Observations of the land surface show that subsidence over active and abandoned underground mines is controlled to some extent by the stratigraphic and structural geology of the mines in addition to the methods of mining and the thickness of the seam mined. Exposures in highwalls of surface mines that intersect abandoned underground mines in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama illustrate this, showing sandstone beds that act as beams bridging openings and interbedded shale beds crumbling. Stratigraphic changes observed in the district are extremely variable and calculations regarding subsidence used for one area will not apply to another area if there is a major change in rock types Rocks exposed in road cuts and open pit mines demonstrate a marked difference in weathering characteristics. Some rocks, such as shale, wea- ther very rapidly, by crumbling and becoming plastic, whereas other rocks, such as sandstone, resist weathering. The continuing rock weathering after mining in openings produced by the mining activity and in fractures caused by roof movement, apparently, is a major cause of the surface sub- sidence that may occur years after the mines are abandoned.

Many systems which are modelled mathematically result in a model where the relationships between some or all of the parameters are found to be non-linear. These systems are usually complicated further by a desire to make the system achieve multiple and often conflicting objectives or goals simultaneously. Rozwadowski (1970) developed a model to describe the total discounted net profit of a mine as a function of the amount of ore developed and of the grade of the amount of ore mined. Dynamic programming was used to determine the policy which gave the maximum net present value. In this paper it is shown that the relationships between the variables can be approximated by piecewise linear functions. This is amenable to solution by an algorithm based on the simplex algorithm of linear programming. The goals of maximizing the net present value, the total net profit and the total gold output are incorporated simultaneously into a goal programming formulation of the system. The resulting model is characterized by a large number of disconnected constraints. These are decomposed into several smaller problems and the problem solved. The solution is examined to discover the sensitivity of the system to changes in certain parameters. In particular the interaction between the three goals is analysed to determine whether there is conflict between any of the goals and, if so, what the trade-offs between the conflicting goals are.

The in situ elastic moduli of rock are measured holographically by a borehole instrument in marble and oil shale. A point force induced displacement field is recorded with double expo- sure holography. Data consists of a fringe pat- tern on the viewed hologram. The elastic moduli are determined by modelling of the fringe pattern. Only Young's inodulus is fairly constrained by the present data reduction. For an applied force of 520 [ ] 50 Newtons, a marble was found to have a Young's modulus of 56 [ ] 8 GPa, near an ultrasonically determined value of 48 [ ] 6 GPa. The consumption of industrial minerals, like most other commodities produced from the earth, depends on the demand for the goods and services that use these materials. Minerals are not generally used directly by final consumers (table salt is a notable exception) but instead are used to either make products that are then purchased by customers, or the minerals are used to make industrial products that eventually contribute towards producing other goods and services. Therefore the demand for industrial minerals in most uses is derived from the ultimate demand for goods and services by consumers. The problem for producers of industrial minerals is that the demand for their mineral product fluctuates greatly in response to the changes in the production of goods and services over the course of the business cycle. In this respect, the producers of industrial mineral are innocent victims, subject to market fluctuations outside of their control. Because the demand for most minerals depends on the demand for the product and because minerals typically make up a minor portion of the costs of producing the product, changes in the price of the mineral often do not influence demand for it to a significant degree in the short run. This is described as a very low price elasticity of demand, as shown by the steep slope of the hypothetical demand curve in Figure 1. This demand curve shows that changing the price of the mineral does not alter the quantity demanded very much, but shifts in the demand curve will be the important determinant of the quantity of the mine.ra1 that is sold. The shifts are caused by the changing demand for the products using the mineral over the course of the business cycle.

