Because of the high cost of obtaining coal washability samples, it has been difficult in the past to obtain washability variograms. As a result, it could not be determined if the geostatistical prediction tool known as kriging can be applied to predict in situ coal washability characteristics. This paper presents the obtained variogram models for the Upper Freeport coal seam in western Pennsylvania. Variogram model parameters are presented for a total of 27 models. They are for four different variables: float- weight, ash, sulfur, and Btu, at seven different specific gravities: 1.275, 1.300, 1.325, 1.400, 1.600, 1.800, and 1.80,Sink. Based on the obtained variogram results, it can be con¬cluded that all attributes of coal washability show definite spatial correlation structures, and, consequently, geostatistics can be used to predict the in situ coal washability characteristics.

The results of an engineering study of fiber-reinforced cemented tailings are presented. These tests were conducted to evaluate the potential for using fibers to increase the strength of cemented tailings used as backfill for ground support in the undercut -and - fill mining method in a mine subject to high horizontal stresses and rock bursts. Stress-strain measurements indicate that fibers not only increase the peak compressive tensile and flexural strengths of cemented tailings, but limit reductions in residual strength following failure. Results also show the effect of water content, fiber type, fiber density, and curing time on strength.

Even with conservative mine planning, rib instability can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation. sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected that culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

The leaching of gold in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants in an autoclave has been investigated. Also studied are thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the ammonia leaching of gold and silver. The variables studied included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of ammonia, ammonium, and various anions. Arrhenius activation energy values were found to be between 47.1 kJ/mol and 86.2 kJ/mol depending upon the kinds of oxidants used. An electrochemical reaction controlling mechanism has been proposed for the dissolution reaction. The leaching behavior of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants has also been investigated. The samples tested included sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were better than 96% within 2-3 hours of leaching time.

This paper surveys noise levels, noise exposure patterns, and frequency spectra found in the mining environment; the effects of mining noise on the working population; and the quantification of hearing loss in the coal mining industry. Federal mining noise regulations and the present state of the industry, with respect to noise control technology, are discussed. Examples of proven noise controls for mining are included along with measured noise reductions.

This paper presents a review of halogen solvents used in the processing of precious metals. Reagents of widely varying chemical structures, such as chlorine gas, calcium and sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, iodine and bromine have been used for precious metal extraction. None of these chemicals are a replacement for cyanide: however, each of these chemicals present an opportunity for use in processing a specific type of ore. The ore and chemical must be matched to each other for success. Recovery of metal from the leach solutions also offers challenges.

"Many underground mines use cemented backfill to mitigate environmental effects associated with tailings disposal. The large energy needs associated with mine backfilling and cement production operations create significant CO2 and Greenhouse Gas Emissions. This paper introduces post-consumer glass as an alternate, equally effective and lower cost binder agent strategy for cement in backfill that may be implemented to assist in reducing solid waste production, lowering energy costs, and restricting Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Extensive engineering testing, consisting of pipe flow loop tests and strength tests, has been implemented in order to demonstrate the technical feasibility of process integration within industry. An economic analysis has demonstrated that glass is competitive in cost relative to cement and a socioeconomic study has further indicated that the utilization of glass in mine backfill would create a new market for waste glass that requires less processing and reduces costs."

During the 1980s and 1990s, twenty deep shafts were constructed in Milwaukee to depths from 85 to 91 m (280 to 300 feet) through soil and weak rock thicknesses ranging from 37 to 69 m (122 to 227 ft). Adjacent compressible soils, settlement sensitive structures and high groundwater levels required that shafts be constructed without dewatering. Contractors attempted several methods of ground support and groundwater cutoff. Significant problems developed during construction of 11 of the 20shafts. One shaft collapsed; groundwater blow-ins occurred at five of the shafts; and seepage caused unfrozen windows at three of the freezewalls. Ultimately, combinations of grouting and ground freezing were utilized to complete all of the shafts into bedrock. This paper discusses the main design and construction challenges experienced and the lessons learned.

Designing optimal placer gold recovery plants requires a detailed knowledge of the size, shape and surface physical characteristics of the gold particles and the host alluvium in the pay gravel, sand or clay. Results of a recent pilot-scale study of the quantitative performance characteristics of riffled matted sluice systems are presented. For the appropriate non-coherent pay gravel-sand with medium-flat gold, simple sluices can recover gold at greater than 85% efficiency down to 100pm diameter. Alternatives to simple sluices are presented and discussed briefly.

