Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

INTRODUCTION Strassa lies in the central part of Bergslagen, a tradi¬tional mining district, on the eastern side of the Stora Valley at an elevation of about 200 m above sea level. A railway siding runs between the mine and the Stora railway station from which there are railway connections to the shipping port and iron and steel works in Oxelosund, about 224 km away. The distance to the provin¬cial capital Orebro is about 60 km. The climate is typi¬cal for this part of central Sweden and is illustrated by the diagram of monthly precipitation and temperatures for the years 1968-1975 (Fig. 1). HISTORY There is no certain information as to when the Strassa mine was first worked, but it is known from sur¬viving accounts of mine inspectors that there were smelt¬ing works in operation in nearby villages in the 12th century. An example is the Gusselhytta ore smelting works, 10 km south of Strassa, which dates from this period. Around the year 1540 there were two smelting works in Strassa, the Upper Karberg and Lower Karberg works. Ore for these smelters was probably taken from Strassa and from the adjacent Blanka mine. In the year 1624 Strassa is mentioned by the painter Jons Nils Krook in an account of the iron mines in the Linde mining district (Linde Bergslags Jarngruvor). Several mines were listed in the area, the deepest being about 30 m. An impressive power installation is mentioned in 1639, including a piston system of lashed poles for transmit¬ting power from the Stora River to the Strassa fields. Its length was 2670 m. Common ground comprising about 20.2 km2 (5000 acres) of forest was allocated in 1689 for the furtherance of mining operations. Until the beginning of this century only the rich cen¬tral parts of the ore body were mined and these yielded, after handpicking, lump ore suitable for smelter feed. An example of the ore grades from these early times is an analysis of ore from the "Big Mine" (Storgruvan) from the year 1873: 48.5% Fe, 0.008% P, and 0.06% S. This same year a total of about 18 000 t was ex¬tracted from the Strassa mine. OWNERSHIP The mine was owned and run until 1874 by a min¬ing association made up of 119 so-called "bergsman," who were homesteaders often engaged in agriculture and timber-cutting as well. In that year the Strossa Grufvebolag (Mining Co.) was founded. In 1906 it was con¬verted into a joint stock company, the Strossa Gruveaktiebolag. This was acquired in 1907 by Metallurgiska AB for the implementation of Gustav Grondal's beneficiating and briquetting methods, for which the Strassa ore was well suited. The same year saw the completion of a new ore dressing plant with an annual production of 46 000 t of ore concentrate. In 1911 the mine passed to new hands, and in 1913 it was purchased by an Austrian company. Extensive new installations were made and in 1915 a new dressing and briquetting plant was completed with twice the capacity of the old one. In 1917 the Strassa mine was acquired by Granges. Be¬cause of unfavorable business trends and technical diffi¬culties, mining operations were brought to a close in 1923. Pumping kept the mine free of water until 1933 but it was completely filled ten years later. Up to 1950 the surface buildings and installations remained intact but the large dressing and briquetting plant burned to the ground in that year. Today only the machine shop re¬mains from this earlier period of operation, now housing parts of the Mineral Processing Laboratory. The decision to take up mining operations again was made in 1955 and construction work began the follow¬ing year. Of the old installation, only the "southern shaft" could be used for some development drifting after it had been completed with a new headframe. Other¬wise, all the buildings and installations required for the operations had to be rebuilt. New installations ready by 1960 were office and personnel facilities, a new shaft and headframe, a sorting and concentrating plant, a macadam plant, settling basins, pump stations, and a railway and yard with transport equipment. In Japanese tunneling history, it has commonly been accepted that the long-round driving is difficult due to the complicated geological condition. Therefore, the maximum past record has been less than 3 m per round. A new record of advance was established in the 99 m2 headrace tunnel of Imaichi Water Power Station Project with an advance of 239.5 m in a month by drilling 3.9 m deep blast holes. The geology of the headrace tunnel composed of pyroxine andesite (ie. 960-1770 kg/cm2, VP3.1-4.3 km/s) which had several clay seams and open cracks and was moderately weathered. Automatic shotcrete machine was used for shotcreting. Rock support was specified according to the N.A.T.M. with each different rock type. The contractor achieved a remarkable tunneling advance not earlier experienced in Japan.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) will be Britain’s first major new railway for over a century—a high-speed line running for 109km (68 miles) between St. Pancras station in London and the Channel Tunnel. The new line has been under construction since October 1998 and the first phase will open in October 2003. The project includes22km of twin 7.15m ID TBM bored tunnels under London and the River Thames, and the 3km North Downs Tunnel, the first major NATM tunnel to be constructed in the United Kingdom since the collapse of the Heathrow Express Tunnels in 1994. This paper will discuss the design of these tunnels and describe the construction progress to date. The discussion will include details of segmental lining design, TBM specification, and sprayed concrete lining design.