INTRODUCTION The Crow Butte uranium deposit is located in northwest Nebraska near the town of Crawford (Figure 1). The deposit was discovered during the fall of 1980 by Wyoming Fuel Company, operator of the Crow Butte Joint Venture. The Crow Butte Joint Venture is owned 50 percent by Wyoming Fuel Company, a subsidiary of KN Energy, Inc.; formerly Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company, Inc., 40 percent by Ferret Exploration Company, Inc., and 10 percent by First Exploration Company. A preliminary announcement made in January 1981 indicated a "probable potential" reserve in excess of 25,000, 000 pounds U303. Drilling during 1981 and 1982 confirmed these reserves and indicated the presence of more than 30,000,000 pounds U308 having an average grade in excess of 0.25 percent U308. Wyoming Fuel Company was initially attracted to the area in 1978 by favorable regional geology for sandstone uranium deposits and weak radioactivity noted in regional oil and gas holes. Exploration drilling began in 1979 following the formation of the Crow 3utte Joint Venture. Drilling has continued up to the present, at which time the Joint Venture is ready to proceed with a pilot scale solution mine. Environmental baseline data have been acquired and the permit applications for the pilot scale mine have been submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to the applicable state agencies in Nebraska.

The world's largest hydraulic excavator was recently introduced at Syncrude's North Mine at Fort McMurray, Alberta, in Canada. O&K's 826t (910-st) behemoth RH400, with a 42-m3 (55-cu yd) bucket, is capable of loading 72.5 t (80 st) in one pass. Syncrude's Alberta operation is the nation's largest single source of crude oil. It is also the world's largest producer of oil from oil sands. Syncrude produces 205,000 bbl/day, expects to increase production to 225,000 bbl/day by 1999 and to 320,000 bbl/day by 2005. That translates to 73.5 million bbl of Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB) produced in 1996, 82 million bbl in 1999 and 114 million bbl in 2005. The North Mine is a new development that will replace the current East Mine, to be depleted of oil sand by the end of 1999. The North Mine will feature hydrotransport, a new and unique method of transporting oil sand from the pit to the process plant. Oil sand from the truck-and-shovel operation will be processed through a double-roll crusher and placed in a cyclofeeder where it mixes with hot water. The material is then screened and transported by pipeline to the extraction plant. Hydrotransport will replace conventional conveyor transport for moving raw product from the pit. Mine development will also use two 290-t (320-st) haul trucks to compliment the fleet of existing 218-t (240-st) trucks.

An application of geostatistics to financial decision analysis is the linking of reserve parameters estimation precisions to a mine economics computer program calculating profitability. The estimates of economic reserve parameters are obtained by the kriging method, while precision are calculated by a technique more akin to the polygon method. To indicate the effect of the variables probability distribution on a distribution of profitability, their values are sampled by a Monte Carlo technique and entered into a mine economics modelling program developed by T. R. Ellis. The distribution of profitability calculations are in essence, a superior method of sensitivity analysis. The method is applied to a roll-front uranium deposit in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming.

INTRODUCTION During the past decade, disposal of mine and mill waste material has become an increasingly important issue. Problems of structural stability and seepage effects on stability have been well addressed, and significant technological advances have been achieved [(1-4)]. The primary problem currently facing industry in the waste disposal area is environmental protection. The greatest environmental concern is over the amount of seepage or leachate entering the ground or surface water systems. Methods to determine the quantity of water seeping from a tailings pond have also been covered in the literature [(5-23)]. However, much further work is necessary to fully implement these techniques to evaluate tailings pond performance and accurately predict the various influences of disposal management on seepage from mill tailings. This study is an effort to develop those necessary techniques. The partially saturated method of analysis which is discussed here is applicable to most situations involving seepage from waste piles. In a conventional type of tailings pond, a slime layer is ordinarily built up under the ponded area. This material will consolidate slowly from capillary pressures and the weight of material deposited above it. In situations where this consolidation results in a slime layer of lower permeability than the native foundation soil, a partially saturated flow condition will usually exist in the native soil. This will result in a smaller quantity of water entering the ground-water system than would be predicted by saturated flow analysis. The finite-element program used in this study was originally developed by Neuman [(17)] and is called UNSAT2. The program will analyze problems of saturated or unsaturated, steady or nonsteady flow and can be used with a variety of boundary conditions such as constant flux, constant pressure, maximum flux, minimum pressure, and with infiltration, evaporation, and seepage surfaces. The maximum conditions are controlled by exterior factors such as atmospheric conditions; but the actual flow in the porous media is determined by properties of the porous media. We have studied the possibility to use electrical phenomena in order to selectively separate minerals with various densities and dielectric constants in non-homogeneous electric fields. This technique is based on levitation forces acting on a solid particle immersed in dielectric fluid. When the gradient of the electric field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the dielectric fluid (pure liquid or electric colloids) will be in an upward direction to float sinking minerals by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the liquid medium. The separation process can be made by using two possible modes: either by direct application of electrical forces or by change in the density and dielectric constant of a liquid medium in which the mineral particles are placed. We have investigated several electrode configurations in order to produce electrical fields which are strongly non homogeneous. Further more, investigation on the dielectric properties of liquids have been performed.