In deposits with highly skewed grade distributions, such as precious metals deposits, proper handling of the outlier high grade data is very crucial to the ore reserve estimation. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle the estimation problems with these outlier data, ordinary kriging or conventional methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. One reason for this is the fact that the alternative methods offered are either too complex or too exhaustive for the mine engineers and geologist who often do not have the expertise or the time to apply these methods. This paper presents a new 2-step kriging algorithm "Outlier Restricted Kriging" (ORK) which can be a simple and a practical tool to use where the ordinary kriging will fail to handle the outlier high grade data properly in block grade estimation. The paper details the methodology and discusses the results of its application to a gold deposit.

Modes of microbial attack of metal carbonates, metal silicates, metal oxides and metal sulfides are summarized. The current status of microbial redox mechanisms, whereby metals in metal oxides and sulfides are mobilized, is discussed. Opposing theories of a single mode of attack involving interaction with a microbially produced reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase and of dual modes of attack involving a reaction requiring physical contact between microbe and mineral surface on the one hand and microbial production of a reductant or oxidant in the bulk phase that reacts with the mineral on the other hand are considered. No one mode when finally completely unraveled should be expected to fit all cases. Some biochemical, electronmicroscopic and spectrophotometric approaches for elucidation of missing details of different modes are suggested. Brohm Mining Co.'s Gilt Edge Mine in the northern Black Hills was a surface heap-leach operation that was active from the 1980s until 1999. Financing problems and acid drainage concerns at the mine were reported in the late 1990s. In February 1999 the Governor of South Dakota announced plans to request the US Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up acidic water at the mine and reclaim the site. In July 1999 the parent company of Brohm, Dakota Mining, filed for bankruptcy in Canada. Because of the bankruptcy and environmental problems, the State of South Dakota intervened and began water treatment. The mine was declared a Superfund site in 2000. Hydrologic issues include the potential for acidic drainage from the site. The mine is at the headwaters of Strawberry Creek, which drains into Bear Butte Creek. About four miles downstream, Bear Butte Creek loses its discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone aquifer, a regionally extensive and valuable groundwater reservoir. Other concerns at the site include treatment of acidic water in mine pits and a waste rock dump.

The boron review arrived too late for the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1993. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 958 kt (1.05 million st), yielding 526 kt (580,000 st) of B203, according to the US Bureau of Mines. Estimated value was $322 million. This level of production was about 5% less than 1992 revised production figures. The United States continued to provide essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1993 was 900 people, about the same as in 1992. That was down from 1988 levels of 1250 people. Total world production of boron in 1993 was about 2.5 Mt (2.75 million st), yielding about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of B203. World production in 1993 was about equal to revised 1992 levels. Production United States In 1993, mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. Domestic producers, in order of quantity of production, were: • US Borax and Chemical Corp., which operates an open pit kernite and tincal mine at Boron, CA, producing boric acid and borax products, • North American Chemical Co., which produces boric acid and borax products as coproducts from chemical operations at Searles Lake, CA and • American Borate Co., which produced small amounts of colemanite and shipped from inventories from its operation in Death Valley, CA.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

On the territory of Macedonia in South Yugoslavia primary and dory gold occurences were known since ancient times. Remnants of numerous goafs and remainders of washaries on river terraces and alluviums date right back to the times of Phillip II and his son Alexander of Macedonia and from Roman times, as well as from the Middle Ages witness exploitation of primary and secondary gold. More recent explorations on primary and secondary gold occurrences date from the period between two World Wars. Over that period a number of private companies, each on their own jointly, carried out gold exploration, particularly of alluvial occurrences on rivers emptying into River Vardar, starting from Skopje to the Greek frontier. The latest gold explorations carried out In the alluvium of River Konjska date back in 1976, and in 1978 old terraces of River Konjska were explored. The Visibility Study was prepared on possibilities of exploitation of gold from River Konjska alluvium. In the paper are collected the basic date an all known primary and secondary occurrences of gold, the results of the latest explorations, and the study itself. To-date geological explorations and analyses show very interesting potentionality of River Konjska and River Vardar alluvium, which proves continuing of he further explorations. For the moment, it is necessary to re-explore more complete view of the deposit. After that it will be possible to make complete techno-economical estimation of the auriferious alluviums and the conditions of the evaluations of the alluvial gold. 1. In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

The Roreto Tunnel is a shallow, twin-bore, road tunnel on the connection between the A6 and the A21 motorway in NW Italy. The challenges faced the design and construction of this tunnel derive from 1) the presence of groundwater, both phreatic and artesian; 2) excavation in loose and/or little cohesive materials; 3) excavation in cohesive materials containing water-saturated, sand lenses; and 4) surface constraints due to the urban environment. In this paper, these problems are examined and the rationale led to the optimum design choices and construction solutions explained. The experience should be useful to others when tunneling in similar situations.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st).
