INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current status of reagents used in the mineral industry plus present some current challenges and possible new technologies of the future. Table 1 lists the important families of reagents which, when taken together, constitute at least 95% of the current commercial reagent market. A very approximate estimate of the free world reagent market size in mineral applications is about 1.5 to 2.0 billion dollars (U.S.) using 1985 data. Obviously, to serve such a large market requires the effort of many different types of commercial supply sources. It is estimated that there are over 300 industrial firms in the free world that have a dedicated business/technical structure for supplying reagents related to the mining industry. There are a number of characteristics which are associated with the product families listed in Table 1. Understanding these characteristics helps to provide a realistic economic/technical basis for outlining future challenges in mining chemicals. 1.Essentially all of the products listed are old chemistry in the sense that the molecules have been known and manufactured for at least 25 years. This has not been a highly dynamic field of endeavor from the viewpoint of new product introduction. 2. The greater majority of the products listed can be viewed in commercial terms as "commodity" chemicals, that is, they are available from many sources and the pricing of a some- what generic product generally dominates differences in product quality or uniqueness. With commodity pricing, reagent suppliers significantly reduce research expenditures, loosen product quality somewhat if the applications of the reagents allow, etc. in order to be cost competitive.

"?irovski Vrh" Uranium deposit in Slovenia is type of mineralized sediments in ore bearing belts of deflected S-structure, in which the belt is less than 25% mineralized. Ore bodies of irregular small thickness, unreliably contoured, made difficult estimation of correct contours, which are necessary for design and exploitation works. The deposit was explored by vertical boreholes made at the surface and by boreholes fanned from drives. For the purpose of application of this estimation method, 1 m composites have been made in slices which were parallel to the referential belt plane. Estimation was made for 1,5m x 1,5m x lm blocks which do correspond to the size of the containers in the ore transport stage. Two variables have been used: the first, indicator of function (ore=1, waste material =0) and kriging method; the second, logarithmical content of Uranium and Minimum Mean Square Error Estimation (MMSEE) method. Based on estimated values of those variables, probability of ore quantity as well as Uranium content over determined cut-off were calculated for each block. Those two parameters enable determination of the most probable form of the ore body in ecah one metter slice. Estimation of sixteen small blocks in a large 1,5m x 1,5m x 1m block made possible estimation of ore quantity and its content for the determined cut-off, as well as categorization of exploration. This method is being used for estimation of ore reserves and planning of exploration operations. The described' methodology was tested in an exploitation block.

The Ok Tedi gold/copper deposit of almost 800 million tonnes was found in I968 because at that time technology had just developed sufficiently to enable exploration of such an area, world markets and prices for copper encouraged exploration for large deposits of low grade ore, Papua New Guinea law encouraged exploration by groups with men, money, management and expertise necessary for successful prosecution of such a search and such groups were already operating in the country.

The Pinglin tunnels are situated within the fold-and-thrust belt structural region in Taiwan, due to continent-arc collision and plate tectonic setting. The pilot tunnel TBM (§=4.8m) became stuck ten times with the standstills to date. The westbound main tunnel TBM (§=11.74m) was buried in a collapsing calamity. The main tunnel TBM shall identify and overcome the adverse geology with high volume of ground water ingress itself. This paper presents our experience and methodology through the adverse geology with Pinglin large TBM.

Surface mine equipment operators in the Campbell County region of Wyoming's Powder River Basin have found new ways of solving old problems. Technology, experience, competitive pressures and an increasing grasp of economies of scale have driven mine operators, equipment manufacturers and suppliers to specialization of applications. In economic terms, today's coal price of $4.95/t ($4.50/st) equates to $2.53/t ($2.30/st) in 1980 terms - an incomprehensible value at that time. This article describes some examples of change and adaptation made by Powder River Basin coal operators in overburden stripping equipment and techniques. It focuses on the evolution of the design and use draglines, shovels, trucks, scrapers and dozers.

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

Longwall and/or room-and-pillar mining operations in multiple coal seams could not only induce subsurface and surface subsidence but also cause interactions between these mined coal seams. The interaction might destabilize mine structures and subsequently induce additional strata movements. Mechanical models to utilize the predicted subsurface deformations to assess the interactions and the consequences have been developed. The models are incorporated into a computer program, CISPM-MS, for predicting the final surface movements and deformations as well as the mining interactions associated with multi-seam coal mining operations. It predicts final surface movements and deformations caused by the individual mining operations and by the interactive effects. The program can also be used to assess mine structural stability in multi-seam mining operations. The paper presents the developed interaction models and their application in surface subsidence prediction caused by multi-seam mining operations. A case study involving mining in two coal seams, using longwall and room-and-pillar mining methods, respectively, will be used to validate the program.

It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. successfully commissioned two copper SX-EW plants in late 1995. The design of these solvent extraction plants is such that chloride tenors of 30-35 g/l can be tolerated in the leach solution with no contamination of the electrolyte. The design was carried out in conjunction with Bechtel-ARA engineers and was based on the successful application of the available technology in the market; this mainly focused on decreasing the aqueous entrainment in the organic phase. This entrainment can reach 20,000 ppm in conventional plants.

