The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

Computer applications in mine 'production' planning and control are concerned with the here and now. In production planning and control we are dealing with tactics as opposed to strategy. Our objective is to make the best of the situation in the short term, i.e., in a relatively fixed environment with relatively fixed plant, equipment, and labor. Environmental factors include not only the geology of the deposit but also market factors (such as price) and governmental constraints and regulations. Mine production planning systems are applied at the interface between concept and execution. Mine production control systems are applied at the interface between execution and revised operating practices or a revised concept. Fig. 1 shows the information flow that takes place regardless of whether the planning and control systems are manual or automatic. The feedback that results depends on the feedback mechanism that has been established, and this feedback can be enhanced by careful systems analysis and design. Chronologically, production planning and control activities support the last in the series of line functions that are ordinarily performed by mining companies. The first of these is exploration, the second is evaluation and development, and the third and final function is production.

The research laboratory of B.U.S Engitec has identified and patented a new process for electrolytic production of lead from lead sulphide concentrates with simultaneous production of elementary sulphur. The process occurs in an aqueous solution, at atmospheric pressure, utilizing a solution of ferric fluoroborate in fluoroboric acid as the oxidizing and solubilizing medium for lead sulphide. After the filtration and separation of a residue composed of elementary sulphur and the gangue which accompanied the concentrate, the solution containing lead as fluoroborate and iron reduced to a ferrous state is sent to a diaphragm electrolytic cell where, in the cathode compartment, the lead is deposited in a compact form on the stainless steel permanent blank. The exhaust solution stripped of lead is sent to the anode compartment where the oxidation of ferrous fluoroborate into ferric fluoroboratetakes place, reproducing the oxidizing solution for new leaching. Depending on operating conditions, it is possible to selectively solubilize the lead from the other metal values present in the concentrate. The sulphur produced from the reaction may be separated from the gangue by extraction with solvent or by flotation.

INTRODUCTION One of the main problems in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools which, at an economically acceptable level, are capable of continuous breakage of the rock, resulting in a fragmentation suitable for a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the muck away from the tunnel face. Tools employed on tunneling machines have, so far, always been of the mechanical kind which break up the rock by a crushing and shearing action. Other methods of rock breaking are possible but, even if some of them have reached the laboratory testing stage, nearly all of them are still too "exotic" to be of any practical use in the immediate future. One must admit, however, that some highly interesting results are beginning to be reported from the USA on the use of high pressure water jets for the destruction of rock through erosion, a field pioneered in Europe(USSR and Great Britain). Mechanical breakage of the rock is effected by inducing stresses exceeding its compressive/shear strength, by loading it with a wedge of cone shaped tool, until cracks are formed and chips loosened. In order to allow the tools to act upon the rock face continuously, they are commonly shaped as rotating bodies, "roller bits" or "disc cutters", spinning freely and mounted on a revolving boring head of tunnel diameter. The thrust of the tools against the face is generally exerted in a direction which is parallel to the tunnel axis.

In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being done by using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hardrock boring and other, more exotic techniques, Dynatec believes that the traditional methods will prevail for many years. It is also believed that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunneling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC, 1991). This technology was subsequently used to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The development of a Long Round Jumbo for tunneling is a natural progression of the long round technology developed for the Craig Shaft. The Dynatec Long Round System has been patented in the United States and South Africa, with additional patent applications pending in Canada and Australia.

Low world gold prices stimulate development and introduction of economically efficient ( cost saving) technology for operating gold mills. This report covers the results of testing and introduction of CIL technology to recover gold from flotation concentrate of Samarta gold concentration plant located in Buryatia (Russia). This plant is treated the ore of Zun Kholba gold deposit using gravity and flotation of gravity tails as preconcentration processes. Till recently high grade gold gravity concentrate was smelted to gold bullion and shipped to gold refinery, gravity middlings were leached by cyanidation in cone type equipment developed by Irgiredmet and flotation concentrate shipped to copper smelter. The disadvantages of flotation concentrate shipping to copper smelter are following: high concentrate transport cost; problem with gold shipped balance; high cost of flotation concentrate treatment; comparatively low gold recovery. In this connection IRGIREDMET developed the hydrometalurgical technology for gold recovery from flotation concentrate. The flowsheet was developed on the base of laboratory, pilot plant and industrial scale tests conducted by IRGIREDMET in 1987-1997 and lrgiredmet experience on CIP process testing and industrial scale introduction in Yakutia [1-6]. The limestone deposit of Gâsgruvan, Sweden contains around 89.2 per cent of calcite. Conventional and column flotation studies have been carried out using sodium oleate and modified fatty acid collectors in the presence of sodium silicate modifier. The effects of collector and silicate concentrations, and particle size on the flotation response of calcite have been investigated. The results have been discussed in comparision to the performance of conventional and column flotation cells. The feed size is found to be a significant factor to achieve a high grade calcite concentrate either by conventional or by column flotation. The loss of selectivity at fine particle sizes is examined using a modified DLVO theory.

