals are usually rich in inertinite. Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically rich in vitrinite content. Typical petrographic and chemical characteristics of some important Australian coking coals are summarized in Tables 2 and 3. The reserves of coking coals are restricted in the main to the Permian coals of the Sydney and Bowen Basins. Coal deposits in the latter are at shallow depth. A high percentage of these are being strip-mined. On the other hand, in the Sydney Basin, the majority of the reserves of good quality coking coals are at significant depth. The mining cost of these deposits is substantially higher than those in the Bowen Basin. It is usually possible to make strong coke with Australian Permian coals of vitrinite content much lower than the other international coals. But there are many major Permian deposits in Australia where low vitrinite content presents problems. As they are classified as marginal coking coals, optimization of their pro¬cessing plays an important role in meeting the market specifications of coking coal. The major reason for processing Australian coal is to reduce the ash content. Compared with British and some American coals, Australian coals are of relatively high ash content. Unlike American coals, more than 99% of the Australian coal deposits have sulfur content less than 1%. Consequently, sulfur control has never been a major problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized a central composite experimental design to investigate leaching kinetics of pure chalcopyrite in the sulfuric acid-oxygen system. The six factors studied were oxygen pressures of 150, 300 and 450 PSI, leach temperatures of 35O, 65O, and 95O C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16 and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g H,SO,/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. Chemical analysis and oxygen consumption measurements indicatedthat leaching occurs through three consecutive reactions. Temperature was the primary determinant of leach rate and solution acidity was the primary determinant of oxygen consumption, sulfur oxidation, and activation energy.

A model of a new laboratory magnetic separator has been conceived to cater the needs of process engineers and mineralogists world over engaged in mineral characterization and beneficiation. It would be essentially a laboratory instrument for the separation and concentration of various ferro and non-magnetic minerals. Based on the basic concept of Frantz Isodynamic Magnetic Separator, the new separator conceived would not only speed up the work of a process mineralogist and save the energy, but it would effectively separate and sequentially produce about fourteen fractions at a time. In the present paper, the probable operational procedures and the design have been discussed in detail for the various mining companies to assess its economic feasibility. If it could be fabricated, it would have a worldwide market The concept has been patented in author?s name in India.

NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. operates three major open-pit copper mines in the western United States. These operations include Utah Copper Div., Ray Mines Div. in Arizona, and Chino Mines Div. in New Mexico. At each of these operations, the material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. In 1977, 197 350 774 t (217,542,000 st) of ore and waste were mined at these operations, and 302 040 t (332,942 st) of copper were produced. Also a significant amount of molybdenite was produced as a byproduct. In operations as complex and large as these, there is an inherent need for up-to-date reports concerning how much material was mined during the previous day, and year-to-date, what equipment is scheduled for maintenance, how equipment has been performing, etc.

The electrochemical behavior of massive chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) electrodes has been studied in the absence and-in the presence of mesophilic microorganisms, using cyclic voltametry as analytical technique. The culture was principally formed for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. The results showed that the reactivity of the chalcopyrite gradually increased with the bacterial treatment. The anodic dissolution process of the chalcopyrite treated with microorganisms was related to the breaking of passive layers when the applied potential increased. The analysis of the surface products showed that the chalcopyrite was covered with a superficial film avoided its dissolution during the bioleaching test. So, the rest potential of the bioleached samples increased possibly as consequence of its superficial transformation.

The mine characteristic curve represents the relation between the airflow in a system and the pressure drop across the system. In a single fan system, this relation can be easily drawn by assuming different values of the airflow and calculating the corresponding pressure drop according to Atkinson’s law. In a multiple-fan system this cannot be done for each fan simultaneously. However, an alternative mathematical method for plotting subsystem characteristic curves on subsystem quantity coordinates is outlined here that achieves this objective. The Hardy Cross algorithm has been combined with a switching-parameters technique and has been used to trace subsystem characteristic curves. An example using four fans in a complex network is presented here. This example illustrates the nature of the problem and the difficulty of detecting unstable conditions in this type of network.

Since gold was first discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s' mining has been a major part of the state's economic history, according to Stanley Dempsey, chairman and chief executive officer of Denver- based Royal Gold Inc. While the mining industry has seen some lean times throughout the past century, it has always bounced back. Today, dozens of major gold companies are headquartered in the Denver area. The state's coal mines produced record amounts during 1996. And even some of Colorado's uranium mines are resuming production. Dempsey joined other speakers in addressing the state of Colorado's mining industry during the Colorado Mining Association's (CMA) National Western Mining Conference. Some 800 people attended the CMA meeting, held Feb. 2-5 in Denver. The meeting was the association's 100th since it was incorporated in 1897.