During the 1950's and 1960's a program of geologic mapping of counties has been underway in Nevada by geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines. The aping has been done principally at reconnaissance scales, with more detailed work in local areas. Geologic maps are either published or open-filed for about a dozen counties at scales of 1:200,000 or 1:250,000. One by-product of the geologic mapping has been the recognition of about 80 Tertiary volcanic centers from which large or very large volumes of volcanic material ranging from rhyolitic to andesitic in composition have been erupted. For purposes of this discussion these are regarded as the major centers; the tally does not include hundreds and perhaps thousands of small rhyolitic domes and plugs and basaltic vents. About 15 to 20 of the 80 major centers are believed to be calderas ranging in diameter from 3 to 25 miles. Some have been described in the literature by geologists of the Nevada Test Site and others. However, the vast majority of the 80 centers have not been described in print, and we are indebted to our colleagues for locating them for us in many of the counties. Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. Because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata, the extrapolation of rock properties obtained from core samples to the surrounding areas can cause problems. To address this issue, a method of rapid strength testing in situ using a borehole penetrometer is being developed. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. Rock strengths are determined di¬rectly on the drill-hole wall. The latest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 38.1-mm- (1.5-in.-) diam hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for the drilling of test holes with production mine equipment such as a roof bolter. The new penetrometer allows for the possibility of a broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.

The success of the heap leaching process for extracting precious metals from low grade ores in many cases depends on successful agglomeration of clay fines. This paper relates the development of a new agglomera­tion agent, named Leachit, that has demon­strated an ability in some ores to decrease leaching time. Data from a commercial test­ing laboratory is presented to illustrate a comparison of leaching efficiencies with other agglomerative agents, such as lime and portland cement. Conclusions will point out certain advantages of Leachit to the heap leaching gold recovery industry.

The differentiation between saturated and un-saturated soils becomes necessary due to basic differences in their nature and engineering behavior. The most important difference is the existence of a suction zone, above the water table, in unsaturated soils. Pore water pressure in this zone is always negative and the shear strength is greater than the one in saturated soils. This is due to an occasional and apparent component in the Mohr-Coulomb equation, which appears in unsaturated soils. In slope stability analysis of unsaturated soils, the factor of safety increases due to this occasional cohesion component of the shear strength. However, the suction zone tends to disappear because of rainfall. In these cases the factor of safety decreases and eventually the slope may fail. In this article, a parametric study of the effect of suction zone fluctuation due to precipitation in slope stability is examined. For this purpose a Combined Hydrology and Stability Model (CHASM) has been applied.

In situ experiments at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site (NTS) have extended the technology of propellant-based fracturing to include liquid- filled, uncased boreholes. Previous work had developed the technology for liquid-free, uncased wellbores. Test results show that fracturing behavior is considerably more complex in liquid- filled boreholes than in the liquid-free case. Compared to liquid-free boreholes, liquid-filled boreholes have faster pressure risetimes and lower peak pressures, large hydraulic-type fractures propagating several meters beyond the end of the test zone, numerous oscillations in the pressure history, and variable types of fracturing within a single test region. Multiple fracturing is initiated in the wellbore of a fluid-filled borehole when the proper propellant mixture is used but, unlike fluid-free wellbores where up to eight fractures propagate, only one to three hydraulic- and/or shear-type fractures propagate. Hydrodynamic effects involving liquid compression during borehole pressurization appear to be responsible for the differing phenomena observed in fluid- filled boreholes.

The Robinson district, Ely, Nevada is a hydrogeologically complex system with several distinguishable geologic blocks, each with a distinct background groundwater chemistry. To discriminate between background and mine-impacted groundwater, background wells, monitoring wells, pit lakes, waste rock seeps, and surface water samples were analyzed for a suite of major cations and anions, together with trace and precious metals, rare earth elements, 2H-deuterium and 18O/16O. The data allowed identification of groundwater flow paths, verification of hydrochemical source areas and characterization of natural attenuation mechanisms (e.g., mixing, dilution and mineral precipitation) that control the concentration and migration of metals at the site.

Somebody sure gave me the wrong title. I can talk much more freely about the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the DRILLING industry in New Mexico. In a word, it is being "clobbered." It doesn't seem like very long ago that my brothers and I were busy trying to find enough new equipment (and trying to talk bankers into lending us enough money) to keep up with drilling work we could get. Seemed like no matter how hard we worked, and how much money we borrowed, we were always one step behind where we wanted to be. We had so many holes to drill that all our crews were working three shifts a day, and over several states. The nation needed energy, and we were ready to help supply it. Exploration and development drilling jobs were all going full-blast. We had trouble keeping up with them. With luck, we figured we'd be able to get all our equipment out of hock before all the necessary uranium mines were developed.

Extensive mineralization in the basal part of the Duluth Complex of Middle Proterozoic (Keweenawan) age in northeast Minnesota has been explored during the past 30 years as a potential source of copper and nickel from sulfide-bearing assemblages. Very large resources of low grade and marginal material have been delineated by drilling and by test shafts sunk by at least five private mining companies, but none of the properties has yet been mined. With few exceptions, grade and tonnage figures for specific properties have not been released, but the magnitude of the resources has been estimated by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources as constituting several billion tons of low grade and marginal copper- and nickel-bearing material - a major combined copper-nickel resource of international importance.
