A longwall face conveyor system serves the primary function as all material handling systems; i.e., to transport material between the source and its destination. However, the conveyor system must provide many other functions as opposed to the traditional belt conveyor system. In this paper, we will attempt to contrast the longwall face conveyor system with a belt conveyor system. In addition, the unique problems encountered along with the solutions to these problems will be covered. Table 1 lists the characteristics required of each conveyor system. The table demonstrates the contrast in the two systems. Both must be designed specifically to encounter its unique problems. The balance of this paper will explain how the longwall face conveyor is designed to address its requirements.

INTRODUCTION The Ningyo-toge Mine is located in the western part of Honshu, about 800 km from Tokyo. Since the discovery of uranium ore deposit at Ningyo-toge in 1955, different kinds of mining and milling tests have been carried out. A new pilot plant of milling and UF6 conversion is also being under construction. Operations are scheduled to start by the end of this year. In 1979, the uranium enrichment pilot plant was constructed at Ningyo-toge and test operations have started. Thus, the Ningyo-toge area is assigned to undertake the Research and Development of the upstream of the nuclear fuel cycle in Japan. PNC has been strengthening its security measures more than ever. This paper will focus on the disposal of wasted material, especially on the disposal of heap leaching residue, in Japan. URANIUM ORE DEPOSITS The uranium of the Ningyo-toge Mine is characterized genetically by epigenetic sedimentary type deposits. They occur in the host rock of Neogene tertiary fluviatile conglomerates and sandstones which unconformably overlies the Mesozoic-Palaeogene granitic basement covered with lucustrine deposits and volcanic ejecta. More than 12 deposits have been found over the area of approximately 160 km2, and distribution of the deposits are strongly controlled by the so-called channel structure, probably remnants of paleo-streams on the denudation surface of the underlying grantic basement. Each ore body has different shape and dimension respectively, but about 2-3 meters thickness with the average grade of 0.05-0.2% U308 is common feature of the ore bodies. The ore is soft and loose, and it is composed of common rock forming minerals of allogenic origin and their altered products. The chemical composition of the ore depends on the constituents of the country rocks or the pebbles. A primary mineral, ningyoite and secondary mineral, autunite are major ore minerals, although three primary tetravalent minerals and thirteen secondary hexavalent minerals have also been detected. MINING EXPERIMENT Since 1959, various types of underground mining tests have been carried out at Ningyo-toge Mine. The room and pillar method was safe and simple, although the uranium ore recovery was below 70%. After experiment of the retreating long-wall method and slicing mining method, it was found that the modified long wall method was the most appropriate for the underground mining of the Ningyo-toge uranium deposits. This method was completed successfully to increase efficiency up to 2 or 3 times, as compared to conventional methods. MILLING EXPERIMENT In 1964, a small test mill was constructed at Ningyo-toge, and a milling experiment using the Ningyo-toge uranium ore was started. Re-modelling of equipments and improvement of the process lead to the establishment of the technique of the so-called wet process, and produce UF4 directly from the ore. As coal mining evolves in this country, underground coal is being mined at greater depth and under more difficult conditions than in the past. At the same time, economic conditions make it necessary to mine more efficiently and economically. As a result, pressures on mining companies arise on two fronts and make the job of mining coal underground very difficult. Recent improvements that have been made in health, safety and productivity have come about primarily due to improvements in existing technology and better management of all the production resources. However, this trend can continue only so far and thus innovation will be needed to continue the improvement. This paper deals with a concept that, on the surface, appears to be more efficient in terms of the costs to provide ventilation. The resulting design is oriented toward increasing the ventilation efficiency through use of a unidirectional ventilation plan but it also promises to increase recovery and decrease the requirements for development entries. To analyze this ventilation concept, two mine layouts with a similar production schedule were planned in a hypothetical 1.83 m (6 ft) coal seam. The first alternative analyzed uses a traditional approach to ventilation with centrally located shafts and a bidirectional ventilation pattern. Using this system, it is necessary to use large-diameter shafts and a large number of main entries. Using the same assumptions on ventilation requirements, the second alternative utilizes unidirectional ventilation whenever possible, a smaller number of main entries and small-diameter blind-bored shafts in the bleeder areas. The comparative analysis is performed using PSU/TDMVS, a computer network analysis program that is capable of determining the ventilation power requirements at any time in the mine life and converting the costs to a present value. The economic analysis is then completed by including the shaft-sinking and entry-driving costs and the costs associated with the recovery of coal that are directly related to the change in the ventilation system. The results are summarized on a present-value basis.

Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

The effects of autogenous grinding and conventional grinding on the floatabilities of copper-nickel sulfides were investigated as a part of a pilot-plant development project on the differential flotation of Duluth gabbro. At the same mesh-of-grind copper, nickel, and cobalt recoveries were higher and residual sulfur in the flotation tailings was lower with the autogenously-ground pulps. With the ball-mill-ground pulps the residual sulfur in the tailings could not be lowered to the level attained by the autogenously-ground pulps even at increased levels of the collector addition. From mineralogical examinations of concentrate and tailings samples, an electrochemical interaction between grinding media and sulfide minerals was thought to have a greater effect on sulfide mineral flotation behavior than the breakage characteristics of the ore samples in these two types of mills.

Natural stones are extensively used for construction purposes since the dawn of human civilization, due to their unique aesthetical and technical characteristics. Their production and consumption has been continuously increasing over the past twenty years worldwide at an annual rate of 8.8%. European countries lead the race of per capita consumption, with Switzerland being in the first place with a consumption of 144.7 m2 per hundred inhabitants followed by Greece, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy. On the other hand, during the period 2001-2002 the generated stone wastes were 110 million tones according to EU data, from which only about 5 million tones were recycled or re-used mainly in the construction industry. These stone wastes the non-natural wastes such as oils or chemicals coming from the equipment and machinery employed for stone extraction and processing, are disposed in the environment, posing serious environmental threat. To achieve sustainable development of the stone sector appropriate methods that will prevent or reduce waste generation and disposal have to be identified and applied. In this work an extensive study of the stone waste management techniques applied in Europe is carried out, in order to identify the Best Available Techniques (BAT) that can be used according to the type of generated wastes and the waste management hierarchy: Waste minimisation, Re-use, Recycling and Disposal. The identification of BAT was performed based on 14 Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI), which were grouped into three categories: environmental, economic and social. The developed final list of BAT includes waste minimisation techniques, eco-management schemes, in-situ treatment and appropriate storage and selection.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

Fly ash samples were collected from two large lignite-fired power plants of Ptolemais region, northern Greece. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) was applied for the characterisation of the samples. ESEM coupled with Energy Dispersive System (EDS) provided fast and accurate results on the morphology, mineralogy and chemical composition of the fly ash particles. Fly ash consists mainly of aluminosilicate glass, silicates, oxides-hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates and char. Various types of chars, spheres (e.g. ferrospheres, cenosphers, plerospheres etc.), spheroids, agglomerates and mineral crystalls were observed. The size distribution of the fly ash particles was correlated with their mineralogical and chemical composition. Possible environmental impacts and potential utilization is also discussed in this study.

The building of sanitary and storm drainage sewers in urban or environmentally sensitive areas often requires the use of tunnel construction procedures. While hydraulic considerations may require only small diameters, traditional tunneling techniques make small sizes the least economical. Current state-of-the-art techniques using highly mechanized systems of pipe jacking can provide cost effective solutions to the problems of construction of small size tunnels. The characteristics of mechanized pipe jacking allow rapid advances under difficult ground conditions. The basic pipe jacking cycle is used with a variety of excavation systems to permit the contractor to satisfy engineering as well as economic parameters. These characteristics and several of the systems available are outlined.