In the wake of the Crandall Canyon mine disaster, the U.S. Congress asked the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to study the safety of deep cover pillar recovery operations in the US. The legislation defined ?deep cover? to be greater than 1,500 ft, but NIOSH is also evaluating mines at depths greater than 1,000 ft when multiple seam interactions are encountered. By these definitions, there about 35 active mines that engage in deep cover pillar recovery, in the states of UT, CO, VA, WV, and KY. To date, NIOSH has documented ground conditions and ground control experience at nearly all of them. This paper provides an overview of current deep cover pillar recovery practice. The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Cooperating sponsors for this meeting include the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM, The Institute of Metals, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Pilot testing for the Continuous Elution Process was conducted at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant beginning in December 1982. INTRODUCTION Mount Isa Mines Ltd. operates a copper and silver- lead-zinc property at Mount Isa in northwest Queens- land, Australia. Mount Isa is located in the tropics at latitude 20°43'S and longitude 139°30’E (Fig. 1). It is on the upper watershed of the Leichhardt River and at an elevation of 365 m above sea level. The average rain- fall is 360 mm/y, the greater part of which falls in January to March (the hot summer months). The mean summer temperature for these months is 30°C (dry bulb), with a maximum temperature of 43°C; the mean wet bulb temperature is 25°C with a maximum of 28°C. Mount Isa is located geologically towards the western edge of the Precambrian Shield of northwestern Queensland. This complex forms a north-tilting dissected peneplain which extends in the north-south direction for 640 km, with widths varying from 32 km to 190 km. The combination of differential erosion, regional strike, and steep dips has produced a corrugated topography of low north-south orientated hills and valleys. The field was first discovered in 1923 as a silver- lead-zinc field. Mount Isa Mines Ltd. was formed the following year and subsequently became the sole operating company on the field. Lead and copper ore have been mined and treated separately and simultaneously at Mount Isa since 1953. Intensive exploration commenced in 1954 and an active exploration program provided the justification for a series of production expansion programs in both silver- lead-zinc and copper (see Table 1 ). The most recent and largest production expansion program at Mount Isa commenced when a decision was reached in December 1969 calling for an increase in copper production from 100 000 to 150 000 t/y of blister copper. A major factor which influenced this decision was the substantial additions to the ore reserves in the so-called 1100 ore body which is a massive copper sulfide ore body with a known strike length of approximately 2500 m, a height which is variable up to 300 m, and a width of generally 300 m up to a maximum of 370 m (see Figs. 2 and 3). Host to the copper mineralization is a complex and variable rock generally called "silica dolomite." The ore body strikes 6.02 to 6.1 rad (345° to 350°), dips west between 0.78 and 1.13 rad (45° and 65°), and is truncated at depth by fault implaced basement rocks. It first occurs some 600 m below the surface and bottoms at about 1000 m below the surface. The unconfined compressive strength of the silica dolomite ore varies from 150 to 250 MPa, whereas the basement rocks, carbonaceous mylonite, slaty shale, buck quartz, and greenstone (a chloritic schist) are considerably weaker, varying in strength from 20 to 80 MPa. The distribution of mineralization within the ore body is variable, but can be considered as generally high grade at or just above the basement contact and diminishing towards the upper reaches of the ore body. "Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) are intended to be a negotiated agreement between an industrial proponent and a community, local or regional citizens’ organization. Although the elements have grown over the past two decades from a simple agreement to exceedingly complex legal frameworks, the intention remains the same: to outline the roles and responsibilities of the two stakeholders and the natural resource development on their lands beyond environmental assessment. These agreements were born out of comprehensive indigenous land claims and have become the cornerstone of community engagement today in most indigenous nations. In the case of mixed communities, those that have beneficiaries of land claims and those who are not, social acceptance remains uneven and reflective of an unequal distribution of decision-making power (political ecology). This Differential Social License can cause conflict and a breakdown of the societal fabric that binds communities of diverse populations, resulting in inequality, fictitious wealth generation and failure of infrastructure. This paper presents a case study of how the development of Differential Social License developed in the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut as a result of an IBA negotiated between Tahera Diamond Corp. and the Kitikmeot Inuit Organisation in 2004 for the Jericho Diamond Mine.Introduction / Background Social license (social license to operate or SLO) has become an essential part of the social governance ‘toolkit’ demanded by mining stakeholders in today’s world. Stakeholders are now insistent that companies operate more closely under the tenets of sustainable development and provide for an increased level of community participation. Social license is not simply a matter of communicating with a community, to earn its consent for or acceptance of a project. It requires that we engage with the individuals and organisations who ally themselves with communities, or who sometimes side with dissident factions of a community. SLO is a process associated with and informed by political ecology or the recognition that unequal decision-making power exists amongst stakeholders."

