Computerized, real -time monitoring had its beginning in the U.S. coal industry in the early 1970's. Over the last 10 years, developments in technology have made systems available that are capable of monitoring and controlling many mine parameters that can increase safety and production. However, situations currently exist where computerized monitoring systems are not being utilized to their fullest capability. They produce reams of printed output that are not sorted in a useful format, and human operators are not able to react fast enough in emergency situations tn tile large amount of information that the systems generate. A solution is the application of an expert system as the interface with real-time monitoring. An expert system would use an extensive knowledge base and human-type reasoning ability to make decisions on optimum strategies. Expert systems have been applied successfully to problems in other industries, and could provide significant benefits to mine information management systems. The use of an expert system with real-time mine monitoring is discussed in this paper.

In today's "information age", we have the ability to collect volumes of data about a company's performance. The challenge is to turn that data into information employees can understand and use to fine-tune equipment, modify work processes, and ultimately manage production. Software programs have increasingly given end users control over what data is used and how it is presented. Kennecott has implemented an information system capable of collecting and storing data at the primary level. This enables plant personnel to transform historical data into information for action. Kennecott plans to expand its data collection and use trending and reporting capabilities to move toward a fully optimized operation.

Much of the process control effort in the mineral industry uses proportional-integral-derivative controllers that require periodic retuning. Retuning hundreds of controllers typically employed in a single plant is a formidable task for the control engineer. Adaptive controllers offer an alternative to this problem, since they are designed to tune themselves. Four schemes of adaptive control-gain scheduling, model reference adaptive control, self-tuning regulator, and optimal adaptive controllers-are discussed with process examples. The control of a ball mill circuit with a multivariable self-tuning regulator is illustrated. This controller encompasses the advantages of the other three controllers and is applicable for a wide range of process variability.

Relatively large amounts of hydrocarbons such as fuel oils are often needed in the flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promoters. The reagents that are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Because the physical and chemical variables influence various subprocesses in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of the clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promoters. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.

Unsaturated permeability and flow capacity exist where copper mineralization is disseminated in segmented, very-low-permeability ore blocks. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated this condition for application to in situ, copper-leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning-electron-microprobe data to characterize the host rock's mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution and permeability. Finite element modeling is used to estimate saturated permeability and the ambient degree of saturation and to gain insight into appropriate in situ leach design. Recommended design modifications for optimized solution distribution and maximum recovery from the Casa Grande ore require: • well pressure injection exceeding 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or • secondary, permeability enhancement by explosive rubblization. In the former, the lack of conditioning and the use of lesser pressures will result in leach solutions confined to the macrofractures. With the latter requirement, pressures can be reduced to 500 psi, with improved recovery and solutions containment.

The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for con¬tinued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. . The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950; the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. The effects of pressure and cake thickness were studied using a split-plot design for pressure filtration of a fine refuse slurry obtained from a bituminous coal preparation facility. Pressure filtration offers the potential to significantly reduce the moisture content of the fine refuse stream with the addition of little to no flocculants, thereby minimizing the volume of refuse stored in impoundments and providing a recycle water stream for use within the plant. Experimental results showed that the final cake moisture decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in cake thickness. In addition, specific cake resistances calculated for the various tests indicated an increasing trend with increasing pressure and decreasing cake thickness. With increase in cake thickness, an increase in cake moisture and the weight of solids deposited in the cake was observed. An ANOVA analysis indicated that both cake thickness and pressure significantly affected the cake moisture, while only cake thickness statistically influenced the weight of solids in the cake. A regression model was developed with an R2 value of about 0.99 to relate cake thickness, the single largest statistically significant factor, with the weight of solids in the cake. Filter capacities were calculated in terms of the solids deposited per unit time based on a product specification of 25 percent cake moisture, and it was observed that the thinnest cake had the highest filter capacity.

Appalachian kimberlites appear to be spatially distributed along two structure parallel trends running from Tennessee to New York. It is hypothesized that the kimberlites were emplaced at the intersection of structure parallel basement faults and cross- structural lineaments. The latter are expressed in potential field and remotely sensed data. The western trend follows the Rome Trough from eastern Kentucky to south central New York. The eastern trend parallels the edge of the Ridge and Valley in Virginia and Maryland.

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnelboring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

Both On-Line and Off- Line optimization procedures have been employed by industry, assisted either by operators or by digital computers. In every case, dollar benefits have accrued.

As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

The decision to proceed on a "fast track" construction project is not" without risks as well as rewards. An understanding of some of the risks prior to start of the project will maximize the rewards. This paper describes the research, development, procurement, engineering and construction of the Asamera Minerals cannon Mine concentrator. This fast track project was accomplished in 20 months. Special attention is paid to the risks encountered and the steps taken to ameliorate them.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safely studies revealed that numerous investigators explored a wide- range of techniques, including the investigation of bivariate and multivariate statistical models. Although these researchers addressed various issues of accident causation and prevention, they, in general, did not investigate through the use of quantitative models the multivariate relationships of several factors affecting mine safety in a causal framework. In this paper, systems dynamics and structural equation modeling are presented to simultaneously represent and study the effect of policy variables related to accident prevention along with the factors causing accidents and injuries. The application of these models to a group of mines revealed that current training practices at these mines do not appear to alleviate accident occurrences. It is inferred that the use of these quantitative techniques can provide a new direction of research in mine-safety studies.