INTRODUCTION Excess bronchogenic carcinoma has been demonstrated among underground uranium miners in the United States, Czechoslovakia, and Canada (Archer 1981). This excess cancer is attributed largely to radiation from the alpha particles delivered to the tracheobronchial epithelium by the decay of short-lived daughters of radon. Interaction between the radiation and cigarette smoking has been demonstrated in production of the excess cancer (Archer 1973). The distribution of histologic types of bronchogenic cancer among uranium miners was established as different from that in other men in 1964 when an analysis of the first 51 cases among United States uranium miners was published (Saccomanno 1964). It was confirmed five years later by Yugoslavian studies (Horacek 1969). A later analysis, using a relative frequency method, indicated that oat cell and other small cell undifferentiated carcinomas increased markedly with increasing exposure to radiation in uranium mines (Saccomanno 1971). A subsequent analysis used only cases from an epidemiological study so as to enable calculation of expected numbers. It showed that there was an elevation in incidence of epidermoid, adenocarcinomas, and possibly other types, as well as small cell undifferentiated carcinomas (Archer 1974). At that time, it was felt that the histological distribution of cancer among uranium miners was well established. However, one of the authors (GS) has noted that fewer oat cell carcinomas were appearing among uranium miners in recent years. In his material the fraction of oat cell carcinoma, in successive 5 year periods between 1960 and 1980 was 59, 46, 37, and 22 percent. The association with calendar years is almost certainly spurious, reflecting some other factor associated with time. From the standpoint of tumor biology such a change must be important. This is a preliminary report which attempts to determine the cause of that change. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR OBSERVED CHANGE IN CELL TYPES 1) It might reflect a decrease in radiationinduced carcinomas, so that most of the ones being seen now are cigarette-induced. This appears to be a possibility because radiation levels in mines had been markedly reduced in the early 1970s, and because most of the uranium miners now developing carcinoma had quit mining during the 1965-1975 period. 2) It might represent a change in interpretation by the pathologists involved. 3) It might represent a real change in distribution as a result of increased latency, an aging population, cessation of smoking, increasing pack years of cigarettes, or other factors which have changed with time. Each of these possibilities is being checked. Dr. Waxweiler, later in this conference, is presenting an updated mortality analysis of United States underground uranium miners. His data indicate that lung cancer incidence among the Study Group of uranium miners is still quite high, but the ratio of observed to expected is falling somewhat. It is apparent that decreasing exposures in uranium mines is not yet reflected in normal lung cancer mortality rates. Reason #1 is therefore very unlikely. Thirty-five percent of the histologic types of carcinomas in this study were classified by a panel of three pathologists, 45% were classified by one of the panel members, and 20% were classified by a number of

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

Since the 1980s, heap leaching of gold and silver ores has been developing rapidly and experienced widespread use in China because of its lower capital and operating costs, less time consumed in construction and specific applicability to small-to-medium scale mining operations and low grade ores. Ores treated include ordinary oxidized ores, refractory sulfide ores and even those containing deleterious elements (such as arsenic or antimony) and/or carbonaceous substances. In addition to chemical leaching agents, some micro-organisms (e.g. T-ferrooxidians and T-thiooxixians) and their biochemistry mechanism have been equally emphasized. To overcome the adverse effect caused by excessive content of fines and slimes, research and pilot experiments of agglomeration-heap leaching are currently underway at two gold mines in South China and their encouraging preliminary achievements will be briefly described as illustrations in this paper. It could be expected that heap leaching of gold and silver ores holds promise and will play an increasingly important role in China's gold industry.