The ability to predict the liberation spectra that will be produced by a closed-continuous grinding circuit is of fundamental importance for the design, optimization and control of most operations in an ore dressing plant. The only known approach through which such a calculation can be performed is the population-balance-model equation. The latest, and certainly most significant, advance made in this area is the solution proposed by King (1990), which requires one textural parameter measured directly from the ore being studied. The main advantage of King's solution is that, unlike the conventional solutions, it does not require the estimation of hundreds of arbitrary parameters that cannot be independently measured. However, King's solution relies heavily on a knowledge of the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram (Andrews and Mika, 1975), which has never been measured for any ore. The characterization of the internal structure if the Andrews-Mika diagram requires the measurement of the liberation spectra at several progeny sizes produced by the breakage of monosize-monograde particles at several different grades. In this paper, a procedure based on magnetic fluid fractionation for generating seven narrow-size, narrow-grade samples is presented. Each of these samples was then broken into six progeny size classes in an ultrasonic mill. The one- dimensional liberation spectra of each of the 42 progeny and seven parent particle samples were then measured by image analysis. The measured linear-grade distributions are presented in this paper. The calculation of the correspondent volumetric-grade distributions is discussed.

A single bubble released into surfactant solution first accelerates, reaching a maximum velocity then decelerates to reach a terminal velocity. Modeling this "velocity profile" is fundamental to understanding the motion of bubbles in flotation systems. This contribution considers the terminal velocity. Modeling is by a combination of the Navier-Stokes equation for flow around the bubble and the Marangoni effect induced by surfactant on the bubble surface. Numerical simulation is shown to agree with experiment for bubbles in pure water and surfactant solutions.

Mining of Molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the orebody. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

A computer program has been developed for finding a near-optimum schedule of the mining sequence for flat lying, tabular orebodies. The deposit is divided in blocks with equal areas and definite grades, thicknesses and ore contents. Mining is done by room and pillar method and trackless haulage to surface. Access from surface is by adits or ramps with additional vent raises. In total eight different general concepts for access and development can be realized. The optimum mining sequence is found by a heuristic method. Criterion is the maximization of the net present value over the lifetime of the mine. Specific stoping costs per t of ore are taken for con¬stant, whereas development and haulage costs for individual blocks and also sequences will be different. Correct ventilation and a technically sensible sequence are guaranteed. Beginning with a single block, neighbouring blocks are tested and an optimum stoping sequence is generated. The net present value of the total mining operation for the planning period is calculated, taking into account ore, which is mined during development. The program can also be used to investigate given mining sequences.

Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) are one of the most promising systems for groundwater remediation. PRB are constructed with the purpose to intercept the contaminated flow and to degrade it as a big reactive filter. The most common type of reactive barriers is realized by excavating a trench and by filling it with a substance able to treat the contaminants dissolved in the water. Another type of PRB is obtained by realizing a line of wells in which chemically active compounds are injected. A new method for barrier construction has been studied at DIGITA?s laboratories. It makes use of the waterjet technology to increase soil permeability and to inject active compounds. This technology is especially suitable in the case of deep contaminated aquifers where traditional construction methods are difficult to apply. The paper describes the experimental apparatus especially designed and constructed and the activities carried out to investigate the relationship between waterjet operative parameters and the penetration of the jet in the soil. In conclusion, on the basis of the experimental results, the economical feasibility of the technique is evaluated.