Preface Pipe heading is a customary and proven technology for the underground installation of all types of piping. In over 90 % of all cases, straight pipe sections are used between shaft constructions since, e.g. this follows roadways or it is necessary from the operational aspect due to pipe control methods, e.g. to use a remote control pipe sensor or comparable control devices within sight from shaft to shaft. Frequently, a straight pipeline is impossible, and is replaced by a more or less spatial alignment due to surface conditions, structures in the ground or foundations. This situation applied for the construction of the Nebensammler Neuland (intercepting sewer) in Hamburg-Neuland for sections IV and V. The following paper is not intended as a description of the complete project. It deals mainly with the special features of this pipe heading, with what I believe to be its somewhat unusual route. This paper shows how technology developed to analyse stabilised slurries can be applied to paste flows. The rheological characterisation of paste mixtures using the generalised yield pseudoplastic rheological model is described. It is noted that the slump test does not provide a complete rheological characterisation of a paste. Methods for calculating pipeline pressure gradients for laminar and turbulent flow are presented. The minimum pressure gradient is an important consideration to ensure that solids do not settle on the pipe invert. Important points to be considered for a pipe loop test programme are noted. The usefulness of the pseudo shear diagram for scaling pipe loop test measurements is demonstrated. Issues to be considered for the design of paste reticulation systems are discussed.

Contractor chose and Owner allowed concrete to be placed using the arch first principle while excavating the 35'-3" O.D. rock tunnel. The contract included excavating and lining 26,000 L.F. of rock tunnel to 33'-I.D. Concrete was placed at a rate of 90LF per working day using a movable bridge to allow batching, mixing and pumping of concrete adjacent to the tunnel form.

In this paper I will try to give an overall picture of the use of pure oxygen in gold leaching in South Africa. Pure oxygen has been overlooked as a reagent for many years. Only with the increased sophistication of gold plant instrumentation, greater recognition of the technical abilities of the plant management and a more definite attitude towards plant efficiency has the recent break-through been achieved. There are, today, twelve plants using pure oxygen in this way as a permanent part of their operation and another three or four presently carrying out long-term evaluations. I believe that this number will double over the next few years as more and more plants identify potential benefits. I have, therefore, set out to look at the background and chemistry behind these innovations, describe the various methods available to dissolve oxygen, briefly look at the laboratory and trial work carried out by ourselves at Afrox and then the different installations, both ours and those of our competitors.

The pressure filtration behaviors of dispersed and flocculated alumnae slurries at high percent solids were investigated with the objective of determining the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high-purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by pH and by surfactants that are known to act as electric and steric stabilizers. The effects of both ionic and nonionic sutfactants were investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by an electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to better understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and cake properties are discussed.

A probability-based analysis method in conjunction with the finite element structure modeling technique to evaluate an entry system stability is developed. Variability of the rock properties and loading surrounding the entry system is taken into consideration to predict a roof stability by using the probability of failure instead of the common safety factor concept. A dynamic programming is applied to establish a recurrence relationship between the degree of potential roof fall and accumulated roof fall index in an area of interested. A probable distribution of roof fall is assessed by using a developed computer program, RFSTAB. The assessment of the roof falling boundary in the longwall entry system is used as the example to illustrate the procedure and effectiveness of this analysis method

Reserve Mining Company completed construction on a major process modification project in June of 1980. These modifications enabled Reserve to reduce and control its final iron ore pellet silica content from 9.0 20.77 percent to 5.0 50.26 percent. The paper outlines the implementation of neutron activation on-line analysis and associated computer control loops for measuring and closely controlling the silica content of the iron ore concentrate at Reserve Mining Company. It contains a general overview of Reserve's taconite processing facilities and a presentation of the theory and operation of the neutron activation analysis equipment coupled with the computer silica control loops.

Ore passes are circular openings excavated in rock for in-mine gravity-transportation of ore. It is a very important component of the overall load-haul system of an underground mine. The function of an ore pass is two-fold: first, gravity-transportation of ore from the extraction level to the haulage level and second, the loading operation at the haulage level utilizing the gate assembly. In reality, like any other system component, an ore pass breaks down either due to a hang-up within the ore pass or due to a failure in the gate structure. The failure of the gate assembly may be attributed to a greater extent to the impact load as experienced by the components of a gate structure as a result of the direct impacts of the rock fragments and to a lesser extent to the static or 'dead weight' loads of the accumulated materials in the ore pass. This paper uses simulations in Working Model® as an aid to investigate the effect of both the impact and static loading on the gate assembly and on the inner-walls of the ore pass. The paper also investigates the impact of ore pass inclination and the presence or absence of dogleg on the static and impact loading of the same.

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. These impacts may differ for surface and underground mines. In surface mining, surface disturbance is obviously a major consequence. Piles of overburden and waste accumulation mar land surfaces.