Geologic ore controls are usually interpreted and modeled from cross sections and plans, as they are critical to construct meaningful and accurate ore reserves models. The geologic boundaries are often modeled as two-dimensional surfaces or three-dimensional solids and used as hard boundaries to constrain the grade estimates. In many cases, the geologic model is the most important factor in estimating the mineralized tonnage predicted by the reserves model, since it is generally drawn to separate the volumes of mineralized and waste material within the deposit. Because geologic models are interpreted from widely spaced drill hole data, the accuracy of the contacts of the different zones modeled could be poor. The lack of accuracy in the definition of geo-logic zones can have a significant impact on a resource model. In this paper it is shown that the geologic interpretation can and should be checked for potential biases. In particular, an unbiased overall volume of the original drill hole information with respect to the resulting solids and codes assigned to the block model is sought. In addition, geostatistical conditional simulations can be used to simulate the geologic attributes modeled, thus providing an alternative view of the geology, and a measure of the uncertainty of the geologic boundaries. The simulated geologic model provides an assessment of the impact of alternative geologic interpretations on the over-all uncertainty of the reserves model. In the case study presented here, the uncertainty of the geologic model is quantified for a difficult-to-model, high-grade copper deposit in northern Chile.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. Introduction Grinding is the reduction of ore and similar raw materials to particle sizes below the practical limits of commercial crushing ma¬chines. This size is about 36 in. (1 cm), in most cases, although some finer crushing machines are in regular use. The feed size to grinding machines may range upward to S in. in rod mills, and 12 in. or more in autogenous mills. The finest particle sizes produced in mineral processing operations result from grinding. Ordinary grinding of brittle materials is the result of impacting, rolling, and abrasion of heavy bodies, moving freely under the influ¬ence of gravity. These falling and rolling grinding bodies, which are usually of metal, must be much heavier and larger than the ore parti¬cles they break. This weight relationship is usually in excess of 100: 1. The sustained fall of the grinding bodies is obtained by placing them, together with the rock particles they grind, in a rotating drum or cylinder with horizontal axis, called a tumbling mill. The mill is nearly half full of grinding bodies and ore particles, which may be fed into one end and exit from the other through hollow trunnions which usually serve as the mill bearings. The mill lining must be thick to absorb wear and rough to prevent excessive slippage of the charge. The breakage of brittle rock or ore is accomplished by compression. The compression may be a rapid impact, from the fall and roll of a grinding ball, or it may result from the relatively slow and constrained motion as in a jaw crusher. Breakage by shear is a secondary result of the compressive motion. Ordinary rock has an extremely heterogenous structure with innumerable zones of weakness in which cracks, fractures, and breakages can form. When a rock is subjected to com¬pression it deforms. If the compressive force exceeds a certain critical value an incipient crack appears in the most fragile zones of weakness. This crack tip may first form on the particle surface or in its interior. When the first crack tip forms the compressive stresses immediately surrounding it flow to it, and this concentration of forces extends the crack and splits the rock. Other adjacent cracks may form during this extremely rapid process. Because of the nature of brittle particles, the work done in breaking them consists essentially of the work input required to compress them to the point at which the first crack tip forms. Breakage requires no appreciable additional energy input be¬yond that required for the deformation, since the stress energy already imported to the rock flows to the crack tip and extends it to breakage. Types of Tumbling Mills The general term tumbling mill includes the rod mill, ball mill, pebble mill, autogenous mill, and tube mill. It is of cylindrical or cylindro-conical shape and rotates about its horizontal axis. Rotational speed, liner type, and size and shape of tumbling media are selected to provide the desired operating conditions for the specific grinding application. Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.