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. INTRODUCTION The majority of ground water flow models have been developed for large computer systems. Most of these operate under a batch mode of operation, that is, the data are input with a deck of punched cards. The advent of micro- and minicomputers over the last few years opens the possibility of adapting many of these large flow programs to the smaller computers. In general, this adaptation will require more computer time to run the program, but in many cases if the small computer is in-house, the overall cost may be less than that required for a large computer. There are also a number of peripheral devices that can be used to make the data input much easier. As an example, the use of a digitizer with a finite element or finite difference mesh reduces the data input time considerably; the use of a graphics terminal for display of the mesh immediately after it is developed shows immediately whether there are errors in the location of node points. DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTERACTIVE SYSTEM The finite element program, UNSAT2, has been used over the past several years by the authors for several ground water flow problems (Bloomsburg, 1977; Bloomsburg and Wells, 1978; Zahl and Bloomsburg, 1980). In the past these programs have been run on an IBM 370/ 145 computer under the batch mode of operation. One difficulty that has been encountered has been in determining the length of time step that must be specified for operation of the program. The problem is that if the time steps are too large, the program becomes un- stable and operation ceases. If this happens in the middle of the problem, the only alternative is to reduce the length of time step and repeat the entire run. This problem has been alleviated in other pro- grams by using a subroutine that determines the time step automatically. If the solution becomes unstable, the time step is reduced automatically and that portion of the solution is repeated. With an interactive system this can be done by storing the output pressures and restarting the program with the new output pressures. Under the batch mode of operation, there is an option in UNSAT2 that allows restarting of the program from the last point of solution, but this must be specified when originally starting the program. The interactive computer system that we use currently consists of a PDP 1 1 /23 with hard disk drive, CRT terminal, plotter, graphics terminal, digitizer, and printer. The computer has 256 K bytes of core storage and the hard disk drive will accept a 5.2 M byte disk. To run a large program on a computer such as this, some overlaying must occur; that is, subroutines are stored on disk and put into core storage only when they are actually needed for running the program. UNSAT2 required very few changes to run on this computer but some changes were necessary to take advantage of the interactive capabilities of the system. One of these changes consists of the development of a program called DBUILD to build the data file for running the program. This program calls for each piece of data by prompt statement and gives instructions for using the digitizer. The data are then entered in completely unformated form. The node points must be entered in order and the coordinates are determined automatically by the digitizer. The pressure readings or initial conditions on each node point are entered through the terminal. All element information also is entered through the terminal. After DBUILD is run the mesh may be displayed immediately on the graphics scope whereupon any error in node point

Ferromanganese slag, a product of the manganese industry, was characterized mineralogically. The slag, which contains high Mn values, was characterized using optical microscopy, XRD analysis and electron microscopy. No separate Mn-bearing oxide mineral phase was found. The slag is amorphous, and no crystalline phase was identified in the hulk sample by XRD, However, in. fine fractions, quartz was identified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of Mn, Si, Al and Ca in the matrix without the development of a mineral phase. Leaching experiments using H2SO4 were carried out to determine if Mn could be extracted from the slag. At room temperature, almost 100% of the manganese could be dissolved at a solid-liquid ratio o f 1:10 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The impurities could be precipitated by pH adjustment to produce a manganese sulfate solution suitable for the production of MnO2 or electrolytic Mn metal. Based on the laboratory-scale experiments, a suitable process is proposed to recover manganese values from the, ferromanganese slag.

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. The Chino open pit mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant county in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership, two- thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The concentrator, with a design capacity of 37,000 tons of copper-molybdenite ore per day, was commissioned in July, 1982. Shotcrete, a useful support material in underground openings, is a sprayed concrete, and, when used with fast-setting agents, is immediately self-supporting. Although shotcrete has been used extensively for tunnel support, the technique has not been readily accepted by the mining industry because of the lack of essential information on such basic items as material properties and rock interaction. The Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) of the Bureau of Mines has been active in the field for the past 2 years, including research on fibrous reinforced shotcrete. IIT Research Institute, Chicago, under Bureau of Mines contract, is investigating physical properties of shotcrete as affected by (1) type of process (wet or dry) and (2) fast-set agents and controlle-dset cements. Already the contractor has shown the advantage of a regulated-set cement over normal cement and fast-set additives for the dry process. The regulated-set cements can produce high early strengths with no decrease in ultimate strength.

The Nuggety Gully prospect is located 170 km (106 miles) south- east of Port Hedland and 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Marble Bar in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. The area is held under title by Esso Exploration and Production Australia, Inc. The prospect covers a significant, but currently uneconomic body of molybdenum and copper mineralization of porphyry style, associated with Archean high level acid intrusives intruding sediments and volcanics of a narrow east-west Archean greenstone belt. The Nuggety Gully intrusive rocks have been dated at 3.2 b.y. ± 117 (de Later, oral communication). The current resource estimate for the deposit is 102 Mt (1 12 million st) of 0.1 1 % Mo and 0.15% Cu.

A computer program developed to be run on a microcomputer is presented and discussed in detail, and a practical case study is analyzed to demonstrate the suitability of the procedures discussed in the paper. The intent of the computer scheduling model is to have quick access to vital information when changes in development and production are under consideration by management.

For 30 years, mining operations worldwide have used diesel-powered mobile machinery to mechanize the mining process. South African diamond mines and some US coal mines have 15 years of experience with this type of equipment. During the past eight years, most of the new gold production from underground mines outside of South Africa has been mined by bulk methods using diesel-powered machinery. The underground mining industry, then, has secured and institutionalized the larger benefits created by a technology that was new to mining engineers in the early 1960s. The state of mechanized diesel-powered underground mining is now mature. To survive, though, mine operators -regardless of commodity mined and position in the commodity cycle-must maximize the benefits of diesel technology. The benefits gained in the next seven to 10 years will be realized by tweaking this component, fine tuning that piece of machinery and demanding optimum use of the technology. Manufacturers of diesel-powered machinery share the condition of maturity with their customers. Larger scale and easy market development have occurred. Much has been made of the potential size of the US coal segment as well as markets in China and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). Indeed, opportunities do exist in these regions. However, these market development opportunities do not imply the market size trend line remains unchanged. They simply mean the potential market size is within reach. In fact, the market size for the product is shrinking.

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia's Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia's northeast, this is one of Australia's main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North's approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. The lesson learned in this discovery is that evaluation of leached capping is an important guide to exploration. The general-

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores.