The large population base, complex geology of the large land mass, and notable commercial activity have accelerated the development of underground construction market in China. The projected lengths of underground openings per year in the various sectors are: hydro-tunnels, 180 km; coal mine entries, 40 km; transport-tunnels, 300+ km. An example of the mega projects (being planned by the Government) is the water supply scheme for connecting Yangtze river to Yellow river involving 131 km of water tunnels with a diameter of 8-10m. Several large projects are highlighted in the paper with reference to the schemes for generating hydro-power, mining of coal and minerals, and constructing transportation networks. The related problems of construction and geomechanics are outlined.

Over recent years large construction projects have taken place and will be taking place in complex geological environments. In order to reduce costs and increase safety, a detailed geotechnical evaluation of local conditions is very important. This issue has been addressed in much detail for soils and hard rocks but there is a gap in intermediate geomaterials such as soft or altered rocks. In order to overcome this problem geotechnical engineers usually adopt principles and methods meant either for soil or hard rocks. The rock mass classification systems such as RMR, GSI etc. are the ones predominantly used. The users of these systems are of-ten unaware of the theory, limitations or the data behind these systems. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate problems or misuses of rock mass classification systems in intermediate geo-materials. The main focus is on the GSI classification system since it is widely used in Greece. Complex geological environments, altered, weathered or poor rock materials are addressed and suggestions on how they should be evaluated with the use of rock mass classification systems are discussed. Situations where the use of these systems produce erroneous results not due to their limitations but rather due to lack of experience and incorrect use are also discussed. Finally, recommendations are made for better use of these systems in practical problems

A new moving cone optimizing technique will be introduced. In order to facilitate under- standing of the moving cone optimizer, a re- view of the principles of moving cone design technique is presented. A concept called the negative moving cone design technique is also introduced to help facilitate understanding of the moving cone optimizing algorithm. In the introduction to Subsection 3.3, the relationship of the mineral inventory modeling technique to the ultimate pit design optimization methods was reviewed. Five modeling techniques were described, and four mathematically provable optimizing methods discussed. The broad use of the regular 3D fixed block model was attributed, in part, to its applicability to automatic optimization methods of pit limit design such as the Lerchs-Grossman graph theory algorithm, and in part, to its systematic nature.

An interactive mine planning system that employs recent advances in 3D computer graphics capabilities and 3D geologic modelling to aid with the tasks involved in producing dragline mine plans was developed. As well as offering large potential saving in the time required to carry out the planning tasks, the system offers immediate visual feedback to the planning engineer. This can greatly aid in the conceptual understanding of complex geology and mine plans. The package incorporates the generation of a three dimensional Gridded Seam Model (GSM) as the basis for the development of the geologic database. This modelling method is capable of accurately representing rugged topography and multiple coal seams, including folding and faulting. The GSM is then integrated with an interactive graphics mine planning system in order to develop one model and one database for the generation of the mine design, the depletion of the coal resources and the movement of spoil material. The gridded structure of the model also provides the foundation on which all mine and spoil pile volumes are calculated.

Modelling of cash flows and calculation of net present value of rate of return over the expected life of a mine/processing unit continues to be the accepted basis for mineral investment decision-making. The computer and spreadsheet programs have greatly improved ability to perform sensitivity and risk analysis, hence our ability to deal with key analytical problems. These problems of cash flow analysis result from the necessity of forecasting an uncertain and risky future. Cash flow models begin with the critical assumption of a "design basis", then integrate all of the variables relevant to the investment decision including forecasts of price, cost, taxation, financial conditions, and company strategy. Alternate "scenarios" portray possible future outcome of the investment decision. The potential for straying from reality is enormous. The computer has eliminated the time consuming hand calculations from the cash flow analysis, but the analyst still struggles with the risk of trying to predict "how the project will really turn out".

The computer aided mapping of lead concentrations in soil has been carried out around the Doe Run (formerly AMAX-Homestake Lead Toilers) primary lead smelter near Boss, Missouri, through a cooperative Missouri Research Assistance Act program between the lead industry and the University of Missouri. As a part of this research a sequential extraction method was also developed to analyze and determine the various species of lead in the vicinity of the smelter as to possible sources which would suggest pertinent environmental control measures. Practical applications of this data-based scientific approach will be presented.

Lead and Zinc concentrates are being recovered at Rajpura- Dariba (Distt. Rajsamand, Rajasthan, India) from a complex multi metal sulphide deposit since 1984 by selective flotation employing a large number of reagents. The cost of concentrates' production has been high. Due to the increased availability of concentrates world over and to be competitive, it is necessary to reduce cost of production. An effort has been made by the R.D. Department of Hindustan Zinc Limited to bring down the cost by resorting to production of Bulk Pb + Zn concentrate with enough Ag to make it attractive to the smelters. This paper gives an account of open cycle testing and locked cycle testing in the Dowa Continous Mini Flotation unit. The metallurgical data generated in the mini flotation unit indicate the possibility of obtaining smelter-acceptable bulk concentrates containing Pb+Zn 45%, Ag 400 ppm and graphite carbon about 3%. An in-plant trial in the 3000 TPD concentrator indicated that there would be savings through dispensing with and reduction in some reagents, lower power requirement, etc. Also, a substantial increase in revenue is expected due to higher recoveries by resorting to bulk concentrate production as against individual concentrates.
