Millions of years ago, in late Cretaceous time before man existed on Earth, tremendous orogenic forces began to change the face of the western part of the North American Continent. Catastrophic events marked by huge uplifts of thousands of square miles in the Cordilleran Belt, some of which are barely discernible in the geologic record, were accompanied by long periods of batholithic intrusions and volcanic eruptions. These events produced the great Rocky Mountain systems, which were at the time even higher and more rugged than they are today. Such activity continued into Tertiary time, and during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods millions of tons of volcanic ash were hurled skyward by explosive volcanic activity and carried by the westerly winds to the east where it settled out of the atmosphere and deposited over thousands of square miles of the high plains. Unusually heavy rains, probably caused in part by the volcanic activity itself, together with high winds, reworked and redeposited the freshly fallen ash into lakes and depressions of varying sizes and shapes. Subsequent deposits of sand, gravel and loess covered the deposits of volcanic ash, preserving them in the condition in which they are found today. In many places erosion has cut through the sand, gravel, loess, and volcanic ash so that in favorable localities on hillsides and gullies, exposures of volcanic ash can be seen interbedded with sand and gravel.

This paper describes an empirical constitutive model for underground excavations in rock which equates the deformation modulus to the ratio of the principal stress difference to the major principal strain. The model requires failure criteria which define both the stress difference at failure and strain as a function, in part, of rock mass classification ratings (i.e. Bieniawski's RMR and Barton, Lien and Lunde's Q). Available failure criterion allows reasonable estimates of the stress difference for intact rock as well as rock mass. However, a suitable failure criterion for estimating strains at failure for rock was not available. Toward this end, this paper describes the development of an empirical criteria for defining strain at failure for intact rock as well as methodology for developing similar criteria for rock mass.

In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. Separation Technologies Inc.’s (STI) electrostatic separation technology is a dry, continuous process for the separation of discrete particles. This high-volume process does not require any additives nor is any additional waste produced. In December 1993, STI, in cooperation with New England Power(NEP), installed an 18-t/h (20-stph) prototype electrostatic separator at NEP’s Salem Harbor plant. The plan was to convert waste streams of type F fly ash into commercially valuable products. In July 1995, a second separator was installed at NEP’s Brayton Pointplant. Fly ash feed, ranging from 6% to 25% carbon (loss-of-ignition fly ash or LOI), is separated into <3% LOI “clean” ash and sold as a portland cement substitute in the New England concrete markets.

The trend in open pit mining has been to maintain cost competitiveness through economies of scale, particularly by implementing larger trucks and shovels. This paper considers the potential adverse impact of such scale adjustment, however, on dilution, maintenance, flexibility, and other aspects of operations. It examines the mine production characteristics affected by increased equipment size and attempts to quantify the impact on the overall operation. Reference is made to data from operations that have experienced a variety of equipment size ranges changes over the last decade.

The FIPR/SAPR process is FIPR&apos;s third approach to develop a viable alternative to the Crago "Double Float" process for phosphate flotation. SAPR stands for Single-collector, All-anionic Phosphate Recovery. The FIPR/SAPR process - offers a universal flowsheet for any anionic reagent system and flotation feed of varying sizes. For an unsized or fine flotation feed, the FIPR/SAPR process consists of the following steps: 1) high-solids conditioning with an anionic collector; 2) anionic rougher flotation, with the rougher concentrate sized at 48 (or 65) mesh and the +48 mesh recovered as a final product; and 3) cleaning flotation of the -48 mesh fraction from step 2. In a variation of step 2, the rougher concentrate from the first two cells may be collected as a final product, and the rougher concentrate from the last two cells sized at 48 or 65 mesh. The new process was tested with a blend of anionic collectors, achieving single-digit Insol at 85 + % recoveries.

This is the grinding of wheat to make flour. The other nine are all in the metallurgical industry and are easily the largest consumers.

This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota&apos;s economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota&apos;s iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry&apos;s competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota&apos;s taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota&apos;s Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. Introduction Clearly, many problems confront the minerals industry today. Yet, at the same time, there is too much energy spent bemoaning the negative effects of difficult economic circumstances, low metals prices, and adverse government policies. These are factors that cannot be altered by individual mineral company reactions. In fact, as we look to the future, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will continue to be faced with uncertainty. Thus, an area that demands close scrutiny and that can significantly affect a company&apos;s performance in the future is the posture it adopts to deal with uncertainty. This paper looks at how strategies are developing to deal with this issue. It also examines some of the implications that implementing such strategies have for the role of the individual explorationist. Elements of strategy Whether mineral company strategies are based on diversifying or retrenching, on emphasizing primary production or downstream integration, there seems to be increasing agreement that in the current environment strategies must have several features. They need to be information-based - developed out of access to timely and complete data and analysis about proposed directions and competitor activity, rather than simply following a current fashion. They need to be flexible - adaptable in light of changes in the marketplace and an unpredictable industry. And they need to be cost-efficient - making the most of limited resources. Whether a company is looking for gold financing opportunities, acquiring polymetallic prospects, or doing grassroots exploration for diamonds, these three elements are increasingly essential. They not only allow the company to pursue its current goals most expeditiously, but also open it to hearing and using feedback in the most constructive way. The company can then improve or change strategy as it proceeds. And it can be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. These elements of strategy place great emphasis on the skills of the individual. The need for critical intelligence and the reduced amount of capital available to manage are making it more obvious that exploration is a "people" business. This is in accordance with a general trend in many sectors of industrialized economies, reflecting the widely discussed shift from smokestack to information-based industries. Increasing the odds There is a direct connection between successfully implementing the approaches to strategy discussed above and encouraging and improving the quality of work of the individual explorationist. To illustrate the importance of this, some commonly quoted figures on the odds of discovery success can be used. These figures are arbitrary but illustrative. Assume that one out of 100 exploration prospects actually turns out to be a promising ore body, and that one out of 1000 becomes a mine. Based on our research, chances are the most of those

