A new method for measuring the mill filling was developed by Outokumpu’s Pyhäsalmi concentrator during 1989-90. The method utilizes the power draw oscillation which is caused by the mill lifters. Each lifter bar causes a peak in the power draw and thus a continuous oscillation results. In a fixed time scale, the oscillation peaks will shift as the lifter bare hit the mill charge sooner or later depending on the volumetric filling of the mill. Thus the measuring method is based on the phase shift of the power oscillation. So far the measurement is utilized for maximizing throughput of the primary mills at Pyhäsalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator. The paper describes the new method and the results achieved.

The mineralogy of the Joe Mann mine differs from that of other deposits of the Chibougamau area that are exploited by Les Nines Camchib Inc. It is characterized by very fine first generation gold and very coarse second generation electrum. Successful processing required adjustments of the processing flowsheet, which includes gravity, flotation, and cyanidation. A study of coarse gold liberation in the gravity/grinding circuit is described. Modifications to the flotation circuit and the reconditioning of a small capacity cyanidation circuit are presented.

The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

The preoccupation with cyanide as an environmental issue has been described as virtually an obsession for state and federal agencies enacting regulations for environmental protection. This seems likely to continue in legislative planning, as well. This is despite the fact that the only significant group of cyanide-related incidents has been the bird-mortality occurrences, predominantly in arid areas, and these have been greatly reduced by a concerted effort by operators. What follows is a brief list of areas for which the industry may need either additional information or plans for defensive strategies over the next two to five years.

There are approximately 40 million tons per year of phosphate rock produced in the United States, half of it by flotation. The bulk of this is used to produce diammonium phosphate, an essential ingredient in the commercial fertilizer mixes used by the thriving U.S. agricultural community. This paper describes the mineral beneficiation practices of the phosphate industry, with special emphasis on flotation. There is also an attempt to include those items that might be considered emerging technologies for the industry as it faces the problems of a diminishing high-grade reserve and the necessity for implementing dolomite/francolite separations.

Subsidence profiles over Saskatchewan potash mines exhibit forms which cannot be explained by existing subsidence models. The subsidence is affected by bridging of competent rocks. A modification of the theory can explain the observed displacement of subsidence profiles due to bridging. An unusual shallow secondary subsidence trough has been observed extending two to three kilometers outside the primary subsidence. The secondary subsidence is explained as an elastic compression inresponse to a drop in pore water pressure in the vicinity of the caving zone. The concept of pore water pressure may lead to a safe extraction limit for Saskatchewan mines.

A thorough Life Cycle Assessment of ilmenite extraction and processing to yield synthetic rutile (ERMS/EARS process) was performed according to ISO norms 14040 and updates. The LCA includes the parallel application of selected environmental impact assessment methods (as illustrated in Ulgiati et al. [1]), the results of which are compared and discussed. A MI value of 16 kg of abiotic matter per kg of output rutile is calculated, which is largely determined by the amount of coal that is employed in the reduction and drying steps. The Gross Energy Requirement is 3.33 * 107 MJ/kg, a value which we found to be comparable with that previously calculated by us for alumina. Finally, the increase factor of the Emergy Intensity from the raw mineral to the marketed rutile is 3.19, which points to a comparatively medium-low requirement for indirect environmental support. GWP and AP were calculated to be respectively 1.89 kg(CO2eq)/kg and 12.7 g(SO2eq)/kg.

More than 544 Mt (600 million st) of coal are handled annually for use by this country's coal fired power plants. Coal is transported in various ways: overland conveyors, railcars, trucks and barges. It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise. To ensure that power plant availability is not jeopardized by coal handling problems, the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) developed a research program aimed at addressing utility coal handling problems. The program has identified key areas, and is investigating the cost and cause of coal handling problems as well as the solutions to these problems. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop a "handleability index" that utilities can use in their coal specifications or hardware for a utility's sampling system to predict handleability and determine if a coal shipment should be accepted.

The size distribution of coal cut by a mining machine is an important performance factor. It is well established that the main machine system variable that affects product size is the depth of cut. In essence, the greater the amount of coal won by a machine cutting at shallow depths, the greater the proportion of dust and fines produced. Conversely, deep cuts produce less dust and a generally larger product size. When cutting with a rotating drum, as well as with a longwall shearer, the depth of cut always varies from zero in the vicinity of the roof and floor, where most of the dust and fines are produced, to a maximum at mid-drum level. In this paper, minimizing the amount of shallow cutting with a cutting drum is discussed, and the effects of the drum cutting and design parameters on cross-sectional cutting area per revolution are analyzed. This study shows the following: •more shallow cutting occurs during the entry quadrant of a cutting cycle than during pick exit; •the ratio of the projected area of shallow cutting to the total projected area of cutting by a single pick per drum revolution is virtually the same for drums of different radii (however, it decreases as the maximum depth of cut increases); and •for double drums, the use of unequal drum diameters can reduce the production of dust and fines, compared to using drums of the same diameter.