Compared to alternative ways of dealing with coal fines, oil agglomeration has always been a commercial bridesmaid and never yet a bride. Yet interest is high in the process, as shown by a number of pilot plants in operation that are funded by industry as well as government. In the past in the US, alternative ways to handle coal finer than 100 to 200 mesh included flotation, or no treatment except dewatering, or discarding the fines as waste. There are now a number of factors that tilt the economics more toward fine coal recovery. Today, the cost of mining a ton of underground coal runs from $22-30, and discarding even 10% as unrecovered fine coal is a real economic loss. A number of attempts (notably by EPRI) have been made to quantify the effect of coal cleaning on utility boiler operations. Transportation and ash handling costs, frequency of unscheduled outages, fouling and slagging problems, and boiler tube erosion are all lowered by cleaning coal. The advantage of coal cleaning on these parameters has been shown, but the dollar amount varies with many assumptions and is difficult to pin down. The message to a utility, however, has not been lost and the trend toward cleaner steam coal is accelerating. This may lead to fewer installations that only wash the coarse coal, and add back the unwashed fine coal until a maximum contractual ash limit is reached. And, as the proportion of coal fines continues to increase by continuous and longwall mining, it may become impossible to clean the coal sufficiently without cleaning the fines. Flotation and oil agglomeration are the only processes that presently deal directly with cleaning the very finest coal fractions. Flotation has proven its effectiveness in cleaning blackwater and in separating fine coal from mineral matter. It has the achievable potential for far greater pyrite rejection than is now obtained in commercial preparation plants. Up to now, the hands-on approach to construction has been stressed. This chapter reviews the basic tools available for construction design and monitoring of a construction project. It is divided into three discussions, all under the general title of computer aids, since the trend for using these tools-is via the computer. In the context of our discussions, the focus for computer aids will be on the use of evaluation and analysis techniques for coal mine construction applications, including mainframe programs, CPM techniques, as well as mini and microcomputer applications. Although the presentation of material in this chapter may be detailed at times, by no means does it cover the entire field of computer applications for design or project scheduling and monitoring. It is only an attempt to illustrate the possibilities that are available to construction and mine engineers. Interested persons can pursue computer applications for coal mining by reviewing Computer Methods for the 80's. by Alfred Weiss, editor, published by SME-AIME.

The Kemano Power Tunnel is currently being constructed by a joint venture of Atkinson, Kiewit, and Commonwealth. The 5.73 m diameter, 16.1 km long tunnel is part of the Kemano Completion Project in British Columbia, Canada which is being developed by Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Limited. The discussion includes the refurbishment and development of Robbins TBM 189-229 previously used at Calaveras (RETC Proceedings, 1987), the logistics of conducting a tunneling operation in a remote area with adverse weather conditions, in addition to a description of the work and the performance details in the various geological conditions encountered to date.

High tonnage hoisting of materials by vertical conveyors through deep shafts is a relatively new concept in mining that is proving to be effective. The development of the Pocketlift® belt by Metso Flexowell, located in Moers, Germany, enabled the installation of a deep shaft vertical conveyor in 2002. This application followed years of design and operational experience gained in medium-depth shafts around the world. Groove deepening (deepening of a groove in rock by successive passes of a rock cutting tool) is a potential operational feature associated with tunnel boring machines. Little research has been undertaken in this area which is of direct practical relevance to the design and application of tunnel boring machines. Laboratory experiments using single, double and triple disc arrays have revealed an important fundamental cycle of events associated with disc cutters when progressively deepening a groove. Furthermore, in contrast to pick cutters, groove deepening by discs is shown to be an efficient operation. This can be directly attributed to the increased interaction between disc cutters due to the increase in magnitude of lateral forces generated as a groove is deepened.