An accurate estimation of mining block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. Two of the factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates are the estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit. The objectives of the study are twofold: Firstly, to see how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit. Secondly, to determine the impact of particular nature of the mineralization on the results. The comparison of several estimation methods for the prediction accuracy is performed using the conditional simulation results as the basis.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Since the 1940s, decanter centrifuges have become more important for increasingly complex solid-liquid or solid-liquid-liquid separation processes. Sometimes processed industrial or metalliferous minerals are abrasive or are treated with corrosive chemical agents. Traditional mining applications include the processing of coal, gravel and other products, where low-speed decanters, as well as screen bowl decanters and filters, dominate. These have been increasingly replaced by high-speed decanters during the last decade. Decanter centrifuges also started to play a key role in applications such as drilling muds, processing carbonates and separating SX crud in copper platinum ore concentrations of nickel and gold. Communication between machine producers and mineral processing engineers is vital for the right choice of materials and the design of the right decanter centrifuge for the individual process.

Yeelirrie lies toward the center of Western Australia, 650 km (404 miles) northeast of Perth (Fig. 1). The ore reserves have been estimated as 52.5 kt (57,871 tons) of contained U3O8, at an average grade of 0.15%, of which almost two-thirds average 0.24% U3O8. the ore body is a thin, elliptical, more or less horizontal sheet measuring approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) in length, between 0.5 and 1.5 km (0.3 and 0.9 miles) in width, and up to 7 m (23 ft) in thickness, extending from the surface to a depth of 8 m (26 ft). In spite of its near surface position, there is only one small outcrop of significant mineralization. Carnotite is the only uranium mineral recognized so far, dispersed through a calcrete horizon, and deposited from circulating ground water which was also responsible for the carbonation of the clays completely filling an Early Tertiary drainage system. Calcrete, as seen at Yeelirrie, is quite distinct from the widespread, thin pedogenic horizons, as it often forms bodies many kilometers in length and up to 20 m (65.6 ft) in thickness, elongated parallel to the drainage lines. It is variously referred to as "valley calcrete" or "ground water calcrete" to emphasize the occurrence and mode of origin. The discovery of Yeelirrie in mid-1971 was the successful culmination of a grass-roots exploration program initiated in 1968 as part of Western Mining Cop's program of diversification from its historical position as a major gold producer. The object was simply to find an economic uranium deposit - with no constaints other than those normally taken as applying in the mineral search. There was, therefore, complete freedom in the selection of the exploration model, or models, to be applied and the areas to be considered, though the choice was inevitably influenced by both the nature of world occurrences and the local geology. One of the options avail- able was the sandstone environment. Yeelirrie was the direct result of pursuing this line of investigation through three sequential, but quite distinct, stages: first, a regional study; second, establishing a case for exploring the inland drainage systems of Western Australia; and finally, an evaluation of the calcrete environment. An assessment of the potential for sandstone-type deposits in Australia necessitated going back to first principles, since there were no known precedents in this country for guiding exploration and, as a consequence, the search need not be influenced by established prejudices. Previous uranium exploration during the 1950s had been preoccupied with vein-type deposits, and, although the sandstone environment was undoubtedly being examined in 1968, no discoveries had been announced to that time. When considering the necessary ingredients -a source of leachable uranium, a circulating ground water system, and a suitable reducing environment - it could be argued that considerable areas in the eastern part of the continent were theoretically prospective, but basin depth and the extensive superficial cover of Mesozoic and Cainozoic sediments presented considerable practical difficulties.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GAS) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). GAS are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by mimicking the search procedures of natural genetics. FLCs are rule based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision making. GAS and FLCs can be combined to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and a learning element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. I" this paper, the details of an ongoing research effort to develop and implement an adaptive process control system for a column flotation unit are discussed.