This paper discusses general principles of underground opening design based on the concept that with the necessary input data regarding the geology of a site, the physical properties of the rocks, the in situ stress field in the rock and the general geometry of the underground openings, the rock formation can be classified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes. Using simple theories for the criteria of failure for rock In compression and tension, general elastic theory for stress concentration around openings and In structures, beam theory for stability of roof rock, and elementary inelastic theory for creep phenomena, basic design techniques are outlined for the various rock classifications. The need for field evaluation of the theoretical design is stressed and some general techniques that should be used in these field evaluations are discussed. Where appropriate, the need for additional studies and research is noted.

The current underground infrastructure of an old monumental salt mine along with using it as a tourist, museum, nature, resort, conference and cultural events place is presented in the paper. At present, mainly in the monumental part of mine, only a small part of the historical chambers, which together with galleries form a tourist route available to visitors. Moreover, the essential activities aimed to make the tourist route more attractive and to change the decor of the underground sites are discussed.

Phosphoric acid is a major raw material for the production of ammonium phosphate (AP) that is used as an intermediate in fertilizer production. Impurities within commercial grade wet process phosphoric acid are important in producing a fertilizer granule with good handling properties. The impurities identified as being important are; iron (III), aluminium and fluorine-containing compounds. Results show that the viscosity of the AP slurry produced increases by increasing the amount of impurity in the acid. Bench scale tests have been successfully replicated on a plant scale leading to a better understanding of the composition of impurity levels within phosphoric acid required to produce a high quality, free flowing, hard, spherical and non-caking granular fertilizer.

To exploit the mineral resources of fine grained ore bodies the minerals processing industry is turning to fine grinding technology, of which tower milling has become an established part. However, compared to other mills relatively little is known about the operating mechanisms in tower mills. In all milling processes one of the keys to understanding how they work is in knowing how their grinding media move. To investigate the ball motion in tower mills a glass unit was therefore constructed and measurements taken of the movement of the grinding media. This paper describes the results from this study.

Wayne Anderson Regarding the technical paper by Thomas E. Finch and Edward L. Fidler, "Recovery of Stray (Thin) Seams in Western Coal Mining." I would like to comment on this subject. In western Canada, most strip mines encounter thin seam coal or rider seams. Although the paper addresses the problems and costs associated with the recovery of this coal, it does not take into account what the savings are. Without looking at the savings, the "Total Objective" is of course not clear. I feel that in a stripping operation the mine can spend per ton (of the thin seam) up to their dragline stripping costs per ton to recover a rider seam or thin seam. The reasoning behind this is simply that this is the price the mine will have to pay to expose an equivalent amount of coal without the recovery of these thin seams. If the mine can recover a rider seam or thin seam for less than the dragline operating costs per ton, a savings will be realized. By recovering a thin seam or rider seam, the life of an ore body is extended by that amount of coal not thrown away. In addition, the cost of land acquisition, associated permits, capital, and reclamation will be reduced as more coal is delivered for a given area. When the above points are considered, the recovery of these thin seams can be very profitable and indeed worth recovering.

Case histories are reported for several soft ground shafts ranging from 6&apos; to 40&apos; in diameter and 50&apos; to 230&apos; in overburden depth for which ground freezing was employed to provide temporary ground support and groundwater control during shaft sinking through the overburden. Cases reported emphasize dealing with difficult site and ground conditions such as working within existing buildings, through very soft, running and bouldery soils, in the presence of substantial lateral groundwater flows, and into salt dome deposits requiring special considerations. Construction procedures, schedule, and relative costs are discussed for each case.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Sampling practices and precautions are discussed with particular attention to each of the tripartite stages of sampling - sample acquisition, sample preparation and sample assaying. Practical examples of approaches to the sampling problem are given and some examples of significant sources of error are provided from gold and silver deposits in North America.

The necessity to protect the environment can limit mining activities and make some areas less attractive for the prospecting and exploration of mineral deposits. In Poland, the main environmental factors that restrain Irumng are: 1. Regional A Protection of the landscape B. Protection of ground water from contamination and depletion 2. Local A Conservation of fertile soils B. Conservation of forest resources C. Preservation of natural, cultural, and historical monuments The regional factors listed above that can limit mining are presented on a map of Poland. These data, combined with maps of known and potential mineral deposits, make it possible to delineate general levels of limitation for various mining-related activities varying from "no existing environmental limitations" to "no allowed industrial activity" As an example, a compilation of such data is presented for lignite exploration and mining in Poland. Lignite deposits occur within Upper Paleocene to Upper Miocene clastic strata at depths ranging from a few to 300 m. The thickness of the lignite is generally a few meters, but can locally reach over 100 m within grabens. As a result, the overburden-to-lignite thickness ratio varies from less than 1 to over 20. Within the same Tertiary strata, and within overlying Quaternary strata, several aquifers exist that produce good quality water that may be contaminated or depleted during lignite mining. The protection of these ground waters is the main factor limiting lignite mining and should be addressed in mining and environmental policy and planning.