She was young, beautiful, intelligent, virgin. Her name was Barbara and she captured the attention of many men, especially those in dangerous occupations. Her rich and doting father was hopeful of making an advantageous marriage for his daughter. Instead, she defied him, became a Christian, and refused to marry. Traumatized, he killed her and was himself struck dead by lightning. That is not the plot of a new soap opera. It is the melodramatic story of a Turkish teenager who was martyred in the third century but lives still as patron saint of mining. The story begins with a 20th century fact. Santa Barbara is a figment of imagination - perhaps based on an early oriental folk heroine, embroidered by a seventh century storyteller, and reworked by a ninth century Greek martyrologist. The authoritative Lives of the Saints reports: "There is ... Considerable doubt about the existence of a virgin martyr called Barbara and it is quite certain that her legend is spurious. There is no mention of her in the earlier martyrologies, her legend is not older than the seventh century, and her cult did not spread until the ninth." The Catholic Dictionary adds that the Barbara story is probably "a pious legend." Widely revered Santa Barbara was one of the most widely venerated saints of the Middle Ages. She became the patron, not only to miners, but also to artillerymen, engineers, architects, builders, stonemasons, gravediggers, and sailors. Mines, mountains, churches, and places bear her name. Barbara's feast day, Dec. 4, appears on the most ancient holy day calendars. And a Barbara festival is still celebrated throughout central Europe, in Spain, and in mining areas of Latin America on that date. The Pacific coast channel, the city, and the mission of California are named for Santa Barbara. An expedition, sailing that coast under Viscaino in 1602, was saved from shipwreck on Dec. 4 after the sailors prayed for Barbara's intervention. Franciscans gave her name to the modern Franciscan Province of Santa Barbara, which embraces six western states and the Philippine Islands. Barbara is intimately entwined with mining. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. General. Copper, the first metal used by man, today is the third in consumption after iron and aluminum. Compared to these it is relatively rare, with less than 0.01% of the earth's crust copper, 8% aluminum, and 5% iron. Nevertheless. our modern civilization is heavily dependent upon copper because of its high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ease of working, durability, wide range of properties by virtue of its readiness to form alloys with other metals, and its attractive colors and texture that make it so desirable for many crafts and arts. These attributes explain why copper is chosen for a long list of uses, including electrical wiring, switchgear, and bus bars; piping, roofing, and siding; and manufactures of brass, bronze, and other alloys. The fact that copper ore is mined in nearly all parts of the world is significant. Its importance is shown in Table I, which gives figures on world production from 1968 to 1977. In the Free World, North and South America and Africa are preeminent. The table also shows the generally upward trend of production in this period; accurate figures for 1978 and 1979 from the same source are not yet available (1980), but it is certain that major environmental, economical, and political factors continued to disturb the industry in those years and into 1980.

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company's policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

The Kidston gold discoveries were originally made about 1907, and by 1934, 1.76 Mg (62,000 oz) of gold had been produced from placer and lode mining of higher grade, most¬ly oxidized gold ore. As mining in the lode ore penetrated deeper, costs increased and the world gold price stagnated. The lode or underground production averaged close to 6.9 g/t (0.2 oz per ton) Au for the 201 kt mined. No mining or development took place from 1934 until 1965. Kidston's high grade ores were exhausted by 1934. From 1965 to 1976, exploration had developed 3 Mt of about 3 g/t (0.88 oz per ton) Au. Placer Pacific acquired rights to the property in 1976 and began a geologic and engineering study of the district. It was clear that the deposit had the potential for becom¬ing a large-tonnage, low-grade producer. However, explora¬tion had to discover the tonnage and grade and engineering needed to solve the obstacles of production costs. Bulk material handling problems were addressed by Placer's wide experience in open pit mining, and the increase in work index accompanying deeper ores was handled by Placer's metallurgists. The matter of power for the operation was solved by engineering studies. These showed that power could be generated and brought in economically. The price of gold also increased after 1976, and this helped in the economic analysis. The Kidston discovery since 1976 is really a combination of good exploration geology and careful engineering plan¬ning that overcame the obstacles presented by ore characteris¬tics and the location of the deposit. This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.

Sources of change to be monitored for innovative opportunities include unexpected successes or failures, incongruities between perceived and actual events, process needs, changes in perceptions and the development of new knowledge. Innovation can be organized, practiced and managed. The perception of change as an opportunity rather than a threat is mandatory, as is the systematic measurement of innovative performance. Innovation is enhanced by specifically designed policies regarding organizational structure and staffing, daily management practices and compensation and incentives.

Orebodies with intricate three-dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer-assisted methods. The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral deposits.

1. INTRODUCTION The safe disposal of tailings is the most important environmental question facing the uranium mining industry today. This is because tailings present a major long term radiological hazard as they contain about 71% of the radioactivity originally in the ore. The magnitude of the problem can be appreciated by considering the quantity of tailings involved. For example, projections of milling programs in Australia indicate that there will be 100 million tonnes of tailings produced by the year 2000 (Levins 1980). The United States currently has in excess of 100 million tonnes and by the year 2000 will have between 900 and 1700 million tonnes (Landa 1980). Present options for tailings rehabilitation include leaving them above ground, returning them to the mine or placing them in specially excavated pits. In any event, the tailings will be covered with earth and revegetation attempted. This will remove the problems of airborne radioactive dust and water erosion of the tailings, at least in the short term, but diffusion of radon-222* from the tailings may still occur. The Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (1981) has proposed a maximum allowable radon flux from rehabilitated tailings of 0.074-0.37 Bq m -2s-1(2-10 pCi M-2 s-1); the exact level is to be determined "after discussion with other regulatory agencies and the industry". The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC 1980) has been more restrictive in recommending a maximum flux of 0.074 Bq m -2s-1 (2 pCi m-2s-1). As a guideline they also suggested a minimum depth of covering material of 3 m to achieve this surface flux for tailings typically found in the western milling regions of the United States. The design of rehabilitation schemes is aided by a knowledge of radon transport through tailings piles. In this paper we present the results of a theoretical analysis and experimental study of radon diffusion through selected Australian tailings and cover material. The minimum cover criteria of 3 m is reexamined in the light of these findings. [ ]

Owned and managed by industry, it coordinates research that answers questions defined by the sponsoring companies of the projects. Now over 35 years old, the Association is an excellent example of what can be achieved through collaborative research and an industry - backed research organisation.