"Mining began, in the Colstrip area in the 1920's by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The coal was used for steam locomotives until 1957, when the advent of diesel power made them obsolete. In 1959, Montana Power Company purchased the Northern Pacific properties including the mining equipment, coal leases and the town of Colstrip. Western Energy Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Montana Power Company was formed in 1966 to manage the mining operations in Colstrip. The Rosebud Mine officially re-opened in 1968 to supply coal for Montana Power Company's J. E. Corette Plant In Billings. Since 1970, Long Construction has operated the mine equipment for Western Energy Company". The Rosebud Mine is located in Southeast Montana and supplies coal to two 350 megawatt power plants located in Colstrip and one 180 megawatt plant located in Billings. Approximately 30 percent of Western's annual production is consumed by these plants. The remaining production is shipped to the mid-west and burned by utility companies and municipalities.

Public Law 95-87 enacted by Congress in 1977 and subsequent regulations require coal mine operators to predict the effects of mining on the environment prior to the start of mining. Prediction of the effects of mining on the local groundwater system is a difficult task due to its complex nature and the lack of detailed published information. An investigation of water level fluctuations in five we1 1s positioned over three consecutively mined longwall panels was initiated in conjunction with an intensive subsidence monitoring program. The purpose of this work was to provide detailed information which could be used to predict certain hydrologic effects of longwall mining in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. The results of this case study indicate that water level fluct- uations in the local ground-water system above longwall panels is associated with subsidence and that the static water level will generally re- establish at or near the pre-mining elevation after mining is completed.

The last time Mining Engineering presented an issue with a special focus on Canadian Mining (ME, August 2008 pp. 28 to 40) things were going well. A feature story took a look at Xstrata?s Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury and the booming Canadian oil sands were discussed at length. Potash prices were soaring, large diamonds were being found and British Columbia was launching plans to find more workers. How things have changed in six short months. What began as a mortgage crisis grew into a credit crisis, then mutated into a financial crisis, that has taken its toll on the value of bonds, loans, stocks, real estate and commodities. Miners that were flying high on unprecedented commodity prices six months ago have begun scaling back with delays, shut downs and layoffs as they struggle to survive this most recent economic downturn.

To many, petroleum exploration and successful geophysics , are partly synonomous, This is not because natural petroleum is usually concentrated as a liquid, nor certainly not because oil can be detected directly. The reason is Chat geophysics helps to at least better understand and sometimes, to even explain the essential geology involved. That groundwater is similarly a liquid with all but a few of its basic geologic relationships practically identical to petroleum, seems to have escaped many of those most interested and responsible for complete geo-hydrologic knowledge. The paramount need to use every means at our disposal for maintaining and expanding our crustal resources reserves are generally obvious, However, in view of the rapidly mounting requirements, continual re-emphasis is worthwhile.

One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are some- times large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County) , West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar re- treat mining. Findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water levels at shallower depths. Post-mining values of hydraulic conductivity were typically somewhat higher than pre-mining values. Changes in water chemistry associated with mining were not sufficient to render the water unfit for human consumption.

How do you think the US Bureau of Mines closing will affect SME? The demise of the bureau represents a challenge, an opportunity and, above all, new responsibilities for our profession. A lot of good professionals are seeking new positions. A lot of worthwhile research is available for transfer to the private sector. Logic dictates that worthwhile projects of any defunded government activities should find support in the private sector. The bureau may be gone but its legacy is deeply rooted in the profession. The bureau’s contributions will be remembered as long as there are mines and miners. Its1994 research program was divided into three major areas: environ-mental technology; health, safety and mining technology; and minerals and materials science. There must be a place in either the government or private sector to continue these worthwhile activities.

For several years iron ore processing plants, located in the northern U.S. experienced seasonal decreases in the grinding efficiency of their primary autogenous mills. Kawatra and Eisele (1992) studied this phenomenon in an operating plant and characterized it in terms of specific energy consumption (Fig. 1) and production of critical size material (Fig. 2). Critical size material is defined as ore that is too small to be effective grinding media and too large to be ground. This data showed that both specific energy consumption and critical size production increased during the winter months. The increased energy consumption was in part a result of an increase in the viscosity of the mill pulp at colder pulp temperatures. However, viscosity could not fully explain the changes in critical size production. These changes are most likely due to changes in the breakage characteristics of the ore. Other studies were also conducted to determine if thermal and physical properties of iron ore changed at colder temperatures. These are summarized below:
